White: Will be 'surprised' if Boult is not in New Zealand's 2023 World Cup squad

Outgoing NZC chief says while the priority will be given to contracted players, conversations with Boult have been “very positive”

Days after Trent Boult expressed his desire to feature in the 2023 ODI World Cup, New Zealand Cricket’s outgoing chief executive officer David White has said he will be “surprised” if the left-arm quick does not represent New Zealand in the tournament later this year.Boult was released from his central contract last August at his own request in order to spend more time with his family and increase his availability for franchise leagues around the world. However, White, who had taken NZC’s charge in 2012, said that centrally contracted players would be at the front of the selection queue.”We have made it very clear that priority is given to centrally-contracted players,” White told New Zealand radio station this week. “That was the case during the summer. It is very important for the integrity of the competition and of the contracting model that we give priority to our centrally-contracted players.”Related

Trent Boult: 'It felt bizarre to have a Test on down the road and not play in it'

Boult still has a 'big desire' to play ODI World Cup in India

White revealed that NZC had kept the communication open with Boult, hinting the seamer was likely to be on the flight to India for the World Cup.”In saying that, we’ve had a lot of conversations with Trent over the last few weeks and months,” White said. “I’d be very surprised if he wasn’t representing New Zealand in the World Cup, and we’re having very positive conversations with him.”Boult has not played international cricket since New Zealand’s T20 World Cup semi-final defeat to Pakistan in November 2022 and has not played a Test match in nearly a yearIn February, New Zealand’s coach Gary Stead said he had spoken to Boult ahead of the two-Test series at home against England and explained why he would not be in contention despite injuries to Matt Henry and Kyle Jamieson at the time. Even then, Stead had left Boult optimistic for future New Zealand assignments.”It does not mean we have ruled Trent out from anything in the future,” Stead had said. “There will be ongoing discussion and we’re not sure what the landscape of the cricket world will look like in six months. It might change again.”Boult, who is currently playing in the IPL for Rajasthan Royals, told ESPNcricinfo in a recent chat that he remains hopeful about playing another ODI World Cup, a desire which took seed as soon as New Zealand lost the 2019 World Cup in a heart-breaking finish. “I remember after the 2019 final, I said to Kane [Williamson] that we’ve got to be there again, come 2023 in India. One hundred percent, I’ve got that desire to be out there.”‘Representing country still the pinnacle’T20 leagues like the IPL offer big money and a better work-life balance, which force players to reconsider their career paths. Along with Boult, New Zealand allrounder James Neeesham too had declined a central contract, while Colin de Grandhomme retired from international cricket. But White felt a lot of present-day cricketers still preferred representing their country over playing in franchise cricket.”I think that the players still say that Test cricket and representing their country is still the pinnacle,” he said. “[With] the majority of the players, that is certainly the case. It would be fair to say that a lot of the players that are going into leagues are former [internationals], or [are] towards the end of their career. So I am not so concerned about that.”The really positive thing about cricket compared to a lot of other sports is that it’s being bankrolled primarily by India, which is now the most populated country in the world. There are huge resources and a lot of revenue, which is good for cricket. So it’s just important that New Zealand Cricket ensures that we stay relevant. That way we influence the international game at the ICC level, and we can compete at the highest level.”I think over the next year or two, there’ll be a little bit more certainty about where that goes. But the international game is strong. I think we are very well-positioned, and I’m very proud of what we have achieved over my tenure.”

'That man wasn't happy about anything' – Djed Spence admits Antonio Conte 'shattered my confidence' at Tottenham after being branded a club signing by Italian coach

Tottenham full-back Djed Spence has claimed that former coach Antonio Conte completely "shattered my confidence".

    WHAT HAPPENED?

Spence moved to Spurs from Middlesbrough in the summer of 2022 after helping Nottingham Forest secure Premier League promotion while on loan at the club in the 2021-22 campaign. Spence's dream move, however, quickly turned into a nightmare as he fell out of favour under then-manager Antonio Conte, who publicly claimed it was the club's decision to sign him. The defender was subsequently sent on a six-month loan to Rennes in the second half of the 2022-23 season.

  • WHAT DJED SPENCE SAID

Recalling his experience of working under Conte on the , Spence said: "It wasn’t a nice feeling. Especially as I was coming to the club on a high, I was confident, I was buzzing, had just won promotion. Then it was like running into a brick wall. It shattered my confidence a bit, obviously, I’m young. It’s not nice to hear.

"I knew it was rubbish at the time. It wasn’t a nice feeling. I was even going into the club like [puffs out cheeks] and, ‘What am I doing?’ I feel like whatever I did, that man [Conte] wasn’t happy about anything. Even if you did the right things, you were like, ‘Did I do the right thing?’ Cos he’s not really a complimenting guy. It gets to a point where you don’t really need validation from a coach. You just go, ‘Oh’. I probably had one conversation with him."

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Conte was sacked by Spurs in March 2023, but Spence did not get an opportunity to make an appearance for the north London side in Ange Postecoglou's first season at the helm as he was loaned out to Leeds United and then Genoa. However, Spence has managed to break into Postecoglou's lineup in the current campaign.

The English full-back added: "When a new manager comes in you think, 'Alright, everyone's going to get a fair chance, he's going to have a look at everyone'. With me, I don't think that was really the case. But that's part of the game of football. Football's not fair. [Postecoglou] just said basically I need to go out and play and that's when I ended up going to Leeds.

"Sometimes you might not get a chance that you feel like you deserve. I've always known I was good enough. People say, 'It's good to see he's got a second chance and he's doing well'. I never really got the first chance. This is my first chance and I'm taking it. I'm just happy I worked hard, I stayed consistent and I was ready."

'WITH CONTE TRAINING WAS VERY REPETITIVE'

On Conte's methods of training, Spence said: "I feel like with Conte [training] was very repetitive. We would literally do the same situation every day. With Ange, it’s a bit different. We do change it. He switches it up every day. I think I’ve been a victim of being too humble. Thinking things are just going to happen by not doing nothing and not saying nothing. But sometimes you have to express yourself.

"In my first year at Tottenham, I feel I gave a bit too much respect to the players and the surroundings because it’s Tottenham. I came from Forest, I’m going to the Premier League, a top-six club, and I thought, 'Phew, this is big'. I feel I gave them too much respect in regards I didn’t really be myself. When I went there, I saw players who were big names like Harry Kane and Sonny [Heung-min Son], and I didn’t want to step on anyone’s toes. But that was probably my biggest mistake, doing that and not expressing myself how I should have. I’d say this season [that's changed]. I’ve got no time to waste now. I’ve got to go get it, it’s time."

West Brom handed boost over Carlos Corberan staying after Southampton offer

An encouraging new development regarding the future of West Brom manager Carlos Corberan has emerged, following a fresh development before the weekend Championship action.

West Brom prepare for Bristol City clash

The Baggies return to the field on Saturday afternoon, welcoming Bristol City to The Hawthorns for another important game in the promotion race. Their weekend opponents sit 11th in the Championship table and only five points adrift of Corberan’s eighth-place side, highlighting the importance of the game, as they look to pull eight points clear of them.

West Brom have endured a frustrating period of form in recent months, topping the table back in September before going on a long winless run, with so many draws thrown in. In fact, they have drawn 11 of their 21 league matches so far this season, leading to them falling out of the playoff places.

West Bromwich Albion manager Carlos Corberan.

For Corberan, it has been such a frustrating period, and considering that managers are ultimately judged on results, there has been some understandable criticism aimed at him in recent times, during a season in which many expected the Baggies to be one of the leading contenders to win the Championship title.

That said, the 41-year-old has largely impressed since taking charge at West Brom back in 2022, guiding his side into the playoffs last season, being beaten by Southampton in the semi-finals. Now, a significant update has emerged regarding the future of the Baggies manager.

Encouraging update over Corberan's West Brom future

Despite a claim from AS [via Sport Witness] that Southampton have sent an “important offer” to West Brom boss Corberan, following the sacking of Russell Martin, they have instead agreed a deal with Ivan Juric, according to Fabrizio Romano on X.

West Bromwich Albion manager Carlos Corberan.

For all the disappointment at West Brom’s form at times this season, this update still represents a real boost for the Baggies, considering what an influential figure Corberan has been over the past couple of years.

The fact that a Premier League club were actively trying to prise him away from a Championship club says a lot about his credentials, but it looks as though he is staying put. To see him leave The Hawthorns midway through the season would be a bitter pill to swallow.

Hopefully, Corberan feels that West Brom are the perfect club for him for the time being, believing that he can guide his West Brom team into the top flight in the coming months, masterminding an upturn in fortunes.

Corberan must now ditch West Brom star who earns even more than Maja

This West Bromwich Albion star could soon be heading for the exit door.

ByKelan Sarson Dec 20, 2024

That said, the lure of the Premier League is great for so many managers, both in terms of being able to test yourself against some of the best coaches in the world and also the financial benefits.

It remains to be seen if Corberan’s head could be turned by another approach from a different club, assuming Juric does complete a move to Southampton, but his sole focus is now hopefully on sealing promotion in the coming months.

Brendan Rodgers frustrated by "disappointing" behind-scenes issue at Celtic

Brendan Rodgers has admitted his frustration at an off-field issue happening at Celtic currently, claiming the situation is a “disappointing” one.

Celtic cruise into another cup final

The Hoops faced Aberdeen in the Scottish League Cup semi-finals on Saturday, in a game that looked exciting on paper, as it pitted the two teams level on points at the top of the Scottish Premiership currently against each other.

Instead, Celtic ran riot at Hampden Park, beating their rivals 6-0 and scoring three goals in either half, booking a place in the final against Rangers next month.

It was a scintillating performance by the Hoops, who once again showed why they are the most prominent team in Scotland, even though Aberdeen have impressed in their own right so far this season. While the result at Hampden was a memorable one, there was still something irking Rodgers after the game that needs to be addressed at Celtic moving forward.

Rodgers disappointed by Celtic team leaks

Speaking to reporters [via RTE], Rodgers admitted his displeasure at his Celtic starting lineups constantly being leaked before games, saying the individual doing it cannot call themselves a Hoops supporter.

“It’s obviously clearly disappointing. It’s something that we’ve seen before, and it’s not ideal, however it comes out. In the modern game, there’s no real secrets in football. That’s the reality of it. But it’s not nice when it gets out there. And especially if it’s out from Celtic supporters.

“It might feel great for someone’s ego to put it out and pass it on to other people. But I can tell you as a manager that I’ve had that before with other teams.

“And when I’ve got to know about it, it has really, really helped me in my preparation. So whoever is putting it out, if it’s someone from Celtic, you’re not a Celtic supporter. You’re not a Celtic supporter because you’re not helping Celtic. It’s as simple as that. If you’re not a Celtic supporter, we will do everything we can to find out.”

Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers looks on.

It is good to see Rodgers speak out about this problem, and as he rightly points out, the modern game is full of antics like this, with people wanting to gain notoriety, even without necessarily revealing themselves.

Supporters drink in so much content these days, with their impatience meaning they need to hear news as soon as possible, meaning even waiting until an hour before kick off to see starting lineups feels like a struggle.

If the person leaking the Celtic team supports the Hoops, they would be wise to listen to Rodgers and stop risking giving opponents an early advantage, in terms of allowing the opposition manager to know exactly what team their side will be facing.

8/10 Celtic star must permanently replace Rodgers favourite

The Celtic defender should be a regular in the team, even with the usual first-choice fit.

Thankfully, these leaks don’t appear to be having much impact on Celtic’s season currently, but the boss has spoken, and his demands need to be listened to.

Tougher test awaits England's powerful batting as Australia's big guns return

Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood, Pat Cummins and Adam Zampa could all be back in Canberra

Andrew Miller11-Oct-2022

Big picture

After touching down in Australia for the build-up to their winter’s main event, England duly hit the ground running in a richly entertaining opening T20I in Perth. The narrowness of the eight-run victory perhaps masked the extent of the gains made on a Sunday night that featured a total of 408 runs – the second-highest tally ever recorded in Australia. Most particularly there was Jos Buttler’s instant return to form after his lengthy injury lay-off, and another palpitating display of raw speed from Mark Wood, whose three wickets in ten balls proved the true difference between the teams in an otherwise bat-dominated game.Factor in Alex Hales’ Player-of-the-Match-winning 84 from 51 balls, and another incisive display of left-arm lankiness from Reece Topley, and there were plenty of reasons to believe in Buttler’s assertion that England will be a “dangerous” opposition in the fast-approaching T20 World Cup.And yet, the defending champions – as if anyone needs reminding – are not just the hosts of both this series and next week’s tournament, they were also missing a knot of key East Coast-based personnel, all of whom are likely to be welcomed back over the coming two games in Canberra. Besting an attack boasting the big three of Mitchell Starc, Pat Cummins and Josh Hazlewood will be a very different challenge for Buttler’s men, but should they manage to do so, they could yet seek an upgrade from their current dark-horse World Cup status.Related

  • Livingstone targets England's final T20 World Cup warm-up for return from injury

  • Marsh on one-day captaincy: 'Probably not…I'm out of the race'

Either way, reading too much into this week’s events would be careless, however. England vs Australia is rarely less than full-throttle, but the warm-up nature of this series was perhaps epitomised when Buttler chose to hold his horses at the potential flashpoint of the opening contest – Matthew Wade’s apparent hand-off on Wood as he closed in on a caught-and-bowled opportunity. There can have been few more textbook examples of “obstructing the field” in international history, but Buttler – all too well acquainted with the media frenzy that can follow atypical dismissals – seemed to reason that the potential for uproar was just too distracting to countenance. The fact that Wade was unable to extend his recent proud record of closing out run-chases seemed vindication enough for now. Let’s see what happens in the cut and thrust of knock-out cricket.Wood, however, is unlikely to be a factor again on Wednesday. England’s cautious handling of their prize asset meant he was limited to two (singularly explosive) outings on their recent seven-match tour of Pakistan, and he is sure to be held back once again to ensure he’s in prime form when they return to Perth on October 22 for their campaign opener against Afghanistan. Chris Jordan is primed for his first outing since August, after injuring his finger during the Hundred.

Recent form

In the spotlight

Tim David has surely done enough to earn a starting place in the World Cup, but just when it seemed he was making an unanswerable case he had his credentials frazzled a touch at Perth Stadium in another snortingly quick display from Wood – his spliced pull resulted in a third-ball duck and a fatal derailing of Australia’s previously serene run-chase. Nevertheless, David still has credit aplenty, not least after a ballistic 42 from 20 balls against West Indies last week, and particularly in light of Steven Smith’s own struggles to impart any power into his faltering short-form game. One uninspiring outing later, and the narrative hasn’t yet shifted for the recalled Ben Stokes. His star quality can never be doubted, and when it comes to the crunch of a World Cup, who would dare bet against his force of personality having a decisive say? But in the meantime, his quest for form in an extremely condensed build-up remains the hottest topic in England’s ranks. To some extent, the continued absence of Liam Livingstone gives England and Stokes licence to keep pushing for that break-out display. But, in a situation that rather mirrors the Smith dilemma in Australia’s ranks, these are not like-for-like options. The peak performance of Test greats such as Smith and Stokes may be beyond the scope of their contemporaries, but in the sprint of a T20 innings, is there enough road for either man to reach top speed? It’s a question that may yet determine both team’s campaigns.

Team news

The return of the big guns beckons in Canberra, where Starc, Cummins, Hazlewood, Adam Zampa and Glenn Maxwell will all be available for selection after sitting out of the series opener in Perth, means Nathan Ellis will be unlucky again – he hasn’t even travelled with the squad – after taking a brilliant 3 for 20 on a night when Australia’s other 16 overs yielded 188 for 3. At the top of the order, Aaron Finch has confirmed he will resume his partnership with David Warner, after making way for Cameron Green in Australia’s last three outings. One question is whether they want to get another innings into Smith or give Josh Inglis a pre-World Cup hit.Australia (probable) 1 David Warner, 2 Aaron Finch (capt), 3 Mitchell Marsh, 4 Glenn Maxwell, 5 Marcus Stoinis, 6 Tim David, 7 Matthew Wade (wk), 8 Pat Cummins, 9 Mitchell Starc, 10 Adam Zampa, 11 Josh HazlewoodHales has reaffirmed his credentials at the top of the order, and will surely now be Buttler’s first-choice partner for the World Cup. The rest of England’s dominoes will fall into place from there. Livingstone has indicated that he is targeting the final warm-up against Pakistan for his comeback from an ankle injury, so the two Canberra matches will be further opportunities for the remainder of England’s middle-order to jostle for their roles. Dawid Malan was shunted out of his No. 3 berth to give Stokes extra game-time in Perth – to no great avail as it turned out – but will be eager to reacquaint himself with Australia’s high-kicking pitches, which ought to suit his style. On the bowling front, Chris Jordan could be set for his first outing of the winter after a finger injury, while David Willey is also waiting in the wings. Mark Wood and Reece Topley are the likeliest candidates for a rest.England (probable) 1 Jos Buttler (capt & wk), 2 Alex Hales, 3 Dawid Malan, 4 Ben Stokes, 5 Harry Brook, 6 Moeen Ali, 7 Sam Curran, 8 Chris Woakes, 9 Chris Jordan, 10 David Willey, 11 Adil Rashid.

Pitch and conditions

Bowlers have performed reasonably well in the three men’s T20Is at this ground with an overall economy rate of 7.30 – the third lowest of all venues in Australia. The forecast is for a dry day on Wednesday, less so for Friday’s second game.

Stats and trivia

  • England’s men have never yet played an international fixture in Canberra. Manuka Oval has hosted a men’s T20I in each of the past three seasons, most recently against Sri Lanka in February, and 10 ODIs, dating back to South Africa vs Zimbabwe in the 1992 World Cup.
  • Australia’s men have won seven of their nine fixtures in Canberra, across all three formats – one Test win against Sri Lanka, four ODI wins, and two T20I wins. Their only defeats (one in each white-ball format) both came against India in December 2020.
  • Sunday’s eight-run defeat in Perth was the first time in 14 matches, dating back to the start of their successful T20 World Cup campaign in October, that Australia had failed to win when batting second.

Quotes

“The best T20 teams in the world over the last five, six years, have that flexibility… we’re almost a team within a team.”

“I think that’s the most important thing. We’ve had a really good chat and things have been fine. There’s been no air-clearing at all, we just sat down with Jos [Buttler] and said our goal is to win the World Cup. It’s been really good, really smooth.”

£120k-per-week Tottenham ace now seriously considering exit to La Liga side

An exit from Tottenham Hotspur is beckoning for one member of Ange Postecoglou’s side, as a Madrid-based side look to take advantage.

Players likely to leave Spurs in 2025

Postecoglou, chairman Daniel Levy and technical director Johan Lange could decide to offload a few members of the Lilywhites squad when the turn of the year comes around – and there are a few interesting names in the frame to leave.

Club chiefs convinced their "extraordinary" player is set to join Tottenham

There is a theory growing within the side.

Timo Werner scored his first goal since March in Tottenham’s much-needed 2-1 win over Premier League champions Man City in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday, helping to guide Spurs into the quarter-finals, where they will face off against City’s cross-town rivals Manchester United in north London.

While this could go some way into eventually redeeming himself to the club’s hierarchy, depending on how he builds upon the strike against Pep Guardiola’s men, it is believed Werner is likely to leave Tottenham and head back to RB Leipzig at the end of his loan spell – as things stand.

It has also been reported this week that summer signing Archie Gray could head out on loan in January, with the former Leeds United star struggling to establish himself as a regular Premier League starter as he’s relegated to a bit-part, cup-playing role in the squad.

Levy and Lange managed to shift plenty of deadwood in the summer window, with Joe Rodon, Emerson Royal, Oliver Skipp, Giovani Lo Celso, Eric Dier, Ryan Sessegnon, Ivan Perisic, Tanguy Ndombele, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Japhet Tanganga all departing N17 permanently.

One player they didn’t manage to offload, though, was left-back and forgotten man Sergio Reguilon. On a reported £120,000-per-week, according to the Manchester Evening News, the Spaniard has been deemed surplus to requirements by Postecoglou – who gave the green light for Reguilon to spend last term on various loan spells at United and Brentford.

Reguilon was attracting interest from Turkey and other European clubs in the summer, but a move never materialised for the former Real Madrid starlet.

Reguilon seriously considering Tottenham exit to Getafe

As per Spanish media, it is now believed that Reguilon is seriously considering a Tottenham exit to Getafe – who could offer him the opportunity to make a return to Madrid by signing him as a free agent in 2025.

It is a golden opportunity for the La Liga side to snap him up at zero cost, with Reguilon’s contract set to expire in the summer and up for grabs at zero cost. The ex-Sevilla star could technically sign a pre-contract in January, so Getafe may have an opportunity to nip in ahead of other interested sides to secure his signature.

Tottenham defender Sergio Reguilon.

Once tipped to shine under Antonio Conte, with pundit Noel Whelan calling him a “quality player” (Football Insider), things haven’t exactly gone to plan for Reguilon and the writing now appears on the wall for his departure next year.

Whilst the player has been spotted training with the senior squad, he is yet to make a single appearance in all competitions this season, and has been named in just one matchday squad so far – Spurs’ trip to Coventry City in the Carabao Cup.

ECB announces departure of James Taylor from head scout role

The reorganisation of England men’s coaching and selection structures has continued with the ECB announcing the departure of James Taylor from his role as head scout.Taylor, the former England, Nottinghamshire and Leicestershire batter, joined the ECB in 2018, working beneath national selector, Ed Smith. When Smith’s role was made redundant in 2021, Taylor moved into the scouting role, assisting head coach, Chris Silverwood, with selection. The arrival of Rob Key as England men’s managing director has already seen a number of changes, with separate head coaches appointed for red- and white-ball cricket, and the return to selection by a panel.Key is reportedly keen to bring back the national selector role, but is understood to be considering splitting the position by format, too. The Daily Mail last week linked former England batter Ian Bell with the job of Test selector.”James Taylor has been a great servant to English cricket both as a player and an excellent administrator over the past four years,” Key said. “He has a deep passion for the game and is attuned to the current demands of a modern cricketer, having played with and against most of the England set-up and pathway players.”Everyone at the ECB would like to thank James for his hard work and dedication and wish him well in the next chapter of his career.”

Taylor, 32, was forced into retirement in 2016 after being diagnosed with the heart condition, arrhythmogenic right ventricular cardiomyopathy, having played seven Tests and 27 ODIs for England. He said: “It has been an honour to hold the position of selector for three years and the last year as head scout.”I would like to thank everyone at the ECB for all their support. We have had some fantastic highlights during that period that I will remember forever. The time is right for me to explore new opportunities, and I’m excited about what lies ahead.”
