Newcastle must sign Evan Ndicka

Newcastle United enjoyed a fantastic January transfer window as they made a number of key additions to Eddie Howe’s squad.

PIF brought in Kieran Trippier, Dan Burn, Bruno Guimaraes, Matt Targett and Chris Wood and they have all played a part in the club’s revival in the second half of the season.

The Magpies are now 14 points clear of the bottom three and look set for another campaign in the Premier League, with central defender Burn playing a huge role in their recent success.

He joined from Brighton in January and has averaged a solid SofaScore rating of 7.01 in the top-flight this season for the Toon and the Seagulls combined.

Forget Dan Burn

Whilst the giant Englishman has been an excellent addition to the team, the Magpies now have the chance to sign a player who will make the fans quickly forget about him.

German outlet Bild recently reported that Newcastle are interested in signing Frankfurt defender Evan Ndicka, who is valued at £24m (€28m).

The French tank can be the club’s new defensive leader and be an upgrade on Burn or play alongside him as he has proven his quality in Germany this year.

Frankfurt boss Adi Hutter previously showered the gem with praise, saying: “I honestly have to say that I was surprised by his development. Evan has developed phenomenally. He’s very attentive in the analysis of his own game. He’s very modest and always takes a lot on board.”

The centre-back has also received applause from former Frankfurt player Alexander Schur as he claimed the Frenchman “shows no nerves” and “plays with great authority.”

In the Bundesliga this season, Ndicka has averaged a fantastic SofaScore rating of 7.14. He has made an impressive 3.4 tackles and interceptions per game and won 60% of his duels, showing that he has been putting in consistent performances and dominating opposition attackers throughout the campaign.

Ndicka also ranks higher than Burn for progressive passes, progressive carries, dribbles completed and pass completion per 90 mins over the last 365 days. This means that the Frankfurt man would be an upgrade on the current Toon star in terms of what he offers in possession, whilst his statistics in the Bundesliga in comparison to Burn’s in the Premier League suggest that his all-round displays would also be better.

Therefore, Howe can land a new defensive leader for Newcastle by bringing him to the club this summer. He has shown that he has the quality to be a major player at St. James’ Park and he has the potential to improve further at the age of 22, which means that he would be a sublime signing for now and for the future.

Salah hopeful he’ll be fit for UCL final

Mohamed Salah is hopeful that he will be fit for Liverpool’s Champions League final clash against Real Madrid, according to journalist James Pearce.

The Lowdown: Salah injured in final win

The Reds enjoyed FA Cup glory on Saturday following a dramatic penalty shoot-out win over Chelsea at Wembley, winning their second trophy of the season.

Salah didn’t even make it to half-time, though, limping off with a groin injury and immediately sparking concern surrounding his involvement in the Champions League final on May 28th.

However, a hopeful update has now emerged regarding the 29-year-old’s situation.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/latest-liverpool-transfer-news-32/” title=”Latest Liverpool transfer news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=“none”]

The Latest: Pearce provides Salah injury update

Taking to Twitter on Saturday night a few hours after the FA Cup final, Pearce confirmed that Salah is confident of being fit for the Champions League showpiece against Real Madrid in Paris.

The journalist tweeted: ” ‘Of course, all good’ says Mo Salah when asked if he will be fit for the CL final in Paris.”

The Verdict: Wrap him in cotton wool

While there is no official confirmation surrounding the severity of Salah’s injury, that he believes he will be fit for the 28th is certainly an enormous positive.

Having gone off injured in the 2018 decider against the same opposition, it would be cruel for the 29-year-old to suffer Champions League final heartache yet again – more importantly, Liverpool need arguably their best player on the pitch.

Salah will do all he can to prove himself, although Jurgen Klopp should be wary of not letting his heart rule his head in the meantime, only starting the Egyptian if he is ready.

There is enough depth in the squad to make do without him from the start these days, which is a very different situation to four years ago. Therefore, Klopp must wrap the 29-year-old in cotton wool for the Premier League games against Southampton and Wolves this week.

Dermot Gallagher reveals why "lucky" Arsenal star wasn't sent off v Newcastle

Dermot Gallagher has now revealed why one Arsenal star wasn’t sent off in a controversial moment during the 2-1 victory against Newcastle United on Sunday.

Gunners come from behind to win at St. James' Park

Prior to Sunday’s encounter, Newcastle had won four of their previous five matches against the Gunners at St. James’ Park, but Mikel Arteta’s side sent out a statement by ending their hoodoo, picking up all three points in dramatic fashion.

Arteta has received widespread criticism for his decision to persist with Mikel Merino in recent weeks, but the Spaniard rewarded his manager for his faith by bagging a late equaliser, before Gabriel headed home in stoppage time to secure an important victory on the road.

The Gunners are in the race for an attacker, following a scouting mission.

Speaking after the match, Arteta insisted his side thoroughly deserved the victory, saying: “When you get what you deserve at the end there’s no better feeling. I’m so proud of the team and the way we controlled our emotions and navigated through the different stages of the game. We showed the conviction, the courage the desire and the quality we need to get where we want to be.”

However, things could’ve been very different. Gabriel may not have even been on the pitch to bag the late winner if Nick Woltemade had made more of a bust-up with the Brazilian earlier in the match, where the defender appeared to punch the Newcastle striker away from the ball.

Speaking Sky Sports’ Ref Watch, Gallagher said: “I think he’s lucky he didn’t actually strike him properly, because where he’s got lucky is is the referee hasn’t seen it, it’s gone to VAR and the VAR say red card or nothing, and it’s decided it’s not a red card. I don’t think it’s a red card, but I think if the referee sees it he’s certainly going to get a yellow card.”

Gabriel fortunate Woltemade didn't go down

Had the Newcastle striker made more of the incident and gone to ground, the Arsenal centre-back could have been in trouble, given that he clearly makes contact with the German’s face, albeit without a great deal of strength.

That said, the Magpies can also consider themselves fortunate that the decision to award Arsenal a penalty in the first half was overturned, with VAR getting involved after Jarred Gillett pointed to the spot for what he perceived to be a foul on Viktor Gyokeres.

Decisions went against both teams during the match, but Arteta’s side ultimately showed great character to come out on top, moving just two points behind Premier League leaders Liverpool in the process.

Smriti Mandhana, Rachel Priest fifties keep Western Storm top

Openers put on 133 in 13.5 overs as Yorkshire Diamonds slump to third defeat in four

ECB Reporters Network15-Aug-2019Western Storm’s relentless march towards next month’s Kia Super League Finals Day continued with a fifth straight win as openers Smriti Mandhana and Rachel Priest demolished a 152 target to beat Yorkshire Diamonds by nine wickets at York’s Clifton Park. The table-topping Storm initially stymied the Diamonds progress having elected to bowl, with five run-outs coming in the last 16 balls in a total of 151 for 9.Hollie Armitage top-scored with a career best 59 off 56 balls from number three before Sophie Luff threw in from the legside boundary to bring out a quartet of run-outs.Armitage’s innings was then dwarfed in comparison by Indian left-hander Mandhana and New Zealand’s Priest, who shared 133 inside 14 overs.Mandhana hit 70 off 47 balls and wicketkeeper Priest, who also had a hand in all five run-outs, made 72 not out off 43.It means at the halfway stage in their campaign, the Storm already seem destined for a place at Finals Day at Hove on September 1 having secured a bonus-point victory with 5.1 overs remaining.Armitage, strong on the sweep, shared a third-wicket stand of 60 inside eight overs with Indian Jemimah Rodrigues, advancing the Diamonds from 47 for 2 in the seventh over. The diminutive Rodrigues (28) played one particularly memorable lofted cover drive for four off the offspin of compatriot Deepti Sharma.Storm new-ball duo Claire Nicholas and Freya Davies struck, with Alyssa Healy caught at square leg on the pull off Nicholas’ offspin for 12.Lauren Winfield was stumped by Priest for 18 off seamer Sonia Odedra, with the ball trickling back towards the wicketkeeper off pad.Davies later bowled Armitage in the 20th over amidst the run out carnage, but England’s Anya Shrubsole was clearly the pick of the bowlers with 1 for 16 from four overs: she had Rodrigues caught at mid-off by Mandhana.Three of the five run-outs came in the 19th over – bowled by Shrubsole – as Yorkshire crucially stumbled. All five runs outs occurred in search of a second run going to wicketkeeper Priest.Last year, Mandhana was the KSL’s leading run-scorer with 421 from nine innings, including two fifties and a hundred. Here, she displayed similar dominance on the way to a 29-ball fifty, achieved in the eighth over when the Storm were 86 without loss.74 runs came off the powerplay, while opening partner Priest scored only eight of the first 58.Mandhana was particularly strong over cover and to long-off and, in the fifth over, hoisted legspinner Katie Levick for her only six.Priest played her part as the partnership approached 100, hitting seamer Alice Davidson-Richards for three successive boundaries to end the sixth. In 2017, the Kiwi had hit an unbeaten century in a 10-wicket win at this venue. Happy to camp on the back foot and hit powerfully to leg, she reached her fifty off 33 balls in the 10th over with the score at 102 without loss. She finished the game with two sixes in three balls off Linsey Smith’s left-arm spin. The Diamonds, for whom Davidson-Richards had Mandhana caught at long-on, have now lost three from four games.

Mitch Marsh and Chadd Sayers sign for Glamorgan and Gloucestershire

Marsh will be available for the Vitality Blast after Australia A duties while Sayers hopes to put himself back in Test contention following an injury-interrupted domestic summer

Alex Malcolm05-Jun-2019Australia all-rounder Mitchell Marsh has joined his brother Shaun Marsh as Glamorgan’s second overseas signing for the Vitality T20 Blast while Gloucestershire have signed Australia one-Test swing bowler Chadd Sayers for a six-week county championship stint.Mitch Marsh was not selected for Australia’s World Cup campaign after being dropped from all three forms at international level in the last 12 months due to a form slump and lost his Cricket Australia contract. However, he has been selected for the Australia A tour of the UK which begins on June 15 and concludes on July 27. Marsh will only be available for Glamorgan after his Australia A commitments have concluded and if he does play in the Australia versus Australia A game prior to the Ashes on July 23 he will miss Glamorgan’s first four matches of the Blast.”He comes with a huge reputation in T20 cricket, with plenty of international experience and has also played in the IPL and the Big Bash so he knows how to play T20 cricket on the big stage,” Glamorgan’s director of cricket Mark Wallace said.”We were looking for a dual threat player, someone who can bowl with good pace and can bat in different positions in the order. He’s a very powerful striker of the ball and can either bat high up or lower down and give us some impetus in those middle overs as well so we’re delighted to have him on board.”The Marsh brothers are two of a number of Australians set for the Blast. Australia wicketkeeper Alex Carey recently signed with Sussex, while Billy Stanlake (Derbyshire), Adam Zampa (Essex), D’Arcy Short (Durham) and Ashton Agar (Birmingham) are also set to play.Chadd Sayers is mobbed by his team-mates after picking up his first Test wicket•AFP

Meanwhile, Gloucestershire have signed Sayers as an overseas county championship replacement for injured South Australia teammate Daniel Worrell.Sayers had an interrupted Australian domestic season due to an ongoing knee issue, after making his Test debut in Johannesburg in March 2018. He had long been seen as a possible Ashes candidate but his injury-interrupted season saw him miss out on Australia A selection for the tour of the UK.Sayers replaces Worrall, who was sent home after suffering stress fractures in his lower back. Sayers will be with the Gloucestershire squad from June 11 to July 25 meaning he will be available for six division two championship matches, as well as two Vitality Blast matches.

ICC 'monitoring' India-Pakistan situation ahead of World Cup encounter

David Richardson says ‘no indications’ from either board that June 16 match will not go ahead as planned

Nagraj Gollapudi19-Feb-2019The ICC and the 2019 World Cup organising committee remain confident that the tournament’s biggest match, to be played between India and Pakistan on June 16 in Manchester, will go ahead despite the volatile situation between the two countries in the wake of a terrorist attack in Kashmir last week. With the World Cup starting in exactly 100 days, there are have been scattered voices that want India to boycott the group match against Pakistan. The fixture itself remains the biggest game of the tournament: nearly half a million applications for tickets poured in as soon as the ICC opened its ballot. Even the World Cup final, to be played on July 14 at Lord’s, paled in comparison with about a quarter of a million applications.Although neither board has made a public comment, internally top officials from both the BCCI and PCB agree that it is too far-fetched right now to predict the situation in June. The ICC’s quarterly meetings take place in Dubai next week, where representatives from both boards will have a chance to conduct discussions in person.David Richardson, the ICC’s outgoing chief executive officer, said that “no indications” have been sent from either board about the World Cup clash not taking place. “We haven’t written to the boards as yet,” Richardson told ESPNcricinfo in London, where he was present to mark the 100-day countdown to the tournament. “Our thoughts are with the people that were impacted by the incident. And we are monitoring the situation with our members including the BCCI and PCB. Certainly there are no indications any of the matches, including the Pakistan-India match, will not be played as planned at the World Cup. But as I say we will continue to monitor the situation.”This is not the first time the fate of an India-Pakistan match at a global event has been called into question due to the fragile relations between the two neighbours. However, Richardson remained optimistic. “Sport, and cricket in particular, is perfectly placed – it has the wonderful ability to bring people together to unite communities. And hopefully cricket can be used in this fashion rather than a way of [dividing] people.”For Steve Elworthy, the World Cup tournament director, the India-Pakistan contest will be a marquee occasion. “It is probably one of the biggest sporting events in the world,” Elworthy, the former South Africa fast bowler, said. “You think of that match and you think of the passion, the support, the audience, the [number of] people who applied for tickets.”David Richardson, Steve Elworthy and UK sports minister Mims Davies at an event marking the 100-day countdown to the World Cup•Getty ImagesElworthy was also the tournament director for the 2017 Champions Trophy, where India and Pakistan played each other twice including the final where Sarfaraz Ahmed’s team won convincingly. It only increases the needle for the Old Trafford match on June 16.And that can be seen in the record demand for tickets, which Elworthy pointed out was significantly bigger than for the final. “That particular game, we had over 400,000 applications for tickets, which is an incredible number. The stadium only holds 25,000 people. So there are a number of disappointed people. That’s just locally, but [there is also] the audience globally.”To put that [number] in perspective, England v Australia was around 230-240,000. And the final was around about 260-270,000 applications for tickets. So that gives you a bit of perspective for the demand for this match [India v Pakistan]. It’s a big game. They could end up playing each other in the final [too], you never know.”In the scenario where one team decided to forfeit the match, Richardson said the ICC would open the rule books to ascertain the repercussions. “There is justifiable non-compliance and unjustifiable,” he said. “That we will have to deal with under the playing regulations.”But neither Richardson nor Elworthy are currently too concerned – both said they would not be having any sleepless nights. Not yet. Elworthy even afforded a big smile when asked who he thought would win the game.”Good question,” he said. “We’ve had them play a couple of times against each other, haven’t we? And Pakistan won the last one about 18 months ago. That was an incredible game, down at The Oval. But then, India have beaten Pakistan in the group stages. They are very balanced teams. It is very hard to choose because it is just that passion, that rivalry that you can’t really account for. And when they get on to the field what takes players over, what drives them, and motivates them. So whatever the result we are going to see an incredible game of cricket.”

Aaron Boone Ripped for His Postgame Comment About the Yankees

The New York Yankees played another sloppy game on Wednesday night and their defensive miscues cost them, as they fell to the AL East-leading Blue Jays, 8–4, in Toronto.

The struggling Yankees had a rough series in the field against the Blue Jays, as they committed seven errors over the three-game set. Four of those came Wednesday night. They could have had a fifth one but this misplayed ball by right fielder Cody Bellinger was ruled a triple.

Yankees manager Aaron Boone, who was ejected from Wednesday night's game after getting in a heated argument with the home plate umpire in seventh inning, defended his team's fielding during his postgame press conference.

"Look, I think we have a very good defensive club, but clearly in the seven games we've played here, not giving them extra outs whether it's through error or not making a play that we need to make, that's cost us in these two series up here where we were really hurt," Boone said.

Here are a few of the error committed by the "very good defensive club."

The Yankees have committed 52 errors on the season, which puts them in the middle of the pack in the AL. That's not horrible, but it's also not great as they are 15–24 in games that they commit at least one error.

Fans, who still can remember the costly miscues in Game 5 of the World Series last year, ripped Boone for his comments:

The Yankees are now 56–46 on the season and sit four games back of the Blue Jays in the AL East.

Liverpool now leading race for "unpredictable" £10m forward who Slot loves

Liverpool are now leading the race to sign an “unpredictable” forward who Arne Slot is a big fan of, according to a report.

Reds eyeing Mohamed Salah replacements

Mohamed Salah remains in negotiations over a new contract, with his current deal set to expire at the end of the campaign, however L’Equipe journalist Loic Tanzi has now dropped a promising update on the Egyptian’s future.

The Paris Saint-Germain insider wrote: “Mohamed Salah to Paris can be done, but it likely won’t happen as Salah is likely to stay at Liverpool. He’s in talks over an extension,’”

Until a deal is done, however, the Reds will need to be savvy and make sure they have some suitable replacements lined up, just in case the nightmare scenario of Salah leaving in the summer comes to fruition.

Slot has been named as a big admirer of Real Madrid’s Brahim Diaz, who is now a target to replace Salah, while Borussia Dortmund’s Jamie Gittens and Brentford’s Bryan Mbeumo also remain on the shortlist.

Liverpool may sign £19m star in next few days; Arne Slot thinks he's ideal

The Reds are keen on signings.

ByDominic Lund Jan 21, 2025

According to a report from Africa Foot (via Sport Witness), Liverpool are now leading the race for Feyenoord’s Anis Hadj Moussa, who Slot is believed to be fascinated by. The 22-year-old’s performances this season have caught the eye of a number of European clubs, but the Reds are in pole position at the moment, lining up a deal that is more likely to take place in the summer.

Feyenoord'sAnisHadjMoussacelebrates scoring their third goal

Head of recruitment Barry Hunter is engaged in active talks with the forward’s agent, Mohamed Dahmane, and the plan is for the deal to be finalised for €12m (£10m) at the end of the season. However, that fee may increase depending on the Algerian’s performances in the second half of the campaign.

Exciting news for Liverpool

It is promising that Liverpool are in a good position to sign the winger this summer, particularly for a fee of just £10m, as he has put in some impressive performances in his debut season with Feyenoord.

The Paris-born attacker has six goals to his name in all competitions, picking up three goals and one assist in five Champions League games.

The former Vitesse man’s incredible dribbling ability was on show last season too, ranking in the 99th percentile for progressive carries per 90 over the past year, when compared to his positional peers.

Dutch legend Ruud Gullit has tipped Hadj Moussa for future success, while also indicating he has the versatility to play in multiple positions, saying: “Hadj Moussa is impressive, he remains clear-headed and creative when he moves forward with the ball. He is an unpredictable player, capable of surprising his opponents at any moment. He makes very good passes and can play on the right wing.

“He excels in every position, but above all, he is a player who dares.”

At just £10m, Hadj-Moussa could be a real bargain this summer, but there is every chance he will drive his price up over the next few months if he continues to perform at a similar level.
