Relaxed India not fussed about downtime before Test

With a day off followed by rain, it is possible that on match day, Virat Kohli may have last seen the pitch 72 hours ago, but India remain circumspect in their approach and insist there is no complacency

Sidharth Monga in Pallekele11-Aug-20172:45

Agarkar: Play Kuldeep, he’ll be useful in away Tests

India have travelled to the hills to play the final Test of the second series in a row. When they did so last, in Dharamsala against Australia, they had all sorts of questions to answer. Virat Kohli raced against time to be fit, a race he would eventually lose. The pitch was not a typical Indian track, so the selection was tricky. On the line was a series against Australia, who had shocked India by first taking the series lead, and then frustrated them by holding on to a draw in the third match. In the seemingly endless rolling green heights of Pallekele, though, things couldn’t have been more different. India have already won the series against a side whose inadequacies have been accentuated by injuries to key players. India’s first-ever overseas whitewash in a series of three Tests or longer is now a distinct possibility. There is one selection question because of the suspension of Ravindra Jadeja, but there are many takers waiting for the opportunity to get into the side.It is no big surprise then that when it rained a little on the morning before the Test, India called off their training. It is possible that on the morning of the the Test, captain Virat Kohli will have last seen the pitch about 72 hours ago. The day after their only training session in Pallekele, India went to visit a temple that originates from the mythological book Ramayana. While they were away, the groundsmen at Pallekele International Stadium unveiled a lush green pitch, one that could rival the hills around. But over the next three hours, they studiously clipped off a lot of the grass. Sri Lanka’s chief selector Sanath Jayasuriya stood there by the pitch, almost overseeing the process. This is not quite the same as Napier 2008-09, when India chose to reach the city of the Test on the afternoon before the match, but you suspect India’s preparation – rain or no rain – would have been different had Sri Lanka put up a stiffer fight in the series. At least India this time didn’t justify not looking at the pitch like MS Dhoni had done in legendary fashion in 2008-09. “The mind doesn’t know if it’s Napier or what you’re feeding. You come and say ‘this is Napier’, and it believes it’s Napier. If you see, it’s an abstract.” Famous last words. Dhoni pulled out of the Test with a bad back, and Gautam Gambhir and VVS Laxman had to dig deep to salvage a draw.India this time are a little more circumspect. “Not really,” Kohli said when asked if he remembered the last time he went into a Test without having had a look at the pitch a day before the toss. “I mean, it’s quite a different situation, but the management has gone to the stadium to have a look. We heard there were some changes to the pitch so they have gone to check how things look at this stage, so we will have more clarity on what we need to go in with. But I haven’t yet really gone in without looking at the wicket at least 8-10 hours before the game before this. So it’s probably a different kind of situation.”Sri Lanka captain Dinesh Chandimal inspects the pitch even as the groundstaff works on it•Associated PressAll this means India will likely travel to the ground on Saturday morning without a fixed XI in mind. The fact that India have been playing so much cricket of late means they can afford to take a day or two off when it comes to training.”You can say we are certainly better placed to be able to afford a couple of days off,” Kohli said. “Yesterday, we took an off voluntarily, and today, it just happened to rain. But the day before that, we had a good practice. Also, what you need to understand in places like Sri Lanka, it is very hot and humid. People sometimes end up doing too much at practice, and then, maybe, you don’t recover for a game. It might just be a good thing for those who needed more rest, especially the bowlers who have massive workload during Test matches.”For us, I feel it’s more of a positive thing than a hindrance that we didn’t have practice a day before the game because we are in a good zone. Everyone is playing good cricket and everyone is bowling well. So we feel absolutely comfortable going into the Test match even though we didn’t practice today.”Kohli assured there was to be no complacency when he insisted India were not going to make wholesale changes to the XI now that the series has been secured. “We have to understand that to play consistent cricket, you need to make sure that people are playing on a regular basis,” he said. “Those who are preforming and those who are doing well should continue in more games than not. To be a consistent side, I think we need to have continuity as well, unless the situations where things are not controllable arise.”So we certainly don’t want to take anything lightly. We want to play the same kind of cricket that we have, and hopefully, retain the team that played the last game as much as we can. So we are certainly not thinking of too many changes at all, especially in this format because you don’t want to start taking things for granted and lose that momentum. We certainly are not thinking of drastic chances at this stage.”Kohli said thinking of a first away whitewash was a distraction they could do well without. It is just another Test match for them, Kohli said. And, as they do with every other Test, they want to win. Yet, there is a bit of a stamp of a 2-0 lead in the preparation for it.

The new Aaron Mooy: Rodgers has struck gold on "tenacious" Celtic sensation

After a very rare defeat last Sunday, can Celtic get their pursuit of yet another treble back on track?

Last time out, the Hoops were beaten by the side bottom of the Scottish Premiership for the first time in two decades, defeated 1-0 by struggling St Johnstone at McDiarmid Park.

Brendan Rodgers

This actually means Brendan Rodgers’ side have lost three of their last six Premiership fixtures, having only endured two defeats across their previous 46 league outings.

Nevertheless, this’ll merely delay the party, and a record-equalling 55th Scottish top-flight title could be secured as soon as this weekend, if Celtic are able to beat Kilmarnock in Saturday’s early kick, and then Rangers are beaten at Aberdeen 24 hours later.

Plenty of players are getting the plaudits for the Bhoys’ continued monopolisation of Scottish silverware, but one unsung hero is going under the radar, reminiscent of a fans’ favourite of yesteryear.

Aaron Mooy's Celtic career

Aaron Mooy only made 42 appearances for Celtic during one season in Glasgow, but he certainly left a lasting impression.

Former Celtic midfielder Aaron Mooy.

He arrived in July 2022, reuniting with Ange Postecoglou, who’d previously been his manager with the Socceroos, although there were question marks about this move, considering the Australian had made just 31 appearances during his two-year spell with Shanghai Port; Chinese football massively affected by the Covid-19 outbreak.

Eric Knott of Read Celtic described the signing as ‘underwhelming’, adding that the move ‘might not work out’, while Sean Martin of the Celtic Way did not believe the signing made sense.

On the contrary, Mooy proved to be an extremely useful addition, registering seven goals and 11 assists, that’s a goal involvement every 110 minutes on average.

Postecoglou stated there is “no doubting” Mooy’s quality but, after the manager departed for Tottenham, the midfielder announced his retirement from football, news incoming boss Rodgers said he was “disappointed” to learn, although this was “something we absolutely respect”.

Former Celtic midfielder Aaron Mooy.

So now, is a current Celtic midfielder having a similar impact, albeit a player they’ll hope to have around for longer than one season?

Celtic could now be brewing the next Mooy

After Hibernian had made four unsuccessful bids to sign him last summer, Celtic ultimately snapped up Dundee midfielder Luke McCowan on deadline day, paying £1m plus add-ons for his services.

Given that the Hoops had also just signed Arne Engles for a club-record fee, with Callum McGregor, Reo Hatate and Paulo Bernardo already in the squad, many questioned how much the 27-year-old would actually play.

Well, so far, this has been money well spent, with McCowan scoring six goals and accumulating seven assists in hoops, currently ranked joint-14th in this season’s Premiership for goal involvements.

His manager Rodgers labelled McCowan as “fantastic”, adding that he has been “absolutely first class”, while Michael Shearer of the Celts Are Here praised his ‘outstanding performances’.

So, let’s see how his statistics compare to Mooy’s from a couple of seasons ago.

In a near-identical number of minutes so far, McCowan – who writer Kai Watson lauded as “tenacious” – comes out on top when compares to Mooy for the vast majority of metrics.

The current Celtic star has registered more goals and assists this season, while also racking up higher numbers when it comes to shots and touches as well as defensive metrics such as duels won and ball recoveries.

Mooy did create one more chance and register a slightly higher passing accuracy, there’s still time for McCowan to change that of course, but all of this proves that the 27-year-old was an absolute bargain at only £1m.

Tim Robinson: 'I love hitting sixes…it's addictive'

The Wellington batted admitted he was still coming to terms with his first international call-up

Andrew McGlashan03-Apr-2024

Tim Robinson, the newest member of New Zealand’s T20I squad, has a pretty simple outlook when it comes to the format. “I love hitting sixes,” he said, something that started in the backyard as a kid and has now carried him to the brink of an international debut against Pakistan.Robinson only has 20 domestic T20 matches under his belt but, until injury struck, was putting together an impressive Super Smash earlier this year. In the opening match of the season against Otago he plundered 139 off 64 balls with 10 sixes, the second-highest score in the tournament’s history, and later on struck 86 off 56 against Canterbury before his tournament was cut short.Still, it was enough to leave him on the radar of the selectors and, with nine players unavailable for the Pakistan trip due to the IPL, along with Will Young (county) and Tim Latham (paternity) not considered, Robinson was one of those to benefit. But the call from selector Sam Wells was still a lot to take in.”I was actually stuttering away trying to hold a conversation, but I was struggling a little bit,” he told reporters. “I couldn’t believe it and to be honest it hasn’t quite sunk in yet. It’s hard to put those kinds of things into words. Something I’ve dreamed off since I was a kid, trying to hit sixes in the back yard but for it to all come to fruition is pretty amazing and just really excited.”I love hitting sixes and trying to entertain people and to be honest it’s addictive when you get one out of the middle and it goes a mile. I took a lot of confidence out of that [century] but this is a completely different challenge and I’m excited to get over there and have a real crack.”Robinson added he would be going into the tour “with an open mind” and was thrilled that the trip would be led by his Wellington team-mate Michael Bracewell.”He’s been a fantastic role model for me,” he said. “We help each other on and see who can hit the ball furthest. He’s a fantastic guy and fills me with comfort that I’m going over with him.”Bracewell himself reflected on a lengthy journey back from injury after suffering a ruptured achilles playing in the T20 Blast for Worcestershire last year. He returned to action in January during the Super Smash and last month claimed a career-best 8 for 41 in the Plunket Shield, two days before being told he would captain New Zealand.”It’s been a slow grind, a lot of days here at the Basin working hard on all the little things,” he said. “It probably feels fast for people who haven’t lived that journey but for me it’s been a bit of a slow grind.”It’s huge to firstly be picked again the another huge honour to be selected as captain. I had a golden sort of three days: got that eight-for at the Basin, a hole-in-one the next day and third thing was the call from Steady about the captaincy. Three days I’ll never forget.”It’s a little bit sweeter when you’ve had a bit of time on the sidelines to reflect and grow that hunger even more to be back out there.”The five matches in Pakistan will play a key part in firming up the small number of uncertain spots in New Zealand’s T20 World Cup squad and Bracewell, who offers middle-order power with the bat and his offspin, will be a strong contender but he wasn’t looking too far ahead.”There’s obviously some exciting things coming up throughout the rest of the year but the job at hand is taking on Pakistan in their own conditions,” he said. “That’s certainly what we’ll be focusing on. Obviously you have those thoughts of where you’d like to be but the only way you get to where you want to go is focusing on what’s in front of you.”

Asalanka and Madushanka put Sri Lanka on top before first ODI is rained out

Match abandoned Charith Asalanka’s dazzling century and Dilshan Madushanka’s double-wicket maiden had given Sri Lanka the advantage over Zimbabwe after 54 overs of cricket, but persistent evening rain in Colombo meant the first ODI ended without a result.Rain threatened through the afternoon, finally arriving four overs into the chase. At the time, Zimbabwe, chasing 274 for victory, were reeling at 12 for 2 after Madushanka’s new-ball spell had just removed Tinashe Kamunhukamwe and Craig Ervine for ducks. But Asalanka’s 95-ball 101 was the standout performance of the day, not only for his shot-making but also for the patience he showed. With batters regularly falling around him and no real partnerships taking shape, Asalanka had to adjust his tempo and rein in his aggressive instincts till he eventually felt the time had come.He was on 52 when the No. 8 Maheesh Theekshana joined him with 13 overs to go, and he built a partnership of 23 with Theekshana and 52 with Dushmantha Chameera by rotating the strike smartly and picking the right balls to attack. All four of Asalanka’s sixes came in that period, and he took Sri Lanka to a respectable 273 for 9.Dilshan Madushanka bowled two maiden overs, picking up two wickets in the second of those•Ishara S Kodikara/AFP via Getty Images

Before Asalanka stole the show, it was left-arm seamer Richard Ngarava and Zimbabwe’s spinners who impressed. Ngarava operated on that nagging off-stump channel and, with the new ball, accounted for Avishka Fernando for a duck and Sadeera Samarawickrama for 41.Offspinner Tapiwa Mufudza – the highest wicket-taker in Zimbabwe’s recent Pro50 tournament – found turn through the afternoon to finish his ten-over spell with none for 37 on ODI debut. Sikandar Raza got an arm ball to bowl Theekshana and also controlled the middle overs as he claimed 1 for 41. Raza’s direct hit to run Kusal Mendis out for 46 was also crucial in pegging Sri Lanka back on a surface that promised big runs at the start.Blessing Muzarabani produced a strong spell to finish with 2 for 62, using his height to hurry Sri Lanka’s lower-order batters and add the dots. Faraz Akram, on ODI debut too, was wayward with his medium-pace, but sent back fellow debutant Janith Liyanage (24) and Sahan Arachchige (11) against the run of play to ensure Sri Lanka never ran away with the game. With many of Zimbabwe’s bowlers struggling to cope with the conditions, Ryan Burl was used as a fill-in, but his 3.2 overs went for 32, with Asalanka pouncing on the opportunities at the death before being run-out in the last over looking to get back on strike. The second ODI will be played at the same venue on Monday.

PIF make approach to sign "unique" 23-goal star for Newcastle in cheap deal

Newcastle United are on a high after claiming the Carabao Cup and will look to build on their success this summer as Eddie Howe builds a legacy on Tyneside.

Newcastle look to secure Champions League slot ahead of summer window

While the dust has barely settled on a whirlwind cup win for Eddie Howe, the Magpies know they will be in the Europa Conference League at the very least next season after a famous Wembley triumph over Liverpool before the international break.

Enjoying a free weekend, Newcastle return to action against Brentford next Wednesday as their pursuit of a top four Premier League finish continues. Five English teams are likely to earn admittance to next season’s Champions League based on current trends, which may open up further leeway for a return to Europe’s premier competition in the North East.

Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe and Bruno Guimaraes celebrate after the match

In turn, the opportunity to compete against the best is bound to attract prospective recruits. According to reports, Fiorentina’s Moise Kean is on the Geordies’ wishlist as speculation over Alexander Isak’s future dominates headlines.

Callum Wilson could leave on a free transfer and may be joined by several experienced first-team stars to make way for new blood at St James’ Park.

Defensively, Liverpool’s Jarell Quansah is a target to replenish Newcastle’s backline and may be available in the summer to the tune of £30 million plus add-ons.

Refreshing a squad with several players coming to the end of their cycle is the priority for Howe, who now has a financially advantegeous deal in his sights ahead of the window opening for business.

Newcastle make contact over deal for Lille forward Jonathan David

Joining the pursuit of one of the hottest properties on the market, Newcastle have made contact with Lille star Jonathan David’s representatives over the possibility of a free transfer to St James’ Park this summer.

Liverpool, Manchester United, West Ham United, Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur are also in the mix for his signature, competing against suitors such as Barcelona, Atletico Madrid, Juventus and Inter Milan from further afield.

Better dribbler than Gordon: Newcastle now plotting to sign "crazy" winger

He’s free to leave his current club.

Labelled “unique” by Canada boss Jesse Marsch, David has registered 23 goals and ten assists in 41 appearances across all competitions this campaign. PIF have spent a considerable amount since taking over in the North East, but will hope they can pull off a masterstroke by landing a prolific soon-to-be free agent at no cost to bolster the ranks.

Showcasing his capacity to fit the brief of a modern centre-forward, the Brooklyn-born man has laid on 27 chances for his teammates in Ligue 1 – he is far more than just a goalscorer.

Like any high-profile star at a career crossroads, on-field minutes are likely to determine where he becomes most enthusiastic about heading to in the coming months. Now, the onus is on Newcastle to convince David he can become a regular under Howe.

ECB seek decision on private investment in Hundred by spring 2024

IPL franchises, private equity firms and sovereign wealth funds among bodies consulted for tournament’s future

Matt Roller05-Dec-2023The ECB have consulted with owners of IPL franchises, private equity firms and sovereign wealth funds on the prospect of investment in the Hundred, and want counties to reach a decision on its future in the early months of the 2024 season. The Hundred’s existing model features eight clubs which field both men’s and women’s teams and are owned entirely by the ECB. These clubs have been run by boards comprising county representatives and independent directors in the tournament’s first three seasons. But the ECB and counties have discussed the model extensively since the end of the 2023 season and are in the second phase of a three-part consultation period, in the hope of reaching a decision in April 2024. This would allow them time to implement changes for the 2025 edition of the tournament. As things stand, the ECB’s preferred option is to open the tournament up to private investors, seeing the Hundred as an opportunity to bring money into the English game. The specifics of the model remain up for discussion, with one possibility involving the addition of two new teams – most likely based in the south-west and north-east.The most likely outcomes both involve the ECB handing 50% equity stakes in Hundred teams – which would become franchises – to their primary host counties. Surrey, for example, would be given a 50% stake in Oval Invincibles, while MCC, who own Lord’s, would be provided a 50% stake in London Spirit.Guy Lavender and Bruce Carnegie-Brown, MCC’s chief executive and chair, told members in a meeting on Monday evening that the ECB has been speaking to a wide range of potential sources of capital including IPL franchise owners, private equity firms and sovereign wealth funds. That raises the prospect of investment in the Hundred from the Middle East, potentially from Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF) or the various state-owned funds in the United Arab Emirates. MCC also encouraged members to consider which potential investors they would feel comfortable with the club being in partnership with.Lavender told ESPNcricinfo in a statement: “The purpose of the Members’ informal meeting was to socialise some of the issues with the membership regarding the future direction of The Hundred, including developing thinking and engaging them with the information available at this time.Related

Lancashire chairman resists notion of county rebrand for Hundred teams

“At present, nothing has been proposed or decided and it is premature to land on any particular conclusions until the ECB consultation and decision-making process involving the whole game has been completed, as well as our own consultation with Members.”Discussions at ECB level have also raised the prospect of an 18-team ‘open pyramid’ structure which would see the addition of a second division of the Hundred with promotion and relegation. This model would also involve clubs being opened up to private investment, though appears to have lost some of its initial support.Another option discussed by the ECB and counties was to open the Hundred itself up to private investment, rather than the teams, following reports a year ago of a £400 million bid for a 75% stake from a British private investment firm. However, this is not among the preferred options as things stand.Despite extensive speculation over its future since Richard Gould and Richard Thompson took over as chief executive and chair at the ECB, the Hundred will continue in some form for at least five more years and is underpinned by Sky Sports’ broadcast deal with the governing body. There is also widespread agreement across the English game that salaries in the Hundred will need to increase if it is to attract the world’s best players. The Hundred’s top male earners in 2023 were paid around 15% less than their equivalents in the Indian-backed Major League Cricket, despite the Hundred lasting nine days longer.Andy Anson, Lancashire’s chair, proposed a change from the 100-ball format to T20 last week, but such a shift appears unlikely at this stage. Gould said earlier this year: “The format is not something that is on my agenda… it’s given us that point of difference. Everyone around the world, in the cricketing world, has heard of the Hundred.”The Hundred’s model is relatively unusual on a global scale and is most similar to Australia’s Big Bash League, where teams are run by state boards. That stands in contrast to most other major T20 leagues, such as the IPL, where teams were set up as franchises owned by private investors or their companies. It is understood that any change to the Hundred’s model would require a three-quarters majority amongst the 18 first-class counties and MCC, and proposals remain at a relatively early stage.
