Back in the Midlands, many expected the signing of Marcus Rashford to fill the void of the Colombian’s goals, but as good as he’s been, Villa managed to pick up another super sub in the winter transfer window, who’s taken to Duran’s role like a duck to water.

Alongside the huge loan signings of Rashford and Marco Asensio in January, Villa also made a permanent signing to their attacking line, signing Donyell Malen from Borussia Dortmund for a fee of around £19m with £2.5m in add-ons.

Since joining the club, it’s been a topsy turvy period for the 26-year-old who was disappointingly omitted from the club’s Champions League squad list for the knock-out stages.

Despite that setback, he has caught the eye across his 11 appearances for the Villans, netting three times in 340 minutes played. Malen can play all across the front line, on both wings and as a centre-forward, something he has already shown under Emery since arriving.

And over the weekend, Malen netted another goal coming from the bench – his second in recent weeks – playing just 24 minutes against Southampton, taking one shot and converting it into a goal for his side.

The Dutch forward only had 13 touches in the match, making six of his seven passes but made his most important touch count in front of the goal, much like Duran often did.

Having an effective player to come from the bench with fresh legs is something that worked well for Emery earlier in the season with Duran, and having a player like Malen who can do this, but also play in multiple positions across the front line gives Emery even more flexibility.

With Villa gaining £65m from the sale of Duran and bringing Malen in for nearly a third of that fee, it could be argued that as good as the former is at such a young age, the business wasn’t bad for the Midlands club, using the funds effectively to strengthen their squad.

However, despite his impressive form at Old Trafford to date, the club made a huge mistake offloading a player who was once ahead of the youngster in the pecking order – thriving away from Manchester as a result.

Despite Amad’s progress at United over the last few months, the club have certainly made some huge calls they could live to regret, selling players on the cheap who have gone on to star elsewhere.

Angel Gomes is a player who springs to mind, spending the majority of his youth years at Old Trafford, before departing on a free transfer in the summer of 2020 – now being a full England international – showcasing the mistake the club made in allowing him to leave.

However, they made a similar mistake, allowing Anthony Elanga to depart in the summer of 2023, leaving in a £15m deal to join Nottingham Forest, ending his seven-year spell in the North West.

The Swedish international made 55 appearances for the club’s first-team, often featuring in the senior ranks whilst Amad spent his respective spells out on loan.

Elanga, who has previously been labelled “phenomenal” by journalist Zach Lowy, even scored in the Champions League against Atlético Madrid during the 2021/22 season – showcasing his importance to the first-team.

However, after just five starts in the Premier League throughout 2022/23, Erik ten Hag would offload him, a decision that would be a huge mistake given his form this season.

The 22-year-old has notched five goals and nine assists across all competitions this campaign, including a double against Ipswich Town in his last outing – netting the first double of his professional career.

He’s also managed to outperform Amad in numerous key areas throughout the year, showcasing the development he’s made under Nuno Espírito Santo at the City Ground.

His lack of action during his final year in Manchester ultimately led to Ten Hag offloading him, with the winger needing valuable minutes to continue his progression.

You can’t blame the Swede for wanting to move on to take his career to the next level, but now he’s done just that, many around the club must wish he had stayed with the Red Devils, offering Amorim another dimension within the club’s forward line.

Pep Guardiola has certainly left his legacy on English football and despite enduring the worst season of his managerial career, the Spaniard signed a new two-year extension to his City contract late last year.

The FA Cup remains City’s only hope of claiming any silverware this season. Regardless of what happens, securing a top-five place in the league table – and Champions League qualification that goes with it – is clearly the priority for Guardiola.

During the winter transfer window, he spent around £190m on signing four players who could pave the way for a new era starting next season.

Omar Marmoush, Vitor Reis, Abdukodir Khusanov and Nico Gonzalez all arrived at the Etihad in what was the busiest winter transfer window since the former Barcelona manager took over the hotseat in 2016.

Reis and Khusanov are two extremely talented defenders who could become a key duo over the coming years. Gonzalez is a 23-year-old midfielder who has the qualities to replace Rodri, while Marmoush adds some competition in the attacking department for Guardiola.

It is the latter who is already beginning to repay the faith shown in him by the manager.

The Egyptian cost the club around £59m from German side Eintracht Frankfurt earlier this year.

While spending this much midway through the season is always seen as somewhat of a risky venture, Marmoush shone in the Bundesliga between August and January.

Across 25 games for Frankfurt, Marmoush found the back of the net on 20 occasions, chipping in with 14 assists in the process.

It didn’t take him long to make an impression at City. During their 4-0 win over Newcastle United last month, the 25-year-old scored his first Premier League hat-trick.

Operating on the left wing during that game, Marmoush also attempted two dribbles, delivered five crosses and completed 88% of his passes, showcasing his incredible talents.

Overall, in seven top-flight games for City, he has netted four times, created three big chances, averaged 1.1 key passes and has a 29% goal conversion rate, indicating that the player is taking to life in England with apparent ease.

The club were relying too heavily on Erling Haaland to provide the goals and when he suffered a dip in form, the club struggled.

Marmoush might well prove to be one of Guardiola’s most effective winter signings, especially if he maintains his current form.

Aged 25, Marmoush has arguably yet to hit his peak and this could see his valuation soar over the coming years.

At this moment in time, however, the former Frankfurt star is worth €60m (£50m) according to Transfermarkt, although this has been fixed in place since late December 2024 and doesn’t take into consideration his recent form.

There was one player who was sold by the club last summer that is currently worth double Marmoush’s valuation.

Did Guardiola make a big mistake by selling Julian Alvarez to Atlético Madrid in 2024? Judging by his form and increase in value, it appears so.

Having shone for River Plate in his homeland, Alvarez was snapped up by City in January 2022 for a fee of just £14m, although he wouldn’t link up with the English side until the end of the 2021/22 campaign.

His maiden season at City saw the Argentinian score 17 goals in 49 appearances for the club, but only 23 of those came in the starting XI.

Nevertheless, he helped the club win a treble of Premier League, FA Cup and Champions League, becoming the fifth player – after Cafu, Dida, Roque Junior and Ronaldinho – to win the World Cup, Copa Libertadores and Champions League in their careers.

His second season saw a marked improvement in output, netting 19 times while registering 13 assists on his way to being labelled as an “incredible” player by Guardiola.

Rather surprisingly, he was sold last summer to Atlético for a fee of £82m. They may have made a staggering profit, but at what cost?

His move to join the La Liga side, who are managed by his compatriot Diego Simeone, has given them a new lease of life this season.

Only a penalty shootout defeat to holders and rivals Real Madrid ended their chances of success in the Champions League, while the club are currently looking to reach the final of the Copa del Rey and are very much in a title chase.

Alvarez has scored 23 goals in 44 matches for the club, an excellent return, and he is certainly living up to his lofty fee.

In the top flight, the 25-year-old ranks in the top 9% for successful take-on percentage (57.1%), in the top 9% for carries into the final third (1.78) and in the top 11% for shot-creating actions (3.42) per 90.

It seems that the 2022 World Cup winner has settled in nicely at Atlético, which has also seen his valuation rise over the previous few months.

Indeed, according to the CIES Football Observatory, Alvarez is now currently worth €125m (£105m) due to his recent form for the Spanish outfit.

Not only does this value mean he is worth double that of Marmoush, but it proves that Guardiola made a big mistake in selling the South American forward, even if it meant bringing in a huge profit.

Of course, there is no way of telling whether his presence in the team could have prevented City from their struggles this season.

Given how well he has performed on the continent, however, losing him last summer could turn out to be one of the club’s worst pieces of transfer business in recent times.

Prioritising Test cricket and ensuring that New Zealand’s best players want to keep playing for the country are on top of the agenda for NZC’s new chief executive Scott Weenink, who took over from David White on August 30.Weenink, 50, is a businessman and a former first-class cricketer from Wellington, and he was the chair of the New Zealand Cricket Players Association (NCPA), a position from which he will now step down.”It was a great honour to be offered the position,” he said. “I love sport and cricket in particular, and I also love the business of sport – so this seemed like an ideal role. There’s a finely balanced, symbiotic relationship between community and high performance cricket in New Zealand and one of my key responsibilities is to ensure that’s maintained and sustained into the future.”Weenink will formally begin duties on Friday and said at a press conference in Auckland that he recognised the need to strike a balance between Test cricket and the increasingly-crowded T20 calendar.”I’m a Test cricket romantic but also I see Test cricket as being key to keeping players playing for New Zealand,” Weenink said. “I think if we didn’t have Test cricket, it’d be much harder to keep them interested in that. They’d simply, you know, come back and play an ICC [event]. So absolutely, I’ll be looking to try and promote Test cricket while balancing the fact that we do need to play the higher revenue parts of the game as well.”It is that difficult balance of recognising that Test Cricket doesn’t make money, but it’s very important for the fans and very important for the players. I think the Test Championship has been a great addition. And that’s certainly going to keep the interest. And it’s all evolving, so we need to try and keep on top of that, make sure that we’re giving players flexibility, but also really encouraging them to stay and play for New Zealand.”New Zealand Cricket Board chair Martin Snedden said that to retain players, sometimes they needed to be allowed to “chase the money.””We are in a battle for the retention of players and therefore we have to ensure that the players see real value in staying available for New Zealand for as often as possible … If it’s important to players that they’re regarded as great players, players that have succeeded, they have to play at the international level to get that reputation.
