SACA concerned South African cricket is falling apart

The players’ body has warned of administrative ‘dysfunctionality that threatens the existence of the game in our country’

The South African Cricketers’ Association (SACA) has issued a stern warning about the state of the game in the country and warned that its existence is under threat following the departure of the CEO and the president of Cricket South Africa (CSA). SACA has called on Chris Nenzani, who resigned as president over the weekend, to offer an explanation for stepping away three weeks before his tenure ended and for CSA to show leadership in matters relating to the suspended CEO Thabang Moroe and the season ahead.”SACA has engaged directly with players over the past few weeks, and there is a growing realisation amongst players that their careers as professional cricketers are being threatened by the very organization that should be nurturing them,” a SACA statement read.It further asked that CSA work appropriately to resolve the issues of discrimination that have come to light following Lungi Ngidi’s stance on the Black Lives Matter (BLM) movement, and the resumption of the domestic and international season and Moroe’s disciplinary situation. Most pressingly for SACA, South Africa’s players, both men and women, have no indication of when they will return to play following the Covid-19 hiatus, both as a result of international borders being closed and because no domestic fixtures have been finalised.ALSO READ – Graeme Smith ‘shocked’ after threats on supporting Black Lives Matter movement”CSA must show leadership in dealing with the various crises facing the game; the transformation and discrimination crisis that has come to the fore over the past two months; the resumption of domestic and international cricket under COVID-19; the finalization of the disciplinary matter of the suspended CEO; the forensic investigation; and the forecast deficit which has the potential to financially cripple the game,” the statement read.Franchise teams have returned to training and there is talk of the season starting in November but there is no clarity on whether the franchise T20 tournament, the Mzansi Super League (MSL), will take place or who will lead CSA through the next few months. An Acting CEO, Kugandrie Govender, was named this morning and will hold the post until the Moroe case is finalised. Only then can CSA begin the search for a new CEO. CSA is also operating under an acting president, Beresford Williams, with a new president set to be elected at the AGM on September 5. Nenzani has undertaken to engage with the media after that but SACA CEO Andrew Breetzke would like answers from him immediately.”Mr Nenzani owes all stakeholders an immediate explanation as to why he has stood down a mere three weeks before the CSA AGM, after he had refused to do so over the previous eight-month period despite calls to do so from key stakeholders within the game,” Breetzke said. “Together with the sudden resignation of Dr Jacques Faul as acting-CEO, one can only deduce that the Board of Directors has yet again reached a level of dysfunctionality that threatens the existence of the game in our country.”SACA has consistently led calls for Nenzani and Williams to step down, following last year’s administrative meltdown and again pointed to the board as being responsible for the troubles in the game. SACA continue to point at CSA’s inability to resolve its myriad problems as being due to lack of corporate governance and warned the game may face “total collapse” if issues are not dealt with.”CSA is embroiled in destructive politics at Board and Management level. It is evident that cricket is unable to self-correct,” Omphile Ramela, SACA’s president said. ” Many of the administrative challenges confronting the game are as a result of administrators failing to adhere to principles of corporate governance. Before we see the total collapse of the game of cricket there needs to be a leadership intervention at Board and Management level that is able to stabilise and transform both the game and the business of cricket.”

TOLIMA MELHORA E PASSA A OFERECER PERIGO

Red Bull 2 a 1.

Club would now accept £40m Liverpool bid for “excellent” Amorim favourite

da lvbet: Liverpool could now reportedly complete the signing of an "excellent" transfer target for a cut-price amount in the summer window.

Liverpool summer transfer targets

da betano casino: The Reds spent last summer solely focusing on rebuilding their midfield, and while they now look well-stocked in that area of the pitch, other signings are needed elsewhere at the end of the season. Centre-back looks like a key position to strengthen in, not only because Joel Matip is likely to leave when his contract runs out, but also due to Ibrahima Konate's constant battle to stay fit for long periods.

Sporting CP ace Goncalo Inacio has been continually linked with a move Liverpool this summer, with various rumours emerging throughout this season. The 22-year-old is seen as one of Europe's leading young defenders, playing a key role in his side's likely soon-to-be title-winning campaign in the Primeira Liga.

jean-clair-todibo-goncalo-inacio-liverpool-opinion

If Ruben Amorim comes in as Jurgen Klopp's replacement, the chance of the Reds snapping up Inacio could be further increased, and they have also been backed to make a move for his teammate Marcus Edwards. He is seen as a potential replacement for Luis Diaz if the Colombian leaves, scoring four goals and bagging three assists in the league so far this season.

Bayer Leverkusen left-back Alejandro Grimaldo has also emerged as a target for Liverpool, with the 28-year-old basking in the glory of being crowned Bundesliga champions over the weekend. His tally of nine goals and 12 assists from his wing-back role in 2023/24 sums up the attacking quality he possesses.

Goncalo Inacio transfer news

According to Football Insider, Sporting would accept a bid from Liverpool of just £40m this summer, despite reportedly having a €60m (£51.2m) release clause in their star defender's current deal. Sporting are renowned for inserting "very high" clauses into deals, but will then negotiate below that figure for a player Amorim starts week in week out.

maxence-laroix-goncalo-inacio-liverpool-opinion

It does appear as though Inacio is a genuine target for Liverpool, considering the number of times he has been linked with a switch to Anfield, and there are so many positives when it comes to imagining him in a Reds shirt. Perhaps the biggest immediate plus point is the fact that he could join alongside Amorim, with the Sporting boss the red-hot favourite to be Klopp's successor this summer. The pair know each other so well, meaning it could be a seamless transition for both.

Still only 22, Inacio would be viewed as not only a key man from the off, but also Virgil van Dijk's long-term heir in the left-sided centre-back role, gradually growing in influence over time. This season, he has averaged 2.4 clearances per game in the Europa League, as well as scoring three times in the competition for good measure. Football talent scout Jacek Kulig has called him an "excellent central defender".

Liverpool could now sign "fantastic" attacking star for just £30m this summer

Potential next Reds manager Ruben Amorim loves him.

ByHenry Jackson Apr 14, 2024

A classy user of the ball who can also play at left-back, the Portugal international would suit Liverpool's possession-based style, and he could mature into one of the finest defenders in the world, as long as he can avoid picking up serious injuries. The fact that he could even be signed for as little as £40m makes it a no-brainer of a transfer pursuit.

Counties wait for ECB approval on August restart plan

The ECB’s cricket committee will review proposals on Friday

Essex look set to remain county champions regardless what happens this season•Getty Images

The return of county cricket could come a step closer this week when the ECB’s cricket committee review proposals for the game’s restart. As revealed by ESPNcricinfo, plans were drawn up by the Professional Game Group (PGG) at the end of May that envisaged a return of some first-class from August 1, with T20 following a few weeks later. The PGG comprises several county chief executives including Surrey’s Richard Gould and Sussex’s Rob Andrew.ALSO READ: Five-day Lord’s final considered as counties hope for August startNow those plans, having been discussed and amended in consultation with the first-class counties and the MCC, will be discussed by the ECB cricket committee on Friday. If that committee, which is chaired by former England captain Andrew Strauss, view them positively, they will be sent to the ECB board for approval in the following week. At all stages, the ECB will require government approval to progress. The core of the plans has hardly changed. Under the favoured option, the first-class competition – it will not be called the ‘County Championship’ – would be split into three regional groups with six teams in each. They would, therefore, play five matches each, with two teams progressing to a five-day final to be staged at Lord’s at the end of September. The competition would have no bearing on promotion and relegation and is seen very much as a one-off solution to a unique challenge.”I don’t think anyone believes it can be called the County Championship,” Derek Bowden, the Essex chief executive, told ESPNcricinfo. “It would absolutely be worth winning, but it won’t be the County Championship and there certainly won’t be promotion and relegation.”The start of the T20 Blast competition would be scheduled some weeks later in the hope that some spectators may be allowed to attend from September onwards. The final of that competition is scheduled to be played, as has become customary, at Edgbaston. The second option outlined would only see the T20 competition staged this year. There is not, at present, any room for 50-over cricket within the proposals. But it has been suggested that, if plans for first-class cricket should falter – and it is accepted that booking hotels could prove problematic – the Royal London Cup could be revived in its place. It is understood that a vast majority of counties have expressed at least cautious support for the proposals, though one or two – notably Northamptonshire – have more reservations over the costs of taking squads off furlough without the guarantee of ticket sales to mitigate the expense.ALSO READ: Players question furlough rules after being told not to trainWhile an August 1 start date may seem distant, it would require prompt action from the game. Not only would most squads need to be taken off furlough – only the players at Surrey and Lancashire have not been furloughed – but training would need to start several weeks ahead of any games.”The objective is to have players back on July 1,” Bowden said. “The objective is to start the season on or around August 1, and bring players back a month before that to give them a month’s training. That’s yet to be confirmed, both at a medical and operational level, but that’s the ambition.”There is a cost involved in playing behind closed doors, but the number one objective is to play cricket. Then our supporters and members, whether it’s through TV or streaming, can actually watch live competitive sport, which is great for them and great for the country.”The vast majority [of counties] support it. There may be one or two who are looking at the maths, and I can understand that, but to me the objective of playing live sport is overriding.”The general public needs live entertainment. It’s crucial. It can lift people. Providing it’s safe, and providing we’re not endangering anybody, bringing live sport back into the homes of individuals is really good.”

Chelsea eyeing £43m striker who could be even better than Osimhen

da imperador bet: It is no secret that Chelsea have been after a new centre-forward for many months now, with Napoli's Victor Osimhen the main name rumoured to fill the void.

da cassino: The Nigerian forward has bagged 12 times in 19 Serie A appearances this campaign, but his sensational season hasn't gone unnoticed, with the likes of Arsenal and PSG also interested in signing the 25-year-old.

However, any deal for Osimhen will be an expensive one, with the Italian side holding out for at least a reported £112m to part ways with the clinical striker.

Napoli star Victor Osimhen

There's little doubt about his ability to find the back of the net, but should Chelsea try and sign the attacker, it would be the club's third £100m+ signing in just over two years following the arrivals of Enzo Fernández and Moises Caicedo.

The Londoners may be at risk of potential punishment from the Premier League after losing £90m during 2022/23, with the Blues potentially unable to meet the PSR rules implemented.

Therefore, Mauricio Pochettino's side should potentially look for a cheaper alternative to help combat their efforts, with the club already linked with another talented forward.

Chelsea's Osimhen alternative

According to journalist Rudi Galetti, the Blues are "monitoring" RB Leipzig striker Benjamin Sesko, with the 20-year-old scoring 12 goals in all competitions this season.

The Slovenian international has a £43m release clause in his contract, which has caught the attention of Chelsea, Arsenal and Napoli – should Osimhen depart the Italian side.

benjamin-sesko-manchester-united-harry-kane-transfer-ten-hag

Sesko only joined the Bundesliga team from sister club RB Salzburg back in July 2023, after scoring 29 times in 79 games for the Austrian outfit.

In his first full season in one of Europe's top five leagues, the youngster has done an admirable job given his tender age – prompting interest from the aforementioned sides.

He's a clinical goalscorer with a great eye for goal, with the Blues potentially needing to prioritise a deal for the Leipzig man given his impressive debut season in Germany.

Sesko v Osimhen in 2023/24

Whilst the Nigerian has scored four more league goals than Sesko during the current campaign, that's the only aspect of his game he has outperformed the 20-year-old, with Sesko dominating in all-round play.

Despite scoring more goals, Osimhen trails the Slovenian for his conversion rate, with Napoli's talisman only converting 24% of his chances compared to Sesko's tally of 28%, as per Squawka.

Benjamin Sesko

The youngster also boasts a higher shot-on-target accuracy rate, with his tally 62% more accurate than Osimhen's 57% despite the 25-year-old's better goalscoring record.

Notwithstanding the fact the 20-year-old is more of an aerial threat, as demonstrated by his tally of 56% aerial duels won, he's also dominated the Nigerian with the ball at his feet, completing 5% more of the take-ons he's attempted this season.

As represented in the table, Leipzig's striker has been caught offside 20 times less than Osimhen – demonstrating that the youngster is more aware of his surroundings in comparison to the proven goalscorer.

Given the five-year age gap and £70m difference in price tag, Chelsea should look to pursue a move for the Leipzig forward, with Sesko able to offer much more than the Napoli striker in terms of his all-round play. Just think about his frightening pace too; he really is the complete package.

£43m is a bargain for a player of his ability and potential, giving the Blues a long-term solution to their goalscoring problems and potentially allowing them to make a hefty profit down the line.

ECB handed discretion over move to stage two training by government

Next phase of training includes social-distancing exemptions

The path for England’s return to international cricket has become clearer after the UK government published stage two guidelines for the resumption of elite sporting training.Stage two of competitive training sees players given exemptions on social-distancing rules where necessary as part of training, with the decision on when to move from the first to the second stage at the ECB’s discretion.Eighteen bowlers returned to training on a strict individual basis at the end of last week, with players adhering to a precise set of protocols regarding personal hygiene and social distancing under the supervision of a physiotherapist.ALSO READ: West Indies CEO ‘increasingly confident’ on England tourEngland are likely to name an enlarged squad of up to 45 players later this week, with players gradually returning to training as required. Batsmen and wicketkeepers are due to begin training on Monday, June 1, while white-ball players are likely to return later. The first Test against West Indies is pencilled in for July 8, while the first limited-overs internationals are likely to be a three-match ODI series against Ireland at the end of July/start of August. The new guidance says that stage two training is anticipated to “start with smaller ‘clusters’ of 2-3 athletes and eventually progress to larger groups of 4-12 athletes, and ultimately full-team training”. It also stresses that social distancing should be maintained “at all other times aside from technical training”.The guidance differs slightly from that issued by the ICC last week, which encouraged players to maintain social distancing during training. It is highly likely that players will be encouraged to continue practices from individual training, such as bowlers bringing their own set of balls, regular use of disinfectant wipes, and washing hands regularly. The guidance recommends keeping communal areas like changing rooms closed, and re-states that athletes and staff should be made clear on their option to opt out at any point. The ECB should also ensure that coaches and athletes are “briefed on, understand and are able to operate within the risk mitigation strategy associated with stage two training”, the guidance states.”This new guidance marks the latest phase of a carefully phased return to training process for elite athletes, designed to limit the risk of injury and protect the health and safety of all involved,” Nigel Huddleston, the sports minister, said.”We are absolutely clear that individual sports must review whether they have the appropriate carefully controlled medical conditions in place before they can proceed, and secure the confidence of athletes, coaches and support staff.”Given the wide-ranging input we have received from medical experts, we believe these pragmatic measures should provide further reassurance that a safe, competitive training environment can be delivered, as we work towards a restart of professional sport behind closed doors when it is safe to do so.”A Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) statement said: “The elite sport return-to-training guidance intends to minimise the risk to the elite sports community, while also minimising any pressure elite sport places on healthcare workers and the wider community during the resumption of training. Like all changes to current measures it will be kept under review in accordance with the government’s Covid alert system.”
