Man City player ratings Ederson – 5

Was on course for a fine evening of work before gifting Real Madrid and former Blue Brahim Diaz their second by uncharacteristically conceding possession late on.

Josko Gvardiol – 7

Once again the defender was at the heart of all of City’s impressive work going forward and even got an assist to his name for Haaland’s opening goal.

Nathan Ake – 6.5

Faced a difficult time up against Vinicius and didn’t always have things his own way, but Ake stood firm for the majority of his time on the pitch before he was replaced by Mateo Kovacic.

Ruben Dias – 7

City have missed their commanding defender and even as injuries fell around him, Dias often remained solid despite shipping what were frustrating goals.

Manuel Akanji – 7

Summing up their injury issues, Akanji became the second City player forced off with injury at the break to add to Pep Guardiola’s woes. Prior to that, however, the Swiss – to his credit – did well up against an energetic Vinicius Junior.

John Stones – 8

In the defensive midfield role as Guardiola’s latest attempt to replace Rodri, Stones’ performance puts him in good stead to once again feature in what could provide a crucial solution for Man City at the heart of their midfield.

Savio – 5

The Brazilian endured a frustratingly quiet game for his standards, struggling to get on the ball and make the desired impact as Real Madrid pushed him back with offensive outlets of their own.

Kevin de Bruyne – 6.5

For all his hard work when he got himself on the ball, De Bruyne struggled to do exactly that one too many times. In the end, his lack of influence proved costly on a big night for his side.

Bernardo Silva – 6

A midfielder who’s struggled to maintain his standards at times this season, Silva once again performed below what he is capable of just when Guardiola needs his most experienced men to step up.

Jack Grealish – 7

Forced off after just 30 minutes, Grealish didn’t need beyond the half hour mark to make his mark on Real Madrid having played Gvardiol in behind in the build-up to Erling Haaland’s opener.

Erling Haaland – 9

In truth, there wasn’t a lot more that Haaland could do. Finding the opening effort in routine fashion, the forward then stepped up to take responsibility from the penalty spot and score what many believed would be the winner.

Substitutes: Phil Foden – 7, Rico Lewis – 6.5, Mateo Kovavic – 6.5

Real Madrid player ratings Thibaut Courtois – 7

Although it was a rarity, the goalkeeper did well – as ever – to keep out the majority of Manchester City danger. Up against Haaland, the Belgian could do nothing to stand in the way of both goals.

Federico Valverde – 7

You wouldn’t know that Federico Valverde was out of position based on his performance up against the Premier League champions – albeit the hurt champions – with the midfielder enjoying an impressive display.

Aurelien Tchouameni – 7

Like Valverde, Tchouameni performed well out-of-position and highlighted how Madrid have been doing well to solve problems of their own in recent weeks.

Raul Asencio – 6.5

A young defender alongside an out-of-position midfielder, not many will have any complaints about Asencio’s performance at The Etihad as he largely kept Manchester City at arm’s length.

Ferland Mendy – 6

Whilst he didn’t struggle defensively, Mendy was guilty of spurning a chance that should have been converted in the opening period which Carlo Ancelotti would have wanted to fall to almost anyone else.

Rodrygo – 7

Mbappe and Bellingham will get the credit, but Rodrygo stood out in his own right throughout a frantic affair.

Eduardo Camavinga – 7

As the old guard in Real Madrid’s midfield bow out, Camavinga has stepped up on the biggest stage to make his mark in their place.

Dani Ceballos – 6.5

Back on English soil, Ceballos loses marks for conceding the penalty on what was otherwise an well-rounded evening from the former Arsenal man.

Jude Bellingham – 7.5

The match winner to turn a quiet game into an electric evening, Bellingham was always likely to have his say at The Etihad and that he did.

Vinicius Junior – 7

In front of fans who were quick to remind him about his recent failures, Vinicius was among the stars of the show as he laid down a marker in front of an on-watching Rodri.

Kylian Mbappe – 7

Although wasteful at times, Mbappe still made his mark with a well-timed equaliser in somewhat scrappy fashion.

Substitutes: Luka Modric – 6, Brahim Diaz – 8, Fran Garcia – 7

David and McDermott re-sign with Hobart Hurricanes in the BBL

Hobart Hurricanes have been able to shore up their BBL list by re-signing in-demand power hitters Tim David and Ben McDermott beyond next season.David, 27, has signed a one-year extension to take his contract through until the end of the 2024-25 season. McDermott, 28, has committed to the Hurricanes until the end of 2025-26.David has become a global T20 phenomenon since making his name at Hurricanes in 2020 after starting his career as a fringe player with Perth Scorchers. He has become a mainstay in Australia’s T20I side over the last 12 months.Related

Despite being part of the Mumbai Indians franchise and playing for MI Cape Town in the SA T20 last year, after he had completed his BBL commitments, as well as MI New York in the upcoming Major League Cricket in the United States, David will continue to commit to the BBL with Hurricanes for the next two seasons.”I am very happy to be extending with the Hurricanes for the next couple of years,” David said.”While I am playing a lot of my cricket overseas, I feel at home among my teammates and support staff in the Hurricanes setup, and I am hopeful that I can contribute more to this group going forward.”Ben McDermott goes on the attack•Getty Images

McDermott has committed to Hurricanes long-term despite leaving Tasmania after eight years to relocate to Queensland with his young family to play his domestic cricket for the Bulls.McDermott said it was difficult to leave Tasmania but remaining with Hurricanes provided a silver lining.”I haven’t spoken a whole lot publicly about it, but it was genuinely a really difficult decision to make,” McDermott said. “Ultimately, family comes before everything, which I know everyone down in Tassie was really understanding and supportive of, but it was a really hard decision given how long I was down there, how much I grew as a cricketer during my time in that program, and the fact that a lot of the guys I played with for all of those years are some of my best mates.”The fact that competitions like the Big Bash allow players to move around a little bit is perfect for me – there’s a lot of similarity between the Tigers and Hurricanes squads, so I’m rapt that I will still have the opportunity to play with a lot of those guys and spend some quality time down in Tassie over the next few years.”Plus, on-field, I really believe we have a great team that can make history for the Hurricanes. We had pretty much all of the ingredients last year, and things just didn’t quite go our way when it counted. With a couple of tweaks here and there, I’m really excited about what we can achieve not just in BBL 13, but beyond that as well.”Hobart Hurricanes squad: Tim David, Paddy Dooley, Nathan Ellis, Peter Hatzoglou, Caleb Jewell, Ben McDermott, Riley Meredith, Mitch Owen, Billy Stanlake, Matthew Wade

India finish just ahead of Ireland in rain-hit contest

Visitors had scored two runs more than the DLS par score when bad weather ended the game

Sreshth Shah18-Aug-2023
Rain had the final say but not before adding to a dramatic finish in Malahide, where India got over the line with a two-run win over Ireland.Craig Young’s back-to-back wickets moments before rain had stopped play loosened India’s grip, but in the end the powerplay hits from India’s openers and the bowling effort, led by Jasprit Bumrah on his return, proved just enough for the No.1 T20I side to finish ahead of Ireland.Bumrah’s double-wicket blow in the first over put India ahead for most of the game, but Ireland’s lower order, led by Barry McCarthy and Curtis Campher, resisted the early collapse. From 59 for 6, they helped drag Ireland to 139 for 7. McCarthy made a career-best unbeaten 51 off 33 balls while Campher contributed 39 off 33 balls.

The tense finish

There was always a sense that rain could be a factor in the game, but despite a drizzle through the afternoon the umpires didn’t stop play until it became heavier. When five overs of India’s chase was completed, a result was guaranteed. At that stage, India were favourites with both Ruturaj Gaikwad and Yashasvi Jaiswal finding their groove after a sedate start to the chase. They had finished the powerplay with a six apiece in the last two overs of that phase, lifting India to 45 for 0 in six overs.Young then had Jaiswal caught at midwicket on 24 with a short ball. The chase tightened when Young had Tilak Varma gloving down the leg side to the wicketkeeper for a duck. At that point, India were only three runs ahead of the DLS par score, and another dismissal would’ve put Ireland ahead in the game.Sanju Samson, though, survived the hat-trick ball and guided a single to backward point. Ruturaj defended the next delivery before rain ended the game.

McCarthy’s new high

McCarthy had scored just fifty – and one century – in his career before Friday. He came into bat 59 for 6 and scored four fours and as many sixes. He had the solid Campher for company, but both batters found it tough to score off spinners Ravi Bishnoi and Washington Sundar early on. However, when Bishnoi bowled one googly too many, McCarthy hit the game’s first six by hammering one over long-on, and from thereon, both batters scored the occasional boundary to push the team’s total.Though Campher ruined Bumrah’s spell with a four and six off consecutive balls in the 16th over, it was McCarthy who was causing more damage consistently. He gave debutant Prasidh Krishna a teaser of his power when he pulled him for four in the 15th over, and then he crunched two fours and a six off him in the 17th. The bowlers tried to vary their pace against both McCarthy and Campher and though they were successful to some extent, both batters gave Ireland late impetus. An Arshdeep Singh yorker eventually ended Campher’s stay and suggested that India would finish the bowling innings strong, but it wasn’t to be. McCarthy tore into Arshdeep in the 20th over with a four and two sixes – including one off a free-hit – to give the home fans something to cheer about.

India bowling blows hot and cold

Bumrah, India’s captain for the series, started the day on the right note by winning the toss. After choosing to bowl, he made the best use of conditions by blazing through the Ireland top order. In his first over, he recovered from a first-ball four to knock Andy Balbirnie over with an inswinger and in the same over he had Lorcan Tucker paddling one behind to wicketkeeper Samson.Harry Tector then joined Tucker in the dugout following another failed ramp, this time off Prasidh. Bishnoi then struck with his second ball to deceive Paul Stirling with a googly and flatten his stumps. The pair soon added to their tally when Prasidh had George Dockrell hitting a short ball to cover and Bishnoi had Mark Adair adjudged lbw in the 11th over on review. However, India would’ve been disappointed at letting the seventh-wicket stand to last for 7.2 overs. Arshdeep changed his pace and often bamboozled McCarthy and Campher, but both batters managed to find the occasional boundary. It wasn’t until the 18th over that Campher was dismissed, and by then Ireland were already on course for a respectable total. Campher’s 22-run final over off Arshdeep indicated that there were still some concerns for India in the bowling department.

Revealed: Three reasons why Borussia Dortmund have 'reservations' about signing Man Utd flop Jadon Sancho again

Borussia Dortmund reportedly have 'reservations' over signing Manchester United flop Jadon Sancho for a third time.

  • Sancho linked with third Dortmund spell
  • Man Utd looking to sell winger
  • Juventus also credited with interest
Follow GOAL on WhatsApp! 🟢📱
  • WHAT HAPPENED?

After Chelsea passed up the chance to turn Sancho's loan move into a permanent deal earlier this year, the 25-year-old is facing an uncertain future. The England international has once again been linked with Dortmund, a club he spent four years at between 2017-21 before returning for a loan stint in 2024. But reports in Germany suggest a move to the Bundesliga outfit may not happen, and here's why.

  • Getty Images Sport

    THE EXPLANATION

Sky Germany journalist Patrick Berger states that while Sancho is prepared to accept a big pay cut to join Dortmund, the German giants have 'reservations' about recruiting the ex-Manchester City academy player. They include being concerned about signing him for a third time, the potential criticism of lacking creativity when it comes to transfers, and the fact that neither Chelsea nor United wanted him.

  • WHAT DORTMUND SAID

Berger relayed that Dortmund manager Niko Kovac refused to be "led onto thin ice" when asked about a Sancho move.

And Sebastian Kehl, the club's sporting director, said: "[Jadon] is constantly being linked with us. I understand the desire. We’re thinking about it within our possibilities. The conditions have to be right. We will definitely do something, but we’re limited."

  • Getty Images

    WHAT NEXT?

United are reportedly willing to let Sancho, who has also been linked with a Juventus switch but Berger adds they have since 'cooled' their interest, leave for as little as €20 million (£17.5m). That is a far cry from the £73m ($97m) the Red Devils forked out for him in 2021.

IPL 2023: A relentless run-fest with no signs of slowdown

The season has seen unprecedented numbers, with the batters dominating through and through and the trend is likely to continue

S Rajesh10-May-2023Run-scoring quicker than ever beforeThe average run rate this season has been 8.95; the previous highest was 8.64 in IPL 2018. If we talk just about the first innings, the scoring rate has breached the nine runs per over mark for the first time in IPL history (9.07). The chase run rate of 8.83 is the highest too.

As many as six teams have scored at more than nine runs per over so far this season. Chennai Super Kings have gone at 9.43, Mumbai Indians at 9.41, while Royal Challengers Bangalore have scored at 9.09. In all the 15 IPL seasons before this, a team had exceeded the nine an over mark only six times.

The phase-wise numbers too point in the same direction. In the first innings, the powerplay run rate this year has been at an all-time high of 8.86; the previous best was 8.28 in 2018. Similarly, in the middle and death overs, the numbers so far in 2023 are better than those of the previous seasons.

The 200-run festsThe current edition of the IPL has already witnessed 12 more 200-plus totals than the previous best, and there are 20 matches still to go. There were 18 instances of 200 scores breached last year, which is well below the 30 recorded so far in 2023.

Five teams – Kolkata Knight Riders, CSK, Mumbai, Punjab Kings and Rajasthan Royals – have already breached the 200-mark four times each. Before IPL 2023, there were only five instances, in the entire IPL history, of a team scoring four 200-plus totals in a season: Kings XI Punjab (now Punjab Kings) in 2014, RCB in 2016, CSK in 2018, KKR in 2019 and CSK again in 2022. With 20 games still to be played, 2023 could be the first time a team posts five or more 200-plus totals in a season. The boundary boards getting pepperedIn the inaugural edition of the IPL in 2008, batters hit a six every 21 balls. That has now improved to one every 15.5 balls in 2023, again the best among all IPL seasons. In 2018, there was a six hit every 15.9 balls, which was marginally better than the 2022 rate of 16.2.

Among the 53 batters who have faced at least 100 balls this season, 31 have achieved a frequency of fewer than 15 balls per six. Glenn Maxwell leads that list with 27 sixes in 177 balls, which comes up to a six every 6.6 deliveries. Shivam Dube (7.7), Andre Russell (8.4), Heinrich Klaasen (8.9), Jitesh Sharma and Tim David (9.0 each) round off the top six. At the bottom of this list are David Warner – two sixes in 274 deliveries (137 balls per six) and Manish Pandey (one in 114 balls). The hit-menTwenty-one batters have faced 100-plus deliveries at a strike rate of 150 or more so far this season, which is easily the highest. Last year the number was 14. The presence of ten teams instead of eight means more opportunities for batters, but even so, the numbers this year are staggering. Before 2022, not one season had more than ten batters achieving this feat. Overall, there have only been 127 such instances in the IPL, which means this season alone has accounted for almost 17% of the total number.

Maxwell is on top of this list with a strike rate of 186.44, but what’s surprising is the presence of Ajinkya Rahane in fourth place (181.48).No signs of slowing downThere was an apprehension that the run rates would drop towards the second half of the tournament as the pitches got weary, but so far, at least, there have been no signs of any slowing down. In the last 26 games, the run rate has climbed to 9.04, compared to 8.87 in the first 28 matches. And a 200 total has been breached 18 times. The number in the first 28 games was 12.

Out of the 11 venues used so far, nine have seen run rates in excess of 8.6. The Ekana Stadium in Lucknow has been the outlier with a run rate of 7.1, more than one run lower than the next lowest. Among venues that have hosted at least three games, Delhi and Lucknow are the only ones that haven’t yet witnessed a 200-plus total.

The scoring rates might yet drop in the last leg of the tournament, but IPL 2023 has been an almost relentless run-fest. And there seems to be no sign of a slowdown.

Injured Mulder ruled out of remainder of Sri Lanka Tests

Wiaan Mulder has been ruled out from the rest of the Sri Lanka series after fracturing his right middle finger while batting in the first innings of the first Test. Matthew Breetzke has been added to the squad as a replacement.Mulder suffered the injury on the first ball of the 27th over, which was the fifth ball he faced. Lahiru Kumara got one to nip back into Mulder and his fingers appeared to jam into the bat handle as he defended. He received treatment on-field in what became a 10-minute over, and faced two more balls before retiring hurt. He kept the first one, a yorker, out and left the last ball of that over before he decided he would not continue. He came out to bat when South Africa lost the ninth wicket – of Temba Bavuma – and faced five more balls to finish on 9 not out. That included a dance down the track to hit Dhananjaya de Silva for six.Mulder was taken for an x-ray at the lunch interval and it confirmed the fracture. Ryan Rickelton was the substitute fielding in his place. Mulder’s absence means South Africa’s plans for a four-seam, one spinner attack have been affected. In Kagiso Rabada, Marco Jansen and Gerald Coetzee, they have three seamers with Keshav Maharaj as the only specialist spinner. Aiden Markram is available to bowl offspin if needed.

“Test tours to the subcontinent can ask some really tough questions of pace bowlers due to the nature of the pitches and the heat and humidity,” head coach Gary Stead said.”While we’re going over with an open mind around conditions, there is an understanding that all our bowling options may be needed across the different Tests. Tim and I have discussed this, and the need during these overseas tours to balance the workloads of the pace-bowlers, including himself, to ensure the team is best served.”The squad announced on Monday does not cover the India series in October and November, but it’s likely a very similar group of players will be involved. There had been some doubt over whether Kane Williamson would play the Afghanistan Test, which will be staged in Greater Nodia, but he has been included for the first occasion the two teams will play each other in the format.ESPNcricinfo LtdOffspin allrounder Michael Bracewell returns 18 months after last featuring for the Test side. Kyle Jamieson was not considered as he continues his recovery from a stress fracture of the back.”It’s always great when young guys force their way into squads through performance and I know Will and Ben are really looking forward to the challenges of Test cricket in the sub-continent,” Stead said.”Michael’s had to show plenty of resilience to rehabilitate his injuries and force his way back into the Blackcaps across all three formats. Orta wanted him: Leeds eyeing move for "very prolific" Piroe upgrade

Leeds United look set for a busy summer in the months to come after the transfer window officially opens in June, as they look to build a team to avoid relegation from the Premier League.

Daniel Farke is heading into a pivotal season in his managerial career, after it was reported that he was in danger of losing his job despite winning promotion, due to his previous failures in the top-flight.

Leeds United manager DanielFarkebefore the match

Paraag Marathe backed the German head coach, however, and ended any talk about the tactician losing his job by stating: “I have ended the speculation. He is my man.”

Farke managed 49 games in the Premier League with Norwich City across one-and-a-half seasons and lost a staggering 35 of those, picking up just 26 points.

He has been backed to make a better fist of the Premier League this time around with Leeds, though, after he led them to the Championship title.

In order to do that, the Whites will need to invest in the squad to provide the head coach with a team that has the quality to avoid the drop, which is why Joel Piroe could be in danger of losing his place in the team.

Why Joel Piroe should be concerned this summer

Whilst the Dutchman should not be sold or loaned out in the summer transfer window, Leeds should be looking at options to potentially replace him as the first-choice option in the centre-forward position.

Football Insider reported that the West Yorkshire outfit have doubts over Piroe’s ability to make the step up to the Premier League, and that they are not planning to build their attack around the former Swansea City marksman.

The left-footed attacker scored 19 goals in 46 games in the Championship for the Whites as their first-choice centre-forward, after beginning the campaign as the second-choice behind Mateo Joseph.

Despite his impressive season on paper in the second tier, after emerging as Farke’s preferred number nine option, his lack of physicality could be why Leeds are not planning to build their attack around him.

As you can see in the table above, the 25-year-old forward ranked incredibly lowly among his positional peers in the division in a host of physical statistics, which may be why he may not be suited to the Premier League against stronger and quicker defenders.

Joel Piroe

This may be why Leeds are not convinced by his ability to make the step up, and why the club are reportedly looking to add a new striker to the squad.

Leeds eyeing move for new centre-forward

According to The Boot Room, Leeds United are eyeing up a move to sign Stade Rennes centre-forward Arnaud Kalimuendo in the upcoming summer transfer window.

The report claims that the club have rekindled their interest in the 23-year-old dynamo, and are now set to battle it out with Newcastle United to land his services ahead of the 2025/26 campaign.

Arnaud Kalimuendo celebrates for Stade Rennais.

It states that Rennes are prepared to cash in on the French striker, whose contract is due to expire in the summer of 2017, and this has caught Leeds’ attention, three years on from when they tried to sign him from his previous club.

Independent reported in 2022 that the West Yorkshire outfit made a bid of £17m to sign the attacker from French giants Paris Saint-Germain, as Victor Orta looked to snap him up for Jesse Marsch.

Former Leeds chief Victor Orta.

The former Whites sporting director was unable to get a deal over the line for Kalimuendo, and he went on to sign for Rennes for a fee of £21m that summer.

Leeds should, now, work hard to succeed where Orta failed in 2022 by bringing the Rennes forward to Elland Road as an upgrade on Joel Piroe.

Why Leeds should sign Arnaud Kalimuendo

The Championship champions should bring the 23-year-old star to the club to replace the Dutch marksman because he has proven his quality in one of Europe’s major leagues.

Kalimuendo won 3.55 duels per 90 and won 35% of his battles in Ligue 1 during the 2024/25 campaign, which suggests that he would be more suited to the physicality of the Premier League than Piroe, who won fewer duels and a lower percentage of his duels in the Championship.

As well as being an upgrade on the Leeds marksman from a physical perspective, the former PSG attacker could also be an upgrade as a goalscoring option for the Whites.

Kalimuendo, who was once described as “very prolific” by talent scout Jacek Kulig, has scored 27 goals in Ligue 1 in the last two seasons, whilst Piroe is yet to score a goal in Europe’s top five leagues in his career to date.

As you can see in the table above, the Rennes forward enjoyed a terrific year in Ligue 1 in the 2024/25 campaign, outperforming his xG by two goals and only missing six ‘big chances’.

For context, Piroe missed 13 ‘big chances’ and had a conversion rate of 19% in the Championship, which means that Kalimuendo was more clinical and effective in front of goal than the Dutchman was, despite playing in a higher division.

This suggests that the French marksman could offer more of a threat in the final third than Piroe could in the Premier League next season, based on what they delivered this season.

Therefore, Kalimuendo could be a terrific signing for Leeds, three years on from when Orta wanted him, by offering an upgrade on Farke’s current number nine from both a technical and physical perspective.

  • WHAT HAPPENED?

According to Petrovic has been granted permission by the Blues to undergo a medical next week at the Cherries. He spent the 2024–25 season on loan at Strasbourg, Chelsea’s sister club in Ligue 1, which is also owned by the BlueCo group. He featured in 31 matches for the French side, playing a vital role in their seventh-place finish that secured a UEFA Conference League spot. His standout displays earned him the club’s Supporters’ Player of the Season award.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Despite his strong performances in France, it was made clear to Petrovic upon his return to west London that his long-term future would lie elsewhere. Chelsea had honoured a gentleman’s agreement allowing the 25-year-old to leave if a club met the £25 million asking price, a figure Bournemouth are now ready to match.

  • DID YOU KNOW?

With Robert Sanchez and Filip Jorgensen sharing goalkeeping duties last season and Enzo Maresca reportedly keen on ball-playing keepers, Petrovic’s chances of becoming first choice looked slim. However, he has already returned for pre-season in England and has been training at Cobham alongside other fringe players like Joao Felix, Ben Chilwell and Renato Veiga away from the main squad, who are competing in the United States in the Club World Cup.

    WHAT NEXT FOR PETROVIC?

All that remains now is for Petrovic to pass his medical and formally agree on personal terms, steps that are expected to be completed early next week. Once confirmed, he will become one of Bournemouth’s marquee summer additions, joining a squad looking to push further up the Premier League table under manager Andoni Iraola.
