Chris Lynn narrowly misses out on becoming first Abu Dhabi T10 centurion

The opener was on 82 after the seventh over but faced only four more balls and finished unbeaten on 91

Not retaining Chris Lynn ‘a bad call’ by KKR – Yuvraj Singh

Chris Lynn came painfully close to becoming the first player to score an Abu Dhabi T10 century on Monday night, and said afterwards that there is ample opportunity to go nine runs better over the tournament’s remaining six days. The 29-year-old struck a blistering unbeaten 91 from a mere 30 balls, containing a total of nine fours and seven sixes, at a strike rate of 303.33 for Maratha Arabians. Lynn broke Alex Hales’ record of 87 not out in the ten-over tournament – also made while playing for the Arabians in 2018.He could have had the century had it not for being relatively starved of the strike towards the end of the Arabians innings. After smashing Harry Gurney for three fours and two sixes in the seventh over, Lynn was well placed with 82 from 26 balls.ALSO READ: Decoding T10 cricket with Amla, Sammy, Fleming and othersBut the opener faced only four of the last 18 balls of the innings because of a combination of Adam Lyth (30 off 18) demolishing Marchant de Lange in the eighth over and being unable to get Lynn back on strike quickly in the penultimate over.Lynn started the final over on 87 as the non-striker, unable to get down the other end until the final ball of the innings, which he hit for four.”Obviously when you get a bit closer, you want to get [to a hundred],” Lynn said. “But the guy at the other end [Lyth] was hitting boundaries as well. So to get 138 on that wicket was a really good job.”It would have been nice to get the first hundred of the T10 but that’s the way it goes and there are plenty more games in this tournament to try and get another opportunity to do that. We’ll just see what happens.”ALSO READ: How the toss is swaying fortunes in T10 cricketLynn’s team-mate Yuvraj Singh hailed the knock as outstanding. “It’s a sign of how the game has evolved that guys are getting close to scoring a hundred in a T10 game,” Yuvraj said. “It’s amazing how the game has changed over the years.”He [Lynn] is someone I have seen in the IPL. He has given some great starts to KKR [Kolkata Knight Riders]. I really don’t understand how they didn’t retain him. I think that’s a bad call, must send SRK (Shah Rukh Khan, the franchise owner) a message on that.”It has been a discussion often broached over the course of the T10 format’s emergence as to whether an individual century is possible, prompted by league owner Shaji ul Mulk offering up an apartment to the first centurion at the start of the inaugural season in 2017. Luke Ronchi top-scored with 70 that year, with the idea gaining real momentum in 2018.Chris Lynn came painfully close to becoming the first player to score an Abu Dhabi T10 century•Abu Dhabi T10

First, Sherfane Rutherford struck a hundred in a warm-up match that season before Mohammad Shahzad’s 74 not out from just 16 balls – an innings only brought to a premature end as the Rajputs chased down 95 in four overs – suggested it would be a matter of time before someone scored a T10 hundred.Hales, Jonny Bairstow (84*) and Rovman Powell (80*) went on to break the 80-run barrier in the second season as players inched closer to scoring a century. Will Jacks – a team-mate of Rutherford for Delhi Bulls this year – further greased the wheels by hitting a hundred in a ten-over contest for Surrey against their County Championship counterparts Lancashire at the ICC Academy in Dubai back in March. But the tournament’s move to Abu Dhabi seemed to imply that batsmen would struggle to get near that mark in 2019 due to slow, tacky pitches as well as the long square boundaries.Lynn, however, had other ideas, hitting relentlessly to all parts of the ground on a fresh pitch described as “amazing” by Abu Dhabi’s captain Moeen Ali and one that proved not to be as two-paced as the others used across the first three days.Lynn’s innings showed that as the tournament enters its second group stage, the race to become Abu Dhabi T10’s first centurion is well and truly back on.”We know there are players in the competition who can [hit a century],” Moeen, the man trying to counter Lynn’s onslaught, said. “I’m sure it’s going to happen very soon. There’s a great chance [of it happening] if somebody gets in.”

Rangers and Celtic want to sign the same player in January transfer window

Rangers have enquired over the loan signing of a "special" attacking player in the January transfer window, according to an update from journalist Dean Jones.

Rangers transfer news

Philippe Clement has another couple of weeks to conduct some important business in various areas of the pitch, assuming he wants to bring in new faces to aid his side's Scottish Premiership title push.

While left-back looks like a main area of focus, due to Ridvan Yilmaz and Borna Barisic's Rangers futures being in doubt, it looks as though attackers are also being targeted.

Leeds United youngster Joe Gelhardt is one player who has previously emerged as a possible option for the Gers, with the Englishman struggling for regular minutes this season, while Hearts star Lawrence Shankland has also been linked with a move to Ibrox.

Nottingham Forest attacker Emmanuel Dennis is another who has been backed to complete a move to Ibrox in the January window, but supporters seem to be more behind the idea of signing Shankland instead, perhaps due to his good form this season, as he leads the way in the scoring charts in the league.

Rangers making Joe Gelhardt enquiries

Speaking to Give Me Sport, Jones claimed that Rangers have enquired over the loan signing of Joe Gelhardt this month, but Celtic are also in the mix to snap him up.

Leeds forward Joe Gelhardt.

"I guess it'd be a loan move. Gelhardt would be a nice profile player because he seems ready to perform on the right platform. He's got excellent traits that probably need a bit of development now. I'm not surprised that enquiries are being made on both fronts from Rangers or Celtic at this moment in time.

"For a player like Gelhardt, it's probably confidence-boosting to have those conversations happening around you right now. Whether they can come to fruition and turn into a transfer is different, but I don't think it's harming anybody to look at that situation."

Gelhardt appears to be an exciting talent that he could be a star at Rangers, potentially thriving with a new challenge and taking to the Scottish game like a duck to water. The 21-year-old has incredible natural talent, whether it be weaving past tackles or finishing in classy fashion, and Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher once heaped praise on him after scoring a huge goal for Leeds against Norwich City, saying:

"He’s a special, special talent. He’ll be remembered now for this big goal, but I can assure you, he is a lad we will be talking about a lot in a few years’ time, he really is."

Leeds seemingly don't see Gelhardt as a key starter in the Championship promotion push this season, so a loan move to Rangers could make sense for all parties, although it looks as though Celtic will be providing strong competition.

Rangers now keen to sign in-demand forward for Philippe Clement

The Gers are still searching for attacking reinforcements…

This is someone who once scored 18 goals in just 27 appearances in Premier League 2 at youth team level, an overall tally of 20 in 31 for the Whites' Under-21s, outlining the quality he could bring to Rangers in the second half of the season.

Under-fire Rangers boss Russell Martin brutally branded a ‘shallow Pep Guardiola imposter’ after nightmare season continues with home defeat to Hearts

Rangers manager Russell Martin has been brutally slammed as a 'shallow Pep Guardiola imposter' by pundits following a disastrous start to the season. The criticism comes after a home defeat to Hearts left the Ibrox club languishing in 10th place, with Martin's philosophy branded 'self-sabotage' and 'style over substance'.

  • Rangers still without a win after Hearts defeat

Martin is facing intense pressure after being described as a "shallow Pep Guardiola imposter" whose philosophy is unsuited for the Ibrox club. The damning assessment came from pundits on amid a disastrous start to the season which has seen Rangers slump to 10th in the Scottish Premiership, winless in their last five league matches, culminating in a recent 2-0 home defeat to Hearts.

    Pundit slams Martin's 'fashionable football'

The criticism centres on Martin's perceived tactical inflexibility and stubborn commitment to a possession-based style. Pundit Max Scott accused the Rangers boss of being a "fashionable manager" who has been found out.

"I just get the feeling there’s something shallow about Russell Martin’s approach," Scott said. "I get the feeling Russell Martin is maybe cut from this cloth of managers that are essentially average imitators of Pep Guardiola – not even average because they’re imposters. There’s no proof in the pudding and there comes a time when a manager needs more than one weapon in his arsenal."

  • Southampton promotion season 'style over substance', says pundit

Fellow commentator Jack Cunningham reinforced the critique, pointing out that even Martin’s promotion-winning season with Southampton contained warning signs, including heavy defeats like a 5-0 loss to Sunderland.

"In all those games it was style over substance," Cunningham stated, arguing that Martin is failing to grasp the unique demands of managing Rangers. "Rangers are expected to win 90 per cent of their games. They’re expected to do well in Europe so to lose 9-1 on aggregate is shambolic. They won’t take it, it’s as simple as that.”

  • (C)Getty Images

What next for Martin as pressure mounts at Rangers?

With the atmosphere at Ibrox described as "toxic," Martin's position appears increasingly precarious. After overseeing a successful Championship campaign with Southampton, he was sacked last December after a woeful start to their Premier League return, having won one of their 16 matches. He has since failed to win over a skeptical fanbase since arriving in Glasgow, and the team's dire league position and humiliating 9-1 aggregate exit from European competition have left him with little credit. Pundits suggest that unless he shows a willingness to adapt his approach, his tenure could be short-lived.

Belgian newspaper reveals major Amadou Onana exit update from Everton

It has been quite the month for Everton, who were hit with the news of a second Financial Fair Play charge this season following a 10-point deduction earlier in the campaign. The Toffees now await punishment, hoping to avoid a mountain to climb when it comes to securing their Premier League status. With the transfer window also open, things could have quite easily got worse for those at Goodison Park, who have had to field interest in Amadou Onana.

Onana transfer news

Onana's name has been at the centre of the headlines since the start of the window. The main clubs mentioned in pursuit of the Belgian have been Arsenal and Newcastle United. According to Sacha Taviolieri, an Arsenal sale could still see them make a last-minute move to sign Onana this month. Meanwhile, recent reports have claimed that Newcastle are eyeing a move for the Everton star in the hope of replacing Joelinton, who is set to miss the rest of the season through injury.

Everton midfielder Amadou Onana.

Both Premier League sides look set to face disappointment, however. According to Belgian outlet DH Les Sports, via Goodison News, Onana has decided to stay at Everton this month and help the Toffees avoid relegation. In a major boost for Sean Dyche and his side, the former Burnley boss will now hope to get past the transfer window unscathed and ready to push into the comforts of mid-table.

Given that Everton are yet to welcome a single reinforcement, keeping hold of Onana so late in the window should prove to be crucial. The last thing that those at Goodison Park need is a scramble to land a replacement for their star in the remaining days of the January transfer window. Now seemingly able to breathe a sigh of relief, Everton will hope that the good news just continues to come.

"Exciting" Onana crucial to Everton survival chances

As things stand, Everton sit just one point above the relegation zone, having played one game more than Luton Town to leave them in a precarious position. If the Toffees want to gain control of their fate, however, then Onana could quickly prove to be the key. The 22-year-old has more than earned the interest of Newcastle and title-challenging Arsenal and will only continue to showcase his talents in Dyche's side.

Former Belgium and Everton manager Roberto Martinez was full of praise for Onana when the midfielder first arrived at Everton. He told Sky Sports via HITC: “Really exciting footballer. I know that sometimes when we speak about players, it’s very difficult to measure their potential. I think we are talking about a 20-year-old boy, who is probably one of the most talented at that age in European football, and that’s how excited we are in Belgium.

“He’s got the physicality and the presence of a player that the Everton fans know very well in Marouane Fellaini. He can become anything in that central area, so I can understand the excitement around Everton – this is one of the most exciting prospects in European football at this present time.”

Cricket grapples with concussion protocol after Rahim and Mithun blows

It often happens that a batsman chooses to play on after being hit, but that is not a good thing

Varun Shetty at Eden Gardens23-Nov-2019Cricket’s newly-introduced protocols for concussion testing and substitutions were in the spotlight on the second day of the Kolkata Test, with two batsmen – Mohammad Mithun and Mushfiqur Rahim – continuing to bat after being struck on their heads by bouncers. Two other Bangladesh batsmen had already been diagnosed with concussions in the first innings and substituted. In the second innings, Mithun was tested and showed no signs of concussion before coming back out and being dismissed soon after. Bangladesh confirmed that Rahim also showed no early signs of concussion. He batted through to stumps and is currently unbeaten on 59.Had either batsman been diagnosed with concussion, Bangladesh had only one player – Mustafizur Rahman, a bowler – available on the bench to act as substitute.Concussion protocols were introduced into the ICC playing conditions on August 1 this year, after years of deliberation following Phil Hughes’ death in 2014 and a deeper understanding about brain injuries in the broader world of sports. About two weeks after the playing conditions were amended, Australia’s Steven Smith became the first player to be substituted in a Test match with a diagnosed concussion. While it’s common for batsmen to continue to bat after passing initial concussion Tests, in most cases at international level, they have been found later to have batted with a concussion. This was true of Smith during the Ashes, as well as Hashim Amla during the World Cup this year.In New Zealand, Henry Nicholls was hit on the head but continued batting after two concussion tests – one when he was hit on Friday evening and another just before play on Saturday. The story was a little different last week though when Hamish Rutherford batted on for New Zealand A after being struck, made a fifty, then missed the rest of the match after failing follow-up tests.Henry Nicholls is hit by a delivery from Jofra Archer•AFP / Getty Images

In the absence of strong mandatory procedures, a lot of power still rests with the players, who would naturally prefer to go on batting. The topic was briefly front and centre as the physio spent a long time chatting with Mithun before he saw the over through and went in unbeaten at tea. Other injuries such as the one Mahmudullah suffered – a hamstring strain – are often readily apparent. The player feels pain immediately and the case for treatment is clear. Concussions and brain injuries though are hard to gauge as the onset of symptoms may be delayed for up to 48 hours.Cricket’s protocols depend on the appointed medical representative of a team – usually the physio – to run standardised tests and submit a report to the match referee in case a player fails the tests. But, as mentioned in the examples earlier, players can sometimes show no signs of trauma until the next day, which means they play on at less than 100% and at great risk of being struck again with the bowlers under no obligation to not bowl bouncers again. To avoid this circumstance, a sport like rugby, for instance, decrees that a player hit on the head has to compulsorily go off and is not allowed back on till he is proven to have no signs of concussion.Another crucial element of the blows sustained by the Bangladesh batsmen is that this was the first time many of them were playing an international match under lights with the pink ball. Fast bowler Al-Amin Hossain said there were no issues with the visibility as such, but India batsman Cheteshwar Pujara said otherwise.”I thought light and pink ball had a role to play,” Pujara said after the second day’s play. “Because as a batsman it’s not easy to pick the ball, especially short balls, the kind of pace our fast bowlers have. I think it (the batsmen being hit) is because of the pink ball and playing under lights, because their batters, as far as I know, they haven’t even played any first-class games with the pink ball. It’s not easy.”Of the four Bangladesh batsmen that were hit during the Test, Mithun and Rahim were the only ones to be hit after sunset, under completely artificial lighting. Mahmudulllah, meanwhile, has been “walking around” in the dressing room and could come back out to bat on Sunday.

Rather than bulldoze the historic ground, the club are interested in preserving the stadium and reducing its capacity from 73,000 to 30,000. It would host women's and academy matches and also be a monument to the club's home, still housing statues and the memorials to the Munich air disaster.

Building a brand new stadium is thought to cost up to £2 billion ($2.5bn). United's minority shareholder Sir Jim Ratcliffe has called for the stadium to be a 'Wembley of the North' and has held discussions with British Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer over establishing a private-public partnership, which is controversial as it would involve tax payers' money.

United, who have set up a task force including former captain Gary Neville, still need to decide whether or not to go ahead with the brand new stadium or to renovate Old Trafford, which would cost around £1bn ($1.3bn). The club have consulted 30,000 fans on the issue and opinion is split over the two options. However, it is thought that maintaining the stadium's heritage could help sway more people to approve the plans to build the brand-new arena next door.

Erik ten Hag personally wants "monster" Matthijs de Ligt at Man Utd – Sky

During his time in Amsterdam, Erik ten Hag led Ajax all the way to the semifinals of the Champions League, claiming the scalps of Real Madrid and Juventus along the way. Only a dramatic last-minute goal from Tottenham's Lucas Moura in the second leg could deny them a place in the showpiece.

When Ten Hag arrived at Manchester United last year, he reunited with one of the components of that side in Donny van de Beek, signed by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in 2020, but things haven't worked out for the midfielder at Old Trafford, and he's now joined Eintracht Frankfurt on loan. Andre Onana, the goalkeeper from that Ajax team, will hope to have better luck in the Premier League after Ten Hag brought him to Manchester last summer.

Now it seems that the United boss is eyeing another of his former stars, this time at the back, with a lack of playing time presenting an opportunity.

De Ligt frustration could present United chance

According to Sky Sport Germany, Ten Hag is "very interested" in signing Matthijs de Ligt from Bayern Munich. Any move will depend on the former staying in the job – United are currently struggling in seventh place – but De Ligt could become "one of the top transfer targets" in the summer if he can survive.

De Ligt

Bayern have recently signed Eric Dier from Tottenham and they want another centre-back too, with PSG's Nordi Mukiele and Barcelona's Ronald Araujo both mentioned. De Ligt is concerned that he could become the fourth-choice in his position if one of those player arrives, and that means a transfer "is not out of the question".

De Ligt used to idolise Ronaldo

De Ligt left Ajax at the end of the aforementioned season to join Juventus in a €86m deal, and then spent three years in Turin before Bayern acquired him for €67m. Bundesliga commentator Kevin Hatchard talked it up as a "monster" signing, having seen De Ligt make the World XI and UEFA Team of the Year on the back of his success in the Netherlands.

He justified that initial hype by earning a spot in the Bundesliga Team of the Season in his first year, but this year he's undeniably fell down the pecking order. While he's missed six league matches through injury, he's only started four of the 10 for which he has been available.

A move to United is likely to appeal, firstly on the basis that he's had success with Ten Hag before. Speaking in 2022, De Ligt described his former boss as "a really good trainer" who "has a lot of qualities".

But beyond that, there may be a sentimental draw too for a player who idolised Cristiano Ronaldo as a child, "especially in his time when he played at Manchester United". De Ligt says his first football shirt was a Red Devils top with the Portuguese's name on the back, and he may have the chance to wear the strip himself before long, albeit at the other end of the pitch.

Abdur Razzak becomes first Bangladeshi bowler to bag 600 first-class wickets

‘I am sure someone will go past me but I am glad that I am the first one’

Mohammad Isam02-Nov-2019Abdur Razzak has climbed to a new height among Bangladeshi cricketers by becoming the first bowler to reach 600 first-class wickets. Razzak, the veteran left-arm spinner, completed the milestone during Khulna Division’s NCL match at the Shere Bangla National Stadium.Razzak began the match on 594 wickets, and swept past the milestone while bagging figures of 7 for 69 in Rangpur’s first innings. Six of Razzak’s wickets came in an unbroken spell of 18.1 overs, during the course of which Rangpur collapsed from 139 for 3 to 224 all out. The 600th wicket was that of Robiul Haque, the No. 9 batsman out bowled.Razzak, who had reached the landmark of 500 first-class wickets in January 2018, said the new milestone delighted him, and reckoned it would take a while before another Bangladeshi bowler reaches it.”I am happy with my achievement,” Razzak said. “Six hundred wickets is not a matter of joke. It is a big number in our context. There have been bigger milestones reached in other countries but nobody has done it here, and [the next bowler] will probably take time to reach this number.”I have never imagined reaching this stage of 500 or 600 wickets. It is a big thing in a Bangladeshi context. We don’t have a lot of people with 200 or 300 wickets. I am sure someone will go past me but I am glad that I am the first one.”Abdur Razzak has become the first Bangladeshi bowler to pick up 600 first-class wickets•Saif Hasnat

The milestone is also a tribute to Razzak’s fitness, particularly after the BCB called for higher fitness levels shortly before the 2019-20 season began in October. It had put the spotlight on Razzak and other senior players, but he managed to pull through. The seven-wicket haul has put Razzak on top of the NCL’s wicket charts for the season.”I am fortunate these records are coming from me,” Razzak said. “Someone would have achieved them. You need skills to reach this level and I don’t know if I am that skillful. I try hard. I think not giving up is my skill. I am still passionate about playing when I am out in the middle. I can’t think of anything else.”Razzak’s first-class performances over the previous five years earned him a Test recall last year, after four years out of the side, but despite his performance against Sri Lanka in Dhaka – he took five wickets, including a first-innings four-for – he wasn’t retained in the side for their next series. Still, he says, the fire continues to burn within.”I can’t really say where I see myself, or where I can reach,” Razzak said. “I also don’t know when I will finish. As long as my fitness and desire is there, I will keep playing.”

Reporter shares "huge" transfer update on future of Celtic ace Matt O’Riley

A "huge" transfer update has emerged regarding the future of a "top player" at Celtic, courtesy of Football Insider reporter Pete O'Rourke.

Matt O'Riley's Celtic future

The Hoops have some key players all over the pitch, but one individual who has arguably stood out as a star man this season is Matt O'Riley. The 23-year-old has been one of the most productive attacking players at the club, if not the most, registering 14 goals contributions (nine goals and five assists) in 22 Scottish Premiership appearances to date.

Worryingly for Celtic, however, O'Riley has been linked with a number of Premier League clubs recently, with the likes of West Ham, Newcastle United and Tottenham all mentioned as possible suitors in January. That highlights the level that he is performing at currently, and Hoops supporters will surely be desperate to see him stay put for as long as possible.

Now, the Denmark international's future at Parkhead has been made a little clearer, with a key report dropping over whether he will stay or leave next month.

Report drops key Matt O'Riley update

Writing for Football Insider, O'Rourke claimed that O'Riley wants to remain at Celtic beyond the January transfer window, despite the aforementioned links with top English clubs, with the Hoops demanding a "huge" fee to even consider parting ways with the player.

Celtic'sMattO'Riley

"Celtic ace Matt O’Riley wants to remain at the club this January amid Premier League interest, sources have told Football Insider. It is believed that the 23-year-old loves Celtic and is enjoying his football under manager Brendan Rodgers.

"Football Insider correspondent Pete O’Rourke told Football Insider’s Inside Track Podcast that Celtic would demand a “huge” fee to even consider letting him this winter. It is believed that there will be major interest from England and across Europe in the Danish international this summer but his main focus is in Glasgow where he wants to help Celtic retain the league title."

This is fantastic news for anyone of a Celtic persuasion and a boost for Brendan Rodgers, considering how vital O'Riley is to his side's hopes of sealing yet another Scottish Premiership crown this season. So often, the attacking midfielder has been the creative hub of the team, as well as being the joint top scorer this season, so to lose him midway through the campaign would be a crushing blow.

Danish pundit Peter Kjaer is someone who has been impressed by what he has seen from the Hoops hero, talking him up recently and saying:

"I’ve seen O’Riley play, he’s a top player. I know the national coach also thinks he’s great. He spoke about him before the 2022 World Cup so he’s been following him."

Brendan Rodgers is not messing around at Celtic in January…

Celtic may have to accept that the same level of interest in O'Riley will return at the end of this season, at which point he may decide that a fresh challenge appeals, but for now, keeping hold of him for the remainder of 2023/24 has to take precedence, before assessing things next summer.
