Tamim Iqbal: 'Nurul Hasan's innings was very good to see'

Bangladesh’s young players step up to seal a 3-0 sweep over Zimbabwe

Mohammad Isam20-Jul-2021Two critical moments in the third ODI demanded that Bangladesh find someone besides their experienced trio to help the team turn a corner. On both occasions, the “other guys” came through. Nurul Hasan will take the headlines. The 27-year old was playing his first ODI in five years and yet he played the finisher’s role to perfection, scoring an unbeaten 45 off 39 balls to seal victory with two overs to spare. But there were so many crucial contributions.Mohammad Saifuddin and Mustafizur Rahman took five wickets in the space of 13 balls, at a time when Ryan Burl and Sikandar Raza were tearing it up, to bowl Zimbabwe out for 298. Bangladesh have not always had pace bowlers capable of completely changing the momentum of a game like that. Then came Hasan.Zimbabwe had removed Tamim Iqbal – who made a scintillating 112 – and Mahmudullah off successive deliveries. They had their tails up. But that didn’t help one bit.Hasan displayed exactly the sort of batting Bangladesh have been waiting for from one of their younger players. He was calm. He trusted his game. His six boundaries were all perfect cricketing shots. No innovation necessary. He added 64 for the fifth wicket with Mohammad Mithun and 34 for the unbroken sixth wicket stand with Afif Hossain to help the team complete a 3-0 sweep.Captain Iqbal was pleased with Hasan’s performance but made a point to add that his spot – and a couple of others in the middle order – is still up for grabs.”I think everyone should get opportunities,” Iqbal said. “(Mohammad Mithun) didn’t do well in the last couple of matches but if you think back to New Zealand, he made a good contribution in the game we should have won. We don’t have the perfect player at No. 5 and 6 so we are giving them opportunities. Today Sohan’s [Nurul Hasan] innings was very good to see. There are two-three people who are fighting for one spot.”Iqbal played a stroke-filled innings and reached his fastest ODI hundred, off 87 balls.”I felt I was in good rhythm,” he said. “I didn’t think it was a challenging time. I felt I was batting quite well in both Tests and ODIs recently, but maybe I missed out on scoring big runs. I am happy to have contributed in this chase.”He admitted he played through pain due to his knee injury, which will keep him out of action for at least two months. “I was going through a lot of pain although I wasn’t showing it. My knee is heavily taped. It is such an injury that maybe if I continue, I might do the job, but if it flares up, I will be out of cricket for seven-eight months.”I don’t think we need to take that risk. I should be fine before the T20 World Cup if I take rest for eight to ten weeks during which I will do the rehab,” he said.Shakib Al Hasan, who was adjudged Player-of-the-Series for his all-round performance, said that despite the 3-0 series result, Bangladesh were tested in all the matches. Shakib himself had bailed the side out with an unbeaten 96 in the second game when they were 173 for 7, chasing 241.”I think we faced a number of situations when we got tested,” he said. “I think we passed those tests, which was satisfying. But there’s always room for improvement. We should take as much as possible from this series to the next ones. We have to keep improving.”

The second coming of Saqib Mahmood, the 'King of Barbados'

The last few months have shown England that Saqib Mahmood is a bowler they can once again call upon and rely on

Cameron Ponsonby11-Nov-2024For a lad from Lancashire, Saqib Mahmood has more connections to Barbados than most. From a professional perspective, this is where he made his Test debut in March 2022. In a high-scoring draw, Mahmood stood out with a performance that seemed to lock him in for years. He was the point-of-difference bowler England had been screaming out for. Where everyone else wanted the new ball, he bowled with the old. When everyone else bowled 82mph, he bowled 87mph. Chris Woakes at home, Saqib Mahmood away. Set your watch to it.But then the injuries came. Consecutive stress fractures meant the best part of two years out and a ‘what-if’ storyline developing for a bowler who was meant to be England’s present and future.Related

And from a personal perspective, he’s spent a lot of time here. He’s great mates with Jofra Archer, the pair often using the island as a training base. Have a bowl, hang out, and go to the spots you don’t know about because you’re not a local. For the ODI series that began in Antigua, Mahmood flew out to Barbados ten days early to prepare. He even enquired about playing a match for Archer’s club side, Wildey CC, to aid his preparation. The ECB approved, but the match was scheduled over two weekends and meant it wasn’t possible.”I hadn’t played 50-over cricket in so long,” says Mahmood, “so I was wondering if I could get a game.”His love of the Caribbean has attracted attention from his team-mates, with Mahmood refusing to reveal the nickname his peers have given him.”I’m not saying it,” he laughs. “Because it’s going to end up as a headline.”Fortunately his team-mates aren’t so discreet.”Sam Curran’s been calling him the King of Barbados,” confirmed Jos Buttler with a smile.Saqib Mahmood ripped out three in a ten-ball set in the Hundred final•ECB/Getty ImagesIt is fitting then, that the King of Barbados’ second coming as an England cricketer comes on the island. Across the two T20Is at the Kensington Oval, he took six wickets. A brutal opening spell on Saturday reduced West Indies to 18 for 3, before an attacking, and occasionally wild, spell of bowling on Sunday netted him 2 for 20.”He feels if the ball’s got some movement, he wants to push it up there,” Buttler said of Mahmood’s three overs which included six wides. “Obviously that’s sometimes harder to control, but he chased those wickets which we asked of him.”It’s hard to gauge where Mahmood sits in the current international set-up. His position as England’s pitch independent bowler has been usurped by Gus Atkinson and Brydon Carse, with both also being more capable with the bat.But the last few months have shown England that he is a bowler they can once again call upon and rely on. His performance in the Hundred final was one of the competition’s first ‘I was there’ moments. Three wickets in seven deliveries, with his four-ball working-over of Kieron Pollard as good as it gets.

Remarkably, it is over five years since Mahmood first played for England – a T20I against New Zealand in 2019 that preceded two-and-a-half years of being ever-present in squads but an irregular on the field

“You’ve got one of the best players to have ever played the game,” his captain Sam Billings summarised at the time. “And you’ve had him on toast.”Mahmood’s decision to sign a white-ball-only contract with Lancashire raised eyebrows. On the surface, it looked like another domino to fall in the direction of the proliferation of franchise cricket, but this is false. He has himself said that he still aspires to play Test cricket, with a large part of his decision being made in loyalty to Lancashire so they don’t pay him for something his body might not allow him to do.”I think that’s been taken out of context slightly,” Mahmood said of his decision. “If you look at my injury history over the last couple of years, I’ve obviously had two big injuries. And there was a time this year where I said to the guys I didn’t really want to play any red-ball cricket because I was nervous about my body.Saqid Mahmood bowled a blistering spell in the first T20I•Getty Images”In the end, I played a couple of Champo [County Championship] games, but what this contract allows me to do is, if my body isn’t up to playing red-ball, then I don’t feel bad for not playing. But red ball is definitely still on my agenda.”Obviously there was a bit of backlash from Lancashire supporters who were annoyed, but I can assure them that I still want to play red ball.”Remarkably, it is over five years since Mahmood first played for England – a T20I against New Zealand in 2019 that preceded two-and-a-half years of being ever-present in squads but an irregular on the field. In total, he has 27 international appearances across formats, averaging five matches a year.England have long relied on the Bajan population to boost their ranks. First there was Chris Jordan, then there was Archer before Phil Salt and now Jacob Bethell, who are counted within England’s international cricketers. But now, three years after the island voted to become a republic, they can rely on a fifth. Saqib Mahmood. The King of Barbados.

Thomas Frank may have just found Spurs’ new Mousa Dembele vs Newcastle

Tottenham Hotspur responded in stoppage time to cancel out Newcastle United’s controversial late penalty at St. James’ Park and arrest their losing run.

It was more of the same in the first half, with Spurs unable to test the goalkeeper for the fourth successive game before the break. But as in Paris last week, Thomas Frank’s side showed fight after the break, and this was typified by Cristian Romero as he scored twice to secure a point.

Bruno Guimaraes opened the scoring, but Anthony Gordon’s spot kick was a contentious call, and Arsenal correspondent Charles Watt even commented on the “madness” in seeing it given.

But the captain’s contribution also saw Tottenham end a run of four losses to the Magpies, and it gives Frank a foundation to build on throughout December.

Cristian Romero leads the Spurs' fightback

Romero is among the most aggressive and tenacious players in the Premier League. He led by example on Tyneside, scoring both goals with a brave header and dramatic bicycle kick in the dying embers.

On his return from suspension, Romero reminded the fans of the dimension he adds when on the field and wearing the armband.

Defensively, the Argentina international was something of a mixed bag, though, only winning six of 13 contested duels across the evening and being skinned by Harvey Barnes for the winger’s chance.

However, the 27-year-old made five ball recoveries and five clearances, also blocking two shots. He led by example.

Romero’s heroics will secure the headlines this morning, but there was arguably a Spurs man in front of him who played an even more impressive game, point-sealing strikes aside.

Frank has found Spurs' new Mousa Dembele

In testing times this season, 19-year-old Lucas Bergvall has stepped up and looked like one of Tottenham’s most promising players, purposeful on the ball and combative in the challenge.

He’s still so young, but the teenager’s maturity and natural technical flair indicate a certain likeness to former Lilywhites star Mousa Dembele.

His heart and passion are clear to see, and as he polishes his natural skillset, he could emulate Dembele’s all-controlling role in Mauricio Pochettino’s midfield, earning him so many plaudits.

Newcastle were on the front foot for much of the game, but Bergvall helped repel the hosts throughout.

One Spurs podcast host even remarked that the Swedish talent was “a class above the rest in the first half”, effortless on the ball and tenacious in a way which hasn’t been matched by his teammates (barring Romero).

How often was this the case with Dembele? his elegance and physicality made him a unique midfielder, and it was his effortless dribbling that led Belgian teammate Kevin De Bruyne to call him “the best in the world” during his heyday.

Bergvall isn’t there yet, but he’s shining in a Tottenham team which, at times, appears allergic to positive attacking play, inviting pressure on themselves with poor passing.

However, the club’s never-say-die attitude was embodied by players like the skipper and Bergvall, with the Scandinavian star showing off both sides of his game by winning his tackle and succeeding with both attempts to carry the ball forward.

Football.london gave him a 7/10 post-match rating and acknowledged Bergvall’s intensity in pressing against the Newcastle engine room and providing plenty of energy to keep the spirited fightback focused.

Bergvall has some way to go before he could say he is on a level with Dembele at his Tottenham best, but this is the kind of profile and the kind of performance that Frank needs from his team to start playing with an exciting identity.

Shan Masood, bowlers combine to notch up record 110-run win for Multan Sultans

The biggest loss by runs in PSL history also eliminated the Quetta Gladiators from the playoffs race

Debayan Sen16-Jun-2021A fluent half-century from Shan Masood, who hit 73, and a fantastic bowling and fielding display spearheaded by Imran Tahir, who grabbed 3 for 7, took the Multan Sultans to a thumping 110-run victory, knocking the Quetta Gladiators out of contention for the PSL playoffs. This is also the biggest margin of victory by runs in the league’s history; in fact, the Sultans overwrote the previous record by 39 runs.Put into bat by Sarfaraz Ahmed, the Sultans’ innings owed their early impetus to Masood, as he helped bring up 50 off six overs. There weren’t a lot of dot balls, with Mohammad Rizwan happy to work the ball around, as Masood found the boundaries with ridiculous ease. Standing tall, he peppered the arc between midwicket and covers at will, with the pick of the shots a firm on drive to a length ball from Usman Shinwari. Masood looked even more dangerous after the powerplay, smacking Mohammad Nawaz for six over midwicket before going straight down the ground for another maximum off the very next ball, en route to 50 off 26 deliveries. An all-too-brief fightback by the Gladiators
The introduction of Khurram Shahzad brought the Gladiators some hope, with Rizwan chopping him on to his off stump to start the ninth over, thus ending a 72-run association for the first wicket. Zahir Khan gave his team another lift by getting Sohaib Maqsood to miss one that turned into him to tickle the top of off, leaving the Sultans at 88 for 2 at the halfway mark.Johnson Charles started briskly, using the pace of Shinwari to guide him past third man for four early on, and this gave some breathing space to a tiring Masood. However, before holing out to long-on in the 14th over delivered by Hassan Khan, Masood would repeat the loft over long-off and smash over midwicket for six on the way to posting his highest PSL score in the process. The Sultans were left with an opening to surge on to a massive score, but Rilee Rossouw then skipped down the wicket to Hassan and top-edged an intended lofted drive towards square leg, where Usman Khan came running in from the deep to take a diving catch. Zahir then spun a web around Khushdil Shah, zipping googlies and conventional legspinners across him, while also inducing an edge for a sharp chance that Ahmed failed to latch on to in a 16th over that fetched the Sultans just one run off the bat.The final push and a sign of things to come
The Sultans ended up pillaging 49 off the last four overs, which really should have been contained had Hassan held on to a Charles flick off Shahzad that went through his fingers and hit the midwicket boundary skirting on the full when he was on 23. Charles eventually fell to Shahzad for 47, but by then having clubbed Mohammad Hasnain for four down the ground and whipping him over midwicket for six. Post that, some hefty blows from Khushdil Shah saw the Sultans through to 183.Ahmed had inserted the opposition hoping for some dew, but there didn’t appear any when the Gladiators began their chase. Jake Weatherald struck some meaty blows early on, picking up two slower balls from Sohail Tanvir, depositing the first over wide long-on before swinging the next down to fine leg for four. He welcomed Imran Khan with a gorgeous lofted extra cover drive for six, but at 27 without loss one ball into the fourth over, that was about as good as the evening could get for the Gladiators.Crash! Boom! Bang!
Imran got a sharp length ball to take Weatherald’s edge through to Rizwan, and two balls later, Cameron Delport skipped down the wicket and popped a slower ball to mid-off. Usman was run-out in comic fashion, having overrun a quick single after Ahmed tapped a ball to point, and thus not responding to his captain’s call for an overthrow in good time. At the end of the powerplay, the Gladiators were going at a run a ball, but had consumed 21 dot deliveries and three precious wickets in the process.Azam Khan then fell to a lazy waft off Blessing Muzarabani to leave the Gladiators at 46 for 4. They then lost four more wickets for just 13 runs, with Rizwan afforded the luxury of bringing on Tahir after nine overs. His first ball produced the wicket of Nawaz, who had batted competently for 10, run-out through a Tahir deflection at the non-striker’s end. Tahir then mesmerised the lower order, pinging Shinwari and Shahzad leg before after having induced a false shot from Hassan.Fittingly, the last wicket fell to Shahnawaz Dhani, who joined Wahab Riaz at the top of the wickets tally with 14. While the Gladiators are on their way out, Wednesday’s result might also have severely dented the hopes of the Karachi Kings following the significant boost to the Sultans’ net run rate.

Harmanpreet serves up a reminder of Harmonster

India needed a big win to keep their World Cup campaign on track, and their captain delivered a blockbuster like old times

Shashank Kishore10-Oct-20242:59

‘The timing of Harmanpreet’s knock makes it special’

As the buzzer hooted to signal drinks during the India-Sri Lanka clash in Dubai, Harmanpreet Kaur, who had been slouching on her chair and gently massaging her neck, suddenly picked up two bats and galloped down the steps from the gallery to a wider space around the boundary edge. One bat tucked behind the other, Harmanpreet went through the full range of motions of the kind she would practice at the driving range, focusing on her neck position and movements while completing her swing. Once happy with where she was at, Harmanpreet quickly jogged back up and pulled up a chair next to coach Amol Muzumdar. The head coach had just returned after having a chat with openers Smriti Mandhana and Shafali Verma at the drinks interval. India had set themselves a strong base at 78 without loss; now it was time to inject momentum. After a quick chat with Muzumdar, Harmanpreet was ready to rumble having selected her weapon of destruction.Related

When Mandhana rocked back to pull Chamari Athapaththu to the deep-square-leg fence in the 13th over to bring up her half-century, Harmanpreet was fully charged, slapping the bat with her gloves. And when Mandhana was run out in the 13th over, Harmanpreet pranced to the middle and took guard at No. 3.It’s a spot that had become such a massive talking point in the lead-up to this tournament – India have tried as many as five options since Muzumdar became coach in December 2023 – that she put her hand up and decided to embrace the challenge head-on. It was now time for her to walk the talk with almost everything on the line.India needed not just a win but a big one to steer clear of the net run rate conversations, at least momentarily. And the India captain served up a blockbuster, of the kind you knew she could play, but hadn’t as often as she would’ve liked.A part of the allure in watching Harmanpreet bat without scoreboard pressure is to see her induce fear in the bowlers. The quick trigger movement to off, where she sets herself to sweep, is followed by quickly getting into position with a crouched back knee that forms her base. The bat swing then comes into sync as she generates immense power. By now, the bat seems like a sledgehammer in her hands. The ability to sweep anywhere between the arc from fine leg to wide-ish long-on can often have the bowlers contend with a lot of pressure even before they have delivered the ball. And when she executed on Wednesday, it felt like the coming together of a proper rediscovery and not reinvention. She made this possibly by simply reverting to her “in the zone” avatar where anything in her arc simply gets swept or slogged.Harmanpreet Kaur’s 52 lifted India to 172•ICC via Getty ImagesIt can’t be denied that Harmanpreet has been a victim of her own lofty standards. Derby 2017 made us believe she can be a miracle woman who can conjure magic out of nothing. And when it didn’t come as often as Harmanpreet, and India, would’ve liked, it made you wonder if her best years were behind her.All said, Wednesday’s innings wasn’t flawless. She attempted to paddle her first two deliveries and quickly realised with the bowlers giving her little pace to work with, it was more prudent trying to force the pace herself. When she premeditated a sweep, she survived a close lbw shout with a thin edge saving her through UltraEdge. With five overs left, Harmanpreet was on 4 off 7, struggling for timing, not fully tuned to the pace and grip of the pitch that made it hard to score off spinners. And then a full toss from Sugandika Kumari unshackled her. As she stepped out to drill it over the infield, it was as if a weight had lifted off her shoulders; she has flicked on ‘in the zone’ mode. Two balls later, this couldn’t have been more evident when she unleashed her slog sweep for her first six. This shot truly got her into the elements, and because the bowlers weren’t sure if she would slog or sweep, they attempted to take pace off. Harmanpreet showed her full range by bringing out a powerful, fine paddle, reminiscent of Sachin Tendulkar’s off Shane Warne from the rough outside leg.Harmanpreet should have been out in the 17th over when she hit a full toss straight to Inoka Ranaweera at cover. Had it been taken, it may have elicited chatter around how she flattered to deceive yet again. But like quality players do, she made Sri Lanka pay.On 22 off 16 at the time, she went on to make 30 off the next 11 balls, during which she made a mockery of the fields, boldly accepting the challenge of clearing mid-off, not once, but twice, with bullet-like straight hits with razor-sharp precision, fueled by forearm strength and immense bottom-handed power to raise her half-century.The knock laid the foundation for a massive win that India hope will have reinvigorated their T20 World Cup campaign. Everything about her innings from that dropped chance rolled back time to memories from over a decade ago, when she first made the world sit up and take note with a seminal century in a World Cup game against England at Brabourne Stadium, long before playing that epochal knock against Australia. It may have only been a half-century, but in it was a Harmanpreet classic of old, where she was energised, outrightly dominant and in the zone.

  • WHAT HAPPENED?

Arsenal boss Arteta was left furious after the mega Premier League clash between Arsenal and Manchester City on Sunday as he expressed frustration over the referee's decision to send off Leandro Trossard for kicking the ball away, after Doku got away without punishment for doing a similar thing earlier in the first half.

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

A nerve-wracking Premier League encounter was on display at Etihad Stadium as Arsenal came from behind to take a 2-1 lead at half-time. However, the Gunners were reduced to 10 men in the dying minutes of the first half which forced them to go ultra-defensive in the next 45 minutes. Arteta's men successfully managed to contain the City attackers for the majority of the second half only to concede a last-gasp goal as John Stones netted a 98th-minute equaliser.

  • WHAT MIKEL ARTETA SAID

Speaking to Sky Sports after the match, Arteta said of the difference between the Doku and Trossard incidents: "It is very obvious, I don't need to talk about it. I think the red card is very clear, very obvious what people think. It is not my job to come here and judge what happened. My job is to survive in one of the most difficult environments there is in football for 55 minutes and try to get things done to survive.

"The rest is not my job, but it has already happened twice in five games which is very worrying to see in the best league the Premier League. [The red card] makes the situation impossible. It is very, very hard to play with 11 players, with 10 it is impossible. With ten you have to defend your six-yard box time and time again."

Better signing than Mbeumo: Man Utd renew £57m interest in "new Maradona"

Joining Manchester United in their pomp is easy. Joining Manchester United in their current state, fresh off the back of a worst-ever Premier League campaign at Old Trafford, requires a little bit of craziness.

Craziness to believe that you can be the man to lift the Red Devils out of their ongoing decline, with ex-Brentford talisman Bryan Mbeumo – signed on a £71m deal over the summer – already looking like he’s ready to do just that.

There may not have been the glamour attached to the deal that there was when names like Angel Di Maria or Radamel Falcao rocked up in Manchester, but that might be because this marquee move actually made sense, with Ruben Amorim and co forking out for a properly Premier League-proven figure.

Having netted 20 times in the top-flight last time out under Thomas Frank, there was a feeling that the Cameroonian was destined for the Champions League, with his former boss intent on taking him to Tottenham Hotspur.

The 26-year-old, to his credit, made it clear he only wanted United, patiently waiting out protracted negotiations to eventually seal his desired switch. Six goals in his first 12 games for the club have since followed.

Mbeumo is now the benchmark for further reinforcements to try and meet, with recent reports indicating that additional attacking recruits could potentially be in the works.

Man Utd's search for a forward

While the extent of his injury is yet to be known, the potential absence of Benjamin Sesko has brought the lack of genuine alternatives to the Slovenian into sharper focus, with Joshua Zirkzee the only other senior striker in Amorim’s ranks.

Sesko, signed for £74m from RB Leipzig, has made a promising albeit unspectacular start in English football with just two goals scored across league and cup, with questions to be asked over whether a more experienced marksman is still required.

According to reports in Spain, that very fact may well see United renew their interest in a certain Harry Kane in 2026, with the England skipper deemed to be a ‘proven solution’ to their long-standing centre-forward woes.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

As per the report, the likes of Barcelona and Chelsea are also paying close attention to the 32-year-old’s situation at Bayern Munich, with his existing deal in Bavaria set to expire in 2027.

Kane, the piece suggests, is keen to stay at the Allianz Arena, although the presence of a reported €65m (£57m) release clause in his current contract will certainly spark a raft of interest heading into the New Year.

Whether it is January or next summer, Kane – who was Erik ten Hag’s prime target back in 2023 – would still remain a significant coup if INEOS could pull it off.

Why Man Utd could land an even better signing than Mbeumo

2023 remains a frustrating window as far as United are concerned, with Ten Hag’s apparent interest in the likes of Kane and Declan Rice ultimately counting for little, as Mason Mount, Rasmus Hojlund and Andre Onana all arrived instead.

Hojlund, as those at Old Trafford are aware, has since proved to be something of a mixed bag, having scored just 26 goals in 95 games in all competitions, alongside a further four goals on loan at Napoli this season.

Since leaving Spurs for Bayern two years ago, meanwhile, Kane has gone on to amass a ridiculous haul of 108 goals in just 113 games for the Bundesliga giants, becoming the quickest player this century to reach triple figures for a team in one of Europe’s top five leagues.

Mbeumo might have stolen the show with a standout 2024/25 campaign for the Bees, but if it is true Premier League proven quality that you are after, then Kane is the man. 213 goals in England’s top-tier places him third on the all-time list.

Widely regarded as the best striker in the world, Kane has scored at least 17 league goals in every season stretching from 2014/15 to 2024/25. As for the new campaign, he already has 13 in ten in Germany’s top division. Mbeumo, for contrast, has five in 11.

Not your typical superstar, the former Spurs talisman is simply efficient to the extreme, with few players in the modern era having possessed such a ruthless, clinical streak in front of goal.

The beauty of Kane too, however, is that he isn’t just your average penalty box poacher. There are so many strings to his extraordinary bow.

Even deployed in almost a central midfield role at times under Vincent Kompany this season, namely in the win over Borussia Dortmund, England’s record scorer has that knack for being able to spray passes at will, having developed into an all-encompassing, playmaking number nine.

Such traits even led Tottenham great David Ginola to liken him to a legendary figure of the past back in 2022: “He is like the new Diego Maradona now. Long passes, short passes, he has it all.”

At 32, while he may be entering that ‘last dance’ territory, Amorim and United certainly shouldn’t turn their nose up at the chance to bring Kane back to England. There is Alan Shearer’s record to chase for him, after all.

Tottenham player ratings vs Slavia Prague: Mohammed Kudus and Xavi Simons star for Spurs in crucial Champions League victory

Tottenham kept their Champions League campaign on track with a resounding 3-0 win over Czech side Slavia Prague. Spurs deservedly took the lead through a David Zima own goal in the 26th minute in a frenetic first half that saw the visitors deploy a risky man-to-man setup in defence. The hosts made their dominance tell in the second half, as Xavi Simons and Mohamed Kudus both scored from the penalty spot.

Spurs should have taken the lead in the first minute, as Richarlison turned Wilson Odobert's cross towards goal. His effort was brilliantly denied, however, by the shoulder of Slavia goalkeeper Jindrich Stanek.

That early sight of goal was a sign of things to come in a frantic opening 45 minutes. The visitors opted to go one-on-one across the park, creating acres of space for Tottenham to exploit. While the runs of Kudus, Simons and Odobert created some threatening situations, Spurs were unable to create any clear cut chances. Slavia, meanwhile, did fashion some sights of goal of their own, as they got in behind Tottenham's high line, though Gugilelmo Vicario was able to rebuff the visitors' efforts with minimal fuss.

Spurs took the lead halfway through the first half when Cristian Romero flicked on a fizzing Pedro Porro corner. The Spurs' captain's header was on Zima in flash, forcing the centre-half to awkwardly deflect the ball into his own net past a helpless Stanek. While the Czech champions continued to track their opposite numbers in defence, leaving wide open spaces across the park, Tottenham struggled to create another meaningful chance before the half.

Those first-half frustrations were quickly dispelled, as Porro won a penalty after suffering a late challenge from David Moses. Kudus stepped up to fire his spot kick down the middle past the despairing outstretched foot of a diving Stanek.

As Slavia's legs began to tire, Spurs finally garnered a level of control. Mathys Tel and Pape Matar Sarr both could have scored shortly after entering the game. Eventually, the pressure told on the visitors once again, as Simons won another penalty when he was felled by Igboh Obu, and the Dutchman capped a fine performance as he snuck his penalty past the keeper into the bottom right corner of the net.

Tottenham's third home win of this Champions League season positions them to take a real shot at automatic qualification for the round of 16. Thomas Frank's side currently sit nihth in the table ahead of a tricky clash against Borussia Dortmund in the New Year.

    Goalkeeper & Defence

    Guiglielmo Vicario (7/10):

Made two comfortable parries on long-range efforts in the first half, as well as one sharper stop from close range. Some questionable decisions with his distribution.

    Pedro Porro (6/10):

Made up for some poor set-piece deliveries with the fizzing cross that brought about the own goal from Zima. Won the penalty to double the lead.

    Cristian Romero (7/10):

Won the header that forced the opening own goal. Delivered some raking passes behind Slavia's surprisingly high line. Forced into some timely interceptions to deny the occasional foray forward by the visitors.

    Micky van de Ven (6/10):

Got unnecessarily caught up in a personal battle with Slavia striker Chytil. A 13th-minute booking for a stray elbow rules him out of the Dortmund match in January.

    Djed Spence (6/10):

Given the license to step into midfield, popping up as a number 10 frequently.

    Midfield

    Joao Pahlinha (5/10):

Booked for a hard tackle that he would argue was fair. Always looking for a set to in the middle of the park, but did not provide much control in a wide open game.

    Archie Gray (6/10):

Broke up play well, could have done better to hold onto the ball once he won it.

    Xavi Simons (9/10):

Some tidy touches in tight spaces, always willing to pick up the ball and drive his side forward despite getting knocked about by the opposition. Dispatching his penalty was a just reward for a brave and polished performance.

    Attack

    Mohamed Kudus (8/10):

Given acres of space to run with the ball in a wide open game. Coolly sent his penalty down the middle as Stanek dove to his right.

    Richarlison (7/10):

Denied by an unbelievable save in the opening minutes. Bright and energetic without sacrificing control in his linkup play.

    Wilson Odobert (7/10):

Looked dangerous in the frenetic opening 10 minutes. Forced another top save out of the Czech 'keeper. Sometimes lacking with his final ball, but threatening throughout nonetheless.

    Subs & Manager

    Mathys Tel (6/10):

Had a good understanding with Spence that was cut short following Davies' introduction. Fashioned a chance for himself moments after coming on the pitch, but was denied by Stanek.

    Pape Matar Sarr (5/10):

Probably should have scored from Tel's rebounded shot.

    Ben Davies (5/10):

First minutes of the season for the long-serving Welshman. Hints of a handball in his own box, but not enough for the referee to penalise him. A comfortable reintroduction after a lengthy layoff.

    Randal Kolo Muani (6/10):

Cushioned touch with his chest set up Simons to win the second penalty.

    Lucas Bergvall (N/A):

Entered the game with the contest sewn up.

    Thomas Frank (6/10):

Any home win is a positive for the former Brentford boss. However, he will be worried about the chances his side gave up, and perhaps question if they should have scored more in such a wide open affair.
