He’s now worth more than Johnston: West Brom must rue ace leaving for £0

da dobrowin: West Bromwich Albion managed to add a cherry to the top of their cake right at the death of the transfer window, clinching a wonderful deal to win back former loan hero Mikey Johnston on a permanent basis on deadline day.

da wazamba: The now ex-Celtic winger would end up costing the Baggies a reasonable £3m, with Mason Holgate also joining on loan as the clock ticked down another eye-catching bit of business.

If he can reach the same heights he managed as a firm fan's favourite last season at the Hawthorns this campaign, Carlos Corberan's men could well be even more of a force to be reckoned with in the Championship, with the Baggies yet to taste defeat across their first four league clashes.

Johnston's time at West Brom

Johnston joined in January as a new loan recruit to help Corberan's side push to make the play-offs and stay there, with the Republic of Ireland international an instant hit in his fresh surroundings down the left flank.

The 25-year-old would twist and turn second-tier defences for fun, with a devastating finish usually finding the back of the net after a slaloming run forward, with Johnston helping himself to a stunning seven goals and two assists from 20 Baggies games.

Therefore, when an opportunity arose during the recently closed transfer window to try and snap Johnson back up, it was a chance West Brom couldn't say no to.

With Tom Fellows also operating as a creative machine down the right, with three assists already tallied up from his side's opening four Championship contests, both the homegrown West Brom menace and the £3m new boy could tear up the league together.

Mikey Johnston in action for Celtic in the Scottish Premiership

Away from the West Midlands outfit striking gold on deals in the here and now, they have been prone to making blunders in the transfer market too.

Sam Johnstone is one player who very much fits into that category.

Sam Johnstone's transfer value in 2024

Johnstone's recent £10m move to Wolverhampton Wanderers would have been particularly demoralising for West Brom, away from feeling overjoyed about Johnston's return, having waved goodbye to the new Wolves goalkeeper for nothing back in 2022.

Well known to keen football followers across the West Midlands – having lined up for Aston Villa as well as West Brom – Johnstone has now ticked off another big club from this area in the form of Gary O'Neil's Old Gold.

His best spell as a player to date arguably came at the Hawthorns, with Gary Lineker even labelling the former Manchester United youth prospect as "sensational" when he routinely starred for his former employers.

Proving himself to be a reliable shot-stopper across his playing days to date, with a large portion of his career clean sheets coming in the second tier, Corberan would love to be able to call upon Johnstone now in his current West Brom XI.

The Baggies wouldn't be consumed with so much regret when it comes to Johnstone if they did manage to sell him on for a hefty fee when they could, considering West Ham United in 2021 reportedly bid £10m for his services.

Instead of cashing in, however, West Brom pushed back a bid and ultimately rejected it, only for the four-time England international to walk away from the building on a free transfer, after his side finished in an unsatisfactory mid-table spot in the Championship at the end of the 2021-22 season.

Now, the ex-Red Devils youngster is worth £7m more than statement buy Johnston, as the Baggies remain a team in the second tier aiming for a top-flight return.

Corberan does have Alex Palmer at his disposal in-between the sticks now, who has only leaked two goals so far this campaign in the league, but those with connections to West Brom must still wonder if Johnstone's time with the club could have ended on a better note.

Internal talks: Arsenal weigh up £34m D-day signing as Sterling upgrade

Arsenal are poised to battle it out for the Premier League title once again, and while Riccardo Calafiori and Mikel Merino have been signed, the frontline needs some work before the day is done.

Emile Smith Rowe has joined Fulham while Eddie Nketiah is closing on a £30m transfer to Crystal Palace; Fabio Vieira has also re-joined Porto on loan. Mikel Arteta boasts one of the most talented teams in Europe, but surely some added depth is needed to fire across all cylinders over the coming campaign.

Arsenal transfer news

As per ESPN, Arsenal are holding internal talks over whether to strengthen their frontline before the transfer deadline this evening, with Chelsea's Raheem Sterling offered Arteta's way.

The England international, as Fabrizio Romano also reports, is at the core of late-stage discussions in north London to determine a possible transfer, but with Manchester United also interested, Arsenal are also weighing up an alternative option.

However, Bayern Munich winger Kingsley Coman is also an option and could be the perfect alternative, with the German giants hoping to collect a €40m (£34m) fee for the 28-year-old.

Why Arsenal should sign Kingsley Coman

Coman has led a storied career, draped in hordes of silverware, and while he has a lucrative offer from the Saudi Pro League, he might feel that he wishes to try his foot in the Premier League.

Bayern wish to get the versatile winger off the wage bill but that certainly does not mean that he is past his sell-by date, carrying athletic and creative properties that could see him thrive among Arteta's squad.

And while his injury record leaves something to be desired, Coman would not be expected to shoulder a hefty workload, for Leandro Trossard, Gabriel Martinelli, Bukayo Saka and co all compete for starring spots in the Gunners' starting team.

Sterling might be a decorated Premier League icon, but the 29-year-old has not been brilliant since transferring to Chelsea for £47.5m two years ago, scoring just 19 goals and adding 12 assists across 81 matches. It's not a bad haul but still a regression from his Manchester City days.

His underlying metrics are also not the best, with Coman outperforming him across a sweep of ball-playing and ball-carrying statistics, which suggests that Arteta's dynamic project might find better use of the Frenchman's qualities.

As the statistical analysis shows, Coman has outstripped Sterling across every aspect, highlighting the gains that could be found from adding him to the Arsenal accord.

His former coach Patrick Gonfalone has even said: “His reading of the game and his technique stand out and make him formidable." Such traits would go down a treat at the Emirates.

Arteta, having parted with several stars, will need to sign someone before the transfer window concludes, ensuring that the frontline is in a fitting condition to charge across multiple fronts this year.

Wanindu Hasaranga 'a superstar in the making' – Dasun Shanaka

Captain also points to success of Charith Asalanka and Pathum Nissanka with the bat

Deivarayan Muthu04-Nov-20212:12

Where do Sri Lanka go from here?

Sri Lanka captain Dasun Shanaka has hailed Wanindu Hasaranga as a future superstar after the legspin-bowling allrounder took 2 for 19 to help knock West Indies out of the T20 World Cup.Hasaranga removed both Kieron Pollard and Dwayne Bravo with fizzing wrong’uns, finishing with 16 wickets – a tournament record. Those 16 strikes included a hat-trick against South Africa in Sharjah, although his efforts weren’t enough to prolong Sri Lanka’s involvement in the tournament.”He’s a gem and he’s a superstar in the making,” Shanaka said at the post-match presentation. “You know he has just started off his career. We have a lot of cricket to be played and we have to protect him as well. As a captain, I’ve backed him at every situation from the start and he’s a real prospect for world cricket.”Watch cricket live on ESPN+

Sri Lanka have had other heroes as well in the tournament. Charith Asalanka and Pathum Nissanka, with 231 and 221 runs respectively, are currently the World Cup’s leading run-scorers. The two batters combined to add a 91-run second-wicket stand off 61 balls, which carried Sri Lanka to 189 for 3. Shanaka foresees a bright future for these two youngsters as well.”I knew they had potential a long time back,” Shanaka said. “They have worked damn hard for this and I think they’ve got a long career ahead of themselves and a lot of good cricket to come. I feel they have a special place in every team.”I think the team is going in the right direction at the moment and fans have been following us for a long time. They wanted victory, but they supported us throughout whether we lose or win. So, we should thank every fan over here and everywhere in the world.”Related

Sri Lanka knock out West Indies with sharp all-round display

Asalanka had played just three T20Is before this World Cup but has now made a name for himself with his muscle and timing at the top of the order.”Before this World Cup, I hadn’t played much T20 cricket,” Asalanka said. “But, I’ve just been asking senior players questions and I just want to keep getting better and better day by day. It feels great. Always glad to have a half-century and a match-winning knock for my country.”It has been a fairly long wait for Asalanka, though, to break into the big stage, having top-scored for Sri Lanka, with 276 runs in six innings in the 2016 Under-19 World Cup in Bangladesh.”I was waiting for five years and did a lot of hard work to come into the national side,” Asalanka said. “It has paid off and I just want to work hard till my career ends and want to win more matches for my country.”

Sunderland journalist reveals the thing Le Bris loves about Eliezer Mayenda

Journalist Phil Smith has revealed what Sunderland manager Regis Le Bris loves about one Black Cats player, following another Championship win that put them top of the table.

Sunderland top of the Championship

The Black Cats are flying under their new manager, with dreams of a genuine Championship automatic promotion push now growing by the week.

On Saturday, Sunderland picked up a 3-1 victory in the long trip south to Portsmouth, and it means Le Bris' side still have a 100% record to start to new season, winning all four league matches to date. They are the only team to achieve that goal.

Victories have also been secured against Cardiff City, Sheffield Wednesday and Burnley, the latter of which felt like a statement victory, due to the Clarets arguably being seen as the favourites to win the Championship title in 2024/25.

It is still early days, of course, and losing star man Jack Clarke to Ipswich Town is a massive blow, but life under Le Bris couldn't be going much better at the moment. Various players are thriving for Sunderland, including Chris Rigg, who at only 17 years of age, already looks like a seasoned veteran, featuring in all four league matches and starting three of them. It is another young gem who has come in for special praise, though.

Journalist talks up Le Bris' admiration for Mayenda

Writing for The Sunderland Echo on Monday, Smith claimed that Eliezer Mayenda has become a favourite of Le Bris' at Sunderland due to "his willingness to learn and how quickly he was able to understand the demands being placed on him in terms of his out-of-possession work".

He also adds that "at this point, we have to acknowledge that his status in this squad has changed", in terms of him now being first choice instead of a backup attacking option, perhaps even changing future transfer plans when it comes to signing a senior number nine.

Mayenda deserves all the praise that is coming his way, following an excellent start to the season that has seen him lead the line impressively. The 19-year-old has scored and assisted twice apiece in his first four Championship appearances of the season, while Le Bris himself has heaped praise on him.

“He truly sets a good example for the entire squad. Last season, he wasn’t in the starting lineup, but his desire to enhance his game is commendable. He possesses a wealth of talent, but being young means he is constantly striving to fine-tune his skills. His hard work was rewarded today."

At 19, Mayenda still has to be considered a work in progress, and fans must stay on his side if he goes through a bad run of form, but the early signs are so exciting.

He is starting every week on merit, and the fact that Smith also mentions he thinks the Portsmouth game was the teenager's "best showing" of the campaign to date – he bagged two assists at Fratton Park – suggests that he is only improving as a player.

Charlie Dean credits England's 'no-fear' environment with putting her on the fast track

Young spinner is Ashes-bound after impressing during the English summer

Valkerie Baynes22-Dec-2021Charlie Dean credits England’s “no-fear” environment with putting her on the fast track to becoming an international match-winner after initially being overlooked for a domestic contract.Dean, the 20-year-old Southern Vipers offspinner, made her international debut against New Zealand over the English summer, playing all five ODIs. In just her second match at this level, she claimed 4 for 36 to help England to victory in a rain-affected match at Worcester, and she added three more before Heather Knight’s century sealed a nail-biting victory – and the five-match series – in the fourth fixture at Derby. After being named in a 17-strong squad to tour Australia for the Women’s Ashes in January and February, Dean reflected on what turned out to be a whirlwind season in which she also became one of six players on professional contracts with the Vipers, having missed out during the inaugural round of deals announced a year ago.Related

Youngster Dean saves England with four-wicket haul

Knight vows to 'fight fire with fire' during Women's Ashes

“It was a bit of a shock, really, to be told that I was going to be involved in the squad for the New Zealand series,” Dean told ESPNcricinfo. “The environment is so open and welcoming that I felt at home pretty quickly on and off the field.”That team environment is something that really encourages people to show what they can do and there’s no real fear of mistakes, there’s just, ‘this is what we want you to do and this is what you can do, so go out there and do it’.”Whenever I play a game of cricket, I always want to influence the game, whether that’s in the field or potentially with the bat and to do that with my main skill is really a big confidence boost. To be able to take four wickets in the second game really cemented the fact that actually, I can do this, I can perform on the big stage, and that definitely helped me in the next couple of games.”While being a relative unknown might offer a small, short-lived advantage in Australia, Dean is under no illusions about the ferocity of the looming contest, thanks again to advice she’s received from within the England camp.”The rivalry against Australia is something that I’ve not really come across before,” Dean said. “Someone briefed me and said, ‘look, you know, they’re quite harsh against the old Pommies, so just be careful, know that you’re good enough and that’s okay’.”That’s something that I can get my head around and sort of be in my own little bubble so that if I play, then the battle won’t get to me too much. It’s something that you’ve always got to have in the back of your head and hopefully the things I’ve done building up to it will prepare me well for that.”

“Charlie’s been a good find”Heather Knight

Dean faced a stressful wait to make her England debut after she Maia Bouchier were named in the squad for the three-match T20I series against New Zealand immediately before the ODIs but were forced to isolate as possible contacts of a suspected Covid case in the Vipers team. Bouchier, also named in the Ashes squad, went on to play the next two T20Is, making her international debut in the process.Dean’s lack of red-ball experience makes her somewhat of an unknown when it comes to selection for the Test, which opens the multi-format Ashes series on January 27. Left-arm spinner Sophie Ecclestone, meanwhile, has played three Tests at the age of just 23, while the other two frontline spinners in England’s squad – offspinner Mady Villiers and leggie Sarah Glenn – are yet to make their Test debuts. Sophia Dunkley, who made her Test debut against India in June, bowled only one over of her legbreaks in that match, playing primarily as a batter and scoring a half-century.Knight, the England captain, was delighted with her expanding spin-bowling stocks and she backed Dean to offer something “different” in Australia, regardless of the format, with the Ashes series also comprising three T20Is and three ODIs.”They’re all in their early 20s, which is quite exciting,” Knight said. “They’re all very young spinners and traditionally as a spinner you mature in your late 20s, early 30s.Charlie Dean impressed Heather Knight during the Hundred•Getty Images”Charlie’s been a good find. She’s added something a little bit different and she’s had some success so far and I think she’ll be good on Australian pitches. She gets a lot of drop, a lot of overspin on the ball, which sometimes you need in Australia when it’s flat and it’s not turning sideways – you need that movement in the air to try and deceive and she’s definitely got that.”Aside from her England appearances, Dean found the ideal shop window in the Hundred, playing alongside Knight for London Spirit when she took six wickets at an average of 28.00 with an economy rate of 1.18 runs per ball. “Her nous probably impressed me the most,” Knight said. “I hadn’t seen much of her at all before I played with her at London Spirit.”She’s a very canny bowler, not just having the skills, she knows when to use them. She hasn’t played any red-ball cricket and we’ll have to have a little look at what to do selection-wise there but I think she’s got the skills to be able to be successful in all formats and the way she’s throwing herself into things.”The big moment for me when I realised we’ve got a player on our hands is that game in Worcester where she bowled those real key overs, took a four-for and bowled real pressure areas as well.”

Arteta signed a brand-new Arsenal contract till 2027 earlier this week, ending all doubts over the Spaniard's immediate future in the dugout, with his previous deal set to expire in 2025.

After putting pen to paper on his extension, Arteta expressed his delight and excitement over what lies ahead at Arsenal, as the Gunners seek to win their first Premier League title in over two decades.

“I feel extremely proud, very excited and am looking forward to what is coming next. I’m proud to be where I am and have the relationships that I have with everyone at the club," said Arteta on his new Arsenal contract.

“I feel extremely lucky to work every single day with good people and the ambition we have here. I feel very inspired, I feel challenged, I feel supported and I want to do much more than what we’ve already done together.

“Together with the players and everyone at the club, we are looking forward to the coming years, with our supporters, who have emotionally transformed the club and the team. Our supporters have transformed individuals and we are different now. You can tell that we are different and for me, that is down to them. We look forward to continuing the journey together.”

Arteta's fresh terms include a bumper pay rise to around £288,000-per-week, making him one of the best-paid managers in the Premier League behind Man City boss Pep Guardiola, but the tactician has little time to celebrate.

Arsenal are preparing for a crucial North London Derby against Tottenham this Sunday, where they're set to be without a host of key players. Declan Rice will miss the clash through suspension, while Mikel Merino is sidelined with a shoulder fracture.

It was the consensus that club captain Martin Odegaard's ankle injury would have him sidelined for the next few weeks, but Arteta has since confirmed in his Arsenal press conference that won't be the case, and he could even feature in the derby.

Adrien Rabiot makes one Arsenal demand after reaching out for talks

Despite the good news about Odegaard, their series of midfield absences still pose a serious threat to the Gunners. However, amid these tactical conundrums for Arteta, it is believed illustrious free agent midfielder Adrien Rabiot has approached them for talks.

The former Juventus and Paris-Saint Germain star would theoretically be a good stand-in for Odegaard, and at zero cost following his exit from Turin in the summer. Rabiot featured for France at Euro 2024 and made 31 Serie A appearances for Juve last season, scoring five and assisting three, so he remains a player of real quality despite being released.

Reports in the last week claim that Rabiot's contacted Arsenal over joining them via his representatives, and GiveMeSport have an update on the matter.

The outlet writes Arsenal are informed that Rabiot's demanding £220,000-per-week to join them or other suitors, with this one demand potentially stopping a Premier League move from coming to fruition.

This salary would make the 29-year-old one of Arsenal's highest-earners, so a Bosman deal for the Frenchman won't come cheap in that regard. His market value is still around £30 million (Transfermarkt), demonstrating Rabiot's pedigree, and he's been called an "extraordinary" player by Juve legend David Trezeguet.
