Liverpool now leading race for "unpredictable" £10m forward who Slot loves

Liverpool are now leading the race to sign an “unpredictable” forward who Arne Slot is a big fan of, according to a report.

Reds eyeing Mohamed Salah replacements

Mohamed Salah remains in negotiations over a new contract, with his current deal set to expire at the end of the campaign, however L’Equipe journalist Loic Tanzi has now dropped a promising update on the Egyptian’s future.

The Paris Saint-Germain insider wrote: “Mohamed Salah to Paris can be done, but it likely won’t happen as Salah is likely to stay at Liverpool. He’s in talks over an extension,’”

Until a deal is done, however, the Reds will need to be savvy and make sure they have some suitable replacements lined up, just in case the nightmare scenario of Salah leaving in the summer comes to fruition.

Slot has been named as a big admirer of Real Madrid’s Brahim Diaz, who is now a target to replace Salah, while Borussia Dortmund’s Jamie Gittens and Brentford’s Bryan Mbeumo also remain on the shortlist.

According to a report from Africa Foot (via Sport Witness), Liverpool are now leading the race for Feyenoord’s Anis Hadj Moussa, who Slot is believed to be fascinated by. The 22-year-old’s performances this season have caught the eye of a number of European clubs, but the Reds are in pole position at the moment, lining up a deal that is more likely to take place in the summer.

Feyenoord'sAnisHadjMoussacelebrates scoring their third goal

Head of recruitment Barry Hunter is engaged in active talks with the forward’s agent, Mohamed Dahmane, and the plan is for the deal to be finalised for €12m (£10m) at the end of the season. However, that fee may increase depending on the Algerian’s performances in the second half of the campaign.

Exciting news for Liverpool

It is promising that Liverpool are in a good position to sign the winger this summer, particularly for a fee of just £10m, as he has put in some impressive performances in his debut season with Feyenoord.

The Paris-born attacker has six goals to his name in all competitions, picking up three goals and one assist in five Champions League games.

The former Vitesse man’s incredible dribbling ability was on show last season too, ranking in the 99th percentile for progressive carries per 90 over the past year, when compared to his positional peers.

Dutch legend Ruud Gullit has tipped Hadj Moussa for future success, while also indicating he has the versatility to play in multiple positions, saying: “Hadj Moussa is impressive, he remains clear-headed and creative when he moves forward with the ball. He is an unpredictable player, capable of surprising his opponents at any moment. He makes very good passes and can play on the right wing.

“He excels in every position, but above all, he is a player who dares.”

At just £10m, Hadj-Moussa could be a real bargain this summer, but there is every chance he will drive his price up over the next few months if he continues to perform at a similar level.

Sean Abbott shines as Lancashire do little to justify early top-of-the-table billing

The noise might be a reminder of continued development, but Lancashire fail to build an innings

Paul Edwards07-Apr-2023
Given that on Thursday morning no county in the land had gained any points at all, it seemed both true and barmy for a few pundits to describe this as a top-of-the-table match. The expectation lying behind such a statement, of course, was that both Lancashire and Surrey will be among those fighting it out in September when every point’s significance is clearer and the title is in the hazard. But the significance attached to this first game of the season explains why Lancashire’s steady, and then headlong, subsidence this afternoon and evening mattered so much. The home side’s decline from 43 without loss to 197 for eight might not lead to a Surrey victory. (Can Keaton Jennings’ top-order donate their wickets so carelessly a second time?) But it has allowed Surrey to gain a powerful psychological advantage over the home side, even if such an advantage has modest expression in points. So far, at least…So almost all of today’s cricket will have pleased the Peter May Boys, whose loyal support is purely vocal at Surrey’s away games; sadly, they do not cheer on their team from a fine encampment such as they have established at The Oval. However, there is so much building work taking place on the ground at the moment that the addition of a gazebo or two shouldn’t cause much of a fuss and surely something should be done to mark Sean Abbott’s day. That said, Lancashire’s problems were very often their own damn silly fault. Facing a seam-dominated attack that asked probing questions, they offered inadequate answers and no one was guiltier than the specialist batsmen. For example, in the fourth over after lunch, Luke Wells drove at a wideish ball from Abbott at edged a catch to Ollie Pope, who pouched a diving two-handed catch to his left with an athletic lack of fuss. An hour later, Josh Bohannon, having played with impressive composure for his 32 runs, slapped a full-length leg-spinner from Cam Steel straight to Abbott at shortish extra-cover. Steven Croft, so often the source of Lancashire’s common-sense recoveries made 11 before hooking Abbott straight to Kemar Roach at long leg.By now, Abbott might have reckoned that this was his day and that memories of his previous injury-plagued stint at The Oval in 2021, when he took two wickets and scored 40 runs in his only game, were fading. If so, he was quite correct. After tea, he would take two more wickets and another catch to wreck Lancastrian hopes that their tail-end resistance would match that of their opponents. One of the most vital wickets, though, was taken by Dan Worrall, whose short ball was inside-edged into his stumps by Dane Vilas. “Oh, it’s a drag-on!” said the excellent Paul Allott on commentary, thankfully referring to the mode of dismissal rather than any perception that Lancashire’s batsmen were now being threatened by Smaug in addition to the Surrey attack.Seven overs later Jordan Clark bowled Keaton Jennings off his pads for 76, although Ben Foakes’ determination to stand up to Clark may have cramped the Lancashire skipper. As though reacting to the loss of a batsman who had scored runs for fun in 2022, the home side lost three wickets for one run in seven balls and did disappear as though there were a few fantastic beasts in pursuit of them. And nothing was quite so out of kilter with that passage of play than what then resulted – a last hour’s cricket in which Colin de Grandhomme and Will Williams put on 36 more runs in 17 overs and gave the impression that batting was one of the simplest activities known to humankind.Surrey supporters will rightly point out that a similar mood had been achieved on Thursday evening and Friday morning by Steel, who drove Williams through the covers and picked him up over square-leg for a six before reaching his century with his 11th four, this time a neat clip off his legs. The batsman’s celebrations were effusive enough but they were matched beyond the boundary: every member of the Surrey squad applauded him from the away balcony and cheers were also heard from a particular enclave of supporters sitting in the pavilion. One warmed to all these reactions; Steel’s century had taken him 189 minutes, 152 balls – and months of winter work in the nets. This was his fourth first-class century but, rather more significantly, his first score above 50 since September 2018, when he played for Durham. He has already provided us with one of the moments of the season. The broader context of Surrey’s batting deserved an ovation, too. Three of their last five partnerships had put on at least 50 and none had yielded fewer than 37 runs. Having been 77 for four and having lost half their side for 164 they had scored another 278 runs, thus collecting four bonus points. The only sliver of grit in their caramel Freddo was the dismissal of Kemar Roach for 18 caught behind by Bell off the final ball of the 110th over. Luke Wood’s second wicket had thus given Lancashire a third bonus point but even that was a thin reward and things might look a damn sight worse for the home side come Sunday evening.

Imagine him & Mowbray: West Brom must sign "extraordinary" Maja replacement

West Bromwich Albion supporters would have been feeling restless, when you consider the club’s inactivity in the transfer market would have worried fans, alongside the fact a successor to Carlos Corberan still hadn’t been found.

Sunderland manager Tony Mowbray.

They have now found their desired man in Tony Mowbray however, who is back at the helm on a two and a half year contract, having previously been at the helm of the West Midlands club towards the beginning of his managerial career.

He will now will have to deal without Josh Maja’s expertise for a little while, unfortunately, as he navigates his return to management.

Josh Maja's injury setback

Star-man Maja now finds himself sidelined for a number of weeks with a leg injury which will require surgery, as was confirmed by West Brom’s official club website.

That is a big blow for West Brom moving forward, considering the attacker was in the form of his life for the promotion hopefuls before this unwanted setback occurred, with the ex-Sunderland striker powering home 12 league strikes from 26 appearances.

Now, the Baggies really lack a focal point up top, with Karlan Grant ranking as his team’s second top scorer this season in the league with an inferior six, whilst the only fit out-and-out striker at the club now is Devante Cole who has just 109 minutes of action next to his name in the Championship for 2024/25.

Therefore, a major priority for Mowbray now will be to bring in a game-changing attacker to soften the immense blow of Maja being sidelined, and he could well have an exact name in his head already that can come in and make an almighty difference.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

The Maja replacement West Brom should look at signing

The player in question here is Ben Brereton Diaz who really shone under Mowbray’s guidance when the pair were together at Blackburn Rovers.

With the Chilean subject of interest from fellow Championship outfit Sheffield United, it could well be a smart swoop on the end of the Baggies to test Southampton’s resolve with a loan bid of their own. Ineed, the ex-Blackburn number 22 would surely be delighted at the prospect of reconnecting with his old manager.

As can be seen, Mowbray ended up getting the very best out of the Saints flop by the time he bowed out from the Riversiders, with his final campaign at the helm seeing Brereton Diaz fire home a blistering 22 strikes in the league from 37 contests.

The veteran manager’s patience paid off in the end after he had once labelled the 25-year-old as “extraordinary” even when the goals weren’t regularly flowing. Now, Mowbray’s familiar arm around the shoulder could perhaps reawaken a beast if Brereton Diaz was to don a West Brom strip shortly.

West Brom fans will be glad this saga involving a manager has now come to an emotional end, but with Mowbray re-entering followed by the added firepower of Brereton Diaz also potentially joining, the long wait would have felt worthwhile.

Forget Delap: Chelsea battling for PL star with "similarities" to Drogba

da bet sport: Chelsea have scored 45 goals so far this season, averaging 16.1 shots per game and averaging 57.7% possession – thus ranking fourth in the division in all of those metrics. However, the Blues have only scored eight goals in their last seven Premier League games, with Nicolas Jackson not scoring a single goal in that time.

da dobrowin: Jackson has made 23 appearances under Enzo Maresca so far this season, scoring nine goals, providing five assists and totalling 1,726 minutes played.

However, with all nine of those goals coming in the first 16 games of the Premier League, Chelsea have struggled in recent weeks to stick the ball in the back of the net, not being able to turn to a natural second striker option.

Christopher Nkunku has been used as the backup striker to Jackson this season, but this clearly isn’t his natural position, which has seen the Blues’ performance levels drop whenever the Frenchman joins the action as the centre-forward. Therefore, could Chelsea look to address these issues in the final few days of the January transfer window?

Chelsea's search for a striker

According to reports from The Guardian, Chelsea have joined the race for Brighton striker, Evan Ferguson, who could leave the club on loan or on a permanent deal this month.

Transfer Focus

The 20-year-old has also been subject to interest from West Ham, Arsenal, Bayer Leverkusen, Bournemouth, Everton and Tottenham.

The reports state a fee of around £40m could be enough to secure the young striker, but it is unclear whether Chelsea are interested in a loan or permanent deal. Paul Winstanley, who was previously working at Brighton and is now Chelsea’s co-sporting director, could play a big part in this deal in the final days of the window.

Brighton & Hove Albion'sEvanFergusonscores their second goal

Ferguson has made 14 appearances for Brighton this season, scoring one goal and totalling 373 minutes played, struggling for consistent minutes under Fabian Hurzeler so far this season.

How Ferguson compares to Liam Delap

Another striker who has been heavily linked with a move to Chelsea – and is also playing in the Premier League already – is Ipswich Town’s Liam Delap. The 21-year-old has made 23 appearances so far this season, scoring eight goals, providing two assists and totalling 1,705 minutes played.

When comparing Ferguson’s break-through season metrics with those of Delap and Jackson, you can see the Republic of Ireland international has a high level of clinical finishing, scoring 0.67 goals per 90, overperforming his xG (0.50 per 90) and averaging a 0.22 goals/shot ratio per 90.

Ferguson has been compared to Chelsea legend, Didier Drogba in certain aspects of his game, with journalist Pete O’Rourke stating he has “similarities” to the Ivorian, in terms of a player who can lead the front line on his own, and be a good finisher.

With Drogba having netted 164 goals in 381 games across two spells for the club, that comparison certainly bodes well.

Whilst many links have placed Delap as Chelsea’s number one target, the fact he is likely unavailable until the summer could force their hands to make a move for Ferguson this month, in order to strengthen the squad for the second half of the upcoming campaign.

Man City submit £41m+ bid to sign "monster" who is faster than Haaland

Manchester City are now closing in on signing a rapid new star for Pep Guardiola, with the club having tabled a £41m+ bid to land their man this winter.

Manchester City struggling

For the first time since Pep Guardiola’s arrival at the club, reigning Premier League champions Manchester City are in a serious rut of form.

They have recorded successive wins in their last two Premier League outings (Against West Ham and Leicester City), but prior to that had won just one of their previous 13 games across all competitions, including losses that put them out of the Carabao Cup, left them teetering on the edge of Champions League qualification and 12 points off the pace in the Premier League having played a game more than frontrunners Liverpool.

Man City in advanced talks with £50m ace who's open to January Etihad move

Pep Guardiola will be hoping Man City are closing in on their first signing of the January transfer window.

By
Brett Worthington

Jan 9, 2025

The unprecedented run appears to have stabilised somewhat in recent weeks, but the Cityzens are still expected to be active in the January transfer window to bolster their ranks and inject fresh energy into their squad, which has looked exhausted for much of the season to date.

Rodri’s knee injury has seen them target a midfielder, with the likes of Martin Zubimendi, Douglas Luiz and Nicolo Rovella all having been linked as the Etihad outfit look to bolster their options in the middle of the park. Now though, Guardiola’s side could be closing in on a signing who would provide welcome support in another area of the pitch.

Man City submit bid for defender

That comes as Sky Reporter Patrick Berger has revealed that the Cityzens are “on the verge” of signing RC Lens centre-back Abdukodir Khusanov this January. City have “submitted an official bid” worth “€50m including bonuses” [£41.6m] to sign the 20-year-old defender, with the player himself keen to make the move to Manchester in the coming weeks.

Indeed, Guardiola’s side have even gone as far as to offer him a “long term” contract already, suggesting that a deal is almost complete. Signed by Lens just 18 months ago, the centre-back has risen to prominence quickly in France, with teammate Brice Samba dubbing him a “monster” of a player earlier in the campaign.

Though football analysts disagree over his potential readiness for Premier League action immediately, one thing that no-one can deny is his sheer speed. The Uzbek defender clocked a top speed of 37km/h earlier in the season as he ran back to stop a counter attack.

This makes him even faster than Man City speedster Erling Haaland, who was clocked earlier in the campaign with a top speed of 35.7km/h, while he is not far off the Premier League record speed of 37.38 km/h set by Tottenham defender Micky van de Ven last campaign.

With Manchester City looking leggy this season, he will certainly provide energy and recovery pace to Guardiola’s backline, something that they have been sorely missing as a result of Kyle Walker’s rapid decline in recent months. Have the Blues just found their next stalwart in defence?

Liverpool must rue selling "monster" striker who’s outscoring Jota & Nunez

da imperador bet: Sitting pretty at the top of the Premier League, alongside now officially being in the EFL Cup final after breezing past Tottenham Hotspur at Anfield, Liverpool were very much loving life under Arne Slot’s expert guidance.

da heads bet: That was until they arrived in Plymouth, seeking to make it into the fifth round of the FA Cup. Like most games this term, this should not have been an arduous task for the Reds but they were on the end of one of the biggest shocks in the competition’s recent history, losing 1-0.

The ex-Feyenoord manager might well feel aggrieved by the lacklustre performances of some

attackers in recent games, notably against Argyle. Mohamed Salah has been in red hot form this term, as too has Cody Gakpo but the likes of Darwin Nunez – who continues to fire blanks – and Diogo Jota were not able to get their team across the line on Sunday.

The numbers behind Liverpool's attack this season

Whilst Salah is way out in front as Liverpool’s top scorer this season with an unbelievable 26 strikes from 34 games, other forwards at Slot’s disposal haven’t always been so clinical.

Indeed, the aforementioned Uruguayan is still struggling when given chances to impress, with a poor return of four strikes from 18 Premier League games worrying those at Anfield.

Darwin Nunez celebrates for Liverpool

He won the decisive penalty in the EFL Cup to gift Liverpool a 2-0 lead over Spurs, but he still wouldn’t bury a chance even when Ange Postecoglou’s men were all at sea, as three chances in the open contest went begging.

Jota is another figure up top that has fallen victim to wasteful finishing too, with the ex-Wolverhampton Wanderers ace only managing a weak return of two goals from his last five Premier League encounters, away from an unmemorable cameo against Spurs.

With some recent transfer rumours even seeming to indicate that Jota could be off this approaching summer, Liverpool must lament letting go of a sharpshooter when they did who has since blossomed into a sublime top-flight striker.

The former Liverpool striker who's now outscoring Jota & Nunez

Liverpool have been prone to a transfer blunder in the past when it comes to strikers flopping, with the likes of Christian Benteke and Iago Aspas sticking out from yesteryear, away from Nunez’s current woes.

Dominic Solanke arguably falls into this dud category, considering the Reds must have purchased the young forward back in 2017 hopeful that the former Chelsea youngster would immediately explode into life in his new surroundings as a raw and exciting talent.

Unfortunately for Solanke, the move just wouldn’t work out for him, with a justification for his poor performances at Anfield coming from the fact he had barely played senior football by this stage of his fledging career, away from a loan stint at Vitesse.

Liverpool didn’t possess the patience at the time to stick with him, with the now three-time England senior international only managing to pick up a dire one goal and one assist from 27 pitiful displays.

He didn’t let this setback completely demoralise him, however, with his next move away from the Reds in AFC Bournemouth putting him on a path to stardom, which has led to him scoring sumptuous strikes like the one above on a regular basis with Spurs.

At the Cherries, Solanke would definitely find the goalscoring groove that was lacking throughout his torrid time in a Liverpool shirt, with a bumper 77 strikes coming his way from 216 contests.

Off the back of these goalscoring heroics on the South Coast, Postecoglou’s side would cough up a weighty £65m to win the deadly 27-year-old’s services last summer, with that spending spree now viewed as a worthwhile splurge when glancing at the table above.

Across his debut season in North London to date, Solanke is outscoring both Nunez and Jota with 11 strikes next to his name from 29 games, with this sterling output seeing him live up to his previous tag as a “monster” by football journalist George Sessions.

Tottenham striker Dominic Solanke

Both Nunez and Jota can only boast six goals and eight goals apiece, in contrast, as Liverpool are just left to wonder now what could have happened if they had persevered with the 6 foot 2 striker instead of prematurely ditching him.

Postecoglou’s extensive absentee list has been a point of serious debate, with a plethora of key first-team players consistently unavailable since mid-November, in what is considered one of the worst injury crises we’ve witnessed in recent campaigns.

Guglielmo Vicario, Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero – the backbone of Spurs’ team – have been out for long periods alongside a host of other pivotal players. This has undoubtedly crippled the Lilywhites, but critics make a stern case that results simply need to be better regardless.

Postecoglou now faces a mammoth test at home to Man United, and another crucial 90 minutes when it comes to determining his long-term suitability for the Spurs dugout.

“The pressure will only get more intense, and I think that’s when he’ll be sacked, if players come back from injuries and there isn’t an immediate turnaround in form. That’s what they’re expecting and hoping for – players to come back and results to improve,” said former Tottenham scout Mick Brown this week (Football Insider).

“If it doesn’t happen, the blame will be placed on the manager. They’ve put so much emphasis on these injured players, so they’re willing to stick with him until he gets them back into the team.

“But if they come back and things don’t go well, it doesn’t bode well for Postecoglou’s position.”

Thomas Frank ready to leave Brentford as Tottenham target him

According to TEAMtalk, Postecoglou’s potential sacking is edging “closer” after their torrid cup results, and Brentford manager Thomas Frank is one of the options they’re considering as his potential replacement – should they decide to pull the plug.

Previous reports indicate that Frank is one of Spurs’ top managerial targets if Postecoglou leaves, and this is echoed again by TEAMtalk, who also share the Dane’s stance on leaving his current club this year.

The outlet reports that Frank is ready to leave Brentford for his next challenge at the end of the season, so if chairman Daniel Levy opts not to continue with Spurs’ current head coach, they could have an opportunity to tempt the former with a move to north London.

The 51-year-old, who’s done an impressive job at Brentford on a shoe-string budget, is highly regarded by those within Spurs – and he’s apparently an option they looked at to replace Antonio Conte before they decided to hire Postecoglou.

Called a “class act” by members of the media, Frank is certainly a solid candidate for the potential vacant role.
