Emery could land Torres 2.0 with Aston Villa offer for 5 ft 11 "revelation"

Aston Villa won't be looking to make drastic alterations to their squad during the January transfer window, but another signing or two by Unai Emery could put them in a wonderful position to end their 28-year trophy drought.

The Spaniard has a wonderful squad at his disposal, yet injuries to key players could potentially see them unravel just when the going gets tough.

Unai Emery

Hopefully, it will not come to that, but a couple of signings would ease their reliance on certain players over the next few months.

With this in mind, it appears as though Villa have made an offer for a defender…

Aston Villa’s search for new signings

According to reports in Spain (via Birmingham World), the Midlands side have reportedly made an offer to sign Atlético Madrid defender Mario Hermoso this month, as Emery looks to add some reinforcements to his squad.

He appears to be of interest to Unai Emery…

BySean Markus Clifford Jan 16, 2024

The player is out of contract in the summer and thus will be available for a knockdown price this month, although no figure is mentioned in the report.

Mario Hermoso

Barcelona are another team who are keen on signing him, as Xavi looks to bolster his own defence and Villa could face some stiff competition in order to lure him to the Premier League.

Emery has enjoyed recent success in signing players from La Liga and signing Hermoso this month could allow the manager to repeat his Pau Torres masterclass from the summer.

How Mario Hermoso will fit into the Aston Villa side

The former Villarreal defender joined Villa for a fee in the region of £31.5m, and he has since shone for the club.

The Spaniard currently ranks third among the squad for accurate passes per game (54.4) in the league, along with ranking third for clearances per game (2.1) and for accurate long balls per game (2.8), showcasing his excellent passing ability during his first few months at Villa.

The 27-year-old also loves to bring the ball out from the defence often and, when compared to his positional peers, he ranks in the top 2% for both progressive carries (1.95) and successful take-ons (0.86) per 90, while ranking in the top 6% for progressive passes (5.86) per 90 and his impact has been an impressive one.

Hermoso, meanwhile, has played 153 times for Atletico since joining in 2019, and he even won the La Liga title with the club during the 2020/21 campaign.

Hailed as a "revelation" in the past by writer Zach Lowy, he would be a welcome addition indeed, especially as he can play left-back too.

Like Torres, Hermoso is always a forward-thinking defender as he likes to move the ball to the midfielders and forwards as often as possible.

Indeed, when compared to his positional peers, the Spaniard ranks in the top 8% for progressive passes per 90 (5.5) and for successful take-ons per 90 (0.6) and this suggests he could be another Torres for Emery.

The 5 foot 11 gem could be a very shrewd signing, especially due to his performances recently and the fact they could sign him for a lower fee due to his contract situation.

With Torres thriving at Villa, Hermoso could certainly follow in his footsteps.

Tottenham: Lilywhites scout Villarreal duo

Tottenham Hotspur officials watched long-time target Pau Torres and a new objective in Arnaut Danjuma for Villarreal against Liverpool in the UEFA Champions League semi-final this week, according to 90min.

The lowdown: Remarkable European adventure

Former Arsenal manager Unai Emery has overseen a memorable journey in Europe this season as the La Liga side eliminated Juventus and Bayern Munich on their way to a semi-final showdown with Liverpool.

It wasn’t to be for the Yellow Submarine though, as despite a second-leg comeback, the Premier League title-chasers, and Spurs’ next domestic opponents, prevailed 5-2 on aggregate to reach the final.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/tottenham-newest-updates/” title=”Tottenham newest updates…” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Now it appears that top officials from North London were present to run the rule over two of Villarreal’s most influential players…

The latest: Scouts sent to Spain

As per 90min, scouts from Tottenham were in situ for both legs of the semi-final to ‘keep tabs’ on Danjuma and Torres, despite the former missing the meeting at Estadio de la Ceramica due to injury.

Whilst boss Antonio Conte and transfer chief Fabio Paratici begin to draw up plans for the summer transfer window, it’s claimed that the pair are ‘on their radar’ for a double swoop.

The report claims that there were watchers from multiple clubs in Eastern Spain as on-loan Spurs man Giovani Lo Celso played 90 minutes, however, the ‘specific purpose’ of those sent from N17 was to watch the Dutch forward and Spanish defender in action.

The verdict: Take your pick

Having reportedly come close to landing 25-year-old centre-back Torres in 2021, it’s no surprise that the Lilywhites would reignite an interest this summer.

So far this season the 17-cap Spain ace has earned a superb 7.07 Sofascore rating from performances in the league containing 3.2 clearances per game on average whilst helping to keep 10 clean sheets from 29 outings.

Meanwhile, the interest in former Bournemouth winger Danjuma is a fresh link, but the man hailed as a ‘nightmare for defenders’ by ex-Premier League man Kevin Phillips has enjoyed a stellar time in Spain, scoring 16 times and providing four assists in 34 appearances across all competitions.

Adding either Villarreal ace to the ranks at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium would be an excellent piece of business – adding both could be future-defining.

'The financial thing is a hurdle' – ex-players stay away as CSA battles fund crunch

Faf du Plessis agrees that while the set-up needs inputs from past players, the board cannot always afford them

Firdose Moonda26-Oct-2019Cricket South Africa (CSA) needs deeper pockets if it wants former international players to be involved in their structure and programmes, according to captain Faf du Plessis. In the aftermath of what he called the “toughest part of my captaincy journey”, which has included a poor World Cup, a drubbing in India, and several high-profile retirements, du Plessis explained that while an inexperienced South African set-up need inputs from past greats, they cannot always afford them.”It’s obvious that we need to make more use of our ex-players and especially our experienced players, but it also comes with challenges,” he said. “I know for a fact that we have tried to get them involved, but I suppose it always comes down to a financial point of view. The financial thing is a hurdle at the moment but if that wasn’t a hurdle, most definitely.”ALSO READ: Du Plessis calls on CSA for certainty over director of cricket, team directorWhile he did not specifically name the players who had been approached, ESPNcricinfo understands that both Jacques Kallis and Shaun Pollock were spoken with, but had declined offers. There are also several other players scattered around the scene, who could have been of use. Former captain Graeme Smith was part of the commentary team in India, while recent retiree Hashim Amla was an analyst for the South African broadcaster . He was joined by Makhaya Ntini and former national coach Eric Simons. Dale Steyn, AB de Villiers, JP Duminy and Morne Morkel, who have all retired in the last 18 months, have not been involved at all.All these names form part of the group of experienced players that du Plessis has called on to help lift South African cricket out of its current situation. “We need experience in the team right now and that comes from ex-players. It’s great that there are three franchise coaches now that have played international cricket: Robin Peterson, Ashwell Prince, Mark Boucher. That’s a great thing,” du Plessis said, though he missed naming Imraan Khan, who coaches the Dolphins and played one Test in 2009. “We need to make sure that the experience and knowledge in our country – we use it to the best of our ability.”

It is a direction that CSA wants to take but it’s a matter of are those individuals available, because they also have other commitmentsEnoch Nkwe

Interim CSA director of cricket Corrie van Zyl echoed du Plessis’s thoughts, saying the “door is open” to former players, not just with the national team but at the levels below. “We would like to go to players like Hashim and say if it can’t happen at Proteas level, can you help with high performance [teams]?” Van Zyl said.Enoch Nkwe, the interim team director, agree, but like du Plessis, indicated that former players were not always available.”How do we get those ex-players, those great minds involved in the game? Not only at national level. We’ve seen it with England where Ian Bell is working with the under-19s. I know the likes of JP Duminy are interested in working with lower levels, where they feel they can make an impact and get young players prepared,” he said. “It is a direction that CSA wants to take but it’s a matter of are those individuals available, because they also have other commitments.”Ashwell Prince was in India overseeing a South African spin camp•Getty ImagesThose “other commitments”, if you read between du Plessis’ lines, are the opportunities to make money elsewhere. Smith, Pollock and Amla are believed to be paid more by broadcasters than CSA can afford. Similarly, du Plessis indicated money could be the reason players who retire don’t stay in the domestic set-up, where they can mentor the next generation.”Unfortunately, in South Africa right now, players that retire from international cricket are not going to stay and play domestic cricket. They will either play overseas or retire completely,” du Plessis said. “To have players like Hashim Amla and those guys, you can’t expect them to go back and play four-day cricket because they won’t. They won’t do that, they’ve been in the international game for so long, they are either going to move on to different pastures – not necessarily greener pastures – or they will completely stop.”I don’t think it’s a real expectation to have, to say those guys must go and play domestic cricket because I don’t think it’s a reality that will most likely ever be met.”

India was a really tough tour, mentally, and to just say to them ‘now you have to go and play’ won’t be the right way to go about it. If a guy doesn’t want to go and play, what’s the point of him playing.Faf du Plessis

None of Amla, Steyn, Duminy or Morkel play four-day cricket in South Africa, neither does Imran Tahir, who remains available for T20I selection. That leaves South Africa’s domestic system without a wealth of experience, a problem that remains even when the current crop of internationals are available. They rarely play franchise cricket because of the demands of their schedules and, in the immediate term, the need for time out after a tough tour.”I do believe in the national players going back and playing domestic cricket as well and the conversations do take place, but it’s also about the international player. The guys who play ten months of the year on the road, it’s also important for them to have a break and have some mental freshness,” du Plessis said.”Some guys will play in the four-day games now but some are not, because what’s required now is a bit of time away from the game. India was a really tough tour, mentally, and to just say to them ‘now you have to go and play’ won’t be the right way to go about it. If a guy doesn’t want to go and play, what’s the point of him playing? There will be no benefit.”Still, Rory Kleinveldt has called for du Plessis himself to lead from the front and play in the round of first-class fixtures which begin on Monday. That is unlikely, not least because Cape Town resident du Plessis continues to be associated with the Pretoria-based Titans’ team, which is laden with national players already.Dean Elgar, Theunis de Bruyn, Quinton de Kock and Heinrich Klaasen are the other batsmen with the Titans and it could be argued that at least two of them – de Bruyn and Klaasen – need more game time than du Plessis. And all four cannot be included anyway because of transformation requirements. The complicated requirements of South Africa’s selection also make it difficult for former players to find a spot, which was CSA’s argument behind expanding the top tier to 12 teams, which South Africa Cricketers’ Association is opposing in court. Du Plessis admitted he “does not know a lot about domestic structures, because I don’t spend a lot of time in domestic structures” but said if more teams meant more playing positions, he would be in favour of it.”The most obvious is that you are getting more players playing the game and that’s ideally a good scenario. The bigger the pool that we as the Proteas can pick from, the better.”Actually, the opposite will happen. Currently, South Africa’s domestic scene has space for 66 cricketers to play each week in the six franchises and 143 players in the 13-team provincial structure, which also has first-class status, though it is a second-tier competition. That’s a total of 209 players in action every weekend and does not take into account the few dozen on the sidelines.Collapsing the franchise and provincial structure into one tier, which is CSA’s intention, will reduce the total player number to 132, which means 77 fewer active cricketers. While du Plessis genuinely may not know the intricacies of this system, or may have disregarded the provincial system in his initial calculation because it is lower tier, the impact of the domestic restructure is clear: South Africa will have a thinner pipeline, something it can ill-afford from a playing point of view but needs to do financially.Lest we forget, CSA are still estimating debt over the next four-year cycle as being at R654 million (approx. US$ 44.8 million) and are looking to cut costs wherever they can. And that speaks to du Plessis’ first point that CSA’s pockets are not deep enough for their former players. But it also speaks to a less obvious issue, that perhaps the former players themselves are wary of becoming involved at CSA. This is a subject that is spoken about in hushed tones and in off-the-record conversations, but it is starting to show its head. Jacques Rudolph has blamed the administration for the current decline. While CSA tries to put out legal fires on several fronts, they are losing credibility among the very people who are their strongest currency: the players. And that is something they cannot afford at all.

Nic Maddinson double-century, Will Pucovski hundred help Victoria pile up 616

Victoria had South Australia two-down early in reply before Henry Hunt’s debut half-century avoided any further loss before stumps

Alex Malcolm at Junction Oval11-Oct-2019Victoria’s top three batsmen posted centuries as they piled up a huge first innings score to take complete command on day two against South Australia at the Junction Oval.Nic Maddinson reached his maiden first-class double-century and Will Pucovski posted his fourth Sheffield Shield century as Victoria made the highest score by any Shield team since 2015 before declaring in the middle session. It was also just the 12th time in Shield history that the top three batsmen made centuries in the same innings after Marcus Harris posted 116 on day one.South Australia debutant Henry Hunt and skipper Travis Head had to weather an unrelenting Victorian attack in the afternoon after Jake Weatherald and Jake Lehmann both fell cheaply. Hunt reached his maiden Shield half-century and remained unbeaten on 62 to avoid further damage before stumps.Maddinson, who began day two on 195, had to wait until the sixth over of the day to find the fifth run needed for his maiden first-class double-century. He cruised to 224 and Victoria reached 1 for 413 before Maddinson finally fell edging an attempted cut off Kane Richardson.Peter Handscomb came in and made a brisk 30 before skying one straight up trying to hit Tom Andrews against the spin over long-on.Pucovski went about his business calmly and despite getting bogged in the nineties, and nearly running out Aaron Finch for a duck, he eventually sneaked to his fourth century in just 20 Shield innings.”It was a good test early,” Pucovski said after the day’s play. “Obviously, I was quite slow at the start so to sort of mentally get through that and not get frustrated and stick to my process and obviously come out with a positive outcome, in the end, was a big positive.”Starting [on that pitch] is quite tough. It’s quite slow and it’s hard to score freely if you bowl in the right spots and get it reversing a bit. It’s just a patience thing.”Finch then cut loose after lunch as Victoria pressed for a declaration. He smashed six fours and four sixes to reach 57 in just 44 balls before falling caught and bowled to Andrews. But he suffered back spasms during his innings and was unable to field for the remainder of the day as a precaution.Pucovski ran himself out for 123 taking on Weatherald at mid-off. But Glenn Maxwell picked up from where Finch left off clubbing four fours and two sixes in a 30-ball 43 to allow Victoria to declare 30 minutes before tea on 6 for 616. It was the first time any Shield side had passed 600 since February 2017 and the highest score since Western Australia made 633 against South Australia in 2015.The Redbacks’ response started disastrously. After spending 150 overs in the field, Weatherald nicked the first ball of the innings from James Pattinson to Maxwell in the gully. The visitors should have been 2 for 0, but Handscomb dropped Jake Lehmann at second slip off Pattinson in the third over. The Victorian quick bowled two hostile spells down breeze either side of tea.Lehmann battled to 8 off 40 balls before he was caught behind off the inside edge attempting to drive Chris Tremain. Hunt batted beautifully and looked unflustered against the high-quality attack. His defence was sound and his hands soft as he batted comfortably through the last two-and-a-half hours of the day.Head was fortunate that a leading-edge ballooned safely over Scott Boland’s head before he had scored. He had to curb his free-flowing instincts as Victoria stacked his preferred scoring region square on the off-side. But he reached stumps unbeaten on 27 from 80 balls.

PSG stopped paying Mbappe in FebruaryStriker owed huge sum by Ligue 1 clubFrance star demands payment is madeWHAT HAPPENED?

Mbappe confirmed in May he would be leaving PSG after seven years and has since completed a move to Real Madrid on a free transfer. However, the forward has since been back in touch with PSG to demand payment of unpaid wages and bonuses dating all the way back to February and which totals around €100 million (£84m/$107m), according to .

AdvertisementGetty/GOALTHE BIGGER PICTURE

PSG are believed to have stopped all payments to Mbappe in February after he informed club president Nasser Al-Khelaifi of his plans to leave, according to Info Blast. The Ligue 1 champions believed they reached a gentleman's agreement with Mbappe last summer to give up some salary payments. The club also want him to repay an €80m (£67m/$85m) loyalty bonus he received in October. PSG believed Madrid would pay the loyalty bonus but Los Blancos were unaware of the situation and have no intention of paying up.

WHAT HAS BEEN SAID

PSG have told Info Blast: "The player pledged to protect the club upon his departure, firstly giving assurances that he would not leave on a ‘free transfer’ and then if his departure was ultimately a free transfer, agreeing not to leave “for free” (in other words, giving up certain financial rights), which is what some recent holdbacks relate to."

Mbappe is currently playing for France at Euro 2024 and will then turn his attentions back to club football and a new season with Real Madrid. PSG, meanwhile, continue to hunt for a replacement and have been linked with a host of attackers including Napoli's Victor Osimhen and Napoli star Khvicha Kvaratskhelia.

Leeds: Orta plotting Ebiowei swoop

Leeds United are interested in a deal to bring Malcolm Ebiowei to Elland Road in the summer transfer window.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a recent report by The Sun, who claim that Leeds have now joined the race to land the Derby County winger this summer, with the 18-year-old set to become available on a free transfer upon the expiry of his contract at Pride Park at the end of the current campaign.

[snack-amp-story url=”https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-leeds-united-news-transfer-rumours-gossip-and-much-more” title=”Read the latest Leeds United news and rumours!”]

The report goes on to state that the likes of Tottenham Hostpur, Crystal Palace and RB Leipzig are also keeping a very close eye on the situation of the England youth international ahead of a potential swoop this summer.

The next Gelhardt

While it would appear unlikely that, should Victor Orta go on to seal a deal for Ebiowei in the coming months, the youngster would be thrown straight into the Leeds first-team next season, considering the sheer amount of potential the forward possesses, it would never the less appear wise for the Whites sporting director to do everything he can to land the 18-year-old this summer.

Indeed, over his 15 Championship appearances this term, the £140-per-week winger has highly impressed for Wayne Rooney’s side, scoring one goal, registering two assists and creating four big chances for his teammates, as well as taking an average of 1.3 shots, making 1.1 key passes and completing a whopping 3.2 dribbles – the most of any player in the league – per game.

These returns have seen the former Arsenal and Rangers starlet average a very respectable SofaScore match rating of 6.79, ranking him as the Rams’ tenth-best player in the second tier.

As a result of these eye-catching performances, Ebiowei has come in for a considerable amount of praise, with Derby’s first-team development coach, Justin Walker, stating of the teenager earlier this season:

“I think he has been a breath of fresh air. You can see how much the fans have warmed to him, he gets people out of their seats. He has got that little bit of X-factor, if you like, that creativity we have lacked at times in the final third.

“The only thing probably missing from his game is a goal, but I am sure that will come. He has got so much talent, and more importantly his attitude and his character.”

Furthermore, following the 18-year-old’s man of the match performance in a 1-1 draw with Coventry City back in March, Rooney also raved about the potential of the youngster, stating:

“He has got an enormous amount of ability. He’s brave; he’s not afraid to take players on, get tackled, and make mistakes. I thought he was excellent all game. He was the best player on the pitch.

“It is one of the best performances I have seen from a young player consistently for 90 minutes in a long time, and he deserves that because he’s worked so hard. His attitude is incredible, and he’s an exciting young player. I know it means a lot to him.”

As such, with Orta boasting an impressive record of cherry-picking some of the most exciting young talents in the English game – such as the signings of Joe Gelhardt and Sam Greenwood – it would very much appear the signing of Ebiowei would fall into the same bracket as the arrivals from Wigan Athletic and Arsenal, as it is evident that the Derby starlet has an incredible future.

Forward starred for Canaries in 2023-24Missed four months through fitness issuesNow chasing down Copa America gloryGettyWHAT HAPPENED?

The 24-year-old frontman has just enjoyed the most productive campaign of his career in front of goal – with 16 efforts recorded for Norwich in their bid to secure promotion back into the Premier League. That haul was achieved despite sitting out four months through injury.

AdvertisementWHAT SARGENT SAID

Sargent is now in the United States’ squad for a Copa America on home soil and has told the podcast of how he is managing fitness issues that have been troubling him since late 2022: “It is feeling good at the moment. It is kind of a day-by-day thing. I have been training with the guys the past couple of days and everything is going well. Hopefully it stays that way. For a while now, pretty much ever since the World Cup it is that balance to push the ankle or rest it. That has been a lot of talking with my club and national team. I am doing everything I can. After a big operation there are bound to be little things that aggravate the ankle. I didn’t know how it would be coming to the friendlies. It didn’t feel great but I put in a lot of work with the physios. Gregg [Berhalter] has put his faith in me to pull this around and get some minutes in this tournament and do well.”

GettyTHE BIGGER PICTURE

The USMNT are confident of holding their own in Copa America competition, with Sargent adding on collective ambition following a 5-1 friendly defeat to Colombia and 1-1 draw with Brazil: “I don’t know what went on in the Colombia game but it was day and night with Brazil in terms of our approach and mentality. That is the real US and we know in a tournament like this we all have to be dialled in and at our absolute best.

"This is a big moment and we need to show that grit and firepower and stick together as a team if we want to have a chance to win this thing. We want people to know that we have a lot of good young players coming up with the passion to play for that crest, and hopefully we represent that. As a group we have talked about it and when you go into a tournament the goal is to win it. But we know there are some of the best teams in the world. We might not have as many skilful players but as a team we can be better.”

WHAT NEXT FOR THE USMNT?

The United States will get their Copa America campaign up and running at AT&T Stadium against Bolivia on Sunday. A positive result in that contest will set them up for further Group C outings against Panama and Uruguay.

Same agent as Weimann: Derby interested in signing 32 y/o Coventry City ace

Derby County are now interested in signing an experienced defender to add to their already busy summer window, according to a recent report.

Derby announce the signing of Owen Beck from Liverpool

On Friday afternoon, the Rams announced that Owen Beck had joined the club on a season-long loan deal from Liverpool. The left-back becomes Derby’s first loan signing of the summer and their sixth arrival altogether. This is the 22-year-old’s sixth loan spell away from Anfield, after spells at Famalicao, Bolton Wanderers, Dundee on two separate occasions, Blackburn Rovers and now Derby.

Derby County fighting to sign 17-goal striker available for £2.2 million

The Rams are looking to recruit a new frontman…

BySean Markus Clifford Jul 25, 2025

During his time at Ewood Park, Beck worked with John Eustace, and the defender has admitted it was a “no-brainer” to reunite with the Derby boss once again. Beck also went on to add to Derby’s media team that Eustace “got the best out of him” during his time at Blackburn.

Obviously, I know the gaffer well from last year. I spoke to him with that experience of working with him before in mind. It moved pretty fast and was a no-brainer for me.

“We built a really good connection. I feel like he got the best out of me. When he called up and we had that conversation again where he was looking to bring me in, it was a no-brainer, really!

“I enjoyed playing under him. As I said, I feel like he got the best out of me. I feel like he can get even more out of me this season, and I can push that step further.”

Derby County interested in 32 y/o defender

As the Rams wrap up a deal for Beck, they have now turned their attention to another defensive signing. According to the MailSport, relayed by Football League World, Derby are keen on signing Jake Bidwell from Coventry City.

Bidwell only signed a new contract with the Sky Blues in January of this year, extending his stay until 2027, but the Championship side are open to offers for either Bidwell or Jay Dasilva this summer, after bringing Miguel Angel Brau to the club as their new left-back.

32-year-old Bidwell has been with Coventry since January 2022, when he joined on a free transfer from the Swans. The left-back, who can also play centre-back and left midfield if needed, has been a consistent performer for the Sky Blues. Last season, he started 23 of the 29 Championship games he played, as he featured heavily under Frank Lampard, but it appears as though now he’s fallen down the pecking order.

His potential arrival at Pride Park would be an interesting one, as the Rams have just brought Beck in, and they already have Callum Elder and Craig Forsyth at their disposal.
