Crystal Palace identify 20 y/o rising star as long-term Mateta replacement

da bwin: Crystal Palace have added a 20-year-old forward who is very similar to Brighton’s Danny Welbeck at the top of their list of replacements for striker Jean-Philippe Mateta, according to a recent report.

da realbet: The Eagles have enjoyed a very good last week or so, as they beat Tottenham, knocked Aston Villa out of the Carabao Cup and picked up a point in a difficult game against Wolves on Saturday, results which are likely to have eased the pressure on Oliver Glasner after what was a poor start to the campaign.

After their win against Villa in midweek, Palace suffered several blows as Glasner revealed that Eberechi Eze, Adam Wharton, and Jefferson Lerma were all injured and are going to be out until after the November international break.

But in a further blow, the Austrian revealed ahead of his side’s game against Wolves that Wharton is now set for surgery and will be out for at least a month, as he’s had to manage an injury all of this season. That means the Englishman could miss as many as five Premier League games.

This news comes after Palace were linked with a move for midfielder Raphael Onyedika. The 23-year-old currently plays for Club Brugge, and his performances in Belgium as well as in Europe have caught the attention of the Eagles. The Belgian side are open to a sale in January, as they look for around £25 million, and the news of Wharton’s ongoing injury could intensify Palace’s interest in the player.

But Onyedika is not the only player that the Premier League side are keeping their eyes on, as they also have a forward in mind as a possible replacement for Jean-Philippe Mateta, who has been linked with an exit at times in the last year.

Crystal Palace identify possible long-term Mateta replacement

According to The Sun, Crystal Palace have placed Oumar Diakite at the top of their list for replacements for Mateta. The 20-year-old currently plays for French side Reims and has done so since the summer of 2023, when he joined from Red Bull Salzburg.

This report states that the South London side have been watching the Ivory Coast international for a few months now, and he could now be moved on by the French side, despite his contract running until the summer of 2028.

Diakite played 28 times in Ligue 1 last season, during which he scored five goals and recorded one assist, and he already has two goals to his name this season in nine league appearances. The forward hasn’t played in the Premier League of course, but when looking at players who compare, Brighton’s Danny Welbeck ranks second by statistical profile.

Palace want to extend Mateta’s stay at Selhurst Park, but with a deal still not agreed, they want to be at the front of the queue for Diakite should Mateta decide to leave. Mateta’s form towards the end of last season and then his performances in the Olympics for France have put him on the radar of a few clubs, with Liverpool linked with a move for the striker at the end of last month.

Mitchell Starc won't risk Test chances by making quick return in Sri Lanka

The Australia fast bowler with a finger injury wants to play a part in the ongoing ODI series, but not at the cost of his Test place

Australian quick Mitchell Starc is still holding out hope of featuring in the ODI series against Sri Lanka, but only if it doesn’t compromise his chances of playing in the Tests.Starc sliced open his left index finger on his shoe spike during his follow through in the T20I series opener last week. The 32-year-old has been able to bowl full steam at training in recent days, but ICC rules preventing bowlers from using tape on their fingers means Starc hasn’t been able to feature in games.Starc had the stitches removed on Thursday, but just how well his finger recovers from this point on will determine whether he will be fit for game three of the ODI series against Sri Lanka on Sunday. He is hopeful of playing at least some part in the five-match series, but only if it won’t compromise his chances of featuring in the two Tests that follow.”I’m still holding onto hope that I will,” Starc said of his chances of featuring in the ODI series. “There’s still a fair bit of glue still in the wound. That will start to dissolve a bit more in the next couple of days. Once we get to Colombo we’ll have a look at it again and see where it’s at.”I’m still training. It’s just a matter of where the wound is at, and obviously with one eye on the Test series as well and not compromising that.”Starc said it was frustrating to feel super fit and still unable to play.”I feel really good with the ball in hand,” he said. “I’ve had to bowl at training with the tape on, and it’s purely that I can’t do that in the fixture due to the ICC rules which is why I’m not playing.”If it’s game three, four, or five [that I play], I’m not sure yet. We’re just making sure we’re not compromising the Test series [which starts on June 29].”Australia have been riddled by injuries on the tour to Sri Lanka. Marcus Stoinis (side strain), Sean Abbott (finger) and Kane Richardson (hamstring) will play no further part, while Ashton Agar (side strain), Starc and Mitchell Marsh (hamstring) have also been injured. Agar is out of the remainder of the ODI series but hopeful of being fit in time for the second Test.Star batter Steven Smith sent a scare through the camp in Friday’s 26-run ODI loss when he pulled up lame while sprinting for a second run. Although he was able to play on after receiving strapping on his upper left leg, he will be assessed over the coming days.”I don’t know how sore he is or how much of a niggle he might be,” Starc said. “After he got the strapping he played a pretty nice drive through mid-wicket, so I’m sure he’ll be fine to play the next game.”

Afghanistan are on the rise, despite playing so little international cricket, but Bangladesh T20 coach Sriram expects his team to “go out there” and “do the job”

Rashid Khan believes that Afghanistan’s relatively younger side enjoying T20s is making a big difference. Their eight-wicket win over Sri Lanka in the Asia Cup opener sent out a warning to the rest of the participants that when they combine well as a team, they can be quite dangerous.Rashid, regarded among T20’s elite, said that their contest against Bangladesh on Tuesday will tilt towards the side that handles the pressure better, but stressed on how well Afghanistan have prepared ahead of this tournament.Related

President in control, cricket in chaos – the Bangladesh story

Despite Taliban, Afghanistan is living and loving its cricket

“We have more youngsters now than before,” Rashid said. “Most of the guys enjoy this short format. We are playing in Sharjah after a long time, but at the same time, our cricket remains the same. We know our roles. We are playing Bangladesh away for the first time since Dehradun, so it has been four years. At the same time, whoever plays better cricket and controls their nerve in the big game, they will do the best. As a team, we will prepare well and go with a fresh mind and enjoy the cricket.”Afghanistan are benefiting from playing a lot of franchise T20 over the last few years. Indeed, many of the capped and uncapped Afghan players are in high demand in most of the leagues. Rashid believes that they are making up for the lack of international cricket with franchise exposure.”We don’t play a lot of longer format cricket,” he said. “It is about the FTP, and not in the players’ hands. We want to play a lot of international cricket, so that our youngsters can understand the environment to improve their skills. Since we play a lot of international leagues, it gives us the opportunity to learn from the best players. We bring that experience to the international team. We share that with the rest of the team.”Specially in the batting department it helps if we play more international leagues. If there’s international duty, you have to be present. It is always first priority. But we are hopeful of playing more international games in the coming years.”Afghanistan rolled Sri Lanka over to kick off the Asia Cup•AFP via Getty Images

Meanwhile, Bangladesh have much to prove after going down to ODI and T20I series defeats in Zimbabwe recently. Even so, Rashid knows not to take them lightly, like his Sri Lankan counterpart Dasun Shanaka who termed Bangladesh as a “weaker opponent” to Afghanistan.”It will be different condition in Sharjah tomorrow,” he said. “Shakib [Al Hasan] is the skipper, the most experienced player in the side. It makes a huge difference. But we think about our process. It is in the players’ mind. We know our roles and jobs tomorrow. We don’t think about the result, whether we beat them or not.”We don’t think opposition is weak or strong. You can’t say that in cricket. It is something that you never handle the result of the game. For us, every opposition is tough. We have to take the opposition seriously, and be well prepared. If we are playing Hong Kong or India tomorrow, we will have the same preparation.”Bangladesh have appointed Sridharan Sriram as a technical consultant, essentially their T20 head coach for the next three months, while Shakib, despite a sponsorship controversy, was made the new captain.Sriram, who only joined the team a few days before their departure from Dhaka, said that proper communication and role clarity are some of the first things he has tried to establish with the team.”I think it is about role clarity,” he said. “One thing we have made an effort to do is, be as clear in communication as possible to what to expect from everyone. Players are aware of their roles. Once we get there, we will assess conditions and probably take the right call.”We are clear about our game style. What we want to play. I have played in Sharjah so many times. It is good that we didn’t practice there. Practice facilities are not great in Sharjah. We have had very good facilities here, so we are happy with what we got.”Bangladesh go into the Asia Cup having lost series to West Indies and Zimbabwe, and looking confused in many aspects of the game. But Sriram is hopeful that with the right encouragement, things can change.”We have to give them the freedom to play,” he said. “Ability-wise there’s no doubt that Bangladesh has the ability to do it. But it is about going out there, and getting the confidence. Keep expressing themselves, keep doing the job.”

However, on the pitch, things aren’t going to plan for Lopetegui, who has won just one of his first five Premier League games incharge of the Irons. Four points from a possible 15 sees the Hammers in the bottom half of the table, with improvements clearly needed over the coming months.

Talking after the 3-0 defeat to Chelsea last time out in the league, Lopetegui said: “The message for supporters is first to say we are sorry about today. We had a big expectation today, and we are going to do all that we can to do our best, to work more and to change things, for sure, because the season is going to be very, very long, very long and I am sure that this team is going to change a lot of things. But okay, I think it’s a moment to work, to not talk a lot, and to look forward.”

Away from the pitch and behind the scenes, despite the transfer window shutting, West Ham have still been linked with more signings, using the free agent market to bolster Lopetegui’s defensive options.

The likes of Joel Matip has been a mooted target, with rumours earlier this month suggesting that West Ham had offered the former Liverpool defender a two-year deal. John Egan was another linked with a free switch to the London Stadium but has since moved to Burnley, and by the looks of things, a new defensive target has emerged on Steidten’s radar.

West Ham leading race to sign international defender

According to HITC, West Ham are leading the race to sign Richard King from Cavalier FC, who are the Jamaican Premier League champions for 2023/24.

The 22-year-old defender already knows West Ham forward Antonio due to playing alongside each other for the Jamaican national side, with the Irons in pole position to secure his services.

Aston Villa, Brighton & Hove Albion and Newcastle United are also name-checked with an interest in King, who stands at 6ft 1, but the report states that they are behind West Ham in the transfer race.

King has won 19 caps for his country and has played just under 90 games at club level. He could be one name to keep an eye on as we head into 2025, potentially being seen as competition for the likes of Max Kilman, Jean-Clair Todibo and Konstantinos Mavropanos.

James Anderson, Stuart Broad 'available for selection', says new England director Rob Key

Senior bowlers backed for recall after new captain Ben Stokes calls for “best team”

James Anderson and Stuart Broad will be considered “available for selection” for the first Test of the summer, against New Zealand at Lord’s on June 2, according to Rob Key, the new director of the England men’s team, following their controversial omissions from the recent tour of the Caribbean.Despite their combined haul of 1177 Test wickets, the futures of both Anderson, 39, and Broad, 35, had been up in the air ever since England’s 4-0 Ashes loss, especially in light of Joe Root’s comments about the “positive” team environment that a new-look squad had fostered during their subsequent 1-0 series loss in the Caribbean. However, Key – speaking for the first time in his new role at a press conference at Lord’s – said that he had taken soundings from Root’s newly appointed successor, Ben Stokes, with both men agreeing that if Anderson and Broad are fit and in form come the start of the international season, then they will be back in the frame.Related

ECB forced to restart search for new chairman; interim O'Brien steps down

Ben Stokes named England men's Test captain

“Before I was announced in this job, I rang Jimmy and Broady and said ‘For my money, you boys are available for selection for the first Test of the summer’,” Key told the BBC. “That’s fine, but I’m the managing director. What they want is the captain to go with that. One of the first things Ben Stokes said was ‘Jimmy and Broady are coming back’ and I agree. It might’ve been a different story had we not agreed. But it wasn’t up for debate.”Broad returned to action for the first time this season in Nottinghamshire’s ongoing LV= Insurance Championship fixture at Trent Bridge, claiming a wicket in his third over as Worcestershire were bowled out for 159 on the opening day. Anderson, meanwhile, took two early wickets for Lancashire against Hampshire at the Ageas Bowl, having found his groove during an innings win over Gloucestershire at Old Trafford last week.”They’ve got their plans in place,” Key added. “We don’t need to tell Jimmy and Broady what they need to do, or how they need to prepare for a Test match. If they don’t know now, no one will. And they’ve got to be right and up for selection for that first Test. And I don’t see any reason why they wouldn’t and they got a big part to play.”Speaking in the wake of his five-wicket haul at Sydney during the Ashes, Broad had voiced his frustration with the previous England regime’s tendency to plan for future engagements rather than focusing on the here-and-now – an issue about which he had been similarly outspoken in a Sky Sports interview after being dropped for the first Test of the 2020 home summer. And though Key insisted he “could not predict the future”, as regards the longevity of England’s senior pairing, he said he saw no reason to maintain the team’s recent policy of rest-and-rotation, especially now that the Covid restrictions that have dominated the last two years are being rolled back.”We’ll just see how they go,” Key said. “If they play the first Test match and if they’re bowling really well, and England are doing well, then they might play the next, and then on to the next. If they’re tired, then someone else can come in. I don’t think we have to overthink all this stuff. But what we have to do is be flexible on how we do it.Stuart Broad celebrates a wicket on his first appearance of the season•Getty Images

“They are not multi-format cricketers at the moment. With someone like Jofra Archer, it might be a bit different. When he comes back fit, there will be times where it’ll be very obvious when we want our absolute best out there, and there might be a white-ball series that we can sacrifice a bit. And that, actually, isn’t a bad thing because some other players can come in to prolong the success of the white-ball team. I just don’t think we have to overthink it.”Although the timeframes are tight, with just over a month to go until the first Test against New Zealand, Key added that he was “optimistic” that a new head coach can be appointed before the series gets underway. Simon Katich is believed to be among the frontrunners, with Graham Ford and Gary Kirsten also in consideration, but with Stokes – “the best person to lead England forward” – now installed as captain, Key is confident that the team’s new framework will take shape quickly.”There’s some good names coming in from English cricket and world cricket,” he said. “I’m trying to find out about the ones I might not know so much about. A lot of it comes not from sitting across a room asking him what sort of coach are you, but actually asking people that have worked with him.”In terms of team selection, however, Key is currently less clear about the process going forward. Though he is keen to restore the post of national selector – a role previously held by his former Kent team-mate Ed Smith until he was made redundant last year – he admitted he was unsure who to place at the helm of a network that now encompasses a scouting network and a team of data analysts, as well as the as-yet-unknown red- and white-ball head coaches.”It’s a very, very important job and we won’t rush to get that person in place,” Key said. “Until then, I’m pretty happy with the process that we’ll have in place, with the people that are already involved in selection. If you need someone to point the gun at, you can point it at me, it doesn’t really bother me. But we’ll come up with the best team that we possibly can to win the Test match, and hopefully not make bad decisions.”
