Chelsea think £83m double deal from same club will fix Maresca’s defence

da blaze casino: Chelsea believe that an astonishing double deal could be just what they need to fix Enzo Maresca’s defence at Stamford Bridge, and are willing to pay a massive amount to get it done, according to a fresh report.

Question marks over Chelsea's defence

da marjack bet: Chelsea’s Premier League defeat to Liverpool at Anfield may have been just their second of the season, but it raised plenty of questions about their defence.

First-choice centre-back Wesley Fofana was serving a suspension, which saw Maresca field Tosin Adarabioyo alongside Levi Colwill, with Malo Gusto asked to play at left-back in Marc Cucurella’s absence.

Signed on a free transfer, Tosin did little to inspire confidence in him as he turned in a shaky performance, picking up a yellow card just six minutes in before being substituted after 53 minutes.

Neither Axel Disasi nor Benoit Badiashile have done much to stake a claim for a first-team spot either, which leaves Maresca still seeking truly world-class defenders at Stamford Bridge following the departure of Thiago Silva.

As a result, the Blues are expected to return to the transfer market to add more defenders to their ranks and have been strongly linked with a move to sign RB Leipzig defender Castello Lukeba, who they are believed to have been scouting.

Now, a fresh report has claimed that the west London side are eyeing up a mammoth double deal.

Chelsea to raid Benfica in £83m move

That is according to reports in Spain, who claim that Chelsea are in the process of preparing a €100m (£83.3m) offer to sign two Benfica defenders.

The pair in question are highly rated duo Antonio Silva and Tomas Araujo, with Chelsea having been strongly linked with the latter recently and even seeing a bid turned down for his services last summer.

It is claimed that Silva is also attracting attention from Arsenal and Manchester United, but that Chelsea are ready to invest heavily in the Portuguese international in order to get a deal done.

Araujo, meanwhile, would arrive as a player for the future as much as for the present, in a similar manner to Renato Veiga’s arrival last summer, with the club seeing the Benfica duo as “a key opportunity to rejuvenate and improve their defensive lineup” amid ongoing uncertainty.

The 22-year-old can play at both right-back and centre-back and has started five times in Portugal’s top flight this season, where has partnered with 20-year-old Silva. He could provide cover both on the right side of defence and for injury-prone pair Gusto and Reece James when required.

Their arrivals would be unlikely to happen until the summer at the earliest, with Benfica almost certainly keen not to lose their first-choice defensive pairing in January, while it would probably also require Chelsea to make some major sales to make room for the duo.

With their current crop of defenders all tied to long-term contracts (the earliest expiry being in 2028), that could be far more easily said than done, a fact that could prove a major obstacle for this audacious deal.

Rahul Dravid: India were 'exceptional' to restrict England 'on a good wicket'

Head coach impressed with the team for coming up with a short-ball strategy and sticking with it

ESPNcricinfo staff18-Jul-20225:51

Hardik Pandya: I try to stay one step ahead and outsmart the batter

Rahul Dravid, the India coach, heaped praise on his bowlers for setting up victory over England in the series deciding third ODI in Manchester. India, who bowled England out in each of the matches, restricted them to 259 on a “really good wicket” at Old Trafford and then chased it down with 7.5 overs to spare.”We were fantastic with the ball,” Dravid told the BCCI website. “It was exceptional the way we bowled. That was a really good wicket, and to be able to restrict a team like England to 260 [259], we did fantastically well. We picked up a few wickets upfront, then they built a partnership, but I thought our tactics and strategy was absolutely brilliant.”India made a conscious effort to bowl short or back of a length, extract bounce, and try to bring the bigger leg side boundary into play. Hardik Pandya, who picked up career-best figures of 4 for 24, bowled only one full delivery in his seven overs, as per ESPNcricinfo’s logs. He also bowled 15 short balls and 24 that were either on a length or short of a length.

Liam Livingstone and Jos Buttler were victims of this short-ball plan, both men falling in the same over to scupper England’s innings. It all started in the 35th over when Livingstone who was looking to counter-attack, played and missed two short deliveries before nailing a six behind square. Two balls later, he copped a blow on the helmet as Hardik struck to his short-ball plan.Hardik leaked a six in his next over too, the 37th, but kept hitting the pitch hard and was swiftly rewarded with not one but two quick wickets – Livingstone caught while trying to clear deep square leg and Buttler caught while trying to clear deep midwicket. England had slipped to 198 for 7.”At the back end, to bowl the short ball with fielders in place, really credit to the team and captain for working on some really good strategies,” Dravid said. “It really came out really well.”He was also particularly happy with India’s response to a top-order collapse. After the top three were nipped out inside 10 overs, India found saviours in Hardik and Rishabh Pant, whose century stand took the team all but the final few steps to victory.”The way Hardik and Rishabh responded was superb,” Dravid said. “It was really good to see that under pressure with the series on the line. To put in a partnership like that and bat like the way Rishabh and Hardik did was really heartening for us.”Hardik, who made a brisk 55-ball 71 to go with his four wickets, felt whatever could go his way did. He laid down the marker early on with the bat, counter-punching his way even as Pant played second fiddle. Hardik struck 10 boundaries in his knock but fell with India 55 away.”Today was one of those days where whatever I tried, whatever experience have gained, it came to effect,” Hardik said. “I got the most out of whatever opportunity I had. With the ball, it was important to stop runs since their start was fantastic. I was very happy with the ball, but the way I batted, I’m prouder of that because batting is always going to be close to my heart.”I genuinely felt I was in rhythm. Whatever I wanted to do, I was in control. I would’ve loved to finish the game, but the way Rishabh batted and finished the game, no complaints.”

No momento, no topo do Brasileirão.

Abel Ferreira é comparado a José Mourinho. Vejo claras similaridades, mas acho reducionista. No entanto, considero um elogio em um ponto em especial: a força mental nos jogos decisivos. Dois vencedores.

Man Utd keeping tabs on "impressive" hat-trick hero to succeed Fernandes

Setting their sights on solving a future problem, Manchester United are now reportedly keeping tabs on one star who could succeed Bruno Fernandes in the years to come.

Man Utd transfer news

Whilst the Red Devils can consider their summer transfer window a success story, it’s yet to really come together on the pitch for Erik ten Hag’s side. Whilst they brushed Barnsley aside 7-0 in the Carabao Cup in a game that saw their attacking options finally begin to show signs of goalscoring form, a routine but unconvincing win at Southampton which followed a humiliation at the hands of rivals Liverpool shows that there’s still work to be done.

Jose wanted Man Utd to sign £152m star in the making but got Lukaku instead

He is now considered one of the world’s best

Sir Jim Ratcliffe will be well aware of the need for patience, however, after only beginning to implement his vision for the club in the summer, ridding of any previous transfer strategy in the process which usually saw stars past their peak arrive for big money and on high wages.

Now, with the focus very much shifted towards players on course to become Europe’s top stars rather than those who have already had their time in the spotlight, the Red Devils have reportedly set their sights on an eventual Fernandes replacement.

According to Fussball News, Manchester United are keeping tabs on Oscar Gloukh, who has enjoyed an excellent start to the campaign with Red Bull Salzburg, even scoring a hat-trick in their 5-1 mauling of Blau-Weiss Linz in the Austrian Bundesliga.

Still just 20 years old, United reportedly see Gloukh as an option to eventually replace current captain Fernandes, who is 30 years old and, therefore, not someone who has a long-term future among Europe’s elite. And whilst the Portugal international’s post-football career is some way away yet, United would be wise to consider future options for a player of his calibre.

"Impressive" Gloukh should be heir to Fernandes' Man Utd role

Such is Fernandes’ talent, not many players around European football would be capable of taking his role at Manchester United, but Gloukh is certainly one of a select few. The Red Bull Salzburg star has got off to a fine start in the current campaign following a season to remember last time out in which he recorded numbers that match Fernandes’ at Old Trafford.

Earning significant praise thanks to his excellent rise to stardom at Salzburg, Football Talent Scout’s Jacek Kulig described Gloukh as “impressive” and a “jewel in Salzburg’s collection” last April. Now, he is a jewel that Manchester United could add to their side in 2025 in what would be yet another impressive signing by INEOS and new sporting director Dan Ashworth.

Everton can bin Dyche for "serial winner" who’d make Branthwaite a monster

Everton suffered a shocking start to the campaign, with four straight defeats to open the 2024/25 Premier League season, but Sean Dyche has found some respite in his side’s recent upswing in form.

Victory over Crystal Palace at Goodison Park was followed by successive draws against Leicester City and Newcastle United before the current international break, but there’s still plenty to do before the 16th-placed side steer safely away from the drop zone.

If the Toffees fall back into a struggling spell, it could have dire consequences for Dyche, who was skating on the thinnest of ice only a few weeks ago.

Why Sean Dyche could be sacked

Dyche might have lifted Everton out of the Premier League relegation zone but many supporters will feel that the short rise in form might just prove to be a stay of execution.

Everton manager Sean Dyche

Though the 53-year-old manager recently revealed that he has been unbothered by the din surrounding Goodison Park and his place at the helm, there has indeed been noise, with the Friedkin Group’s proposed takeover from Farhad Moshiri opening up further speculation that he will be replaced.

Who to bring in, though? Graham Potter and former boss David Moyes are both out of employment, but perhaps TFG would wish to delve down a different and more ambitious road, with Football Insider confirming that Fenerbahce manager Jose Mourinho has been linked with the job.

Jose Mourinho at Fenerbahce.

The former Chelsea, Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur gaffer is an infamous figure in English football – Moyes has hailed him as a “serial winner” in the past – and while it would seem unlikely that he’d be brought in, it’s certainly not out of the realm of possibility.

Friedkin will want to hit the ground running on Merseyside and ensure that Everton move away from the threat of relegation and then make headway in the Premier League, moving up to the upper end of the table.

Why Jose Mourinho could succeed at Everton

Mourinho replacing Dyche in the dugout at Goodison Park this season does seem like a far-fetched rumour, especially since he’s only been in a job at Fenerbahce since June of this year.

It’s been a decent start: Sarı Kanaryalar are fourth in the Turkish Super Lig but only two points off second-placed Samsunspor – albeit six points adrift from table-toppers Galatasaray, who have completed an imperious start to the campaign.

But wait. Might there actually be a grain of sense within this rumour? Everton could, frankly, spend the 2024/25 campaign battling against relegation, and systematically revamping the playing style might cause more harm than good.

AS Roma manager Jose Mourinho.

In Mourinho, Dyche’s “direct and defensive” system would be superseded by the more flexible approach that the ‘special one’ employs.

While Mourinho might have garnered something of a reputation for rigid, deep-sitting football, the truth is that he implements different variations of the same whole depending on the club and its situation – for example, his trophy-laden spells with Real Madrid and Porto were characterised by attacking, in-your-face styles.

But a more pragmatic approach is what would be needed on Merseyside, and after Everton found such success in protecting Jordan Pickford’s goal across the 2023/24 campaign, Mourinho might be the perfect option to take what Dyche has built and upgrade it, fashion it into something even more.

After all, with Mourinho pulling the strings, Jarrad Branthwaite might take the next step in his development and realise his world-class credentials.

Mourinho would make Jarrad Branthwaite a "monster"

Analyst Ben Mattinson hailed Branthwaite as a “beast” of a centre-half last season after he returned to Merseyside after a successful loan spell in the Netherlands with PSV Eindhoven, starting 35 Premier League matches and winning 68% of his duels, also averaging 4.5 clearances and 5.2 ball recoveries per match, as per Sofascore.

Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite

Broad-shouldered and imposing, the 22-year-old has an exciting future ahead of him and has already attracted interest from some of Europe’s heavyweights, with Manchester United failing with a series of official bids this summer.

Mourinho, who to this day boasts the Premier League record for fewest goals conceded in a season (15, with title-winning Chelsea in 2004/05), could turn Branthwaite into an “absolute monster”, a reputation that some analysts already believe he holds, such as talent scout Jacek Kulig.

There’s a distinguishable aggressiveness to Branthwaite’s game – although it’s not to a fault. As per FBref, he ranks inside the top 25% of recordable defensive metrics that the site presents, highlighting his robustness and energy.

It would go down a treat under Mourinho, who could refine and lift some of his more negative attributes – such as a lack of passing accuracy.

Branthwaite might not rank highly for pass completion and progressive passes, but then he’s performing in Dyche’s counter-attacking and deep-lying system and this precludes the kind of ball-playing success that other defenders are able to achieve, thus distorting the metrics.

Everton defender Jarrad Branthwaite

He’s technically proficient and this could be lifted even higher under Mourinho, whose defensive qualities might look to be the 61-year-old’s bread and butter from a tactical standpoint but does not negate the technical ability and intelligence of his tactical plans – after all, he’s one of the most decorated managers in history.

If the Friedkin Group are serious about turning Everton toward a new age, perhaps this is the managerial move to make. A statement of intent.

Rajitha and Fernando win first 50 minutes, Litton and Mushfiqur rule rest of the day

Both batters have scored unbeaten centuries, and added a record 253 for the sixth wicket after coming together at 24 for 5

Andrew Fidel Fernando23-May-2022Stumps In the first 50 minutes in Mirpur, Sri Lanka’s two seamers tore Bangladesh’s top order down, the scoreline reading 24 for 5 inside seven overs. But the recovery was just as epic. Mushfiqur Rahim – fresh from a hundred in Chattogram – progressed masterfully to a ninth Test century. Litton Das, more aggressive than his senior partner, strode to a hundred of his own. At stumps, the pair had put on 253 unbeaten runs together, and set Bangladesh on track for an imposing total.Bangladesh, who seemed to have suffered a series-defining collapse at the start of the day, had dug incredibly deep to finish the day perhaps the happier outfit. There was only one further recognised batter to come for them, but it was clear that the pitch was now flat, and that Sri Lanka’s spinners posed little threat.Despite their rollicking start, it was ultimately a day of toil for Sri Lanka’s attack. The scoring rate having increased through the day, Bangladesh were going at 3.25 an over by stumps. There was not a lot in the surface beyond the early overs, during which Kasun Rajitha claimed three wickets and Asitha Fernando two, but Sri Lanka’s spinners were nevertheless modest, and at times bowled too many short deliveries. For most of the day, Litton was more adventurous than Mushfiqur. Never was this more clear than when Sri Lanka’s seamers bowled bouncers at Litton just after lunch. He rarely shied away from using the pull shot, even with the leg trap set. Fernando should have had Litton caught for 47, when a top-edged pull floated out behind square on the leg side. But Kamindu Mendis – the substitute fielder – could not get his hands around the descending ball, having run back from backward square-leg. This was the only real chance either batter offered, though.Even from early in the innings, Litton was severe on errors of length, particularly when Sri Lanka’s bowlers pitched short. He punished Ramesh Mendis through the leg side twice in his first over, and continued to prosper in that region. Of his 16 boundaries, 13 came in the arc between fine leg and wide long-on. Thanks partly to Sri Lanka’s indiscretions, Litton raced through the 80s and 90s, to his second Test hundred; he collected three fours and five overthrows to move from 79 to 101 in the space of 13 balls. The runs continued to flow after he got to triple figures. Litton finished the day on 135 off 221.Mushfiqur’s innings was steadier. He rode his form through the early stages, hitting two fours off his first eight balls, before settling into a rhythm as the morning and afternoon sessions wore on. He was largely content to wait for the bad balls, which Sri Lanka’s spinners – in particular – delivered with some frequency. Mostly, they bowled too full to Mushfiqur, and he would step out to hit them through the off side, while picking up singles square on either side of the wicket in between.Kasun Rajitha struck on the second ball of the match, removing Mahmudul Hasan Joy, before picking up two more wickets•AFP/Getty ImagesWhere Litton had been intent to take on the short-pitched bowling Sri Lanka’s seamers bowled through the middle session, Mushfiqur was largely content to duck or weave. He got to his 27th half-century with a cover-driven four off Praveen Jayawickrama, off the 112th ball he faced, and continued to progress serenely after that, rarely missing out on the obvious scoring opportunities, but also slowing down when the opposition bowled well at him, as they did just before tea.The runs came quickly for him as well in the third session, Sri Lanka’s bowlers clearly having been worn down by the pair, and by the heat. About halfway through the session, Mushfiqur poked one square of the wicket on the off side and completed his century – his third against Sri Lanka, who going by the stats are his favourite opposition. The second new ball, taken after 81.3 overs, did not trouble either batter much.Despite their eventual toil, Sri Lanka’s quicks started brilliantly. Rajitha was the more impressive of the two bowlers, and had set the morning’s collapse in motion with the second ball of the match.Bowling from wide of the crease, he got the ball to straighten slightly off the pitch, and whizz between the bat and pad of Mahmudul Hasan Joy, whose off stump was flattened. Rajitha would also get two left-handers off successive balls with roughly this strategy, only from around the wicket. In the seventh over of the innings, he tempted Najmul Hossain Shanto into a big drive, and took down his off stump as well. Next ball, he angled one into the pads of Shakib Al Hasan, who played around it and was given out lbw – a decision that was upheld upon review.Fernando’s wickets, meanwhile, did not follow so close a pattern. He skidded one at Tamim Iqbal in the second over, and the batter sent a leading edge to point, where Jayawickrama took a good diving catch. Tamim had been looking to whip that ball to the leg side.Bangladesh’s struggling captain Mominul Haque was Fernando’s next victim. Poking at a length ball outside off, Mominul sent a thin edge to the wicketkeeper, and was out for nine. This was his sixth consecutive single-figure score, and the seventh in eight innings. In the end, Rajitha’s were the day’s only good figures – he finished with 3 for 43 from 19 overs. Fernando had 2 for 80 from 17 – his short-ball bursts having proved expensive, though he did create that chance off Litton. The spinners were a disappointment, but then the pitch had not yet begun to take any serious turn. Sri Lanka will hope that if Ramesh and Jayawickrama cannot be immediately penetrative on day two, that they will at least be economical.

Everton could make Beto unplayable by signing "explosive" EFL star

Everton have endured a difficult start to the 2024/25 campaign. The Toffees currently find themselves in 16th in the Premier League table, five points clear of 18th place Ipswich Town.

With that being said, they picked up another important point at the weekend, a 1-1 draw at home to Fulham, and are on a strong run. Sean Dyche’s side have not lost in five games, beating fellow relegation contenders Ipswich Town and Crystal Palace in that time, as well as drawing at home to Newcastle United and winning away to Leicester City.

With the season coming up to a crucial time, a busy Christmas period, the Toffees will hope to come out relatively unscathed. They may well look to recruit in the January transfer window to boost survival hopes and have been linked with one attacker who could add quality depth.

Everton target Championship winger

The player in question here is 21-year-old winger Tom Fellows. The West Brom attacker has impressed for the Baggies this term in the second tier of England and has now been linked with a move away from the club, with Everton believed to be one of the sides interested.

At least, that is according to a report from Alan Nixon. The journalist explains that the Toffees have sent a ‘delegation’ to watch the tricky winger, and are ‘in the market’ for reinforcements in attack.

However, any potential move for Fellows may well depend on funds. Nixon explained that Dyche’s side requires a ‘cash injection’ before they can start pursuing transfers, as they look to bolster their options ahead of a survival fight.

Why Fellows would be a good signing

It has been a wonderful start to the season for the England under-20 international. He has played 12 games in the Championship so far for West Brom, and although he is yet to find the back of the net, has five assists to his name, including two in one game against Stoke City. Across the top two tiers of English football, Bukayo Saka is the only player with more.

That in itself would immediately elevate the Toffees. They have struggled to create chances this season, ranking joint 12th in the Premier League with just 17 so far, as per Sofascore. They have just three players with assists to their name. Ashley Young and Dwight McNeil have three each, and Dominic Calvert-Lewin has one.

Indeed, the West Brom attacker would add great creativity and quality to what is a lacklustre Everton side in attacking areas. He has created five big chances in the Championship this season and averages 1.3 key passes per game, as per Sofascore.

The “explosive” star, as football talent scout Jacek Kulig described him, would be up against the likes of Jack Harrison and McNeil for a spot on the wing. Former Leeds man Harrison has struggled this term and is yet to register an assist in nine Premier League appearances. Fellows might well displace the attacker in the starting eleven, adding more creative influence.

The Baggies star could also then help bring Toffees striker Beto to life. The Guinea-Bissau international joined the club in 2023 for a fee of almost £30m from Italian side Udinese, but he has struggled to live up to the money so far.

This season for the Toffees first team, Beto has played seven games, scoring twice, including a late equaliser against Fulham last weekend. The Everton number 14 has played 44 times for the club, with seven goals and two assists to his name.

However, with Fellows in the side, Everton fans might well see an increase in Beto’s success in front of goal. The striker, who stands at 6 foot 4, has not exactly been on the receiving end of lots of chances, nor has he played many minutes.

The fact he has scored in the Premier League this season will surely be a real confidence booster. Combine that with the chances the West Brom man provides, as he has done all season long in the Championship, and Beto could hit new heights.

Tom Fellows celebrates for West Brom.

It could be an inspired signing from the Toffees, adding great creative influence to their side. Perhaps the addition of Fellows could be the difference between relegation and survival, as the fight to avoid the drop continues.
