Forget about Mourinho: West Ham could hire "genius" Lopetegui upgrade

West Ham United are tail-spinning out of control.

A point was picked up against Everton on Saturday, but the lifeless and uninspiring fabric of Julen Lopetegui’s squad is leaving everything to be desired.

The Hammers fanbase, understandably, wants for more. And as The Athletic’s Roshane Thomas says: “I don’t think Lopetegui is capable of turning this around. He was the wrong appointment.”

So, should he be given the boot?

West Ham considering Lopetegui dismissal

West Ham’s Spanish head coach, who replaced David Moyes in the summer, continues to bang the drum that judgment should be reserved until the end of the campaign. But Hammers fans will not wait that long, not if an upswing does not occur post-haste.

The east London outfit’s majority shareholder David Sullivan and the technical director Tim Steidten are set to meet during the domestic pause this week to discuss Lopetegui’s shortcomings, but it’s unlikely that he will be dismissed. Yet.

It’s looking increasingly unlikely that the 58-year-old will pick himself up from the wayside. And though he’s not going to be sacked just yet, the rumours are abound.

Indeed, Fenerbahce manager Jose Mourinho is in the running, and wouldn’t that be quite the appointment? As per transfer insider Graeme Bailey, the legendary Portuguese boss is interested in returning to the Premier League and is on West Ham’s radar, among others in the division.

Mourinho only alighted in Turkey this summer but launched a tirade on the standard of the Turkish Super Lig last month, and this could be a deal to keep an eye on.

However, Mourinho’s pragmatic tactics may not give the Hammers the turnaround they so desire. Instead, jobless Graham Potter may prove to be the far better pick.

Manager Focus

Who are the greatest coaches in the land? Football FanCast's Manager Focus series aims to reveal all.

Graham Potter would be the perfect appointment

Potter has been out of work since being dismissed by Chelsea in April 2023, just six months into his tenure with the Blues.

Even so, he’s built an impressive managerial career and after such remarkable feats with Brighton & Hove Albion, could now revivify his career at the London Stadium.

According to a report from Caught Offside last week, Potter has been lined up by West Ham bosses to replace Lopetegui, and his name is likely to be mentioned in some capacity during the proposed meeting this week.

Potter has been described as “a genius” by journalist Sam Morton and indeed is one of the sharpest tactical minds in English football. His failed stint at Stamford Bridge must not taint the remarkable work that was done at Brighton and, to a lesser extent, Swansea City.

In his final campaign with Brighton, 2021/22, he took the Seagulls to a ninth-placed finish in the Premier League, which was the highest in their history at the time.

This West Ham squad, with the likes of Lucas Paqueta at its heart, cries out for more control and fluency, something that perhaps was anticipated when Lopetegui took over. But it hasn’t been the case, with United 15th this term (45.5% average).

Potter has previously been particularly possession-focused, with his Brighton side averaging 54.3% of the ball in the Premier League during 2021/22, the fourth-best tally in the division and greater than the Hammers’ 47.4% average throughout the same year.

Change might be afoot in east London once again soon, and the Englishman would be the perfect choice to replace the current boss, who simply hasn’t fused with this iron-strong squad.

Rangers and Koppen now leading race to sign £3m player in January

Glasgow Rangers and new technical director Nils Koppen are now leading the race to sign a £3 million “ruthless” player in January, according to a new report.

The Scottish giants returned to action on Saturday afternoon, but it wasn’t a game to remember fondly for supporters as they were held to a 1-1 draw at home by Dundee United.

3 passes, 0 duels won: Clement must now ditch Rangers' 8-touch liability

Rangers dropped more Premiership points on Saturday afternoon

1 ByRoss Kilvington Nov 23, 2024 Pressure mounts on Philippe Clement at Rangers

The draw against Dundee United means it is just two wins from their last five games in all competitions for the Gers. That draw, plus Celtic’s 4-1 smashing of Hearts, now means that Philippe Clement’s side are 11 points adrift of the Hoops after 12 games and eight behind second-place Aberdeen.

That result is going to see Clement, who is already under pressure to deliver, under even more pressure, as Rangers look to end Celtic’s dominance in the league. Clement believes now is the time the club needs to raise their levels and states losing 13 points already “is not acceptable.”

Clement said: “We don’t need to speak about titles now; we need to speak about raising our level because we don’t have control over how many points other teams take. It’s totally not acceptable to lose that many points [13 so far this season]. We all know, I know, the players know, so there’s hard work to be done to make that better the next couple of months.

“Frustration about losing points in a game where you have much more chances than the opponent, much more possession also. But also frustration about our first half and the performance there. That was not good enough, with not enough quality in the final third, not enough initiative there, and not enough availability also for some players.

“I’m much more pleased about the second half because in the second half, we see the football that I want to see and that we produced in the past, that we can do, but we need to get that kind of performance 90 minutes long, and then you win all these kind of games – what we did in the past.”

Rangers and Koppen now leading race to sign £3m player in January

Ahead of the January transfer window opening, Rangers and Koppen are leading the race to sign Lawrence Shankland from Hearts, according to Football Insider. The 29-year-old has been with the Jambos since July 2022, and he has been a key player for the side, scoring 20 or more goals twice in two recent campaigns.

Lawrence Shankland on international duty with Scotland.

The Scotsman, who has been described as “ruthless” by Chris Sutton, hasn’t had quite the same luck in front of goal so far this season, as he’s just got one goal to his name in 14 league appearances and has so far yet to score a goal in the Europa Conference League.

This report states that Rangers are now in pole position to sign Shankland in January, as Hearts could look to cash in on the striker, as he will leave the club for nothing come the end of the season if a new contract isn’t agreed. Hearts have been keen to keep Shankland for the long-term, but a new deal doesn’t look to be any closer to being agreed.

Rangers are leading the race for his signature at the end of the season, but Hearts could see January as an opportunity to get some money for the forward, who Rangers wanted to sign for £3 million during the summer transfer window. A move in January is seen as a “win-win” for both, as Rangers bolster their attacking options and Hearts get money for a key individual. However, if a deal cannot be agreed upon, Rangers are expected to still be there come the summer, when he can be signed for a free transfer.

Stead hails 'pretty special' Phillips and power-packed middle order

Stead: ‘A nice luxury’ to have powerful middle-order options

Since the start of 2020, no middle-order batter (Nos. 4 to 7) has scored more runs in men’s T20Is than Glenn Phillips’ 746. And of the 16 middle-order batters who have scored 500 or more runs in this period, he has the second-best average (39.26) and the third-best strike rate (151.62).Phillips has scored three fifties in his last seven T20I innings, most recently on Friday when he made 76 off 41 balls to set up a crushing New Zealand win in their second T20I against West Indies in Kingston. New Zealand coach Gary Stead has been hugely impressed with Phillips’ contributions, not just with the bat but also his catching – he’s taken four catches in the first two T20Is – and speed across the outfield.Related

Stead was pleased with the way New Zealand’s batters have handled slow, turning conditions in Kingston.”The wickets have been interesting,” he said. “They look like they take a wee bit of turn, and they’ve sort of held a wee bit. The way our guys have come in and batted around usually one person in the innings has been great, and the thing that’s been pleasing that we’ve done is our match-ups have been very good and we’ve taken those on wholeheartedly.”

ILT20 – Pollard, Boult, Pooran, Bravo, Tahir among MI Emirates' 14 direct acquisitions

MI Emirates, the Mumbai Indians-owned team in the UAE’s ILT20, have announced their roster of non-UAE [overseas] players, headlined by old favourite Kieron Pollard, and Trent Boult, who opted out of a New Zealand central contract on Wednesday to spend more time with his family and focus on T20 franchise cricket. The league has allowed the six participating franchises to pick as “direct acquisitions” up to 14 overseas players for their line-ups – with up to nine allowed in the playing XIs. For MI Emirates, the 14 are Pollard, Dwayne Bravo, Nicholas Pooran and Andre Fletcher (from the West Indies); Boult (from New Zealand); Imran Tahir (from South Africa); Najibullah Zadran, Zahir Khan and Fazalhaq Farooqi (from Afghanistan); Samit Patel, Will Smeed and Jordan Thompson (from England); Brad Wheal (from Scotland); and Bas de Leede (from the Netherlands).Related

While Pollard has been a one-team man in the IPL, turning out for Mumbai Indians every season since starting out with them in 2010, Boult was traded to Mumbai Indians ahead of the 2020 season by Delhi Capitals and went on to play a starring role in their title run. Manchester United now want to sign £9k-p/w "technical maestro" for Amorim

da dobrowin: Manchester United have now joined the race to sign a star in the making who has already caught the attentions of Chelsea this year, with Ruben Amorim personally having recommended the signing.

Manchester United change transfer policy

da dobrowin: There has been significant change at Old Trafford since Sir Jim Ratcliffe took charge of the Premier League giants at the start of 2024. A whole new club hierarchy has been established, with Jason Wilcox and Dan Ashworth poached from Southampton and Newcastle United respectively to take charge of transfer policy, while Omar Berrada arrived from Manchester City to take up the CEO role.

The overhaul has also seen a change in the transfer policy itself, with the Red Devils now opting to sign younger players with higher potential rather than pre-established world-class stars, as they did under Erik ten Hag with the addition of Casemiro.

Though they signed five players for a combined £190m over the summer, only Noussair Mazraoui was over the age of 25, emphasising the shift in policy at the club.

Though the change is yet to bear fruit, there is a long-term belief that targeting younger players will be a more successful operating model for the club, summed up by Ratcliffe explaining in March that “I would rather sign the next Mbappé rather than spend a fortune buying success.”

Now, he could be set to throw his hat in the ring for a star at the other end of the pitch.

Amorim wants Manchester United to sign Portuguese talent

Reports from Spain claim that Ruben Amorim has personally recommended Manchester United join the race to sign Benfica talent Tomas Araujo.

The defender is well known to Premier League clubs; Crystal Palace saw a summer offer rejected for his services, while Fabrizio Romano has claimed that Chelsea are “in love” with the Portuguese defender, who they were willing to bid for in the summer only for Benfica to inform them that he wasn’t for sale.

“Chelsea were considering to bring in a new centre-back. For example, a player they are in love with is Tomas Araujo at Benfica.”

“They were considering a move for him, but then nothing happened because Benfica were not selling an important player a few days before the end of the transfer window.”

Now, the report claims that Manchester United have joined the race for his services, but he won’t come cheap, with the report adding that “any deal for Araújo is estimated to be in the region of €50m” (£41m).

This could yet be higher, with Araujo having a €100m (£83m) release clause in his £9k-a-week deal in Portugal, while Benfica are unlikely to sell midway through the season.

Tomas Araujo for Benfica.

With the futures of Harry Maguire, Jonny Evans and Victor Lindelof all unclear beyond this summer, United will likely be back in the market for another defender soon, and could do far worse than Araujo.

He was dubbed “potentially one of the best CBs” by football scouting account DanielScouting on X, who added: “He’s a technical maestro. His turns, dribbling, manipulation, & passing make you think he’s a CM,” and claimed he was already an “elite player”.

Able to play across the defence, he could be an excellent signing and a future superstar, but is more likely to be one for the summer.

Contact made: Arsenal can forget Gyokeres & Havertz by signing £63m star

There is no getting away from it; this season is starting to fall apart for Arsenal.

Mikel Arteta’s side came into the campaign with the ambition of finally winning the Premier League at the third time of asking, but after failing to win any of their previous four games in the competition, that goal is looking somewhat unrealistic.

The Gunners have been notably more porous at the back, as evidenced by the fact they’ve already conceded 41% of the goals they did last year, and their attack has been just as underwhelming as six teams are currently outscoring them.

In short, things aren’t looking great, but as we all know, the right players can make all the difference, and based on recent reports, the club could be set to land one of the most potent strikers in world football to challenge Kai Havertz, and no, it’s not Viktor Gyokeres.

Arsenal transfer news

According to a recent report from Turkish newspaper Sabah via the Daily Cannon, Arsenal have made contact with Napoli over the potential signing of striker Victor Osimhen.

The report claims that, alongside the Gunners, several clubs, including Chelsea, Newcastle United and Al Hilal, have all spoken to the Italian giants about the Nigerian’s availability next year.

While interest from so many top sides is far from ideal, the good news is that, according to the story, Fenerbahçe Sporting Director was quoted a price of €75m – £63m – by the Neapolitan’s own Sporting Director, Giovanni Manna, for the sensational forward, and that the Serie A side will sit at the table with the club that offers €25m upfront, which is about £21m.

Victor Osimhen

This transfer would still represent a significant investment from Arsenal, but given Osimhen’s form of late and the club’s need for a proven goalscorer, one well worth making, even if it’s bad news for Havertz and ends the chance of signing Gyokeres as well.

How Osimhen compares to Havertz

Okay, so before we get to why Osimhen would be an upgrade on the Gunners’ current starting striker, let’s look at one of the key reasons why he may well be a smarter signing than the other forward heavily touted for a move to the Emirates during the summer, Gyokeres.

Now, as the pair have both proven their goalscoring chops over the last few seasons, the Napoli ace’s main advantage over the Swede is experience.

Unlike the former Coventry City star, he has proven himself capable of playing in a top-five league, and not only that, but leading a sleeping giant to their first league title in decades – sound familiar?.

The Sporting CP star may well be able to do that as well, but until we have seen it, there will always be an element of doubt, doubt that does not hang over the Nigerian phenomenon.

With that said, how does the “world-class” marksman, as dubbed by José Mourinho, stack up to Havertz then? Unfortunately for the former Chelsea ace, it’s not a particularly close contest.

victor-osimhen-transfer-gossip-napoli-victor-osimhen-harry-kane-postecoglou

For example, from the start of the 22/23 campaign, the Serie A winner has scored 56 goals and provided 13 assists in just 80 club appearances, meaning he’s maintained an outrageous average of a goal involvement every 1.15 games.

In contrast, the North Londoners’ midfielder-turned-centre-forward has found the back of the net on 30 occasions and provided nine assists in 115 appearances, equating to an average of a goal involvement every 2.94 games.

Moreover, even if we look exclusively at the German’s 32 appearances as a striker for Arteta’s side, his tally of 13 goals and eight assists still comes out at a worse average of a goal involvement every 1.52 games.

Ultimately, if Arsenal want to win the league this season or the next, they are going to need to find a genuinely elite centre-forward to lead the line for them, and while Havertz has been a useful player for them and still could be in the future, he is notably less effective in front of goal than Osimhen is.

Therefore, Arteta and Co should do all they can to bring the Nigerian superstar to the Emirates in 2025 before someone else beats them.

Bigger talent than Duran: Aston Villa lining up £58m star who Monchi loves

Aston Villa maintained their position in the Champions League places in the Premier League with a 1-1 draw with Bournemouth at Villa Park on Saturday.

The Villans are fourth in the division, after nine matches, despite a late goal from Evanilson in stoppage time preventing them from picking up all three points against the Cherries.

Ross Barkley had given the hosts the lead with 14 minutes to go but the Brazilian produced a fine header in the 96th minute to beat Emi Martinez.

Unai Emery’s side are now 11 matches unbeaten in all competitions and, whilst the Spaniard will surely be pleased with that, he may still be disappointed that his team did not claim all three points on Saturday.

They could have secured the victory if super substitute Jhon Duran had pulled off his usual heroics, as the Colombia international missed a ‘big chance’ after coming off the bench.

Ollie Watkins cut the ball back for the striker and he caught the ball brilliantly but the curling effort fizzed past the outside of the post, rather than settling into the bottom corner.

Aston Villa could find an even bigger talent than Duran, though, when the January transfer window opens for business, amid reported interest in a Serie A starlet.

Aston Villa's interest in Serie A sensation

According to JuveLive, Aston Villa are interested in Juventus starlet Kenan Yildiz and are eyeing him up ahead of the next transfer window at the turn of the year.

The report claims that Juventus are preparing for January and that they could need to replace one of their players, as the Turkey international has garnered interest from across Europe in recent months.

It states that the most interested club in the young forward is the Villans, as sporting director Monchi would be ‘delighted’ to bring the forward to England ahead of the second half of the season.

JuveLive claims that Monchi is desperate to secure a deal for Yildiz and that he would be willing to do ‘crazy’ things to strike an agreement with the Italian giants, as it also reveals that Villa would have the money to do business with them if they get through to the next round of the Champions League.

The outlet reveals that the Old Lady would demand a fee of up to €70m (£58m) for the 19-year-old sensation, and adds that Villa would be willing to offer that amount of money ahead of any other interested club.

However, JuveLive reports that a deal is unlikely to be sanctioned by Juventus in the January transfer window and that it is more likely that a transfer would go ahead in the summer.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

Whilst it is not completely ruled out that Villa could swoop for Yildiz ahead of the upcoming window, they may have to wait until the end of the season to make their move.

If Monchi does get his wish and does ‘crazy’ things to bring the Turkish whiz to Villa Park, Emery could have an even bigger talent than Duran on his hands.

Jhon Duran's form for Aston Villa

The 20-year-old forward, who turns 21 in December, is an emerging star at Villa Park and looks to have a huge future ahead of him, at the club and in football in general.

Duran, who joined from Chicago Fire at the start of last year, has scored 15 goals in 62 appearances for the club in all competitions to date, including nine goals in 44 Premier League outings.

He has also scored two goals in 13 caps for Colombia at senior international level, which shows that the left-footed ace has proven his goalscoring quality at club and national level at a young age.

As you can see in the table above, Duran is yet to start a game in the Premier League this season but has still plundered four goals from 2.37 xG.

He has been a terrific super sub as a scorer, albeit his lack of creativity may be one of the reasons why Emery has opted against starting him regularly, and appears to be a fantastic prospect for the future.

Whilst Duran is clearly a big talent, given his return of four goals in the Premier League this season as a 20-year-old striker, Yildiz is an even bigger prospect.

Why Kenan Yildiz is a bigger talent than Jhon Duran

Firstly, the Turkish gem is 19 and does not turn 20 until next May, which means that he is around 18 months younger than the Aston Villa striker.

Despite being considerably younger than Duran, by senior measures, Yildiz has already emerged as a regular starter for Juventus in the Serie A.

Kenan Yildiz celebrates.

The teenage whiz, who is predominantly used as a second striker or a left winger, scored two goals in 27 appearances and nine starts as an 18-year-old in the Serie A last term.

Yildiz has also been capped 16 times by Turkey, which means he has been capped more than Duran at international level, and scored one goal for his country, to go along with four assists.

U23 scout Antonio Mango once hailed his “exceptional” technical qualities and they have been on show in the Italian top-flight for Juventus this season.

As you can see in the table above, the 19-year-old ace has been a regular starter in the Serie A for the Old Lady and contributed with four goal involvements in seven starts.

The versatile forward has also scored one goal in three starts in the Champions League, taking him into double figures for starts, which shows that Thiago Motta trusts him to start on the biggest stage.

Therefore, Monchi could land an even bigger talent than Duran as Yildiz is already starting games regularly and making an impact at the top end of the pitch for a European giant, whilst being younger than the Villa man – who is yet to displace Morgan Rogers or Ollie Watkins.
