Match abandoned Charith Asalanka’s dazzling century and Dilshan Madushanka’s double-wicket maiden had given Sri Lanka the advantage over Zimbabwe after 54 overs of cricket, but persistent evening rain in Colombo meant the first ODI ended without a result.Rain threatened through the afternoon, finally arriving four overs into the chase. At the time, Zimbabwe, chasing 274 for victory, were reeling at 12 for 2 after Madushanka’s new-ball spell had just removed Tinashe Kamunhukamwe and Craig Ervine for ducks. But Asalanka’s 95-ball 101 was the standout performance of the day, not only for his shot-making but also for the patience he showed. With batters regularly falling around him and no real partnerships taking shape, Asalanka had to adjust his tempo and rein in his aggressive instincts till he eventually felt the time had come.He was on 52 when the No. 8 Maheesh Theekshana joined him with 13 overs to go, and he built a partnership of 23 with Theekshana and 52 with Dushmantha Chameera by rotating the strike smartly and picking the right balls to attack. All four of Asalanka’s sixes came in that period, and he took Sri Lanka to a respectable 273 for 9.Dilshan Madushanka bowled two maiden overs, picking up two wickets in the second of those•Ishara S Kodikara/AFP via Getty Images
Before Asalanka stole the show, it was left-arm seamer Richard Ngarava and Zimbabwe’s spinners who impressed. Ngarava operated on that nagging off-stump channel and, with the new ball, accounted for Avishka Fernando for a duck and Sadeera Samarawickrama for 41.Offspinner Tapiwa Mufudza – the highest wicket-taker in Zimbabwe’s recent Pro50 tournament – found turn through the afternoon to finish his ten-over spell with none for 37 on ODI debut. Sikandar Raza got an arm ball to bowl Theekshana and also controlled the middle overs as he claimed 1 for 41. Raza’s direct hit to run Kusal Mendis out for 46 was also crucial in pegging Sri Lanka back on a surface that promised big runs at the start.Blessing Muzarabani produced a strong spell to finish with 2 for 62, using his height to hurry Sri Lanka’s lower-order batters and add the dots. Faraz Akram, on ODI debut too, was wayward with his medium-pace, but sent back fellow debutant Janith Liyanage (24) and Sahan Arachchige (11) against the run of play to ensure Sri Lanka never ran away with the game. With many of Zimbabwe’s bowlers struggling to cope with the conditions, Ryan Burl was used as a fill-in, but his 3.2 overs went for 32, with Asalanka pouncing on the opportunities at the death before being run-out in the last over looking to get back on strike. The second ODI will be played at the same venue on Monday.

da cassino: Over the last few years, Manchester City have let plenty of academy players leave who could have made a real name for themselves in the first team. Two of those players have actually scored against them this season, and are a couple of the more prominent examples.
da betsul: The first was Morgan Rogers, now at Aston Villa. He has been sensational under Unai Emery in recent weeks, with one of his highlights a goal against Pep Guardiola’s side in December. He never got the chance to show what he could do in City’s first team.
Morgan Rogers
The other player is Brahim Diaz. The Real Madrid and Morocco international was on the scoresheet at the Etihad Stadium earlier in the season in the Champions League after impressing for Los Blancos over the past 18 months in particular.
However, perhaps the most famous example in recent seasons is Cole Palmer.
Cole Palmer's staggering rise since leaving Man City
There might never be a more frustrating sale in City’s recent history than that of Palmer. He joined Chelsea in the summer of 2023 for a fee of £42.5m, which has proven to be a bargain for the West Londoners.
Chelsea star Cole Palmer
Palmer has played 78 times for the club, scoring 39 times and grabbing 21 assists. One of those goals also came against City, in November 2023.
The England international scored a last-minute penalty to earn Chelsea a point, in a game that ended as an extraordinary 4-4 draw.
There is certainly an argument to be said that City never really gave Palmer the chances he deserved for his boyhood club.
He only played 41 times across four full seasons, and his 1,483 minutes for the club only equated to 16 full 90-minute games.
Although his form has been shaky of late – not scoring or assisting across his last ten matches – City must surely regret losing Palmer, who was a treble-winner with Guardiola’s side in 2022/23, his final season at the club. His overall impact at Chelsea has been second to none.
Manchester City's Cole Palmer celebrates scoring their first goal
Incredibly, there was arguably an even more talented player than the Wythenshawe-born superstar in his age group.
The Man City academy star who was ahead of Palmer
City can boast a lot of academy talent who have gone on to do great things in professional football, either in the famous Sky Blue shirt or elsewhere.
Sadly, things haven’t quite worked out yet for Ben Knight.
The versatile attacker enjoyed several years in City’s academy and was part of a group filled with “exceptional talents”, as football talent scout Jacek Kulig described their U23s side back in 2021.
The Cambridge-born attacker left City in the summer, joining Spanish outfit Real Murcia on a free transfer. However, after playing just five times, he has since left the club and is now available on a free contract.
Knight represented City across age-group sides for several seasons. He arguably played his best football for their U21s, where he scored ten times and grabbed eight assists in 46 games, showing his versatility as an attacker, too. The former City academy star played right across the forward line.

Stats from Transfermarkt
The attacker played 16 minutes for City’s first team, with his sole appearance coming against Leicester City in the Community Shield in 2021. That was also the final time he was involved in the same matchday squad as Palmer.
The City academy pair played 30 games together in total for City’s academy and England youth sides. Perhaps surprisingly, they never managed to combine for a goal, despite their threat in attack.
While they were in the same age group, it was actually Knight who made his U21s bow first, appearing as a 16-year-old in a Premier League 2 clash in September 2019. Palmer didn’t make his Premier League 2 debut until a year later, aged 17.
Unlike Palmer, things haven’t really worked out for Knight so far since leaving the Etihad Stadium. He has previously impressed on a loan spell with Crewe Alexandra – involved in four goals in ten games – and he will be hoping to reignite that form at his next club and get his career back on track.

He has become a talismanic figure for Milan, registering a career-best 17 goals and 12 assists this season, but is said to be mulling over his options after enduring a tough Serie A campaign that is destined to finish without European qualification being secured.
DID YOU KNOW?
There has been talk of Premier League teams casting admiring glances towards the ex- Chelsea forward, while heavyweight outfits in Italy have seen what Pulisic is capable of and would be willing to do a deal at the right price.
GettyWHAT AN INSIDER SAID
Matteo Moretto has told when offering an update on Pulisic’s situation: “He does not have a short contract, he expires in 2027 with an option for 2028, but Milan has been negotiating his renewal for several months now. The parties have arrived, I would not say at the contracts, but almost. They have reached a verbal agreement, they have discussed figures and numbers, contract adjustments and everything in terms of salary.
“Then at a certain point, Pulisic asked and took time because he wanted to understand Milan’s sporting project between the sporting director and the coach. He wants to have guarantees for the future.
“Pulisic’s agent is moving a lot, he proposed the boy both in Italy and abroad. But the player certainly has a contract with Milan, and in my opinion, once these ideas are clear, then we can also get to a contract extension. As of today, the renewal is on standby.”

da betsul: Tottenham Hotspur’s long-awaited trophy finally came at the end of this season, but attention has quickly turned to the 2025/26 campaign, with work needing to be done to sustain the success.
da bet sport: Ange Postecoglou led the Lilywhites to a Europa League triumph, but it wasn’t enough to save his job in North London, as Daniel Levy relieved the Aussie of his duties.
He subsequently appointed Thomas Frank, handing the Dane the responsibility of building on the European victory and making the side a competitive Premier League outfit.
He will need to make a quick start to life at the club to prove the owner made the right decision in opting for a change, potentially coming under huge pressure should he fail to deliver.
However, if he is to be a success in the role, he will need backing within the current transfer window, handing him the platform for success during his first season at the helm.
The latest on Spurs’ hunt for new additions this summer
Over the last couple of days, Lyon star Georges Mikautadze has emerged as a key target for Spurs, with the club expected to make an offer for the Georgian forward after their relegation to Ligue 2.
Rodrigo Muniz is another player on their radar this window, but will cost a pretty penny during the off-season, as Fulham are demanding £50m for the Brazilian forward.
However, if either of the players are to move to North London, they will need to be provided with opportunities in the final third, with Xavi Simons a player in their sights, according to GIVEMESPORT.
Their report claims that the RB Leipzig star is keen on a move to the Premier League this window, but the German outfit are demanding a fee in the region of £60m to part with their star man.
It also states that the Lilywhites have registered a keen interest in the 22-year-old, who managed to register 10 goals and seven assists in the Bundesliga this campaign, with contact already taking place as the north Londoners have been ‘updated on Simons’ situation by his representatives’.
Why Spurs’ £60m target would be a better signing than Eze
Over the last couple of years, Crystal Palace star Eberechi Eze has been constantly on Spurs’ radar, but they’ve never been able to complete a deal for his signature.
Crystal Palace's EberechiEzecelebrates with the trophy after winning the FA Cup
This window remains no different, with Frank already targeting the England international and considering making a move to take the star to North London.
His stock is undoubtedly higher this time around, after netting the winner in the FA Cup final this campaign, securing the Eagles’ first major trophy against Manchester City at Wembley.
However, he does currently have a £68m release clause in his contract, but could face huge pressure to land his services, as North London rivals Arsenal have also entered the race.
As a result, the Lilywhites hierarchy should shift their attention to a move for Simons, with the Dutch international a better option for Frank’s outfit this window.
Xavi Simons celebrates
He would provide the side with a younger and cheaper option, but when comparing the pair’s respective figures from 2024/25, he’s also managed to outperform him in key areas – subsequently making him a higher-quality addition.
Simons, who’s been labelled “exceptional” by OptaJohan, has completed more of the passes he’s attempted, and posted more progressive passes per 90 – handing other attackers at the club the chance to bolster their own tallies.

The youngster has also starred with his ball-carrying, registering nearly two times more carries into the final third per 90, showcasing his desire to get forward at any given moment.
Given his age, price tag and difference in figures produced, a deal for Simons should be a no-brainer this window, offering Frank the elite-level talent he craves within the final third.
It would be an expensive addition for the hierarchy, but ultimately, it’s one that’s needed if the club are to reach the next level during the Dane’s tenure at the club.
There’s no denying that Eze is a hugely talented player, but it’s evident that there is a tendency for more expensive fees to be touted for English stars, subsequently making Simons the better option this window.
A better signing than Semenyo: Spurs leading race to land £25m sensation
Tottenham Hotspur appear to be making strides in a move to land a new talent for Thomas Frank.
