Forward starred for Canaries in 2023-24Missed four months through fitness issuesNow chasing down Copa America gloryGettyWHAT HAPPENED?

The 24-year-old frontman has just enjoyed the most productive campaign of his career in front of goal – with 16 efforts recorded for Norwich in their bid to secure promotion back into the Premier League. That haul was achieved despite sitting out four months through injury.

AdvertisementWHAT SARGENT SAID

Sargent is now in the United States’ squad for a Copa America on home soil and has told the podcast of how he is managing fitness issues that have been troubling him since late 2022: “It is feeling good at the moment. It is kind of a day-by-day thing. I have been training with the guys the past couple of days and everything is going well. Hopefully it stays that way. For a while now, pretty much ever since the World Cup it is that balance to push the ankle or rest it. That has been a lot of talking with my club and national team. I am doing everything I can. After a big operation there are bound to be little things that aggravate the ankle. I didn’t know how it would be coming to the friendlies. It didn’t feel great but I put in a lot of work with the physios. Gregg [Berhalter] has put his faith in me to pull this around and get some minutes in this tournament and do well.”

GettyTHE BIGGER PICTURE

The USMNT are confident of holding their own in Copa America competition, with Sargent adding on collective ambition following a 5-1 friendly defeat to Colombia and 1-1 draw with Brazil: “I don’t know what went on in the Colombia game but it was day and night with Brazil in terms of our approach and mentality. That is the real US and we know in a tournament like this we all have to be dialled in and at our absolute best.

"This is a big moment and we need to show that grit and firepower and stick together as a team if we want to have a chance to win this thing. We want people to know that we have a lot of good young players coming up with the passion to play for that crest, and hopefully we represent that. As a group we have talked about it and when you go into a tournament the goal is to win it. But we know there are some of the best teams in the world. We might not have as many skilful players but as a team we can be better.”

WHAT NEXT FOR THE USMNT?

The United States will get their Copa America campaign up and running at AT&T Stadium against Bolivia on Sunday. A positive result in that contest will set them up for further Group C outings against Panama and Uruguay.

Man United plotting bid for Jurrien Timber

Manchester United are expected to have a big summer transfer window following the arrival of Erik ten Hag at Old Trafford, and now one of the Dutch coach’s former players has been linked with joining the manager.

What’s the latest?

According to Sky Sports Germany journalist Florian Plettenberg, Man United are plotting a move and are currently in talks for Ajax defender Jurrien Timber.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-man-united-news-transfer-rumours-gossip-and-more-nunez-ten-hag-nkunku-richarlison” title=”Read the latest Man United news!”]

Plettenberg tweeted: “Update Timber: FC Bayern inquired about him but it is said that the 20 y/o could join Ten Hag to MUFC!

“Talks with his management have taken place. Manchester United is seriously interested.”

It’s thought a deal could cost as much as £35m this summer.

Ten Hag would love him

There is no doubt that the Red Devils are in need of improving their squad and their defence has been an area that has been criticised this season, so if Ten Hag could bring in a player he knows can be effective in his style of play he would surely love to have him at the club.

The £27m-rated youngster who was hailed as “reliable” by Marco van Basten has had a great season with the Dutch coach winning the Eredivisie this season and has been giving glimpses of his outstanding defensive abilities.

According to SofaScore, Timber has won the majority of both his aerial and ground duels (67%), with an impressive 91% pass accuracy and making 2.4 tackles, 1.7 interceptions, 1.4 clearances and an astonishing 90.8 touches on average per game, proving that he has been a real solid presence for Ajax in his 30 league appearances.

However, it is not just his defensive attributes that have made Ten Hag desperate for the centre-back to join him at Old Trafford as his effectiveness in attacking opportunities is a massive bonus too.

The 20-year-old who has been described as a “top talent” has scored three goals, contributed two assists, created one big chance and has been successful in 72% of his dribbles for the Dutch Champions.

With that being said, signing the young talent could be a major coup for Manchester United and Ten Hag this summer if they can secure a deal for Timber in the transfer window.

Considering he has played for the new manager already he could be an instant success in the North West.

With change in format, Afghanistan look to change fortunes against West Indies too

With 12 months to go for the T20 World Cup, both teams will look to make positive strides in the opening game of the series

The Preview by Sreshth Shah13-Nov-2019

Big pictureAfghanistan must be hurting. Playing hosts to West Indies in their adopted home in India, their ODI campaign went so badly that the team’s losing streak in the format extended to 12 by the end of the series. There’s a mismatch in the philosophy of their batting (defensive) and bowling (attacking) units, and that gulf appears to have become deeper after the recent integration of a few young batsmen in the squad. But T20Is are Afghanistan’s best format. With a stockpile of mystery spinners and a batting unit that goes deep (if not always big) Afghanistan have made oppositions, especially when in the subcontinent, wary. There’s only one problem, though: they appear to have forgotten the art of winning.Last month, they shared the tri-nation T20I series trophy in Bangladesh because of a washed-out final. Prior to the title clash, they had lost two in a row, to Zimbabwe and Bangladesh.T20I defeats used to be rare for Afghanistan, back-to-back losses even more, but the only team since 2017 to hand them that fate in a bilateral series are West Indies.Although the West Indies side that blanked Afghanistan 3-0 in 2017 is vastly different from the squad that is touring India currently, there are a few similarities. The side is rejuvenated under a new captain – Kieron Pollard – and the influx of a new set of cricketers after the latest Caribbean Premier League season gives them an opportunity to blindside Afghanistan since they have seen very little of these players. What used to be Afghanistan’s advantage earlier has now shifted away from them, and if the visitors can negate the spin threat Afghanistan possess, there’s no reason why West Indies cannot top Afghanistan in the T20I series too.Form guideAfghanistan LLWWW (completed matches, most recent first)West Indies LLLLLIn the spotlightMujeeb Ur Rahman has, for long, been the junior in the trio of spinners Afghanistan have unleashed on their opponents. But as teams focused more and more on not giving wickets to Rashid Khan, they have ended up exposing themselves to Mujeeb’s guiles. The teenager was Afghanistan’s highest wicket-taker in the ODIs against West Indies, and earlier this year was the most successful spinner at the Shpageeza Premier League as well. In 2019, Mujeeb’s gone wicketless only once and takes a wicket every 15.66 runs. Not once has he conceded more than 30 runs in T20Is this year and as a new-ball bowler, the tone Mujeeb sets against a West Indian opening unit – that hasn’t seen much of him – may just be the difference between West Indies scoring a middling score and a big one.Opening batsman Brandon King made a useful 39 in his national debut for West Indies in their win in the third ODI and it won’t be surprising if he walks into the T20I team as well after a fantastic CPL 2019. A ninth-round pick during the CPL draft, King smacked 496 runs in 12 innings, at an average of 55.11 and a strike rate of 149.94 as an opener for Guyana Amazon Warriors to break down the door that was stopping him from wearing the West Indies maroon. A right-hand batsman who prefers hitting straight rather than square, the potential for King to make an impact in his first T20I series is massive. He’s a traditional stroke player, something missing among most of West Indies’ white-ball batsmen these days, and if he can get into his zone swiftly against Afghanistan, King has shown that the longer he stays in the middle, the more dangerous he gets.Team newsThere are plenty of youngsters in both squads, and with the T20 World Cup only 12 months away, expect a few new faces in the XIs. West Indies, however, will be without Nicholas Pooran, who was handed a four-match ban for ball tampering in the ODI series.Afghanistan (possible): 1 Hazratullah Zazai, 2 Ibrahim Zadran, 3 Javed Ahmadi, 4 Najibullah Zadran, 5 Asghar Afghan, 6 Gulbadin Naib, 7 Rashid Khan (capt), 8 Rahmanullah Gurbaz (wk), 9 Naveen-ul-Haq, 10 Sayed Shirzad, 11 Mujeeb Ur RahmanWest Indies (possible): 1 Lendl Simmons, 2 Evin Lewis, 3 Brandon King, 4 Denesh Ramdin (wk), 5 Sherfane Rutherford, 6 Kieron Pollard (capt), 7 Jason Holder, 8 Khary Pierre, 9 Hayden Walsh Jr, 10 Alzarri Joseph, 11 Sheldon CottrellPitch and conditionsA bug invasion in the third ODI forced players to wear masks, and with the game being played under floodlights in Lucknow again, another attack can’t be ruled out. North India is now experiencing the onset of winter, and dew is expected to play a big role as the evening progresses. With both teams expected to field multiple spin bowlers, there could be an effect. The night sky in Lucknow is expected to be hazy, and some reports suggest that the air quality could be hazardous.Stats and trivia West Indies will become the first team to play two T20Is at Lucknow’s Ekana Stadium, having played in the ground’s inaugural match against India in November 2018. Afghanistan’s spin bowlers have conceded 7.87 runs per over in 2019, but average more than six wickets per game for the side. Less than 12 months ago, Hayden Walsh Jr was playing for USA

Mohammad Abbas makes early dent in Gloucestershire reply against Leicestershire

Mohammad Abbas took three quick wickets before rain ended play early in Gloucestershire’s reply to a formidable Leicestershire first innings on the second day of the County Championship match at the Fischer County Ground.Abbas, moving the ball prodigiously through the air and off the pitch, dismissed Miles Hammond caught behind, James Bracey leg before and Gareth Roderick caught behind before the weather closed in, leaving the Pakistan international with 3 for 10 from seven overs.Resuming on 343 for 5, the Foxes had quickly lost nightwatchman Chris Wright, driving at a delivery from Chad Sayers and edging a straightforward catch to first slip.Harry Dearden joined Colin Ackermann in compiling a partnership of 46 for the seventh wicket before Dearden was also caught off an edged drive, this time by Roderick off the bowling of Josh Shaw, a fifth catch in the innings for the Gloucestershire wicket-keeper.Ackermann was joined at the crease by the busy Lewis Hill, and after enjoying one piece of good fortune when he edged Ryan Higgins at catchable height straight between the wicketkeeper and first slip – neither of whom moved a muscle towards the ball – Hill went for his shots, hitting seven boundaries before hooking a David Payne bouncer into the hands of Graeme van Buuren at deep backward square.Dieter Klein saw Ackermann through to a half-century before being dismissed leg before by Shaw, and last man Abbas did not last long, bowled through the gate by the occasional off-spin of Chris Dent. When Gloucestershire began their reply, however, Abbas responded in kind. Swinging the ball away from the visitors’ left-handed opening pair, he repeatedly beat the bat before Hammond finally edged a catch through to Hill behind the stumps.Bracey too was beaten on several occasions before being dismissed leg before, and Roderick went first ball to a delivery which bounced and took the edge.Benny Howell survived a concerted leg before appeal, and he and Dent would have been relieved men when the occasional showers, which had already seen the players leave the field twice, settled into steady rain and prevented any further play for the day.

Adrien Rabiot to the rescue! Juventus fight back to draw 1-1 with Salernitana as USMNT star Weston McKennie is hooked at half-time

  • WHAT HAPPENED?

Juventus' winless run stretched to six matches in all competitions despite Rabiot's second-half stoppage-time equaliser cancelling out as Niccolo Pierozzi's 27th-minute opener. The Old Lady had 25 shots and 68% possession but failed to break down Serie A's basement side. The result means Juventus stay fourth as their poor end of season form continues.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Juventus missed the chance to wrap up qualification for next season's Champions League as they failed to unlock the spirited and dogged visitors. While that goal is still likely to happen, Juventus are a side devoid of confidence at present and manager Massimiliano Allegri will be under even more pressure to keep his job.

  • USMNT IMPACT

McKennie has, largely, had an impressive season for Juventus – in stark contrast to his poor loan spell at Leeds United in the second half of last term. However, this game did not bring the best out of the midfielder and USMNT boss Gregg Berhalter is likely to decide against using him on the right heading into the Copa America this summer. His strengths lie in central midfield but as for Timothy Weah, to not be picked at all in a struggling Juventus squad may be a cause for concern.

    GOAL'S RATINGS

    Weston McKennie (5/10):

TNT Sports' commentator for the game described the 25-year-old's display as "one-paced" and it is hard to disagree with him. The American was played on the right, a role he has been utilised in multiple times this season, but he is far more effective in the middle of the park. He got no change out of Salernitana's defence out on the flank and made way at the break as one of three changes.

    WHAT HAPPENED?

The United States international was initially restricted to a bit-part role at Forest following his loan switch from Borussia Dortmund in the winter transfer window. Game time proved to be in short supply as he found himself stuck on the bench.

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

Another unfortunate knock also hindered Reyna’s cause at one stage, but he has been able to play his way into the thoughts of Nuno Espirito Santo. The 21-year-old playmaker was handed his full Premier League debut in a 2-2 draw with Wolves.

  • DID YOU KNOW?

He offered enough across that 71-minute performance to suggest that he could have an important role to play in Forest's bid to avoid relegation out of the English top-flight. Reyna has been included from the off again as Forest go in search of precious points against fellow strugglers Everton.

  • WHAT NEXT?

While Reyna has caught the eye for his country in 2024, helping them to CONCACAF Nations League glory, he has not started successive matches at club level since lining up for Dortmund in a Bundesliga meeting with Eintracht Frankfurt and DFB-Pokal clash with Hoffenheim on October 29 and November 1, 2023.

"The test results have been reviewed by two leading cardiologists and there are no obvious cardiac causes found from these thorough investigations so far. Frida has subsequently had a monitoring device fitted to record her heart function and will now undergo a progressive return to training protocol. Once Frida has been monitored for a full one-week period, her normal training will be closely reviewed and monitored, before a decision will be made on her returning to play.

Leicestershire romp home after Derbyshire's batting crumbles

Leicestershire put themselves firmly in the chase for the Vitality Blast quarter finals when they thrashed Derbyshire by 55 runs at Derby. The unpredictable North Group sprung another surprise when the Falcons collapsed dramatically chasing what looked a modest target of 150.The Foxes had been held to 149 for 7 with Mark Cosgrove’s 38 the top score as Matt Critchley claimed 2 for 25 in four overs of legspin. But the Falcons pressed the self-destruct button, slumping to 28 for 6, and were bowled out for 94 with Colin Ackermann taking 3 for 9 and Gavin Griffiths 3 for 14.There were signs of what was to come when, after starting steadily, the Foxes began to unravel once they tried to accelerate on a used pitch with three wickets falling in five overs.Harry Swindells failed to clear mid-off when he tried to hit Ravi Rampaul over the top and although Arron Lilley swung Logan van Beek for six over long-on, only 43 runs came from the powerplay.Cosgrove drove Alex Hughes for consecutive fours but Lilley sliced a cut at Luis Reece to point and Cosgrove’s attempt to disrupt Critchley’s line only ended in the hands of deep mid-wicket.Harry Dearden lifted Hughes over deep square for six but then drove to long off and when Ackermann was well caught by Reece diving forward at backward square in the 15th over, the Foxes had slipped to 106 for 5.The Falcons bowled with discipline on a pitch where the ball was not coming on and, backed up by smart fielding, did not allow the Foxes to break free and only 72 came from the last 10 overs.Aadil Ali drove Hughes for six and Callum Parkinson hit the last two balls of the innings from Rampaul for four but the Foxes total seemed below par until the Falcons top order disintegrated in the powerplay.Luis Reece sliced to point after pulling a ball into his helmet and although Wayne Madsen swung a free hit from Dieter Klein for six, he top-edged a reverse sweep at Ackermann and was caught at short third man.It got even worse for the home side in the third over as Billy Godleman sliced Griffiths to third man and Leus du Plooy pulled the next ball into the hands of deep square leg.Former Fox Darren Stevens was run out by Ackermann’s direct hit from cover when he failed to ground his bat and when Hughes swung another short ball to deep mid-wicket, the Falcons were in free-fall.Fynn Hudson-Prentice drove Parkinson for six but the former Derbyshire spinner responded by yorking Matt Critchley and the only consolation for the Falcons was they passed their previous lowest T20 score of 72, against the Foxes six years ago.
