Man Utd can axe Garnacho for 18-year-old academy star who's "flying"

One of the proudest things about Manchester United is their incredible academy. Over the years, they have produced some legends of football, going back to the Busby Babes and the Class of ’92.

More recently, some of the best Carrington graduates to come out of Old Trafford include Paul Pogba, Jesse Lingard, Marcus Rashford and Scott McTominay. That particular quartet all enjoyed success in the famous red shirt.

Under Rubem Amoirm, there have been several academy stars who have had first-team involvement already. Players with less experience, including striker Chido Obi, have been given minutes, and more prominent members of the squad have featured heavily, including Kobbie Mainoo.

However, one Carrington graduate who has struggled for his best form consistently this term is Alejandro Garnacho.

Alejandro Garnacho's struggle in 2024/25

After a couple of breakout seasons in the past two campaigns, notably scoring that audacious overhead kick against Everton last term, Garnacho has been a little inconsistent in the 2024/25 campaign.

Of course, the Red Devils have struggled as a team, and the Argentina international has been in and out of the side.

Manchester United's AlejandroGarnachocelebrates after the match

The 20-year-old’s numbers are, on the face of things, impressive. He has scored nine times and managed to provide eight goals across all competitions, having featured in 45 games so far this term.

However, his goal involvements have tended to come in clumps, and he grabbed six goals and assists in the first two rounds of the Carabao Cup against Barnsley and Leicester City. He has also grabbed three assists in United’s last three Europa League games.

In the Premier League, the Argentina winger scored last weekend, also against the Foxes, but had previously gone on a 16-game goal and assist drought. The goal was a well-taken finish, getting on the end of a pass from Bruno Fernandes and firing into the bottom right corner.

Garnacho is clearly a talented player, who has shown just how good he can be this term. However, his inconsistencies might lead Amorim to rotate him out of the side more, so he can stay fresh and have more of an impact off the bench.

If this is the case, perhaps there is another Carrington graduate who can help supplement Garnacho’s playing time.

Carrington star breaking through could replace Garnacho

United are not short of quality options in their academy, but perhaps none are more exciting than Gibraltar international James Scanlon.

The 18-year-old winger has been in superb form for the Red Devils U18s this term and has made the bench once for the first team against Real Socidead in the Europa League last week.

The 10-cap Gibraltar star, who has one international goal already, has certainly not forgotten his shooting boots this season for United’s academy. He has 17 goals in 24 games across all competitions, as well as six assists.

Scanlon has been in particularly deadly form in the U18s Premier League for United this season. He has an impressive 13 goals in 13 appearances, including four goals against Blackburn Rovers in a 9-0 win.

Aside from his excellent performances this season, one of the reasons the 18-year-old could be propelled into the United first team is due to his international experience. He has already played senior football for Gibraltar, which will certainly have got him used to the physicality he can expect.

In fact, one of his best performances for the national side came against Wales in a friendly last summer. His side didn’t see much of the ball, but Scanlon impressed in possession and without the ball, too. As per Sofascore, he won three out of five ground duels and completed 80% of his passes.

It is certainly hard to argue that giving Scanlon first-team opportunities this season would not be deserved. Not only is he a full international for his nation, but has been “absolutely flying” for United’s youth sides this season, as Statman Dave said.

With Garnacho’s form patchy, perhaps Scanlon is the man to come into the first team and help take the workload off him, to let him rediscover his best form.

Ancelotti now personally wants Real Madrid to sign "excellent" Everton star

Ahead of the summer transfer window, Carlos Ancelotti has reportedly set his sights on bringing an impressive Everton star to Real Madrid in what would deal David Moyes a frustrating blow.

Everton transfer news

Moyes has so far picked up where he left off at Everton over a decade ago, even giving Goodison Park a final Merseyside derby to remember courtesy of James Tarkowski’s stunning last-minute equaliser. It’s the type of moment that he will hope to witness at the new Bramley-Moore Dock stadium which recently hosted its first test event – an academy fixture between Everton and Wigan Athletic.

Meanwhile, back at Goodison Park the senior side are preparing to welcome a struggling Manchester United side in the hope of making it five games without defeat in the Premier League.

Victory would also see the Toffees move four points clear of the Red Devils – representing just how much Moyes’ arrival has turned things around for those in Merseyside. That success is not going unnoticed, however, and one particular player is now reportedly attracting quite the attention.

According to The Mirror, Ancelotti now personally wants Real Madrid to sign Jarrad Branthwaite, who could be allowed to leave Everton for the right price this summer despite watching on as Manchester United’s bids were rejected in pursuit of his signature last year.

Sold by Koeman: Everton's "world-class" ace is now outscoring Beto & DCL

Everton have had their fair share of high-profile forwards over the years, and he may be the pick of the bunch.

ByAngus Sinclair Feb 18, 2025

Worth £75m in the eyes of the Merseyside club last season, it remains to be seen if that valuation will stick one year on. After a difficult start to the campaign, Branthwaite has burst back into life under Moyes and back into the headlines on the transfer front.

Still just 22 years old, the central defender could yet reunite with the man who handed him his Everton debut if Real Madrid come calling this summer.

"Excellent" Branthwaite could have decision to make

Just like last summer, Branthwaite could have the ultimate decision to make when the transfer window swings open. Except this time, it’s Real Madrid knocking and not a fragile Manchester United side. Whether the defender swings the door open this time around remains to be seen, but the La Liga giants are rarely turned down.

Moyes, just as Sean Dyche was, will be keen to keep hold of the future of Everton’s backline who has been back to his best as of late. Dubbed “excellent” by football talent scout Jacek Kulig, Branthwaite is back on the rise.

As the summer approaches and Everton prepare to say goodbye to Goodison Park, they’ll be hoping to avoid the added farewell of star defender Branthwaite, who has already stepped up under Moyes.

Short-lived records for Myles Lewis-Skelly! Arsenal starlet sees TWO Champions League milestones instantly nabbed by close friend Ethan Nwaneri in semi-final first-leg clash with PSG

    WHAT HAPPENED?

Lewis-Skelly set the record for both the youngest Englishman and youngest Premier League player to appear in a Champions League semi-final. At just 18 years and 215 days, you might expect the youngster to be cowed by the occasion, but Lewis-Skelly continued to show maturity beyond his years during an admirable performance against Les Parisiens. GOAL gave the wonderkid a 6/10 for his performance, on a night when some of Lewis-Skelly's more tenured team-mates failed to show up.

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

It didn't take long for those records to be broken, however. At the 90-minute mark, Nwaneri entered the fray. At 18 years and 39 days old, the winger added to his personal collection of records. Famously, Nwaneri played in the Premier League at just 15 years and 181 days old, making him the youngest player to ever appear in the English top flight.

  • Getty Images Sport

    DID YOU KNOW?

These records will be of little comfort to the two prodigies and best friends, who would have hoped to cap their breakthrough season with a Champions League final appearance. The Gunners fell behind in just the fourth minute to a smartly-taken Ousmane Dembele finish after a 27-pass move by the visitors. While Arsenal generated a few openings, they couldn't get past Gianluigi Donnrumma, except for a disallowed attempt by Mikel Merino. The Spaniard was judged to be in an offside position after a VAR consultation.

  • WHAT NEXT FOR LEWIS-SKELLY AND NWANERI?

Both men will be a week older when they face PSG at Parc des Princes for the return leg. While that's not really enough time to obtain much more experience, both youngsters will likely feel emboldened by their involvement in such a massive fixture at such a young age. Both will hope to play a pivotal role in what should be a watershed moment for this young Arsenal side.

India call up Ramandeep, Vyshak and Dayal for T20I tour of South Africa

Riyan Parag, Mayank Yadav and Shivam Dube are out injured

ESPNcricinfo staff25-Oct-2024Middle-order batter Ramandeep Singh and fast bowler Vijaykumar Vyshak have earned their maiden India call-ups for the four-match T20I series in South Africa, which begins on November 8 in Durban.Left-arm quick Yash Dayal, who has recently been part of India’s Test squad but is yet to make his international debut, has also found a place in the squad.Related

Jitesh Sharma got ahead of himself. He knows not to do it again

Ramandeep’s end-overs hitting was a key cog in Kolkata Knight Riders’ storming run to the IPL title earlier this year. He only faced 62 balls in the tournament, but scored 125 runs off them at a strike rate of 201.61 – the fourth-best among all batters to have faced at least 50 balls through the season. Ramandeep can also chip in as a medium-pacer and is a gun outfielder, which he demonstrated while taking a boundary catch that went viral during the recent Emerging Teams Asia Cup in Oman.Karnataka and Royal Challengers Bengaluru seamer Vyshak has been on the fringes of national selection over the last few months, and was one of five emerging players to earn fast-bowling contracts from the BCCI. He is known for his pace variations in white-ball cricket, and has impressed in the red-ball format recently as well, taking 10 wickets at 24.90 during the Duleep Trophy.Dayal, meanwhile, was originally part of the India A squad that is embarking on a shadow tour of the senior Test squad’s tour of Australia. He has, however, been withdrawn from that tour and will be part of the T20I squad in South Africa instead. His place in the India A squad has gone to Prasidh Krishna, who has also found a place in the Test squad for the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. The T20I squad has three notable absentees, all due to injury. Batting allrounder Riyan Parag is undergoing rehabilitation for what the BCCI’s squad announcement termed a “chronic right shoulder injury”. Fast bowler Mayank Yadav and seam-bowling allrounder Shivam Dube were also unavailable due to unspecified injuries.ESPNcricinfo LtdMayank, who made his international debut during the recent home T20Is against Bangladesh, has been troubled by constant injuries including an abdominal muscle issue that ruled him out of IPL 2024 after he had made an eye-catching tournament debut, consistently crossing 150kph while picking up the Player of the Match award in his first two games. It is not known if Dube’s injury is the same back issue that ruled him out of the recent home T20I series against Bangladesh. Middle-order batter Tilak Varma, who had replaced him for that series, keeps his place in India’s squad. There are also recalls for the fast bowler Avesh Khan and spin-bowling allrounder Axar Patel. Axar was rested from the Bangladesh T20Is because he was part of India’s Test squad during a busy home season, but he has not found a place in the touring party to Australia, with Washington Sundar effectively leapfrogging him into that squad. Axar has now taken Washington’s place in the T20I squad. With the South Africa tour partially coinciding with the Test tour of Australia, the T20I squad is also without fast bowler Harshit Rana and allrounder Nitish Kumar Reddy, as well as established all-format players including Yashasvi Jaiswal, Shubman Gill, Jasprit Bumrah and the injured Kuldeep Yadav.India are scheduled to play four T20Is in South Africa, in Durban (November 8), Gqueberha (November 10), Centurion (November 13) and Johannesburg (November 15).India squad for T20Is against South AfricaSuryakumar Yadav (capt), Abhishek Sharma, Sanju Samson (wk), Rinku Singh, Tilak Varma, Jitesh Sharma (wk), Hardik Pandya, Axar Patel, Ramandeep Singh, Varun Chakaravarthy, Ravi Bishnoi, Arshdeep Singh, Vijaykumar Vyshak, Avesh Khan, Yash Dayal.

Lyon's apprentice Murphy tops his master in the rough of Nagpur

Murphy shelved the overspin typical of bowling in Australia and consistently bowled around 95kph with high side spin, and had five wickets to show for it

Alex Malcolm10-Feb-20233:09

Chappell: Murphy bowled tidily but Australia need wickets

Eleven months ago, Todd Murphy had played just one first-class match. He was a contracted player with Victoria, having played in an Under-19 World Cup for Australia, but was biding his time in grade cricket for St Kilda. On March 12 last year, he was playing at Russell Lucas Oval in Ringwood, in Melbourne’s outer eastern suburbs. His two victims that day were Melbourne Stars opener Tom Rogers and USA and Hampshire batter Ian Holland.Eleven months on, in Nagpur, Murphy knocked over KL Rahul, R Ashwin, Cheteshwar Pujura, Virat Kohli and KS Bharat, in that order, to become the first Australian spinner since Nathan Lyon to take five wickets on Test debut.Related

Nagpur Test, Day 2: Rohit, Jadeja, Axar give India control

“It’s been a pretty special couple of days and to top it off with a five-wicket haul on debut is more than I ever hoped for,” Murphy said after play on the second day of the Test.He did it while outbowling his mentor Lyon, 13 years, 115 Tests and 460 wickets his senior before the game. He did it having nearly not been selected at all for this Test match. It was a remarkable performance from Australia’s newest cricket hero, unassuming, bespectacled, and affectionately nicknamed “Goggles” at St Kilda. He didn’t do it in the same manner as Jason Krejza had in Nagpur 15 years ago. It wasn’t a host of brilliant big ripping offbreaks while conceding 4.90 an over. He did with outstanding control of length and line. He did get a touch fortuitous with his dismissals of Pujara and Kohli with arguably his worst two balls. But they were reward for the pressure he built with his consistency. It was the reason he was finally selected ahead of Ashton Agar. Australia’s selectors had a preference to play a left-arm orthodox in Nagpur as they had chosen in Sydney against South Africa, both to complement Lyon and match up well against India’s right-hand dominant top order. There was a worry that a second right-arm offspinner would be surplus to requirements.Yet, those in Victoria were shouting to anyone who would listen that Murphy had a far superior record to right-handers in first-class cricket. And so it proved. Murphy’s five victims were all right-handers with a combined total of 58 Test centuries.

“Observing everything and competing in the nets and bowling to the Sri Lankans, I took a lot of confidence out of that and reflected and went back, trusted myself a bit more, and thought ‘what I’ve got can be good enough’ and believe in that”Todd Murphy on the Australia A tour of Sri Lanka last year

The disparity in the consistency between the two showed up in ESPNcricinfo’s ball-by-ball data. Agar, a ten-year veteran of first-class cricket, landed just 50% of his 132 deliveries on a good length in his nervous Test return in Sydney against South Africa and went wicketless as a result. He also bowled two full-tosses and two half-trackers.Murphy, meanwhile, in just his eighth first-class game, landed 63% of his deliveries on a good length and bowled just the one full-toss and one drag down. His 37 full-length deliveries cost only 23 runs and resulted in a wicket.Lyon only landed 59% on a good length and erred full 43 times, which cost 38 runs. He only picked up the one wicket for the day with Suryakumar Yadav playing a very loose drive to a ball that could have easily been defended. But Lyon did have Ravindra Jadeja dropped at slip by Steven Smith in the final over of the day.It was remarkable how well Murphy adapted to the conditions when compared with Lyon. Murphy’s long-time bowling coach Craig Howard had noted his ability to adapt his bowling to the conditions that were presented.”Howie for me he’s been someone that I’ve always been able to go to and I’ve been able to trust and he knows me as good as anyone and knows what works for me,” Murphy said. “We’ve had a lot of really good conversations over the years about what works in what conditions and we had a good chat the other day about over here and just trusting the skill set that I’ve got.”Batters’ errors contributed to some of Todd Murphy’s wickets, but his lengths contributed to the mistakes•Getty ImagesNagpur’s pitch required faster speeds and a lot of side spin, as Jadeja had shown on day one. It was exactly what Murphy delivered on day two. There are shades of Graeme Swann in his action and there were shades of Swann 2012 in his bowling as he shelved the overspin that is required in Australia – the overspin that has made Lyon so successful in the toughest of offspinning climes at home – and consistently bowled up towards 95kph with high side spin.It is a skill he had honed under Howard at the National Cricket Centre in Brisbane on the purpose-made India-style red-clay pitches over many winters. It was one of the laments of the Australian squad that they were not able to train on those pitches prior to this tour for reasons that are not entirely clear and were instead forced to practice on scarified pitches at North Sydney Oval that were not quite the same. His ability to implement it his first Test was quite remarkable. But he credited his Australia A tour to Sri Lanka last year with helping him believe he could produce it at the highest level. “Having a little bit of success over there probably gave me the confidence I needed going back to Australia that I could mix it with first-class cricketers.””Being around some of the guys who had played Test cricket, observing everything and competing in the nets and bowling to the Sri Lankans, I took a lot of confidence out of that and reflected and went back, trusted myself a bit more, and thought ‘what I’ve got can be good enough’ and believe in that.”Murphy operated almost exclusively around the wicket to India’s right-hand batters, rarely pitching outside the line of the stumps and threatening both edges. His length was so good that even Rohit Sharma in the midst of a sublime match-defining century struggled to get down the track to him and never played back to him. Murphy simply asked the batters to defend a good length. It yielded two of his five wickets with Ashwin and Bharat both pinned lbw trying to defend on the front foot.1:11

O’Keefe: Todd Murphy will be a superstar

His other three were helped by batter errors. Rahul chipped a drive back to him on the opening night, while Pujara played a rare sweep to a ball way outside leg and picked out short fine. Kohli was caught down the leg side playing well wide of his body with Alex Carey taking an outstanding juggling catch unsighted as part of an excellent day behind the stumps. But while the batters’ errors contributed, Murphy’s lengths contributed to the mistakes as all three were stuck playing from the crease.Murphy also benefitted from the tireless work of Scott Boland. The inexperienced Victorians were undeniably Australia’s best two bowlers on a tough day in the field. Yet, inexplicably, they only bowled in partnership for one spell of eight overs in the first session. From overs 38 to 45 they bowled eight overs, three maidens, and combined for 2 for 18 with Murphy removing Ashwin and Pujara, after Rohit and Ashwin had taken 40 runs off the first 13 overs of the morning against Lyon and Pat Cummins.Boland had figures of 9-4-7-0 after his brilliant six-over burst. But he would only bowl eight more overs through the day, which included having Jadeja dropped at slip, a really tough chance low to Smith’s right, and Axar Patel nicking him just short of second.Murphy, too, could have had Jadeja twice. With India on 224 for 5, he hit Jadeja on the front pad as the left-hander stretched out to defend. The lbw appeal was turned down and the review came up umpire’s call on impact. It was going on to hit the middle of middle. Then, with Jadeja on 60, late in the day, he conjured a thick edge as Jadeja tried to cut the wrong length, but it was too thick for Carey to grasp and it rebounded off his gloves over Smith at slip.Australia have found a diamond in the rough in Nagpur in Murphy, and possibly the spin-bowling heir to Lyon. But on his first two days in Test cricket, he looked more like the master than the apprentice.

Leeds now make formal approach to sign £38m La Liga defender after Bijol

da apostebet: With Jaka Bijol officially signed and delivered, Leeds United have now reportedly turned their focus towards a second defensive addition in the form of a £38m La Liga ace.

Jaka Bijol completes Leeds move

da bet nacional: It took some time but Bijol is finally a Leeds player. The defender has arrived from Udinese for a reported £15m and becomes the Whites’ second signing of the summer after Lukas Nmecha.

After putting pen to paper to make his move official, Bijol told Leeds’ official media channels: “This is a big day for me, for my family and I’m happy to be here. Maybe the biggest one of my career so far, but I’m ready for it.

“I work for it and that’s why I’m here, because it’s a big challenge for everyone. It’s a big challenge for me, for the club, and we’re getting ready for it together. I think the club and myself are ready for the Premier League.

“I can promise that I will give everything, that I will give everything in every training as well to be ready for the first game of the season and then just go from there.”

Bijol may be the second arrival of Leeds’ summer but he looks unlikely to be the last. The 49ers look set to back the Yorkshire club as they prepare for their return to the Premier League, with names such as Oscar Gloukh now threatening the steal the headlines. The talented attacker would instantly be one to watch in England’s top flight, there’s no doubting that.

The Red Bull Salzburg man isn’t the only one on Leeds’ radar, however. Reports are now even suggesting that they’ve turned their attention towards another defensive addition after already welcoming a central defender in the form of Bijol.

Leeds make formal approach to sign Natan

According to Estadio Deportivo, as relayed by Sport Witness, Leeds have now made a formal approach to sign Natan de Souza from Real Betis. The central defender has just made his loan move permanent in Spain but could already be on the move again amid interest from those at Elland Road and Lazio.

Reports have claimed that Betis have already rejected a proposal worth as much as €27m (£23m) from an unnamed club to sell their defender and instead value Natan at a hefty €45m (£38m) this summer. Whether Leeds are willing to reach that figure will be the big question as their pursuit continues.

Keeping up with Bijol in a number of areas, albeit whilst failing to outperform the new Leeds star, Natan could yet form an impressive partnership with the former Udinese man at Elland Road.

The 24-year-old won’t come cheap but if Leeds are to stay afloat at the first time of asking back in the Premier League then the 49ers must be prepared to spend big.

The baffling breakdown of the Australian T20I team

A lack of ruthlessness – what a thing to say about any Australian side – that might yet do for them at this T20 World Cup

    Danyal Rasool04-Nov-20221:56

Moody: This performance a reflection of Australia’s campaign

“It’s just that New Zealand game.”That was Australian assistant coach Daniel Vettori’s taciturn response after his side’s four-run win over Afghanistan to a suggestion there might be wider issues for a side that now sits one game from elimination at the T20 World Cup.Australia’s humbling at New Zealand’s hands on the opening day of the Super 12 stage might have been surprising for the opposition it came against: New Zealand had not beaten Australia in Australia in any format since 2011, and found themselves comfortably outclassed when the two sides contested last year’s final. But New Zealand’s sensational 89-run win not only got Australia’s title defence to the worst possible start, it hobbled the hosts’ net run rate and has very likely cost them a semi-final place.Related

Australia's hometown exit: a campaign that started badly and never got going

This World Cup has belonged to the teams with the best bowling attacks

Report: Australia relying on SL after sneaking past Afghanistan

'Tactical decision' to leave Starc out says Vettori

Could Australia's battle against net run rate have been avoided?

While that evisceration might have been an exception, few have ever been convinced of Australia’s impregnability in this format, even on that run to the title in the UAE. Because T20 World Cups don’t necessarily throw up the best team as the winner so much as the side that manages to string enough knockout games together. In 2021, when an Australian unit that had, just four games ago, been thrashed by England with 50 balls to spare lifted their inaugural T20 World Cup title, it only seemed to underscore that point.A year isn’t a great deal of time between World Cups, but even so, this Australian side is strikingly similar to the one that won it all last November. Ten of the 11 who played against Ireland also started the World Cup final last year, and the 11th, Steven Smith, played today against Afghanistan. Whatever issues that side had has effectively carried over to this particular campaign, in completely different conditions. Also, it’s perhaps unsurprising a squad that already had the highest average age at last year’s World Cup began to see niggling injuries pile up; during that game against Ireland, three players went off the field nursing hamstring strains, and two of them would end up ruled out against Afghanistan.2:59

Moody: Much more to Starc’s exclusion than it being a tactical selection

Australia’s use of the resources they still had turned out to be a bit baffling too. All of which came to a head in a performance that, if not just as ordinary as that New Zealand showing, certainly finished a close second. Mitchell Starc has been struggling for form for the best part of three years, but having tied themselves in knots with how best to use him this tournament, they stumbled upon a novel solution: dropping him altogether. In a game Australia needed to win by – to use the technical term – lots and lots of runs, ditching perhaps the world’s best inswinging yorker bowler left everyone from Tom Moody to Michael Clarke to even Afghanistan coach Jonathan Trott completely nonplussed. In addition, no international team has a worse T20I average against left-arm pace this year than Afghanistan, scoring 16.2 runs per wicket. Left-arm pacers take an Afghan wicket every 13.7 balls, the second-best strike rate among all sides. They only concede runs at 7.1 runs per over; no side struggles to score as much against that kind of bowling. The replacement, Kane Richardson, might have a better overall death-overs record than Starc, but taken apart for 48 runs as he was, did little to justify the tactical epiphany Australia appeared to drop their most explosive pacer on.Having eschewed arguably the most aggressive bowling option, opting against promoting Glenn Maxwell further up the order in a bid for a bigger score appeared equally perplexing. Tim David came into this tournament as Australia’s X-factor, but hasn’t quite seen things go his way. There was perhaps little Australia could do but recall Smith to start, but sending him in after David Warner fell with the fielding restrictions still active continues to show Australia’s inability to buy into a philosophy of all-out, fearless attack. That he fell for four off as many deliveries perhaps meant little damage was done, but what happened next appeared to surprise the side’s most lethal power hitter as much as anyone attuned to watching modern, progressive T20 cricket.Glenn Maxwell was strangely held back in a game where Australia needed big runs•Associated Press”We lost the first wicket and I came out thinking I was five,” Maxwell would say post-match. “But I was told I was at six, so I said okay. I left my gear and I went back inside. There wasn’t a whole lot of conversation around it, I knew it was going to be a fluid batting order.”When Maxwell eventually did come in, he smashed an unbeaten 54 off 32, by far the highest strike rate of his team-mates. But for a man who looked in sensational touch at the nets the previous day, not to mention the high ceiling a Maxwell in form offers, being deprived of the chance to face even more deliveries to pile on the runs hinted at an impression of stifling inflexibility that has never quite escaped this Australian side.To boot, Maxwell would admit the knowledge of limited batting to follow played a part in how gung-ho he chose to be with shot selection, a problem alleviated either by a promotion or the total abandonment of any fear of getting out in pursuit of high-risk runs. On both counts Australia came up short in the way that England – who, in their own must-win game against New Zealand, dropped Dawid Malan to No. 8 and posted their highest score of the tournament – likely wouldn’t have.It is that lack of ruthlessness – what a thing to say about any Australian side – that might yet do for them at this T20 World Cup. While they were clinical in making up for run rate dents against Bangladesh and West Indies last year, they blew a golden opportunity to do the same in Brisbane against Ireland, allowing them to post 137 after reducing them to 25 for 5. Against Sri Lanka, they would find themselves bogged down in a chase they ended up achieving at a canter, the early tentativeness costing them once again. This certainly isn’t the worst Australian T20I side, even as they stare elimination in the face. They have lost just one match all tournament, and were deprived of the chance to determine their own destiny by the Melbourne rain. But as the curtain draws down on a home World Cup Australia are likely to take no further part in, the idea it was “just that New Zealand game” appears thinner than ever. This is a side that will likely be dismantled before the next T20 World Cup comes around, and on current evidence, it’s perhaps about time it was.
