Sheffield Wednesday must avoid future Bernard repeat with £1.5m-rated star

da pinup bet: Sheffield Wednesday fans are getting excited already about the prospect of the upcoming Championship season, with so many signings entering in through the door at Hillsborough on a daily basis.

da fazobetai: The number now stands at nine new additions to the camp in South Yorkshire, but Danny Rohl will know that there's a number of top performers from last campaign that he can still rely on, away from the rumour mill churning out another potential name that could be a fresh incoming.

Anthony Musaba is one of those faces that the German boss knows can do a job next season, as the Owls aim to put their relegation anxieties from this campaign just gone to one side, and strive to even be a potential promotion dark horse if everything slots into place.

Anthony Musaba's time at Sheffield Wednesday

Musaba has turned out to be a masterstroke of a signing by the Owls, snapping up the ex-AS Monaco attacker on a free transfer, before he exploded into life for Rohl and Co during tense affairs towards the bottom of the second tier.

The Dutchman would score seven goals and pick up five assists for his employers in league action when times were tough last campaign, with four of those goal contributions coming during Wednesday's last six games of the season, as the Owls went on an unbeaten run to stave off the drop in unbelievable fashion.

Sheffield Wednesday forward Anthony Musaba.

This has resulted in Musaba's value obviously rising, with the Owls' punt on the 23-year-old massively paying off, as Football Transfers now estimates the 6 foot winger's value stands at £1.5m.

With a whole host of new attackers purchased this summer, it will be intriguing to see where Musaba fits in amongst the likes of Jamal Lowe and Olaf Kobacki joining the building, with a temptation potentially to sell him on for some easy profit.

Still, you imagine he will be a presence Rohl will want around the building in case things go pear-shaped again in the division.

There will be a worry that he could leave for nothing next summer, however, with his Owls contract up in 2025, as Wednesday suffer in the here and now with a similar predicament involving Di'Shon Bernard.

Di'Shon Bernard's situation at Wednesday

Bernard's future at Hillsborough is still very much up in the air, with no firm decision yet made by the former Manchester United defender on a new deal, as speculation starts to mount over what his next onward destination will be.

Losing Bernard for nothing would be a gutting blow to Wednesday's morale, with the Jamaica international worth £1m previously according to Football Transfers as well, but Musaba would be an even more catastrophic hit to the Owls' confidence if he also becomes a free agent down the line.

Everyone involved with Wednesday will hope Musaba can perform to the same levels he did last season whatever role he takes on in the new-look Owls set-up, with the potential for his value to rise back up to a hefty £2.1m if he has another bright campaign.

Losing Bernard would be demoralising, but with Wednesday already actively looking at new centre-back targets in the form of Mickael Nade recently, replacements are already being drafted up and explored.

Sheffield Wednesday manager Danny Rohl.

Whereas, Musaba will want to stay put and excel again, as Wednesday aim to build on the drama of staying up last season and head for a spot in the top half of the division.

Dane van Niekerk proves Invincible as the Hundred is launched with a thriller

Kate Cross stars with three wickets for Originals, but victory is sealed with two balls to spare

A fluent, unbeaten half-century from captain Dane van Niekerk saw Oval Invincibles recover from 12 for 3 to chase down 136 with two balls to spare on the opening night of the Hundred as English cricket ushered in its new 100-ball competition. The standalone women’s match launched the competition in front of a 7,395 crowd in at The Oval, with Kate Cross, Manchester Originals’ captain, admitting “we don’t know what a good score is so we thought we’d go out and give it a go” as she opted to bat first. The Originals’ total of 135 for 6 was held together by Lizelle Lee’s anchoring innings of 42 off 39 balls, with middle-order cameos from Harmanpreet Kaur and captain Cross injecting some life into the innings and dragging them up towards a defendable score.Cross struck three times in her first seven balls in the run chase, as the Invincibles slipped to 12 for 3 and then 36 for 4 as their hopes quickly faded. But van Niekerk added 73 with Marizanne Kapp to keep them in the game, profiting from two dropped catches and cashing in when the Originals’ spinners dropped short.Kapp fell for 38 to a sharp leg-side stumping by Ellie Threlkeld – though subsequent replays suggested she had taken the ball in front of the stumps – with 27 needed from 17 balls, but Villiers’ straight six off Sophie Ecclestone kept the rate in check, and van Niekerk flashed an edge for four past Threlkeld with the scores tied to seal the win.Opening salvoKapp took the new ball for the Invincibles and emulated Sussex’s James Kirtley by starting a new format of the game with a wide, spraying one down the leg side to her compatriot Lee. But after an ignominious start, Kapp found both rhythm and nip, seaming the ball to beat Lee’s outside edge twice in her first set of five balls. That was enough for van Niekerk to decide to leave her on for a second set of five balls, and the move was vindicated almost immediately, as the in-form Emma Lamb nicked her second ball through to Sarah Bryce. Umpire Tim Robinson was the only person in the ground to miss the noise as the ball passed the bat, and his not-out decision was quickly overturned via the DRS.Kate Cross was the pick of the Manchester Original attack with three early wickets•AFP/Getty Images

But with the powerplay shortened to 25 balls, the Originals decided to keep attacking. Lee dispatched Tash Farrant for consecutive boundaries to get herself up and running, before crunching Shabnim Ismail for four through point, while Georgie Boyce lashes consecutive fours off Kapp as the Invincibles conceded 31 runs in the final 15 balls of fielding restrictions.Kaur, blimeyThe Invincibles opted to use their spinners – van Niekerk and Mady Villiers – in initial 10-ball bursts from each end, and after Villiers had Boyce caught at extra cover, van Niekerk opted to keep her on for a second consecutive set of 10 balls from the Pavilion End. It proved to be a mistake: having conceded 13 from her first 15, Villiers was taken for four fours in five balls as Kaur evoked the spirit of Derby 2017 and found full flow.

Farrant had Lee caught at cover for an anchoring 42 off 39 and removed Kaur shortly after, dinking to short fine leg, but her 29 off 16 balls had added impetus to the innings. Cross and Ecclestone traded sixes in the final set of 10, and while Farrant added a third by having Ecclestone stumped thanks to a canny offcutter, the Originals’ 135 looked like a competitive score.Invincibles’ false startCross struck twice in two balls during her first set of five, having Alice Capsey caught behind while lap-sweeping and crashing one into the top of Grace Gibbs’ stumps. Fran Wilson calmly flicked her hat-trick ball down to fine leg for four, but fell shortly after as she chipped a catch to Kaur at mid-off to give Laura Jackson a wicket with her first ball.Related

Cross’ third wicket, Georgia Adams plinking a pull to short midwicket, left the Invincibles four down inside 32 balls and reeling, but van Niekerk cut and pulled hard against the spin, trying to marshal the strike in partnership with Kapp and getting a life on 30 when Kaur put her down at mid-off.Captain fantasticEcclestone held the key as one of the world’s premier death bowlers, and had conceded only three runs off the first 11 balls of her allocation before Kapp thumped her over long-on for six. Her dismissal off the next ball, stumped down the leg side with lightning hands by Threlkeld, but when Mignon du Preez shelled a chance in the deep off van Niekerk with 24 needed off 15, the momentum shifted once more.

Van Niekerk back-foot punched Hartley for four more to take the equation to 16 off 10 balls before Ecclestone’s final set of five, and when Villiers slapped her second legal ball over long-on, the required rate was a run a ball. With six to win off the last over, Villiers backed away and squeezed Cross’ yorker away behind square on the off side, before van Niekerk’s thick outside edge sealed the deal with two balls to spare.

Imagine him & Ampadu: Leeds want to sign "perfect" star after Rodon

da apostebet: Leeds United completed their first signing of the summer transfer window on Tuesday as Joe Rodon officially joined the club on a permanent deal.

da 888casino: The Wales international has put pen to paper on a four-year contract at Elland Road and committed his future to the Whites after spending the 2023/24 campaign on loan from Tottenham Hotspur.

A fee of £10m has reportedly been paid for the towering central defender to ensure that the star titan remains in West Yorkshire for next season and beyond.

Academy graduate Archie Gray has, in a separate transaction, signed for Spurs for a fee in the region of £40m after just one season in the first team for Leeds, which has opened up a gap at right-back and in midfield within the squad.

The summer transfer window still has just under two months left to run and this means that Daniel Farke and his team have plenty of time to dip into the market to find players to plug those gaps.

Leeds United interest in English midfielder

Rodon may not be the only player Leeds sign from Tottenham Hotspur this summer as the Whites are reportedly keen on a deal to sign another talent from the Premier League side.

According to GIVEMESPORT, Farke wants to sign former England U21 international Oliver Skipp from the Lilywhites to bolster his options in midfield.

The report claims that the West Yorkshire outfit want to add him to the squad after signing Rodon from the North London team, particularly after Gray's departure.

It adds that Skipp is a big admirer of the German head coach, as they worked together during Norwich City's title success in the 2020/21 campaign, and that could give them an advantage in this transfer pursuit.

However, GIVEMESPORT reveals that the 23-year-old talent could also attract interest from the Premier League and may be hesitant to drop down to the Championship.

Spurs are also reluctant to allow him to move on from the club as Ange Postecoglou views him as a squad option who could be called upon next season, despite being behind the likes of Rodrigo Bentancur, Yves Bissouma, Pape Matarr Sarr, and potentially Gray now too.

It is now down to Farke and his team to work hard to convince Tottenham to part ways with the English maestro and then to persuade the player to drop down to the second tier to be a part of their attempt to return to the Premier League at the second time of asking.

If the ex-Canaries tactician can get a deal over the line for the right-footed metronome then he could come in as a fantastic partner for Ethan Ampadu.

Ethan Ampadu's debut season at Leeds in numbers

The Whites swooped to sign the defensive midfielder from Premier League side Chelsea on a permanent deal to anchor Farke's midfield last summer.

He started the campaign playing alongside the likes of Gray and Glen Kamara in the middle of the park but was eventually called upon at centre-back during the second half of the season due to Pascal Struijk's absence through injury.

Despite playing in different positions in either half of the term, the Welsh titan remained a consistent and impressive force in the spine of the team as they competed to secure promotion out of the Championship.

As you can see in the table above, the 23-year-old battler provided a fantastic defensive presence for Leeds throughout the campaign with his ability to make tackles, interceptions, and recoveries on a consistent basis.

He was also a monster in duels with opposition players, with a high success rate in physical contests both on the ground and in the air last term, which shows that the Welshman has the quality to dominate matches.

Struijk is due to be back from injury for pre-season and this suggests that he could return to the team alongside Rodon at the start of the campaign, which would then allow Ampadu to return to his favoured midfield role, potentially next to Skipp.

He could be a dream partner for the English midfielder as they are both defensive workhorses who can also provide progressive quality in possession.

Why Leeds should sign Oliver Skipp

Firstly, Ligue 1 side Rennes are reportedly interested in a deal to sign Kamara from the Whites and that would open up a starting spot next to Ampadu in midfield.

Secondly, Skipp is a young player, at the age of 23, with plenty of time left ahead of him to develop and grow, which means that he could be brought in as an immediate starter whilst still having the potential to improve and increase in value moving forward.

Tottenham midfielder Oliver Skipp.

The right-footed whiz has racked up 77 Premier League appearances for Spurs, and over 100 outings in all competitions for the club, and showcased his quality in and out of possession last term.

Skipp won 58% of his ground duels and completed an impressive 92% of his attempted passes across 21 appearances in the top-flight last term, which shows that he can dominate players on the deck and retain possession at a fantastic rate at the top level.

The former England youth international, who Farke once hailed as a "perfect" lad, is also a proven performer in the Championship who knows what it takes to earn promotion to the Premier League.

As you can see in the table above, Skipp provided a progressive presence in the midfield as Norwich won the second division title with Farke at the helm that term.

His ability to win possession through tackles and interceptions coupled with his quality on the ball makes him a well-rounded midfielder who could star alongside Ampadu, as they are both dominant talents who could boss games for Leeds next season.

Therefore, Skipp, who has already worked with the manager could hit the ground running, could be a fantastic signing for the club to make after their deal to bring Rodon back.

Stephen Eskinazi, Nathan Sowter power Middlesex to extend Sussex's woes

Opener continues good form with 59 before legspinner claims 3 for 13

Nathan Sowter produced his best Vitality Blast figures of the season as Middlesex’s bowlers staged an impressive fightback to see off Sussex Sharks by 63 runs. The legspinner finished with 3 for 13, while teenage seamer Blake Cullen returned a career-best three for 21 to successfully defend a score of 166 for 7 at Lord’s.That total was concentrated around Stephen Eskinazi’s 59 from 35 balls, making him the tournament’s leading scorer, but Middlesex still looked light on runs. However, the Sharks – whose quarter-final hopes had already been dented by five washouts in their previous six games – could only manage 103 for 9 in reply.Sussex inserted their hosts after winning the toss, but they looked understandably rusty in the field as Eskinazi and Max Holden, promoted to opener, built a solid platform during the Powerplay. The pair shared a partnership of 85 from 54 balls, with Eskinazi placing his shots shrewdly as he passed 50 for the fourth time in as many Blast innings. Holden swatted Tymal Mills’ first two deliveries for four and six, advancing to 38 before he holed out off Archie Lenham and when Eskinazi perished in similar fashion, scooping Will Beer to deep extra cover, Middlesex lost their way.A tight over by Ravi Bopara – in which he dismissed the dangerous Daryl Mitchell with a slower ball – turned the tide, while Mills came back strongly from his earlier mauling to finish with 2 for 31.The Sharks conceded just 32 from their last six overs, along with collecting five wickets as Middlesex laboured to what looked a below-par total. However, they swiftly removed both Sussex openers, with Luke Wright spooning Tom Helm to the diving Steven Finn, while Phil Salt drilled Mujeeb Ur Rahman straight to midwicket.Mujeeb’s initial spell of three overs for 13 created pressure and Sowter compounded it by bowling Aaron Thomason with his first delivery – while Cullen’s second accounted for David Wiese, hooking into the hands of Holden at deep square leg.Sussex’s best chance appeared to rest with Travis Head, who announced himself with a trio of boundaries off Helm, but the Australian was next to depart for 23, dragging a bottom edge from Cullen on to his stumps. With Holden taking another running catch to dismiss Bopara off Sowter, the Sharks’ cause looked hopeless at 59 for 6 and so it proved, despite a promising knock of 22 by debutant Harrison Ward.

Chelsea consider offering two players in swap deal to sign £50 million star

Centre-back Tosin Adarabioyo arrived on a free transfer from Fulham, with the likes of Brazilian starlet Estevao Willian and Omari Kellyman signing for Chelsea thereafter, as the Blues add some exciting talent to the books as well as senior first-teamers.

Kellyman swapped the Midlands for Stamford Bridge with left-back Ian Maatsen going the other way in a separate deal. Chelsea reached an agreement to sell Maatsen for just over £35 million, with the Dutch defender joining Thiago Silva out the Stamford Bridge exit door.

The 22-year-old impressed on loan at Borussia Dortmund last season, helping them reach the Champions League final, but his excellent displays weren't enough to convince Chelsea to not sell for a decent fee.

Alongside Maatsen, it is believed a fair few current members of Maresca's squad could be sacrificed over the coming weeks, as co-sporting directors Laurence Stewart and Paul Winstanley look to balance the books and trim Chelsea's bloated team.

Armando Broja, Malang Sarr, Kepa Arrizabalaga, Trevoh Chalobah, Lesley Ugochukwu, Marc Cucurella, Mykhailo Mudryk and Conor Gallagher are all players who could be sold by Chelsea this summer.

Ipswich Town have also opened talks to sign Omari Hutchinson this week, according to multiple reliable sources, while flop £325,000-a-week striker Romelu Lukaku is attracting serious interest from Serie A again.

Romelu Lukaku

The Belgian, who Chelsea signed in a £98 million deal from Inter Milan three years ago, has since spent time back at the Nerazzurri on loan. Lukaku also played under Jose Mourinho on another temporary spell at Roma, and it is now believed AC Milan want to strike yet another loan for the 31-year-old.

AC Milan set for new talks to sign Lukaku from Chelsea

La Gazzetta dello Sport claimed earlier this week that Lukaku gave his green light to join Milan, with Sky Italia sharing an update of their own on the matter. The broadcaster says Milan are set for new talks with Chelsea to sign Lukaku, and a meeting has been scheduled with his representatives to gauge the feasibility of a potential transfer.

The Rossoneri are pushing for a loan deal, but Chelsea are apparently demanding they pay a high portion of his wages. Lukaku has proved time and time again he can perform well in Italy, with Leonardo Bonucci branding him a "complete" striker.

Taskin Ahmed on Blessing Muzarabani face-off: I told him to focus on bowling rather than abusing me

The pair exchanged heated words during the second over of the day’s play

Taskin Ahmed scored his maiden Test fifty•Zimbabwe Cricket

Taskin Ahmed has said he decided against ceding any ground to Blessing Muzarabani during the duo’s heated mid-pitch face-off on day two in Harare, as a protest against what he saw as sledging from Zimbabwe’s players.Taskin, Muzarabani fined for face-pff

The heated confrontation that took place between Bangladesh’s Taskin Ahmed and Zimbabwe’s Blessing Muzarabani on the second day of the Harare Test has resulted in both players being fined 15% of their match fees.

Match referee Andy Pycroft also slapped them with one demerit point each as further punishment for getting in each other’s faces and making physical contact as well, which goes against article 2.1.12 of the ICC code of conduct.

Both Taskin and Muzarabani accepted their sanctions.

The incident took place in the second over of the day. Taskin, Bangladesh’s No. 10 batter, performed a jig after evading a short ball from Muzarabani. The Zimbabwe fast bowler seemed to exchange heated words with Taskin as he walked towards him in his follow-through. Before long, the verbal exchange took on an almost physical aspect as Muzarabani pushed his face into the grille of Taskin’s helmet. Some of Zimbabwe’s fielders had to intervene to separate the pair.”Their fast bowlers were attacking me with bouncers, and trying to get me out,” Taskin said after scoring his maiden international half-century and putting on 191 with Mahmudullah for the ninth wicket. “I think I was handling them well. Some of them were abusing me as well, but when they did it for the third time, I told him to do something with the ball rather than abusing me.”Related

Zimbabwe contained their frustration for the rest of the day, although Taskin and Mahmudullah kept them on the field for two-thirds of it.Taskin said his career-best 75 off 134 balls was the first step towards him becoming a competent lower-order contributor.”I have always wanted to be a good tail-ender,” he said. “I practise batting besides my bowling. I want to improve my batting so that it can come in handy in difficult situations. All big teams have responsible tail-enders who support the set batsman at the other end.”My main target was to support (Mahmudullah) Riyad . He spoke to me constantly, reminding me that I should defend the ball on the stumps. I only tried to hit those in my zone. I got a few boundaries, but I was more concerned about batting for the team.”Taskin said Mahmudullah had motivated him by telling him Bangladesh needed to put up a big total to take some pressure of their bowlers on a batting-friendly surface. “It is a good wicket except for the first session on the first day,” Taskin said. “Riyad kept telling me that we should score as much as possible as the wicket is getting better [to bat on].”It would give the bowlers something to bowl at. He told me to play with a straight bat, not try anything big. I am a bowler after all, I might want to try a big hit. But I tried to support him.”Taskin started well with the ball, too, conceding just two runs in his first eight overs. But in his last two overs, Brendan Taylor struck him for three fours, which he said was a reminder that nothing will come easy on this pitch for the bowlers.”We have to bowl consistently and patiently, according to the field, on this wicket,” he said. “It seems easy for the batsmen. We should attack but loose balls are quite easy to play here.”
