Aston Villa won't be looking to make drastic alterations to their squad during the January transfer window, but another signing or two by Unai Emery could put them in a wonderful position to end their 28-year trophy drought.

The Spaniard has a wonderful squad at his disposal, yet injuries to key players could potentially see them unravel just when the going gets tough.

Hopefully, it will not come to that, but a couple of signings would ease their reliance on certain players over the next few months.

How Mario Hermoso will fit into the Aston Villa side

The former Villarreal defender joined Villa for a fee in the region of £31.5m, and he has since shone for the club.

The Spaniard currently ranks third among the squad for accurate passes per game (54.4) in the league, along with ranking third for clearances per game (2.1) and for accurate long balls per game (2.8), showcasing his excellent passing ability during his first few months at Villa.

The 27-year-old also loves to bring the ball out from the defence often and, when compared to his positional peers, he ranks in the top 2% for both progressive carries (1.95) and successful take-ons (0.86) per 90, while ranking in the top 6% for progressive passes (5.86) per 90 and his impact has been an impressive one.

Hermoso, meanwhile, has played 153 times for Atletico since joining in 2019, and he even won the La Liga title with the club during the 2020/21 campaign.

Hailed as a "revelation" in the past by writer Zach Lowy, he would be a welcome addition indeed, especially as he can play left-back too.

Like Torres, Hermoso is always a forward-thinking defender as he likes to move the ball to the midfielders and forwards as often as possible.

Indeed, when compared to his positional peers, the Spaniard ranks in the top 8% for progressive passes per 90 (5.5) and for successful take-ons per 90 (0.6) and this suggests he could be another Torres for Emery.

The 5 foot 11 gem could be a very shrewd signing, especially due to his performances recently and the fact they could sign him for a lower fee due to his contract situation.

With Torres thriving at Villa, Hermoso could certainly follow in his footsteps.

Despite reports in September that Maresca was under pressure to play Ben Chilwell more often, thereby increasing his chances of finding a suitor in the next transfer window, the Englishman has been reduced to just 45 minutes in all competitions this season.

Chelsea have held exit talks with numerous clubs regarding Chilwell already, according to reliable media sources, and the Englishman is apparently a man in demand across the Premier League, Serie A and La Liga heading into next month.

Midfielder Carney Chukwuemeka is also looking to leave Chelsea ahead of January, with the 20-year-old failing to make a single Premier League appearance this season and playing just 63 minutes in total.

Cesare Casadei finds himself in a similar situation, and reports in Italy are linking the midfielder with high-profile moves to the likes of AC Milan and Juventus in his homeland.

This is despite some praise from Maresca earlier this season, who previously expressed happiness over his countryman’s role.

“I am very happy with the way he is playing. I had Cesare last year, and he was playing a little bit in different position,” said Maresca on Casadei in October.

“This year, we are using him like a holding midfielder. The reason why is because I think we go in the direction where the middle you need physical players. Cesare is very big, physically strong and helps us when we want to press. On the ball, he is improving a lot. Tonight he played one touch, so we are very happy. For him, it’s the same as the rest; many things he can do better but he is in the right direction.”

Glasgow Rangers have endured a horrendous start to the 2025/26 campaign, failing to win any of their first five matches in the Scottish Premiership.

The Light Blues were also knocked out of the Champions League by a 9-1 defeat to Club Brugge on aggregate, which has left Russell Martin under plenty of pressure early on in his Ibrox career.

There have been some positives to take away from the first couple of months of the campaign, though, including the signing of winger Djeidi Gassama from Sheffield Wednesday.

The French forward arrived from the EFL Championship side for a fee of £2.2m, and he has proven to be an instant success on the flank at Ibrox.

Gassama has produced four goals and one assist in 12 appearances in all competitions for the Scottish giants to date, including four goals in six Champions League qualifiers.

The 22-year-old star is yet to get off the mark in the Premiership, though, which means that the Gers are still looking for their next Ryan Kent at Ibrox.

As you can see in the table above, Kent was one of the most productive wingers in the Premiership at scoring goals, creating goals, dribbling past opposition players, and getting touches in the opposition’s box.

These statistics show that Gerrard was able to rely on the ex-Liverpool attacker to deliver consistent quality in the final third, without being a one-dimensional threat, because he could go down the outside to provide assists or cut inside to score goals.

Kent then went on to finish his career at Rangers with a return of 33 goals and 56 assists in 218 appearances in all competitions, per Transfermarkt, which shows that he also had longevity at Ibrox.

The Light Blues have won one trophy, the League Cup under Philippe Clement in 2023, in the two full seasons since the club released him in the summer of 2023, illustrating how much they have missed his wizardry on the left flank.

Now, though, Martin may have his own version of Kent already at the club and waiting for his chance to really break through, and it is not Gassama.

Whilst the French star has shown flashes in the Champions League, his failure to provide any goals in five appearances in the Premiership so far is a bit of a concern.

Martin must provide the 18-year-old left-sided attacker with more opportunities to shine at Ibrox in the coming weeks and months because the youngster has shown enough in his limited minutes to suggest that he has serious potential.

Curtis showed great promise during his brief time with the B team. He delivered four goals and three assists in eight appearances at that level before making the step up to the first-team, per Transfermarkt.

Those numbers for the B team were Kent-esque, as he provided quality as both a scorer and a creator of goals from the left flank, and he has shown flashes of translating that output over to the senior side.

“The Boy Wonder”, as described by Premier Sports, scored his first goal for the first-team in a Champions League qualifying clash with Panathinaikos, and the run and strike was one that Kent would have been proud of.

Unfortunately, though, the 18-year-old star has not been given a consistent run of matches to showcase his quality on the pitch on the left flank for the Gers since that fantastic goal in the first match of the season.
