DRS for wides? Chahal says yes; Taufel says no

Shastri wants questionable wide and no-ball calls to be directly dealt with by specialist TV umpires

Taufel: The definition of wides is somewhat opinion-based

Simon Taufel, the former ICC Elite Panel umpire, is not in favour of wides and height no-balls being referred as part of the two DRS reviews teams have in T20 cricket. Taufel’s opinion is in contrast to that of India and Rajasthan Royals legspinner Yuzvendra Chahal, who believes bowlers need a “bit more help” and that teams can “take a chance” by reviewing a wide call as it can potentially be pivotal.Talking with ESPNcricnfo, Chahal said he was at the receiving end of a potential wrong call on a wide this IPL during the April 10 league match against Lucknow Super Giants. Off the fourth delivery of his fourth over, the 18th of Super Giants’ innings, Chahal bowled a wide legbreak which pitched outside the off stump of Dushmantha Chameera. It was called a wide. Chahal disagreed and even had a word with the umpire.Related

Vettori and Tahir call for wides to come under DRS umbrella

Chahal did trap the Sri Lankan batter lbw next delivery, but said the extra ball cost him dearly as Marcus Stoinis lofted a six off the final ball of his spell. It nearly affected the match result, too, as Royals managed to win by just three runs.”Definitely. Even umpires are human beings. They can make a mistake, but teams can win by a single run many times,” Chahal told ESPNcricinfo when asked if would want wides referred as part of the two reviews teams had. “That happened with me against Lucknow when the umpire signalled a wide, but when I saw it on replay it was not a wide. But due to that I had to bowl an extra ball and I even got hit for a six off the last ball. It became a seven-ball over and they could score seven runs. As it is T20 is a batsman-dominated game, so if the bowlers get a bit more help, we can do that.”A few weeks later, though, Royals captain Sanju Samson was miffed in the match against Kolkata Knight Riders on May 2, when the on-field umpire Nitin Pandit signalled a wide on three occasions during the penultimate over of the game delivered by Prasidh Krishna. Samson pointed out to Pandit that the batter had moved laterally even before Krishna had released the ball.Sanju Samson has a word with the on-field umpire Nitin Pandit about a few close wide calls, against Kolkata Knight Riders•BCCI

Analysing the incident after the match, which Knight Riders won, ESPNcricinfo experts Daniel Vettori and Imran Tahir agreed that bowlers needed “avenues” to “rectify” umpiring errors through the means of the two reviews. This season, the IPL has added an extra review making it two per innings, something Chahal said was sufficient. “If you want to take a chance, take a chance, but we are giving you only two reviews. We are happy with that.”Taufel, though, remained concerned.”I’m really conscious around trying to turn the art of officiating into a science and seek perfection, whatever that looks like, with decision making,” Taufel told ESPNcricinfo in an interview to be published later this week. “So with wides for example, and here we’re going to, potentially according to you, or according to the player or the debate, take a wide call and throw that back to the third umpire for them to judge on something that might be marginal and is still a judgement call.”Judging a wide, Taufel pointed out, was never an easy job and there are no clear definitions in the laws and playing conditions.”Are you going to be able to overrule as a third umpire what a leg-side wide might look like? That’s a really interesting proposition to throw to a third umpire and say: I definitely think you got that wide wrong. If you look at a ball that cuts across a right-hander from a left-armer (fast bowler), that cuts the wide guideline – that’s a pretty big call to overrule. Can you clearly define for me what conclusive evidence is to overturn a wide both leg-side, off side and height?”And where do you then draw the line as to what a wide is? Because with wides, for example, you still got this opinion around: either could the batsman have played a shot? Has the batsman brought the ball sufficiently within reach? And you are putting them (under) a lot more stress and pressure around those definitions. Of course, if the ball has flicked the bat or the pad, and an umpire’s called a wide – yeah, that’s quite clearly an error. (But) I worry about where this is going to end up. Is everything that an umpire does likely to fall under the Decision Review System?”Former India head coach Ravi Shastri, though, said that questionable calls on wides and height no-balls should be directly dealt by specialist TV umpires and not via DRS review.”I agree totally, because that could be a game-changer,”Shastri told ESPNcricinfo. “The match could go into the last ball and 12-15 runs needed in the last over, a no-ball at that stage could make a lot of difference. You have the third umpire sitting there, you have the technology, use it.”Such an exercise could potentially stretch the match time, which Shastri agreed to, but was not fussed about. “You’d rather have a fair game. If it’s delayed by a minute, so be it. But rather have a fair game so there are no arguments later. Leave it to the third umpire, let him take the decision and let that be final.”Taufel, though, disapproved, saying getting the third umpire involved directly or via DRS, would mean the match would be slowed down and asked if the game was ready for such a “trade off”.”How much time are all these reviews going to take out of the playing time? I remember only last year, some commentators like the late Shane Warne were complaining about how an ODI finished 30 minutes past the scheduled cut off. You cannot have a quick game and also analyse every ball – there is always a trade off.”According to Taufel, bowlers and umpires would find it easier to adjudicate on wides better once the modified MCC Law becomes effective from October 1. Recently, the MCC said it was updating Law 22.1 governing wides to address the increasing challenge batters were posing by moving laterally across the crease.Taufel, who sits on the MCC Laws sub-committee, said the move was to “provide a bit more latitude for the bowler for it not to be called a wide if the batter is going to move their stance while the bowler is running up. And there is more clarity for the umpire about the batter moving in their stance.”

India could explore options as West Indies seek World Cup Super League gains in dead rubber

Both sides might be in a dilemma with the potential return of Shikhar Dhawan and Kieron Pollard in their respective XIs

Should India test their bench? Should West Indies rejig their batting order?

Big pictureSince the start of the ODI series against South Africa, India have been talking about building a side for the 2023 World Cup. One of their pain areas in the last couple of years has been the lack of a wicket-taking seamer in the powerplay and middle overs. They changed their strategy in the third ODI against South Africa by picking a tall, hit-the-deck bowler in Prasidh Krishna, and continued with it in the West Indies series too.The rewards are there to be seen. Hitting the short-of-a-good-length area, Prasidh picked up 2 for 29 in the first ODI and 4 for 12 in the second. One would think he has presented a strong enough case to be in the XI even when Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Shami return. In the batting department, Suryakumar Yadav seems to have made a middle-order spot his own. Now that India have won the series, they might consider trying out even more options in the third ODI.West Indies, on the other hand, have been let down by their batting. Before the series, their captain Kieron Pollard underlined the importance of playing out full 50 overs but his side failed to do that in the first two ODIs. On paper, West Indies have a long batting line-up – Odean Smith came in at No. 9 in the last game – but their batters don’t bat deep. Can the likes of Shai Hope, Darren Bravo and Nicholas Pooran take the responsibility and step up?Related

West Indies might have lost the series, but they would like to avoid a whitewash. In more tangible terms, there are ten World Cup Super League points at stake, and West Indies are currently ninth on that table in terms of percentage points.Form guideIndia WWLLL (last five completed ODIs, most recent first)
West Indies LLLLWIn the spotlightSince his last ODI hundred, Virat Kohli has made ten half-centuries in 20 innings in the format. However, in the last few weeks, the narrative has shifted from Kohli-not-getting-a-hundred to Kohli-needs-a-break. In the first ODI in this series, he played a strange four-ball knock where he seemed to be in a hurry. In the second, he was more measured but a loose shot outside off stump ended his stay on 18. On Friday, the question will once again be: will he get his 71st international hundred?West Indies will expect more from their opener Shai Hope•BCCI

Among those who have scored at least 1000 ODI runs for West Indies, no one averages higher than Shai Hope’s 51.13. He doesn’t have a great strike rate (74.70), but it’s his ability to play the anchor’s role that makes him a valuable asset in this West Indies line-up. He has an excellent record against spin too. With the team struggling to last 50 overs, West Indies will expect more from their opener. He wasn’t as tidy behind the stumps in the second ODI, so eyes will be on his wicketkeeping as well.Team newsAfter the second ODI, Rohit Sharma had said Shikhar Dhawan would be back for the final match. That means either Suryakumar or Deepak Hooda will have to sit out; this, despite Suryakumar doing well in his limited ODI appearances, and Hooda providing India with the sixth bowling option. Therefore, it is also difficult to see Shreyas Iyer getting a game, even though he is out of isolation now after testing positive for Covid-19. In the bowling department, India could play Kuldeep Yadav.India (probable): 1 Rohit Sharma (capt), 2 Shikhar Dhawan, 3 Virat Kohli, 4 KL Rahul, 5 Rishabh Pant (wk), 6 Deepak Hooda/Suryakumar Yadav, 7 Washington Sundar, 8 Shardul Thakur, 9 Mohammed Siraj, 10 Yuzvendra Chahal/Kuldeep Yadav, 11 Prasidh KrishnaSmith was impressive with both bat and ball in the second ODI. So if Pollard returns, West Indies will have a tough call to make. Can they retain Smith and leave out Bravo, who has had scores of 1, 18, 18, 0 and 2 in his last five innings?West Indies (probable): 1 Shai Hope (wk), 2 Brandon King, 3 Darren Bravo, 4 Shamarh Brooks, 5 Nicholas Pooran, 6 Kieron Pollard (capt), 7 Jason Holder, 8 Fabian Allen, 9 Akeal Hosein, 10 Alzarri Joseph, 11 Kemar RoachPitch and conditionsThe pitches so far have helped both seamers and spinners, and it will not be a surprise if that’s the case on Friday as well. The temperature is expected to hover around mid to late 20 degrees Celsius for the majority of the match. There was no dew during the second ODI, and it could stay that way for the third as well.Stats and trivia Prasidh has an economy rate of 2.15 in the series. Since 2020, Rahul has had an average of 67 and a strike rate of 109.23 in the middle order in ODIs. West Indies have failed to last full 50 overs in the last seven ODIs where they batted first.Quotes”I have been striving to get more consistent. When I started, I used to get excited and have too many emotions running through me. But over time, I have had my plans and I have been very clear on what I needed to work on.

He’s now worth more than Johnston: West Brom must rue ace leaving for £0

da dobrowin: West Bromwich Albion managed to add a cherry to the top of their cake right at the death of the transfer window, clinching a wonderful deal to win back former loan hero Mikey Johnston on a permanent basis on deadline day.

da wazamba: The now ex-Celtic winger would end up costing the Baggies a reasonable £3m, with Mason Holgate also joining on loan as the clock ticked down another eye-catching bit of business.

If he can reach the same heights he managed as a firm fan's favourite last season at the Hawthorns this campaign, Carlos Corberan's men could well be even more of a force to be reckoned with in the Championship, with the Baggies yet to taste defeat across their first four league clashes.

Johnston's time at West Brom

Johnston joined in January as a new loan recruit to help Corberan's side push to make the play-offs and stay there, with the Republic of Ireland international an instant hit in his fresh surroundings down the left flank.

The 25-year-old would twist and turn second-tier defences for fun, with a devastating finish usually finding the back of the net after a slaloming run forward, with Johnston helping himself to a stunning seven goals and two assists from 20 Baggies games.

Therefore, when an opportunity arose during the recently closed transfer window to try and snap Johnson back up, it was a chance West Brom couldn't say no to.

With Tom Fellows also operating as a creative machine down the right, with three assists already tallied up from his side's opening four Championship contests, both the homegrown West Brom menace and the £3m new boy could tear up the league together.

Mikey Johnston in action for Celtic in the Scottish Premiership

Away from the West Midlands outfit striking gold on deals in the here and now, they have been prone to making blunders in the transfer market too.

Sam Johnstone is one player who very much fits into that category.

Sam Johnstone's transfer value in 2024

Johnstone's recent £10m move to Wolverhampton Wanderers would have been particularly demoralising for West Brom, away from feeling overjoyed about Johnston's return, having waved goodbye to the new Wolves goalkeeper for nothing back in 2022.

Well known to keen football followers across the West Midlands – having lined up for Aston Villa as well as West Brom – Johnstone has now ticked off another big club from this area in the form of Gary O'Neil's Old Gold.

His best spell as a player to date arguably came at the Hawthorns, with Gary Lineker even labelling the former Manchester United youth prospect as "sensational" when he routinely starred for his former employers.

Proving himself to be a reliable shot-stopper across his playing days to date, with a large portion of his career clean sheets coming in the second tier, Corberan would love to be able to call upon Johnstone now in his current West Brom XI.

The Baggies wouldn't be consumed with so much regret when it comes to Johnstone if they did manage to sell him on for a hefty fee when they could, considering West Ham United in 2021 reportedly bid £10m for his services.

Instead of cashing in, however, West Brom pushed back a bid and ultimately rejected it, only for the four-time England international to walk away from the building on a free transfer, after his side finished in an unsatisfactory mid-table spot in the Championship at the end of the 2021-22 season.

Now, the ex-Red Devils youngster is worth £7m more than statement buy Johnston, as the Baggies remain a team in the second tier aiming for a top-flight return.

Corberan does have Alex Palmer at his disposal in-between the sticks now, who has only leaked two goals so far this campaign in the league, but those with connections to West Brom must still wonder if Johnstone's time with the club could have ended on a better note.

Arteta agrees new Arsenal contract as Tottenham game looms

Arteta signed a brand-new Arsenal contract till 2027 earlier this week, ending all doubts over the Spaniard's immediate future in the dugout, with his previous deal set to expire in 2025.

After putting pen to paper on his extension, Arteta expressed his delight and excitement over what lies ahead at Arsenal, as the Gunners seek to win their first Premier League title in over two decades.

“I feel extremely proud, very excited and am looking forward to what is coming next. I’m proud to be where I am and have the relationships that I have with everyone at the club," said Arteta on his new Arsenal contract.

“I feel extremely lucky to work every single day with good people and the ambition we have here. I feel very inspired, I feel challenged, I feel supported and I want to do much more than what we’ve already done together.

“Together with the players and everyone at the club, we are looking forward to the coming years, with our supporters, who have emotionally transformed the club and the team. Our supporters have transformed individuals and we are different now. You can tell that we are different and for me, that is down to them. We look forward to continuing the journey together.”

Arteta's fresh terms include a bumper pay rise to around £288,000-per-week, making him one of the best-paid managers in the Premier League behind Man City boss Pep Guardiola, but the tactician has little time to celebrate.

Arsenal are preparing for a crucial North London Derby against Tottenham this Sunday, where they're set to be without a host of key players. Declan Rice will miss the clash through suspension, while Mikel Merino is sidelined with a shoulder fracture.

It was the consensus that club captain Martin Odegaard's ankle injury would have him sidelined for the next few weeks, but Arteta has since confirmed in his Arsenal press conference that won't be the case, and he could even feature in the derby.

Adrien Rabiot makes one Arsenal demand after reaching out for talks

Despite the good news about Odegaard, their series of midfield absences still pose a serious threat to the Gunners. However, amid these tactical conundrums for Arteta, it is believed illustrious free agent midfielder Adrien Rabiot has approached them for talks.

The former Juventus and Paris-Saint Germain star would theoretically be a good stand-in for Odegaard, and at zero cost following his exit from Turin in the summer. Rabiot featured for France at Euro 2024 and made 31 Serie A appearances for Juve last season, scoring five and assisting three, so he remains a player of real quality despite being released.

Reports in the last week claim that Rabiot's contacted Arsenal over joining them via his representatives, and GiveMeSport have an update on the matter.

Adrien Rabiot for France.

The outlet writes Arsenal are informed that Rabiot's demanding £220,000-per-week to join them or other suitors, with this one demand potentially stopping a Premier League move from coming to fruition.

This salary would make the 29-year-old one of Arsenal's highest-earners, so a Bosman deal for the Frenchman won't come cheap in that regard. His market value is still around £30 million (Transfermarkt), demonstrating Rabiot's pedigree, and he's been called an "extraordinary" player by Juve legend David Trezeguet.

Phil Salt savours Barbados homecoming despite England defeat

Fifty on T20I debut as new boy embraces England’s winning mentality

Phil Salt says there was plenty for him to savour despite finishing on the wrong end of a high-scoring defeat in the third T20I in Barbados, after marking his debut in the format with a hard-hitting half-century, on the island where he spent six of his formative years.Salt’s 57 from 24 balls carried England’s challenge almost as deep as West Indies’ own run-chase had gone in their one-run defeat on Sunday, particularly when he struck consecutive sixes in Romario Shepherd’s final over, to briefly keep pace with a requirement that had spiralled to 36 runs from the six remaining deliveries. However, his efforts – coupled with Tom Banton’s earlier score of 73 from 39 balls – were unable to match Rovman Powell’s exceptional 51-ball hundred, after he and Nicholas Pooran (70 from 43) had added 122 for the third wicket to lift West Indies to an imposing 224 for 5, their highest total against England, and their third-highest of all time.Even so, having lived in Barbados for six years from the ages of nine to 15, and having watched a number of England’s matches at Bridgetown in that time – including their T20 World Cup final win over Australia in 2010 – he admitted the feeling of being the other side of the fence on this occasion had been a memorable one.”It was very cool to play here, it’s a ground that I’ve watched England play on so many times,” Salt said. “I’ve watched them win a World Cup here and I’ve seen almost every single series I could when they were over here. To make my debut on the ground is incredible.”I know it’s not capacity, but the atmosphere is always good in this part of the world,” Salt added, with 50% crowds at this series due to Covid protocols. “Bajans love their cricket and love supporting the West Indies. And the English are exactly the same, so that’s always going to make for a good atmosphere.”Salt made an emergency England debut in last summer’s ODI series against Pakistan, opening the batting under the captaincy of Ben Stokes after England’s original squad had been sidelined by a Covid outbreak. And there was similar upheaval in the ranks on this occasion, with Moeen Ali taking charge of an England team with five changes, including two other debutants in George Garton and Harry Brook, after Eoin Morgan and Sam Billings were both ruled out.”I knew [Wednesday] morning around midday that I was in,” Salt said, after Billings – who had completed a 15,000km, four-flight journey from Hobart to Bridgetown prior to the first match – was omitted. “I think Bilbo didn’t pull up the greatest, recovery-wise, after the last couple of games. So that’s when I knew.”Salt had an unfamiliar position in the side too, coming in at No. 6 instead of opening – the first time he had batted that low in a T20 game. But, given his reputation as a player who can go full-throttle from the first ball, Salt said he had not been daunted by the task at hand, adding that the can-do mentality of Eoin Morgan’s No.1-ranked squad had dictated his approach from the outset.Related

Asked what was on his mind as he arrived at the crease at 107 for 4 in the 12th over, he said: “Winning the game. It’s very, very clear when you come into this group, the mentality you need to have. Winning the game was the only thing on my mind at the time.”The role I had is one I enjoy doing,” he added. “The game is always in front of you when you come in and are chasing, you know exactly what you need to do.”Salt had to wait nearly ten minutes to face his first delivery after arriving at the non-striker’s end, but nearly reached the boundary with his first shot through midwicket, and struck three fours and five sixes all told.”It’s a skill that not many guys have so if you can be good at that, it’s definitely a big weapon in your armoury,” he said of his hitting ability. “Sometimes you get tied up a bit up top when you open, when the field’s up, but with everyone back and the scoreboard looking the way it was, it was very clear what I needed to do.”

After trumping New Zealand, young Darcie Brown gung-ho about 'awesome challenge' against West Indies

But she isn’t assured of a place in Australia’s starting XI with Meg Lanning likely to choose between her and a spinner at Basin Reserve

Fresh from a stunning 3 for 22 that destroyed the New Zealand top order and led Australia to a third win on the spin, teenage quick Darcie Brown is keyed up for the next World Cup outing, against West Indies on Tuesday.Brown was ruthless against New Zealand on Sunday, taking the wickets of Suzie Bates, Amelia Kerr and Frances Mackay in a match-defining spell. Her favourite wicket was that of Kerr, who she had caught in the slips courtesy an athletic leap from Beth Mooney. “Moons’ catch was pretty special. It was a pretty big screamer and the girls were up and about,” Brown said of the moment.Related

Brown’s last wicket left New Zealand 35 for 5 and Australia eventually scripted to a 141-run win – their second-biggest-ever win margin in ODIs over New Zealand. It was a fine return from Brown, especially given her poor none for 40 off six overs against England that led to her sitting out Australia’s win over Pakistan.”During the Pakistan match, I had a bit of a bowl, a bit of a trundle with Ben Sawyer, our bowling coach,” she said. “He helped me with a few tips and cues to bowl to try and go a bit fuller, and, I guess, swing it a bit more… that put me in good stead for that New Zealand match.”And her team-mates were glowing in their reviews. “I don’t think I’ve ever seen Darce bowl that well,” Ash Gardner said, while Ellyse Perry said Brown did “amazingly well”.Even Brown was surprised. “I felt like I was in pretty good control with the ball. I don’t usually feel like that,” she said. “It’s probably up there with how I felt with control and rhythm and, I guess, pace.”Next up are West Indies, who have beaten New Zealand and England, but arrive at Basin Reserve off a big loss to India.”It’d be an awesome challenge. We played against them in a practice match, and [Deandra Dottin] whacked me around a little bit,” she said. However, Brown’s selection isn’t assured, given her age – 19 – and the riches available to captain Meg Lanning. Against New Zealand, the skipper made the tough call to leave out the world’s No. 1-ranked ODI bowler Jess Jonassen in favour of pace.”We had a really tough selection… JJ missed out and she’s a world-class bowler, and has done extremely well for us for a long time,” Lanning said. “We felt that extra pace option was the way to go. It worked today but on another day it might not.”Brown said she would understand whichever way the call went. “I want to play every single game,” she said. “But with the path of young fast bowlers there’s been a fair few injuries. When management say I need a rest you’ve just got to trust them and know it’s in your best interest.”
