Man Utd could soon replicate Saka’s rise by unleashing "wonderkid" at LB

da marjack bet: While it cannot be used as an excuse to cover up what has at times been a disappointing and frustrating campaign for Manchester United, there's no denying that Erik ten Hag has not been helped by the plethora of injuries that have hampered his side throughout the season.

da betobet: The Dutchman has notably had to make do without his former Ajax star, Lisandro Martinez for almost the entirety of 2023/24, with the World Cup winner having been restricted to just ten appearances in all competitions thus far.

Those woes have not been helped by separate issues for the likes of Harry Maguire, Jonny Evans, Raphael Varane and Victor Lindelof at various periods in the season, ensuring there has been a real sense of turbulence in the centre-back ranks.

It is, however, at left-back where arguably the biggest and most sustained problem lies, with the Red Devils losing Luke Shaw with an injury that could keep him out until the end of the season, while understudy and forgotten man Tyrell Malacia has yet to feature at all this term due to his own injury hell.

With Sergio Reguilon seeing his loan deal cut short courtesy of a break clause in January – and with Alvaro Fernandez moving to Benfica on an initial temporary deal – Ten Hag has a real dearth of options in that role, with Aaron Wan-Bissaka the latest makeshift solution during the recent win over Liverpool.

While United will now likely hope to stumble on before recruiting a new left-sided defender this summer, Ten Hag may wish to consider looking to his academy ranks, with one certain teenager potentially able to replicate the rise of Arsenal's, Bukayo Saka.

Bukayo Saka's record at Arsenal

United supporters may not be too willing to give much acknowledgement regarding the form of a rival star, yet it is hard to ignore the remarkable impact that Saka has made at the Emirates of late, becoming the figurehead for Mikel Arteta's title hopefuls.

Still only 22, the England international already has 54 goals and 55 assists to his name in 216 games in all competitions to date for the Gunners, having already chipped in with 31 goals and assists across all fronts this season.

If Arsenal are to enjoy any form of success either this season – or beyond – Saka is almost certainly set to be right at the heart of it, with the wing wizard having that knack for simply terrorising defences down the right flank.

Why is this relevant to United you ask? Well, as memory serves, the Three Lions ace did in fact spend much of his early stint in the Gunners first-team at left-back, notably playing in that role on 17 occasions in the 2019/20 season.

Having flitted between operating in that defensive berth or in a more advanced role in the youth set-up, Saka – who made his full debut for the club at the age of just 17 in 2018 – was able to plug a gap at full-back initially, prior to transitioning into the devastating right-winger that Premier League defences fear today.

Man Utd must rue losing a "wonderkid" who's now worth as much as Mainoo

The incredibly talented youngster left Old Trafford looking for first-team football.

ByJack Salveson Holmes Mar 19, 2024

Interestingly, as far as United are concerned, the club could potentially have an emerging talent who can follow Saka's pathway in the form of Bendito Mantato, with the teenager certainly creating a buzz at present.

Bendito Mantato's season in numbers

While hopes of featuring in the first team in the near future may seem premature as Mantato is just 16, as previously stated Saka himself was only a year older when he was handed a chance at the Emirates, ensuring it may not be too long before the United man does feature under Ten Hag.

As the Manchester Evening News recently revealed, there is notable interest in Mantato at present from rival clubs, with the report noting the comparison between the youngster and Saka, due to his ability to feature at left-back or on the right flank.

In The Pipeline

Football FanCast's In the Pipeline series aims to uncover the very best youth players in world football.

The exciting "wonderkid" – as per U23 scout Antonio Mango – looks like he won't be going anywhere if the latest reports are to be believed, however, with the indication being that he has already verbally agreed scholarship terms with his current side.

Tieing Mantato down to a new contract would certainly be in United's interests, not least for his likeness to Saka, with the future star having caught fire this season after scoring five goals in just five games in the U18 Premier League.

That included a dazzling four-goal haul in the recent comeback victory over Blackburn Rovers, with Mantato's first goal showcasing his Saka-esque nature as he expertly weaved his way into the area, before cutting in onto his favoured left foot and lashing home.

At a time when Kobbie Mainoo and Alejandro Garnacho are shining in the senior ranks, Mantato has already been pictured in first-team training in recent weeks, further raising hopes that he is set to be the next star off the club's conveyor belt of talent.

Of course, much of the excitement may be surrounding his current brilliance on the wing, yet amid United's left-back predicament – and with Shaw's repeated injury issues posing a long-term problem – the teen ace could represent a wildcard solution.

He has lined up in that role on multiple occasions this season for England's U16 side, making his promotion certainly something to consider for Ten Hag – with Mantato only recently making his U21s debut against West Bromwich Albion.

Putting faith in one so young may represent a risk, yet after looking at the examples of Mainoo, Garnacho, and Saka at Arsenal, turning to the academy ranks is so often a wise decision.

As that man Mango stated, Bendito Mantato – "remember the name"….

Most famous fans: Which celebrities support Tottenham Hotspur?

da lvbet: Celebrity fans are always an interesting topic, especially when it comes to Tottenham Hotspur. They often leave you wondering why, how and when they started supporting a certain club. And the stories never disappoint, with random allegiances to the team the likely reason, whilst some celebrities have, in fact, been lifelong fans.

da bwin: In England, you would generally expect Hollywood to find the likes of Liverpool and Manchester United the most attractive; they are clubs made for famous names, both of which are built on an incredible history of winning it all. Yet, strangely enough, it is Spurs who have one of the more impressive collections of ‘A-list’ celebrity fans.

With that said, from professional wrestlers to rappers, and Spider-Man himself, Football FanCast takes a look at which celebrities support Tottenham Hotspur.

10 Sir Trevor McDonald Legendary newsreader

When he wasn’t reading out the news throughout his legendary career, as a massive fan of the club, Sir Trevor McDonald was likely looking out for the Spurs score.

During his time as a supporter, he’s seen plenty of ups and downs. The veteran broadcaster would've been just 11 years old when the club won the Second Division for the second time in 1950 and 12 years old when they won their first First Division title just a year later in 1951.

He was also lucky enough to see his beloved Spurs win the league and cup double in 1961 – the only time the north Londoners have achieved the feat in their history.

Given that he was born in Trinidad and Tobago, his Spurs support is something of a surprise. One day, he will hope to read the news, once again, of a major Spurs trophy, and under Ange Postecoglou, who knows – that could be sooner than he thinks.

9 Michael McIntyre One of the UK's biggest comedians

Michael McIntyre’s support of Spurs is no secret. The comedian was even spotted at Carrow Road as Antonio Conte’s side defeated Norwich City 5-0 on the final day of the 2021/22 season.

McIntyre is also a regular at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, often seen with his family in the stands. Given that he's won a Bafta for his comedic talents, he's clearly got some time on his hands!

Not only has he carved out a career telling jokes, he's also regularly seen on television, as he fronts game shows like The Wheel and Michael McIntyre's Big Show, where he was recently seen waking up ex-Spurs and England striker Peter Crouch at midnight for the 'Midnight Gameshow', which must have been a thrill for the Lilywhites supporter.

8 Steve Nash 8-time NBA All-Star

With 18 seasons in the NBA to his name during which he was an All-Star on eight occasions, former Brooklyn Nets coach Steve Nash is a Spurs fan when it comes to the beautiful game.

The former basketball player knows all about reaching impressive heights, and will hope that Postecoglou can match his success eventually.

He's been a ridiculously successful figure in the American sport, playing in the NBA All-Star team on eight occasions between 2002 and 2012, as well as being named the league's most valuable player in 2005 and 2006.

When it comes to getting over the line, Nash knows precisely what it takes – a quality he shares with the tactically astute Australian.

7 AJ Tracey British rapper

One of the most outspoken Spurs fans and one of the biggest music artists in the UK, AJ Tracey may well be the biggest fan of the north London club on this list.

When he’s not producing hits, he can often be seen tweeting about his beloved club or speaking elsewhere about them. The rapper was even seen behind the scenes at Spurs’ pre-season last year and has regularly tweeted about transfer news.

It just goes to show that even those with all the fame in the world are just like us; consistently refreshing Twitter to get the latest news on their club.

6 Sir Alan Sugar Former Spurs chairman

If anyone could rival AJ Tracey for the biggest Spurs fan on this list, it is Sir Alan Sugar.

Often a controversial character, when he’s not firing people in the boardroom, he can be seen unapologetically shouting his support for the north London club.

The businessman owned a stake in the club up until 2007, when he sold his percentage for £25m and he will go down in Spurs history as the man who signed Jurgen Klinsmann when he was the club's owner.

The club weren't in the best state when Sugar left as chairman, mind, but he is still often seen on British television, fronting The Apprentice.

5 Mark Wahlberg Hollywood actor

Yep, that’s right, A-list actor Mark Wahlberg is a Tottenham Hotspur fan.

Away from Hollywood, Wahlberg has previously been pictured wearing a Spurs shirt as he pledged his allegiance to the north London club, whilst also taking aim at bitter rivals Arsenal in the process.

Part of us hopes that he still keeps a keen eye on the club, but he's a very busy man, having produced four separate projects in the last year alone.

He's undoubtedly one of the most famous fans of the club out there, as he remains instantly recognisable for film lovers young and old.

4 Sir Kenneth Branagh Actor and Oscar-winning director

When he’s not solving crimes on trains or boats in his acting roles, Sir Kenneth Branagh is busy supporting his beloved Spurs.

The famous actor and director even had the privilege of narrating the final video at White Hart Lane as the north London club said goodbye to the historic stadium.

As a Spurs fan, it may well sit alongside some of his movie roles as his favourite moment, although that might be topped by his Oscar win for the screenplay for Belfast.

An incredible acting talent who can also write his own material, Branagh will be hoping Spurs follow a Hollywood script and become a big player in the Premier League once again.

3 Tom Holland Your friendly neighbourhood Spurs fan

It arguably doesn’t get cooler than Spider-Man in himself, does it?

Tom Holland has been a lifelong fan of the club, and has even tried doing his best recruitment job for the club when he revealed that he asked Kylian Mbappe about joining Spurs at the 2021 Ballon d’Or ceremony.

Even the Avengers member couldn’t convince the Frenchman, however. If he'd had his Spidey mask on, maybe things would have been different.

Holland has also collaborated with club captain Son Heung-min in the past, with the South Korea international pulling out a Spider-Man celebration after scoring a couple of years ago.

2 Adele Popstar extraordinaire

Adele’s adoration for Tottenham Hotspur is no secret, as she is a lifelong fan of the club. She is one of the most famous singers of all time and has sold over 170 million records worldwide, becoming the best-selling female artist of the 21st century in the UK and regularly being nominated for Grammys.

The singer will be hoping to see Postecoglou's side set fire to the rain during his tenure, and will no doubt pop in to say Hello as her side seeks to achieve hometown glory on all fronts. And, no, rumour has it, we are not tired of making Adele references!

1 John Cena Actor and WWE wrestler

At number one is famous wrestler and actor John Cena. He may have won an endless amount of titles himself, but having previously pledged his loyalty to Spurs, he may be looking to see them lift a title of their own one day.

Indeed, Cena is one of the most decorated professional wrestlers of all time, having become a Main Event talent during his time with WWE.

How many world championships has he won? Just the 16, making him the joint record holder alongside Ric Flair. Now forging a path in Hollywood, Cena is without a doubt one of the most famous Spurs fans you're going to find.

Counties wait for ECB approval on August restart plan

The ECB’s cricket committee will review proposals on Friday

The return of county cricket could come a step closer this week when the ECB’s cricket committee review proposals for the game’s restart. As revealed by ESPNcricinfo, plans were drawn up by the Professional Game Group (PGG) at the end of May that envisaged a return of some first-class from August 1, with T20 following a few weeks later. The PGG comprises several county chief executives including Surrey’s Richard Gould and Sussex’s Rob Andrew.ALSO READ: Five-day Lord’s final considered as counties hope for August startNow those plans, having been discussed and amended in consultation with the first-class counties and the MCC, will be discussed by the ECB cricket committee on Friday. If that committee, which is chaired by former England captain Andrew Strauss, view them positively, they will be sent to the ECB board for approval in the following week. At all stages, the ECB will require government approval to progress. The core of the plans has hardly changed. Under the favoured option, the first-class competition – it will not be called the ‘County Championship’ – would be split into three regional groups with six teams in each. They would, therefore, play five matches each, with two teams progressing to a five-day final to be staged at Lord’s at the end of September. The competition would have no bearing on promotion and relegation and is seen very much as a one-off solution to a unique challenge.”I don’t think anyone believes it can be called the County Championship,” Derek Bowden, the Essex chief executive, told ESPNcricinfo. “It would absolutely be worth winning, but it won’t be the County Championship and there certainly won’t be promotion and relegation.”The start of the T20 Blast competition would be scheduled some weeks later in the hope that some spectators may be allowed to attend from September onwards. The final of that competition is scheduled to be played, as has become customary, at Edgbaston. The second option outlined would only see the T20 competition staged this year. There is not, at present, any room for 50-over cricket within the proposals. But it has been suggested that, if plans for first-class cricket should falter – and it is accepted that booking hotels could prove problematic – the Royal London Cup could be revived in its place. It is understood that a vast majority of counties have expressed at least cautious support for the proposals, though one or two – notably Northamptonshire – have more reservations over the costs of taking squads off furlough without the guarantee of ticket sales to mitigate the expense.ALSO READ: Players question furlough rules after being told not to trainWhile an August 1 start date may seem distant, it would require prompt action from the game. Not only would most squads need to be taken off furlough – only the players at Surrey and Lancashire have not been furloughed – but training would need to start several weeks ahead of any games.”The objective is to have players back on July 1,” Bowden said. “The objective is to start the season on or around August 1, and bring players back a month before that to give them a month’s training. That’s yet to be confirmed, both at a medical and operational level, but that’s the ambition.”There is a cost involved in playing behind closed doors, but the number one objective is to play cricket. Then our supporters and members, whether it’s through TV or streaming, can actually watch live competitive sport, which is great for them and great for the country.”The vast majority [of counties] support it. There may be one or two who are looking at the maths, and I can understand that, but to me the objective of playing live sport is overriding.”The general public needs live entertainment. It’s crucial. It can lift people. Providing it’s safe, and providing we’re not endangering anybody, bringing live sport back into the homes of individuals is really good.”

SACA concerned South African cricket is falling apart

The players’ body has warned of administrative ‘dysfunctionality that threatens the existence of the game in our country’

The South African Cricketers’ Association (SACA) has issued a stern warning about the state of the game in the country and warned that its existence is under threat following the departure of the CEO and the president of Cricket South Africa (CSA). SACA has called on Chris Nenzani, who resigned as president over the weekend, to offer an explanation for stepping away three weeks before his tenure ended and for CSA to show leadership in matters relating to the suspended CEO Thabang Moroe and the season ahead.”SACA has engaged directly with players over the past few weeks, and there is a growing realisation amongst players that their careers as professional cricketers are being threatened by the very organization that should be nurturing them,” a SACA statement read.It further asked that CSA work appropriately to resolve the issues of discrimination that have come to light following Lungi Ngidi’s stance on the Black Lives Matter (BLM) movement, and the resumption of the domestic and international season and Moroe’s disciplinary situation. Most pressingly for SACA, South Africa’s players, both men and women, have no indication of when they will return to play following the Covid-19 hiatus, both as a result of international borders being closed and because no domestic fixtures have been finalised.ALSO READ – Graeme Smith ‘shocked’ after threats on supporting Black Lives Matter movement”CSA must show leadership in dealing with the various crises facing the game; the transformation and discrimination crisis that has come to the fore over the past two months; the resumption of domestic and international cricket under COVID-19; the finalization of the disciplinary matter of the suspended CEO; the forensic investigation; and the forecast deficit which has the potential to financially cripple the game,” the statement read.Franchise teams have returned to training and there is talk of the season starting in November but there is no clarity on whether the franchise T20 tournament, the Mzansi Super League (MSL), will take place or who will lead CSA through the next few months. An Acting CEO, Kugandrie Govender, was named this morning and will hold the post until the Moroe case is finalised. Only then can CSA begin the search for a new CEO. CSA is also operating under an acting president, Beresford Williams, with a new president set to be elected at the AGM on September 5. Nenzani has undertaken to engage with the media after that but SACA CEO Andrew Breetzke would like answers from him immediately.”Mr Nenzani owes all stakeholders an immediate explanation as to why he has stood down a mere three weeks before the CSA AGM, after he had refused to do so over the previous eight-month period despite calls to do so from key stakeholders within the game,” Breetzke said. “Together with the sudden resignation of Dr Jacques Faul as acting-CEO, one can only deduce that the Board of Directors has yet again reached a level of dysfunctionality that threatens the existence of the game in our country.”SACA has consistently led calls for Nenzani and Williams to step down, following last year’s administrative meltdown and again pointed to the board as being responsible for the troubles in the game. SACA continue to point at CSA’s inability to resolve its myriad problems as being due to lack of corporate governance and warned the game may face “total collapse” if issues are not dealt with.”CSA is embroiled in destructive politics at Board and Management level. It is evident that cricket is unable to self-correct,” Omphile Ramela, SACA’s president said. ” Many of the administrative challenges confronting the game are as a result of administrators failing to adhere to principles of corporate governance. Before we see the total collapse of the game of cricket there needs to be a leadership intervention at Board and Management level that is able to stabilise and transform both the game and the business of cricket.”

Gostei da capacidade do time querer ganhar o jogo.

A próxima chance que Florentín e seus comandados terão de acabarem com o jejum de vitórias que dura cinco partidas será no dia 13 de setembro quando o Leão da Ilha recebe, pela 20ª Rodada do Brasileirão, o Internacional.

Angelo Mathews and Kusal Mendis had given Sri Lanka hope but the home side lost late wickets to finish on the brink

Sri Lanka’s hopes of setting a tricky chase faded late on day three as Beau Webster provided key contributions with the ball and in the field to inch Australia close to a series victory.Angelo Mathews and Kusal Mendis had breathed life into the second Test with an outstanding 70-run partnership as Sri Lanka’s lead grew to 41 runs. But less than 30 minutes before stumps, Mathews lost his concentration on 76 and swept Nathan Lyon to fine leg, where a diving Webster completed a terrific catch.Related

In another masterstroke from stand-in captain Steven Smith, Webster was handed the ball and unfurled his offspin – instead of seam – to dismiss Ramesh Mendis for a duck.Webster almost had Prabath Jayasuriya caught and bowled first ball, while Mendis survived a huge lbw shout off Lyon that was given not out by umpire Joel Wilson. Australia unsuccessfully reviewed in an umpire’s call, but Smith’s gut instincts again proved correct when left-arm spinner Matthew Kuhnemann was tasked with bowling the final over and he promptly dismissed Jayasuriya.Sri Lanka lead by just 54 runs with two wickets in hand having lost 3 for 13 in the last five overs. Their chances of victory have effectively evaporated unless Mendis, who finished unbeaten on 48 having been left stranded on 85 in Sri Lanka’s first innings, can produce a miracle.Sri Lanka had earlier appeared headed for a defeat within three days. Trailing by 157 runs on the first innings, they stared down the barrel of a quick demise at 39 for 3 when Lyon claimed his 550th Test wicket after dismissing Dinesh Chandimal for 12.Highest score by an Australian wicketkeeper in Asia•ESPNcricinfo Ltd

Retiring Dimuth Karunaratne had fallen for 14, caught behind off Kuhnemann, bringing down the curtain on his 100-Test career. After prolonging his last moments at the crease with a review in vain, Karunaratne received an embrace from Lyon and Chandimal before walking off to a big ovation from those at the ground, including the Australians. It was Kuhnemann’s second wicket after he bowled opener Pathum Nissanka with a good length delivery that slid on.Chandimal had scored a couple of 70s in this series, but needed an even bigger contribution if Sri Lanka were to turn around their dire situation. But after being pinned down, Chandimal lost his patience against Lyon and hit to mid-off, where Webster moved nimbly to take a sharp catch low down.Mathews and Kamindu Mendis provided some resistance with a 42-run partnership having both received reprieves after missed chances by Alex Carey with the gloves.Entering the series averaging over 70, Kamindu’s tame series ended when he chipped Lyon to mid-off but skipper Dhananjaya de Silva batted crisply in a 47-run partnership with Mathews.Steve Smith took a spectacular slip catch to dismiss Dhananjaya de Silva•Getty Images

They moved along with relative ease to chip away at the deficit and Mathews reached his half-century in style with a six over cover off debutant Cooper Connolly, who was used for a couple of overs.Just when Sri Lanka’s hopes were raised, Smith seemingly dealt them a crushing blow when he completed a sensational one-handed, diving catch at slip after de Silva edged Kuhnemann. But Mendis came out with an aggressive mindset to rattle a tiring Australia attack amid the humidity. He levelled the scores with a slog sweep off Lyon that sailed into the crowd before lifting Sri Lanka into the lead on the next ball.Sri Lanka were having arguably their best period with the bat in the series before Mathews’ rush of blood. It was a disappointment for Sri Lanka after their best day of the series ended on a sour note.Sri Lanka’s attempts at a fightback started when they claimed seven wickets in the morning session to bowl out Australia for 414. Jayasuriya found venomous bite with the second new ball to pick up four of his five wickets in the session.Smith and Carey’s magnificent partnership of 259 ended less than 20 minutes into the day’s play. In another batting record for Australia in this series, it was the highest fourth-wicket partnership by a visiting pair in Sri Lanka in Tests, bettering the 258-stand between Michael Hussey and Shaun Marsh in Pallekele in 2011.Australia resumed in a powerful position at 330 for 3, but they knew there was work to do in their bid to only bat once in this match. Jayasuriya was rewarded for his attacking line and lengths when Smith’s stout defence was finally breached on 131 by a brilliant delivery that pitched on off stump and gripped off the surface.
