Heinrich Klaasen steps up with bat to repay Mark Boucher's faith

Centurion says he can’t describe the “pure emotion” of scoring his first hundred for South Africa

Heinrich Klaasen sets off for a single to bring up his maiden hundred•Associated Press

It was here at Boland Park that Heinrich Klaasen endured one of the worst days of his career. Two months ago, on the morning of December 16, he found out that he had been dropped from the South Africa Test squad ahead of the series against England after a torrid debut in Ranchi on their trip to India in September. That evening, the Mzansi Super League franchise he captains, the Tshwane Spartans, lost the tournament final to the Paarl Rocks.Klaasen, who is not the most expressive character, cut a grim figure when he was asked about the compounding disappointments. “It’s not been a great week for me, but that’s part of the job,” he said then. “I need to go back and perform. I want to play Test cricket but there’s a lot of work that I have to do and put numbers on the board.”Now, a little more than two months later, it’s was at Boland Park that Klaasen enjoyed one of the best days of his career with his maiden ODI hundred in his 15th match. Asked whether he could describe the feeling when the milestone came up, Klaasen shook his head and grinned. “No I can’t,” he said. “It’s difficult to put in words. It’s just pure emotion that came out.”Measured, pure emotion. Klaasen’s celebrations, whether muted by the heat and smoke that hung in the air or by the knowledge that South Africa still needed a few more runs to get themselves into a properly dominant position, were quiet by most maiden hundred standards. There was no leap or air punch but a bat raise and a brief conversation with the heavens and then he was back in the zone, and continued to add to the total.Klaasen finished on 123 not out, and his partnership with David Miller was worth half the final score. Crucially, it took the pressure off Quinton de Kock, who has been South Africa’s top-scorer in five out of the last six series and has come to be relied upon to do the bulk of the line-up’s work. “It’s not the Quinton de Kock show,” Klaasen said.”He is an incredible player but we can’t put all the pressure on them. The coach has been asking for someone else step up. Quinton can’t bat for 50 overs on his own.”South Africa’s coach, Mark Boucher, was also Klaasen’s coach at the Titans for the past three seasons and it was under Boucher that Klaasen was earmarked as an international. He traveled with the Test squad on a tour to New Zealand in 2017, but only made his Test debut two years later, in India. The inevitable consequence of being on tour but not on the field was that Klaasen didn’t play a lot and when he was left out of the Test squad to face England at home, he was given the opportunity to put that right. “The selectors told me to go back to franchise and play more consistency; to spend a lot of time in the middle,” he said.Though he has not hit the lights out, his numbers are steady. In the first-class competition, Klaasen collected 413 runs from five matches at an average of 51.62, which included four fifties. He has 162 runs from four one-day cup matches at 40.50, with one fifty. And then he got the call-up for the white-ball leg of the England series and made a big impression with 66 at his home ground, Centurion, to set South Africa up for a score of 222 for 6. That they couldn’t defend it was not Klaasen’s concern. He did his bit.A hip injury prevented him from continuing to do it for South Africa’s next two T20 matches, but he was back in the XI as soon as he was fit, displacing allrounder Jon-Jon Smuts. That too tells a story. Instead of opt for a two-in-one player, South Africa have chosen Klaasen, demonstrating the faith Boucher has put in him. “It’s always good to know that your coach backs you,” he said. “We have got a good relationship, which changed in the last couple of months before he came up.”Boucher’s promotion meant Klaasen lost a mentor of sorts but he has been working with other former internationals like Albie Morkel and Jacques Rudolph and has tried to model himself on one of his franchise team-mates, Dean Elgar – specifically an innings for the Titans against the Cobras earlier this month, when Elgar took the team from 50 for 2 to 302 for 4. Klaasen also had assurance from Boucher that he was doing the right thing on a surface where run-scoring was tough.”The message came out from from the coach to say, ‘You are doing a good job,'” Klaasen said. “He said if we go three or four an over for the next 15 overs, he was happy. We didn’t have to worry about trying too many things, just take the low risk option.”In doing that, Klaasen made it difficult for Australia to tie him down, according to their captain, Aaron Finch. “He picked his moments in when to attack the bowlers. They rotated, they ran hard, that was a quality knock.” And that’s high praise as any Klaasen could expect to get in Paarl.

Meet Arsenal’s next Declan Rice who once sparked a training ground fight

da casino: As the rain hammered down upon the Emirates Stadium turf on Tuesday night and Arsenal fans grew restless over their Champions League hopes, there was one man calmer than anyone else during the shoot-out.

da dobrowin: So he should have been after being signed for a £105m transfer fee last summer. Up stepped Declan Rice. This was his first penalty for the club by the way, but the midfielder stroked it home like, dare we say, James Ward-Prowse.

The latter has been known as a set piece specialist throughout his career and incidentally was tasked with replacing Rice at West Ham, but it is the Arsenal star who is beginning to show his colours in that aspect of the game too.

The Gunners didn't just have their record buy to thank against Porto a few days ago, despite his cool and composed penalty but it was another radiant display from a player who just seems to be getting better and better.

Has £105m ever looked like a bargain? In the case of Rice, it certainly seems that way.

Declan Rice's season in numbers

What can you say about the England international that hasn't already been said? Very little. He is one of the most elite midfielders in the game and has taken Arsenal to a brand new level this term.

Arsenal players Bukayo Saka and Declan Rice

With Thomas Partey injured and Jorginho not in the frame regularly at the beginning of the season he was tasked with playing as a lone holding midfielder. This didn't faze the 25-year-old who was just been magnificent in such a role.

Among positionally similar players in the division, Rice ranks among the best 6% for progressive passes per 90 minutes, the top 4% for total carrying distance and the best 13% for percentage of dribblers tackled.

For want of a better word, the former West Ham man is a machine. He strides forward with immense purpose, can pick out a pass and pivotally for a player in his position, breaks up the play.

However, in 2024 Rice has stepped up in other ways. He's become one of Arsenal's main set-piece takers, delivering corners from the left-hand side and free-kicks from either side. As such, he now has seven assists for the club, five of which have come this calendar year.

With Jorginho alongside him, he's been granted the license to play further forward and as a result, has now scored three goals in his last five matches. Such form is the most prolific of Rice's career and it only goes to show the immense qualities at his disposal. On the evidence of the above, the summer signing has it all.

Rice could well go on to become a legend in north London and won't be dislodged anytime soon, but the Gunners do have a similar sort of player lingering in the Hale End setup.

Arsenal's next Declan Rice

The name we should be focusing our attention on is 20-year-old midfielder Jack Henry-Francis.

The youngster isn't a player who's getting the same attention as a certain Ethan Nwaneri, or Charlie Patino for that matter but he is clearly a player that Arsenal rates highly.

Saliba 2.0 & £80m striker: Arsenal's dazzling XI once Nwaneri becomes a regular

The future looks bright at the Emirates.

ByJack Salveson Holmes Feb 18, 2024

Called up to train with the first team as early as 17-years-old, the London-born Irish youth international has qualities that make him an enticing project for the coaching staff at London Colney. Interesting to note is that one appearance alongside the senior team sparked a fight caught on camera by the All or Nothing team filming the club's Amazon Prime documentary.

Alexandre Lacazette launched a tackle on the then-teenager which right-back Cedric didn't take much of a liking to, sparking quite the scuffle.

More importantly, though, is what makes him like Rice. Well, the club's official website describes him as not only an "aggressive and tenacious tackler" but a "box-to-box energetic midfielder". That could quite aptly describe Arsenal's record signing too.

The trouble is that there has been a stark lack of opportunities to gain senior minutes. Henry-Francis made his first-team bow, although not in a competitive sense, against Hibernian in pre-season ahead of the 2021/22 campaign.

Since then, he has not been included in a first-team squad, not even for a cup game. That perhaps doesn't bode quite well for making a breakthrough but he has been notably impressive in 2023/24 for the U23s.

The young midfielder has shown he can pop up with attacking contributions, like Rice, scoring three goals and supplying two assists. Two of those involvements came against Exeter City in the EFL Trophy.

During that game, Henry-Francis supplied three key passes as a marker of his creativity while making four tackles and winning seven duels to outline his physicality and defensive confidence.

A loan spell would be of great benefit next season if he's to take his game to the next level. As seen against Exeter, he can clearly do it against Football League opposition.

Pakistan in a firefight as Bangladesh push for historic series win

Rain in Rawalpindi may impact the Test as well with the visitors leading 1-0

Big picture: Pakistan in perilPakistan cricket, right now, isn’t exactly going through a golden era, but few expected the bloody nose Bangladesh gave them last week. For much of that Test match, Pakistan’s chief frustration appeared to be they would end up with a draw, a draw would inhibit their efforts, which captain Shan Masood bullishly talked up in the build-up, at having a real crack at reaching the World Test Championship (WTC) final. Five days later, Pakistan would lose, and to add insult to injury, have half-a-dozen points docked for slow over rates, placing them ever so close to the bottom of the table. A home series defeat to Bangladesh would bring its own ignominy, which has little to do with whether they’re in the race to prove themselves the best Test side in the world. Bangladesh had, until last week, won just six away Tests in a quarter century of being Full Members, two against an enfeebled West Indies in 2009, and another two against Zimbabwe.Related

Shaheen Afridi left out of second Test against Bangladesh

Masood suddenly finds himself in a battle for the captaincy so soon after assuming it, having lost each of the four Tests he’s been in charge. While flashes of quality against Australia over the winter meant the overall result could potentially be overlooked in favour of a long-term plan, such forgiveness will not come if Pakistan drop a home series against Bangladesh. With a busy time ahead that includes the sterner challenges of England and South Africa, ensuring they avoid handing this Test trophy over next week remains the bare minimum for this red-ball side to retain credibility with its supporters.Bangladesh played the Rawalpindi Test at their own pace and won•Associated Press

That task is complicated by the weather in Rawalpindi once more. Rain forced the cancellation of practice sessions on the eve of the game, with more forecast for the first day. It has led Pakistan to hesitate before officially confirming a spinner for the Test, naming a 12-man squad with Abrar Ahmed and Mir Hamza both in contention. Masood pointed out Pakistan were the more proactive side last week, and with Bangladesh only needing a draw, his side will have to find a way to repeat that while also ensuring they get a better result. And what, really, can you say about the position Bangladesh have created for themselves? Najmul Hossain Shanto’s side outplayed as well as outthought the hosts, doing the basics right. Like making sure they had spinners in case they came in handy on the final day, which they did. Or not leaving runs out by declaring early owing to ultimately unrealised concerns it might rain, which it did not. They let Pakistan’s wobbles do the rest, and the ten-wicket win was as clinical as it was merited. There are more important things going on back home, but the uncomplicated joy of last week was as welcome as it was unexpected. This, remember, is not a vintage Bangladesh side, and did not come in saddled with high expectations. They came in last week, saw an opponent making unforced errors and didn’t interrupt them. They didn’t get sucked into playing fashionably aggressive cricket, or bullied into doing anything they didn’t want to do. They had no qualms about batting at under three runs an over for large parts of the first innings, and when Pakistan turned to declaration bowling, they simply didn’t decare. It secured Bangladesh arguably their greatest Test win, but they will know they need to hold off on wild celebrations for now. With one Test on the horizon and no clear signs Pakistan will be able to produce the pitch they want, all Bangladesh may need to do is pick up where they left off in the first Test. Pakistan must make all the moves, and as Bangladesh demonstrated, they are not going to be displaced too easily.Babar Azam’s recent form has been a big concern for Pakistan•Associated Press

Form guidePakistan: LLLLW (last five completed matches, most recent first) Bangladesh: WLLLWIn the spotlight: Babar Azam and Mushfiqur RahimBabar Azam’s slump aligning perfectly with the team’s nosediving Test form has been aggravating. Pakistan are used to dry patches and players out of form, but it isn’t quite obvious why this generation’s best batter is now struggling to achieve the big scores that came so easily to him. There isn’t a particular type of bowling or kind of shot that’s ailing him nor does he have other responsibilities now that he has been relieved of the armband. Babar fell to two basic unforced errors in the first Test, a squeeze down leg side and a drive without footwork doing for him. Home runs on flat surfaces against Bangladesh seemed like a no-brainer, and he now has one more Test to try and fix that.Mushfiqur Rahim played the role of the senior pro to a tee in the first Test. He used his strong defensive technique to good effect over the course of three partnerships that allowed the batters at the other end to operate with more freedom. Shadman Islam only opened up his repertoire in a 52-run stand with Mushfiqur, while Litton Das finally showed some form, after Mushfiqur allowed him to bat his way. Mehidy Hasan Miraz continued to shine with his batting mentor, playing out 178 balls in his innings. Mushfiqur continuing this role is bad news for Pakistan.Team news: Taskin in, Nahid out?Shaheen Afridi has been omitted from the squad for the second Test, with Abrar and Hamza part of the 12-member squad Pakistan have announced.Pakistan: 1 Abdullah Shafique, 2 Saim Ayub, 3 Shan Masood (capt), 4 Babar Azam, 5 Saud Shakeel, 6 Mohammad Rizwan (wk), 7 Salman Ali Agha, 8 Abrar Ahmed/Mir Hamza, 9 Naseem Shah, 10 Mohammad Ali, 11 Khurram ShahzadMushfiqur Rahim tunes up for the second Test against Pakistan•PCB

Man Utd star was ahead of Amad, but then Ten Hag sold him for just £15m

da winzada777: Over the years, Manchester United have made some questionable decisions in the transfer market, many of which have led to the current cost-cutting operating in place at Old Trafford.

da fezbet: Huge money has been splashed by various managers over the years, with the majority of funds being wasted on players who simply aren’t at the level of the Premier League.

Casemiro cost a mammoth £70m back in the summer of 2022, earning £350k-per-week, the highest of any player within the current first-team squad.

The Brazilian pockets £18.2m per season in the North West, a bonkers fee, with the hierarchy needing to part ways with the 33-year-old this summer to prevent losing any further cash.

However, in a time when many deals have been unsuccessful, the club have made a few superb additions, including one player who’s had to bide his time with the Red Devils.

Amad Diallo’s stats at Man Utd

Back in January 2021, United completed a £36m deal to land winger Amad Diallo from Italian side Atalanta, with the fee a huge one given his tender age of just 18.

However, he would make an immediate impact, scoring in the Europa League against AC Milan, but would be sent on multiple loans to gain valuable first-team minutes to continue his development.

The Ivorian linked up with Rangers and Sunderland, notching 14 goals throughout 2022/23 whilst with the Black Cats, often being known for scoring a screamer or two.

Despite returning to the club last season, this year has been his breakthrough year, notching nine goals and seven assists across all competitions, most of which have come under Ruben Amorim.

However, despite his impressive form at Old Trafford to date, the club made a huge mistake offloading a player who was once ahead of the youngster in the pecking order – thriving away from Manchester as a result.

The United star who was ahead of Amad but was sold by Ten Hag

Despite Amad’s progress at United over the last few months, the club have certainly made some huge calls they could live to regret, selling players on the cheap who have gone on to star elsewhere.

Angel Gomes is a player who springs to mind, spending the majority of his youth years at Old Trafford, before departing on a free transfer in the summer of 2020 – now being a full England international – showcasing the mistake the club made in allowing him to leave.

However, they made a similar mistake, allowing Anthony Elanga to depart in the summer of 2023, leaving in a £15m deal to join Nottingham Forest, ending his seven-year spell in the North West.

The Swedish international made 55 appearances for the club’s first-team, often featuring in the senior ranks whilst Amad spent his respective spells out on loan.

Elanga, who has previously been labelled “phenomenal” by journalist Zach Lowy, even scored in the Champions League against Atlético Madrid during the 2021/22 season – showcasing his importance to the first-team.

Manchester United forward Anthony Elanga.

However, after just five starts in the Premier League throughout 2022/23, Erik ten Hag would offload him, a decision that would be a huge mistake given his form this season.

The 22-year-old has notched five goals and nine assists across all competitions this campaign, including a double against Ipswich Town in his last outing – netting the first double of his professional career.

He’s also managed to outperform Amad in numerous key areas throughout the year, showcasing the development he’s made under Nuno Espírito Santo at the City Ground.

His lack of action during his final year in Manchester ultimately led to Ten Hag offloading him, with the winger needing valuable minutes to continue his progression.

You can’t blame the Swede for wanting to move on to take his career to the next level, but now he’s done just that, many around the club must wish he had stayed with the Red Devils, offering Amorim another dimension within the club’s forward line.
